Misguided BT Loyalist trying to leave

I have reached the end of the line with BT simply because no package exists any more for people like me.
I make very few social calls of more than a few minutes duration and have absolutely no need for free weekend or evening calls whatsoever, I normally have better things to do with my time.
My fundamental need for a house landline is for security and occasional domestic management purposes, i.e. dealing with insurance firms, utilities etc. during businesss hours. The tariffs designed to appeal to low users penalise me heavil by charging not only a rate per minute which is barely competitive with mobile tariffs and has the sting in the tail of charging a set up fee for each and every call outside evenings and weekends. !6 calls in the last quuarter effectively costing me around £80.
Over the years anything good which BT ever had for me has gone. Friends and family, Friends and Family Mobile, Best Friend.   Calls to Channel Islands (part of the National STD system, for goodness sake) treated as though we are all millionaires at this end too!
The last straw now is the introduction of a charge for caller display.  Just how mean can BT get?
Well, I suppose no more mean than charging 6 quid a quarter for payment processsing. I pay by automated service with a debit card. I'm not asking anyone to unwrap an envelope containing a cheque and then key in the details!
Well, here's news, BT. I'm off to Post Office Home Phone as soon as possible. They don't discriminate against how you settle up and if I give them £120 up front the line rental is only £10 a month. On the other hand I might just do everything on a monthly top up deal with the mobile phone and also get to grips with Skype. I haven't discounted the Co-op either, a somewhat worthier cause than privatised BT and even the once revered Post Office.
At the moment, BT calmly trousers over £320 per year off me for providing me with progressively less and less for more and more cost.
I am a pensioner on a laughable monthly income and it is a pretty poor show that our once fine telephone service which used to have a social conscience has taken away low user tarriffs and incoming calls only tariffs.
Foolishly believing the hype that BT don't want people to leave I have wasted hours talikng to customer service and twice was hoodwinked into taking out annual agreements overriding my rolling 30 day notice. On cancelling both within the statutory 7 days I was then told that I couldn't go back on my pre-existing terms because they no longer exist. Well, they did exist and I was on them and I'm back on them but it took a grievance procedure to reinstate but then again that was no hardship for BT as I'm back where I was, getting screwed for every call and, really annoyingly, having to pay for caller display. Caller display doesn't cost a bean on mobile phones.
As of today I have settledd what I consider a reasonable sum towards the bill (they can stuff the grossly discriminatory processing  charge) consisting of last months outstanding line rental, the next two months line rental (in return for which I expect a service, not a dead line) and £4.97 the cost of the grand total of 12 calls to UK landlines (total duration 21min 27 sec) 4 calls to mobile numbers (total 0 min 53 sec. all these in the course of 3months.  Now, wait for it: I made one free call (51 sec) during that quarter!
Well nough is enough. No more £320 a year from me for you to blow on sports sponsorship, BT
How do I exit most economically before transferring to Post Office Home Phone, bearing in mind that I've just given you a couple of months rental up front for which I can reasonably expect a connection and my line is dead?

Thanks for your reply. I'm interested to know where the free caller display which you mention comes from, is it a bonus for joining 'Rental Saver'?
Unfortunately, BT lost three chances to make a realistic deal  with them and I will definitely now terminate my relationship with them in the near future. Because one always has to pay the line rental up front, which I have just done, I now need to work out when is the ideal time to give notice so as not to negate any benefit of going elsewhere. If I 'wait until my Bt Contract has finnished' I will once again find myself on the wrong side of the next bill.
I might just decide to jack in landline culture completely  and go cellular only. The latter would undoubtedly be the most cost effective but would put me without the security of a fixed line at my house. I don't need an internet connection at the premises concerned, or anywhere away from free Wi Fi for that matter. I will never want to download or watch movies or indulge in on line gaming and other data intensive usage, nor am I interested enough in social phone use to bother with Skype.
Landline rental certainly is an absolute rip off. The cabling and switching technology has become cheaper and more reliable over the years yet the cost to the householder just goes up and up.   How do the cellular providers manage to vritually give away telephones at a fraction of their true value?   A replacemet Lithium Ion battery costs more than the purchase price of the phone.
Are most of the people who reply on here BT stooges?  Good on you  if you are merely enthusiastic supporters, even if prolific posters.  Anyone in the future who gets a reply from me need not fear that to be so in my case (stooge or supporter- note my self description as a misguided loyalist). Part of my misguided loyalty is my unshakeable belief that the telecoms infrastucture should have remained a national asset.
I might even stick around on here after I end my over 50 year relationship with the outfit.

