Missing Applications Menu in Awesome (- gnome)

I installed awesome. Love it. It's super fun and makes life as convenient as a window manager ever possibly could, without caving in to the ways of the smart-phone computer.
I cheated a bit and had it set up as the window manager for gnome. Not complaining, it makes a few things easier to work with, and it's a bit more stylish. Just thought I'd shoot out one small question...
When awesome is started like this:
exec ck-launch-session awesome
I found I was able to get a very nice applications menu by typing fn+F5
When started alongside gnome in GDM, however, this functionality is gone. I'm guessing that conflicts with something gnome usually does when fn+F5 is pressed (change monitors? idk not important...)
The point is, I really liked that awesome menu!
Granted, it's not the best keybinding in the world. I'd love to change it! But I can't find it anywhere in rc.lua! The config file for awesome contains no instance of "F5" or "Super_L,"or any other form of reference to either of those keys. But it works when I ditch gnome and startx instead!
(Checking my work with xev:
KeyPress event, serial 31, synthetic NO, window 0x2400001,
root 0x14d, subw 0x0, time 1387524, (762,-16), root:(763,0),
state 0x0, keycode 133 (keysym 0xffeb, Super_L), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

Anyways, I'm a bit confused by this situation. If anyone knows a tip for where to find that application menu again with an awesome gnome session, this is the most welcome place in the world to share it!
~~~~~=:)
EDIT: "Mod4+p" also does the trick in awesome; also doesn't work with the desktop environment.
I found
-- Menubar
awful.key({ modkey }, "p", function() menubar.show() end)
in rc.lua after all!
Still confused as to why menubar is cancelled out by gnome...
Tom, thanks for the input so far. Explain exactly what you mean by "Depends on how I'm doing it".
Forgive me for pressing the issue but I want to know exactly what is going wrong during the install process to cause this issue. What preparation needs to be done before running the installer besides the usual permissions repair before and after the install is complete. How would you install from the CD?
  • GNOME: Application Menu loses entries
    Hi there,
    When editing an entry in the Applications menu (say, changing the icon), the entry disappears. Custom application launchers aren't listed in the Applications menu, either, not even after restarting the panel or quitting / logging in GNOME 2.8.
    All launchers, both edited and custom ones, are available in applications:/// mind.
    Where exactly does the Applications menu get its entries?
    This is how I can make entries to the Applications menu again: the .desktop file has to contain the lines below. When I add a menuentry with the "Add new item to this menu" I get a .desktop file in ~/.gnome2/vfolders/applications. This .desktop file is missing the "Categories:" line and contains a line "TryExec:" I have to delete the "TryExec" line and insert a "Categories:" line (see sample below) then I copy this .desktop file to the /usr/share/applications directory and the menu entry will appear. No need to set any permissions! Hope this is a workaround for you other guys too!
  • [Solved] Gnome 3.6. - no application menu after update
    After the Gnome-Shell-Update there are no applications anymore in the Gnome desktop. I have to start programmes with 'Alt + F2' and it's not possible to pin them in the Dash. They don't appear in the Gnome's desktop search either.
    If I'm starting alacarte the error message "can not load menu tree 'applications.menus'" appeared. Has somebody an idea how to fix this problem? Thanks in advantage!
    I found the solution:
    The applications.menu in ~/.config/menus/ was empty. I copied the application.menu from /etc/xdg/menus/ to the .config-file. Now, everything works fine.
    Thanks for the nice tip. However, I don't think this is expected behaviour, is it? Should we file a bug against Gnome-Shell for this?
    I can't think that this would be expected behaviour. The global menus need to work no matter what, especially since many  programs have moved core functionality to these menus. I think this does need a bug report. I've had a quick peruse of gnome bugzilla and haven't found any similar reports so far.
  • No entries in Gnome applications menu
    Hello,
    Recently all of the entries in my applications menu have dissappeared.  I don't know what did it...
    I tried rm -rf .gnome* .gconf*, but that didn't work.
    Any ideas on how to get them back?
    Try adding a new user and logging into Gnome and see if they come back. If so, transfer your files over and delete the old user. It's faster than trying to debug...
  • Re-add Gnome Icon to fallback mode "Applications" menu
    Hello,
    I'm trying to re-add the gnome icon to the fallback mode "Applications" menu.  Currently, the menu only has "Applications" with no gnome foot to the left of it (like how gnome 2 was laid out):
    Can anyone suggest how to re-add this icon?  I've looked through my theme files but can't seem to find anything relating to the applications menu.
    Thanks!
    -corte
    It's a bug in gnome-themes-standard:
    https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687314
    Until it is not fixed, you have the following options:
    - Revert the patch and rebuild gnome-themes-standard.
    - Downgrade to gnome-themes-standard 3.6.0.
    - Switch to another GTK+ theme.
  • Cannot run scripts via GNOME applications menu
    I have a few posts in the applications menu, like "Android Notifier Desktop" and the commando runs a script: "/usr/share/android-notifier-desktop/run.sh".