    Broadband was great until 07/05/13 when a fault developed on my phone line (still with BT) and my speed has halved. I discovered the fault when I received a text from BT saying they were sorry I was leaving but could  I phone them to discuss possible termination charges........ well my contract ended 26/04/13 so I know there should be no charges..... coincidence ? I called them to report the fault and they confirmed I was out of contract and so no charges.
    Today I received 2 emails from BT....... the first stating that my broadband service would end today ....... hmm been with PN for 11 days now.
    My phone was part of a broadband package with BT and so the second email concerned an order for a new phone package they have put in for me which I certainly did not order. The small print allows me 7 days to cancel in which I'll only be charged for what I use but any longer and they will charge me a cancellation fee. Considering the phone is to be switched over on 20/05/13 this is a new contract for 9 days and had I not been home to notice this email I would more likely have been charged a cancellation fee.
     I have sent off an email to BT about this but I'm very annoyed and can't understand why the phone could not be switched over at the same time as the broadband. It seems I will end up paying double line rental, one to PN for my broadband and the second to BT for my phone and may suffer charges for a service I haven't asked for.
    I'll be glad when PN takes over my services completely

    I have been with BT for a little over a month now and the customer service is nothing short of appalling.
    First there was a 'data integrity' issue with my account. That meant I could order anything. I was trying to order a broadband upgrade and also BT television.
    I spent, without any exaggeration a total of more than seven hours on the 'phone to BT over a period of eight days being passed from pillar to post speaking to staff with minimal command of English. Having to explain the same thing over and over again.  I also tried web chat - complete waste of time. Very polite but pointless.
    I also filled out the BT complaint form - null response from that. Again pointless.
    The latest farce was last weekend. I waited at home on a Saturday afternoon for an engineer who was due to attend between 1 and 6 pm. During that time my broadband was up and down like a fiddlers elbow until at 5:45 I got a call from someone who got my name wrong and then told me that it is not possible for him to do the work. Unsurprisingly he could not tell me when it might be done or give me any clue as to what I should do. He did suggest in a fairly vague way that I would probably get a call on Monday.
    Now Wednesday and guess who hasnt called
    Any comment?

  • Frequent problems when trying to leave a review in the App Store

    Why does the App Store repeatedly ask for my password, not letting me leave a review for an app?  It's very frustrating.  The app asks me to leave a review, but I can't write one because I'm in an annoying circular pattern of being asked for my password, I enter it and it repeats.  There's never a problem with my password when I'm purchasing something!

    It seems to me that your nickname from the iTunes Store on a computer does not necessarily carry over to the App Store on the iPad.
    So I suggest simply re-entering your nickname.  Surely there is no harm in doing that.

  • I downloaded the Beta 4 version tried to leave feedback and it says I need to download the beta version, what is going on? I want to leave feed back on NOT being able to download pics in hotmail with the new beta version????

    I want to download a picture from my hotmail email, but it keeps reverting back to the email pic. Wont download it. I had to go to my Yahoo account to do this! When I went to the feedback for the New beta version FireFox 4 I was told I had to install the beta version - WHICH I already have! HELP

  • After closing Firefox and trying to open a new session, I get periodic pop ups telling the program is still running. I open the task manager and close it, and everything's fine. What's the issue, and how do I get it to stop?

    Problem doesn't happen every time, and I've tried to leave it alone to see if there's an update that needs to finish loading. After being left overnight, I still had to use the task manager to close the Firefox program. I have no idea what it's doing, and I'd like to know. Is Firefox taking over my computer so it can move on to my house, and then go on to rule the Tri State Area?

  • For about 2 weeks I have been unable to leave feedback on ebay. Firefox brings up login page but will not accept password. I am having the same problem with my yahoo email. It will not accept my passwords, so I have to use IE to login to these accounts.

    On yahoo email, it accepted my login id, but not password. This started on one account about two weeks ago. Today when I tried to login to another yahoo email, which worked yesterday, but it would not accept my password on this account.
    I bought some items on ebay and wanted to leave feedback. When I clicked on the leave feedback button a sign in window appeared, this should not have happened, when I tried to sign in, it would not accept my password. I called ebay and was told they have had many complaints from customers using firefox when trying to leave feedback. The help desk suggested I try with Internet Explorer, I did, and it worked perfectly.
    I have been using firefox for a long time and really do not want to go back to IE, but when I cannot sign into my accounts, I can't, so I will have to use IE.
    As far as I know, no new programs have been installed on this computer.

  • Error Message When Trying to Burn Pics to a CD

    I'm trying to burn pictures to a DVD. I have the ones I want highlighted, I then click "Burn", and it gives me the following error message:
    "Incomplete Disc Name
    Please enter a name for the disc"
    A name automatically populates in the "Name" field ... I've left the name as it is, I've tried to change it, I've taken numbers out, I've taken any special characters out, and I've even tried to leave it blank. Still get the error message.
    Any ideas how I can fix this? Thanks for your help!

    Try the basic fix: close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and see if that helps.