    That doesnt work anymore, I have to run it via the terminal now. I think it happend when I upgraded to GNOME 2.32. What to do?
    Thanks for your help. Nothing happens when I click the serial number. But I looked in Library/Receipts and found an update for 10.4.9, so I assume that is what I am running. I am also having problems with other applications such as MS Word and I get a different error message that says "Application Launch Failure: The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "1<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_CarbonCore>"" Any advice?
  • Can't open nautilus from applications menu
    I find that I can't open nautilus from applications menu any more.
    In the terminal, it won't open nautilus when running 'nautilus' without specifying a location or --new-window option.
    I've checked and tried to modify /usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop and /usr/share/applications/nautilus-classic.desktop, but it didn't work.
    The values of Exec option in the two files are as follows:
    /usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop: Exec=nautilus --new-window %U
    /usr/share/applications/nautilus-classic.desktop:  Exec=nautilus --no-default-window --force-desktop
    Also, I have tried to reinstall nautilus. I didn't work, either.
    Any one can help?
    ooo wrote:
    Are you using gnome classic session? Or have you enabled desktop icons?
    Sounds like the nautilus-classic.desktop could be getting launched  during gnome-session startup, which should happen in both of the cases above.
    According to my testing, starting nautilus with 'nautilus --no-default-window --force-desktop' causes the exact behavior you're describing.
    I'm using standard gnome without desktop icons, and I don't have any issues with nautilus, so disabling them would probably help, although that could be a drag if you really want desktop icons.
    I still don't understand why the org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop wouldn't work though, since it has the --new-window flag. Apparently you can't even launch a new window via the right click menu item.
    This could happen if gnome-shell recognizes the nautilus-classic.desktop as nautilus, and starts using it's .desktop file instead when you try to launch a new window.
    If so you could probably fix this from the .desktop file somehow. I might be able to look into it later..
    I'm also using standard gnome, and I have enabled desktop icons.
    Disabling desktop icons makes it work.
    Thanks!
    I once tried to modify nautilus-classic.desktop to Exec=natilus --new-window, but it didn't help.
  • [SOLVED] EvilWM applications menu
    Does anyone know of any good GNOME or KDE style applications menu that I can use with evilwm?
    Last edited by subraizada3 (2013-08-24 17:46:32)
    I mean something like the GNOME 2 menu, with all the applications in it, or the menu in the lower right of KDE.
    Basically just any menu with a list of applications.
    9menu could work but it requires the user to enter the applications.
    The reason I need this is because I often install lots of apps at once (such as games) and look through them / delete the ones I don't like a few days later. Without a menu that adds all the applications in it, I forget about apps that I previously installed, and this can lead to a lot of bloat (dependencies also don't get uninstalled) and occasionally package conflicts.
    You're welcome mate! :)
    <menu id="apps-menu" label="Applications" execute="python2 /home/nic/.config/openbox/scripts/apps"/>
    That's the line I have in my menu.xml for the menu, it points to the script called apps. Below is the script:
    #!/usr/bin/python
    from xml.sax.saxutils import escape
    def icon_attr(entry):
    name = entry.getIcon()
    if os.path.exists(name):
    return ' icon="' + name + '"'
    # work around broken .desktop files
    # unless the icon is a full path it should not have an extension
    name = re.sub('\..{3,4}$', '', name)
    # imlib2 cannot load svg
    iconinfo = theme.lookup_icon(name, 22, Gtk.IconLookupFlags.NO_SVG)
    if iconinfo:
    iconfile = iconinfo.get_filename()
    iconinfo.free()
    if iconfile:
    return ''
    def entry_name(entry):
    print ' <action name="Execute">' + \
    menufile = sys.argv[1] + '.menu'
    else:
    menufile = 'applications.menu'
    lang = os.environ.get('LANG')
    if lang:
    xdg.Config.setLocale(lang)
    # lie to get the same menu as in GNOME
    xdg.Config.setWindowManager('GNOME')
    if icons:
    theme = Gtk.IconTheme.get_default()
    menu = xdg.Menu.parse(menufile)
    print '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>'
    print '<openbox_pipe_menu>'
    map(walk_menu, menu.getEntries())
    print '</openbox_pipe_menu>'
    Make sure you have gnome-menu installed and it should work fine. I am not the author of the script so cannot take any praise for it. ;)
  • XML Publisher - EBS Applications Menu
    Is there a way to create an XML Publisher report in Oracle Applications and then provide it as a menu item on the Applications menu for a specific responsibility? Also, will XMLP reports that use the secure views in Oracle HCM Applications be restricted for users who access them through the apps menu?
    I am considering use of XMLP to create reports for one of the self-service HCM applications.
    Hi,
    If you use the secured views when you are writing the report then your data should be restricted accordingly. I haven't tried with HCM but it definitely works with the standard Operating Unit security.