  • Problems when trying to migrate from 6.0 to 6i

    Hi,
    I'm having problems when trying to migrate a Designer 6.0 application to 6i.
    When I get to start the migration after having selected the source application, the process fails immediately after I've pressed the button.
    I'm getting the error: CDR-21244: This process has been aborted and the advice to check the log file. But no log file is created.
    I've read Note 234984.1 which gives two suggestions in this situation: That the ORACLE_HOME environment variable is unset, and that the LOG_DIRECTORY_RAU directory is writeable. Both is fulfilled in my situation. However it seems that the migration procedure tries to start imp - I've noticed a short flash with the command prompt screen - and when I try to start imp manually from the command prompt I get errors. I was able to fix this error by setting ORACLE_HOME and ORA_NLS33. But the defining ORACLE_HOME is "illegal" ref. Note 234984.1. Of course I tried to leave it anyway, but that didn't help neither: The migration still dies a quick and silent dead.
    So now I'm stucked. How can I carry on?
    The source is on version 6.0.3.5.0 running on 8.1.5, and the taget is version 6.5.92.1.9 running on 8.1.7.4.

  • Installation problem v6 / error 1316 / tried many resolutions so far but no installations !!!

    Dear all,
    this is my 3rd day that I spent in front of my computer and my mind start cracking.
    Firstly here is my computer config:
    win7 ultimate 
    service pack 1
    always "run as administrator".
    I had bold 9000 (OS5 - BIS) and and was using/syncing with desktop manger v5.0.1 without any problem over 2 year.
    3 days ago bought a new bold 9788(OS6 - BIS) and my nightmares started.
    Firstly, existed DM start to crashing when I connect my phone.  So I downloaded from blackberry web site v6.1 version.
    I read necessary forums before installing and made clean uninstall for previous DM as per stated Article ID: KB02206
    plus as a medium tech savvy I run registry cleaner program to clean leftovers as I did for my all unistalls. so far no any problem about uninstall process.
    when i run the installer installation starts but afterwhile it comes error 1316(a network error occured  while attempting to read from the file C:\windows\installer\blackberry desktop software.msi) and installation stops and rolling back process. 
    after that i read all the forums related 1316 error but as now no any solutions. I can't install this software to my computer.
    here is the list of the procedures i followed so far, but i would like to remind after each installation attempt, I uninstalled together with complete uncleaning process including with registires and all "research in motions" folders that created during installations and countless reboots.
    here is the folders I deleted each time:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\research in motions
    C:\ProgramData\research in motions
    C:\Program Files\research in motions
    in some forum manetioned another folder might be created under C:\users\****\appdata\roaming\ - but I dont found any RIM file or folder in this section.
    here is the resolutions that i followed so far.
    1.) all 4 resolutions explained in Article ID: KB04272
    2.) used windows installer clean up app. for uninstall.
    3.) i placed "desktop software.msi file inside of the C:\windows\installer folder.
    4.) i run setup.exe file from extracted zip file.
    5.) deleted registries from registry editor by searching ne by one.
    6.) registered alt.dll for re-installs.
    as I can see from the forum pages error 1316 is problem for who want to uninstall software. i just want to install latest desktop software and use my new phone and sync my contacts.
    can you please check and let me know if you have any experience how to overcome about this problem ?

    Yes, it is past the /lib symlink upgrade. I got 99% of the way there with the various bin directories and /lib was the very last obstacle, and I just could not figure out a way around that.
    However, one of my tries did leave me with the /lib symlink. I don't recall how I get there and didn't appreciate its importance, so I've been unable to duplicate it; since I saw it once, I have hope that there is a solution.
    Migrating this server and all its various user data, git repositories, SQL databases, and such would take me a couple days. I got 99% of the way there and hope that there's a way I can get this done in a couple hours, given the right sequence of steps.

  • Should we be leaving some free space on iPod hard drives?

    I'm curious about this. Just recently bought a used 40 GB iPod (4th Gen.) and have loaded it nearly full. I just wondered if I should feel free to fill it up until there's essentially no space left, or if I'm better off to leave some open space on its hard drive. I've heard that, in general, the stability of a hard drive decreases if you push it to its capacity, so I'm trying to leave about half of a gig free. Just wondering if anybody has a more informed viewpoint. Thanks!

    Personally speaking, I've never found it makes the
    slightest bit of difference whether my iPods are full
    to capacity or not (and I've owned 7).
    Do you mean this in a good or bad way? Do you mean that you've had hard drive problems whether they're full or not? Or do you mean that they've all been reliable either way?

    Hello I have a MacBook Pro laptop that doesn't boot and stops at the Apple logo in grey.
    I ready about Target Mode and wen't bought a Firewire cable, connected to another MacBook Pro but the hard drive doesn't show up on the Go/Computer or the Disk Utility either.
    Also I noticed that when the MacBook Pro is in Target mode it shows the Firewire logo jumping around the screen but to the left of it also is something that looks like electrical/power symbol, don't know if that matters. I tried to plug in the target computer to power and nothing changes, then tried to leave it unpluged from power and plug in the power to host but nothing happens. Both are almost full power on battery.
    Basically I need a way to get the files off. Thanks.
