Missing Characters in Frame Generated PDFs

I had an odd thing happen, that I thought I'd pass on. I was working on
my Mac to generate some statistical output. I printed out the results to
pdf, imported the results in to a Frame 8 document as a referenced
graphic. I then saved as a PDF with all fonts embedded. When viewing the
resulting pdf, two of the statistical charts had missing characters.
They just were not there. The two pdfs had been generated (accidentally)
using the smallest pdf file setting in Distiller 9. The other
problem-free charts had with all the fonts embedded made it through the
workflow perfectly. Regenerating the charts as pdfs with all fonts
embedded cured the problem with the final pdf.
Who would have thought that pdfs with non-embedded fonts would have
caused a problem down the line?
...Mike

Mike,
It's the same issue as with EPS with non-embedded fonts. FM's PDF
importing routine converts the PDF to an EPS for internal use, so
you're getting a PDF > EPS > PDF conversion taking place in the
workflow. Drop a font and something goes awry.

  • Missing page numbers while generating PDF from Framemaker book

    FrameMaker 9 book files have the correct master page applied and page numbers appear right. However, when generating PDF, the page numbers including the footer is missing.
    I created another book file, yet same issue occurs.
    Also, tried generating separate PDF for each chapter, same issue occurs.
    I have installed Univers font from ATM, I'm using WIndows XP. The Footer tags are in Univers font. Could that be the reason?
    Please advise.

    We have seen a similar problem when the page# was at the right edge of the header or footer frame, and the tab that put it there was too far to the right.
    This is an old problem. It comes from setting tab stop positions in paragraph formats with the cursor in the text frame on the TOC reference page. Nothing wrong with this, EXCEPT when the master page text frame has been made narrower than the reference page's text frame. One way to avoid the problem or to fix it, is to set tab stops in a paragraph in the body page text frame, so the width is correct. Another way is to set the tab stops accurately by number, rather than by eye. Visually, the reference page tab stop will look correct, but the generated TOC uses the master page text frame - if it's narrower than the reference frame, this problem occurs.
    I seem to remember that this might have been fixed in more recent FM releases, but I think that's a false recovered memory, because this is not a bug, just a discrepancy in measurement. There's no way to expect that the prototype paragraph format on the TOC reference page can know if a tab stop will be out-of-bounds on the generated TOC page.

  • Missing characters in generated PDF - Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro

    PDF documents printed from Framemaker or Microsoft Word are missing characters. Usually the missing characters are after bold text or headings. If the text is underscored, the underscores are printed, but the text is not. When I have these source files printed to PDF by someone using Acrobat Distiller included with FrameMaker 7.2, all of the text is included.
    I apreciate any ideas yo may have.

  • Generated pdf file from oracle reports show bad characters

    Hello all,
    Iam fighting with a problem with generated pdf file from oracle reports which show some bad characters. I was searching for some information but it didnt help...
    I have Oracle Database 11g R2 (or 10g R2) on Oracle Linux or Windows, Oracle forms and reports 6i (i know that is very old and not supported with 11gr2 but we are in this scenario).
    NLS parameters are set like this
    server:
    NLS_CHARACTERSET EE8MSWIN1250
    NLS_TERRITORY AMERICA
    NLS_LANGUAGE AMERICAN
    client:
    NLS_CHARACTERSET EE8MSWIN1250
    NLS_TERRITORY SLOVAK
    NLS_LANGUAGE SLOVAKIA
    When I run Oracle Reports it show perfect in display and when I try to print them, they are all good with good characters, but when I try to generate pdf file, some characters like č,š,ľ are not displaying corectly... This happen only when try to generate to pdf...
    I try to work with uifont.ali on client side but without any result. Fonts for reports were installed on client and server side... Can someone help me with this problem? Thank you very much for every advice.
    Martin

    Hi Sergiusz,
    Thank you for your reply. I look at what you wrote and try to make some test...
    1) For first I download FontForge, which can generate type1 font from true type. So I open FontForge and open my Arial.ttf font and use "Generate Fonts" to save my Arial.ttf font to pfb and pfm (whoch are need to set in uifont.ali). I have to change encoding, because my font has 2byte encoding so I reecondode the font from ISO10646-1 to ISO8859-2 and generate to pfb.
    2) Then I navigate REPORTS_PATH from regedit to my *.pfm and *.pfb files.
    3) I add these lines to end of my uifont.ali
    [ PDF:Embed ]
    Arial = "Arial.pfm Arial.pfb"
    ArialNarrow = "ArialNarrow.pfm ArialNarrow.pfb"
    4) Then I generate my report but nothing change... I check "Font used" in my pdf file, but there were not my fonts embedded I guess..
    I also try PDF:Subset, but it doesnt change anything... I try PDF aliasing to see if my uifont is working - this work very well, but I dont need to change font...
    Any other advice? Thank you so much to everyone!

  • InDesign CS4 to PDF - Missing characters

    I created a brochure (2-sided with lots of copy) using InDesign CS4; I exported it to PDF [Compatibility: Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4)].
    When opened in Acrobat 9 Professional on my computer, the file contents were perfect. The file was sent as an email attachment to prepress. When the printer opened it using Acrobat 7.0 Professional (don't know if it was on PC or Mac; they have both), there were missing characters.
    The word "officer" occurred eight times in the document. In two of those occurrences, the characters "ffi" were missing. The remaining 926 words conveyed without a problem.
    Any insights will be appreciated.
    Frank

    Embedding the entire font shouldn't make any difference whatsoever. InDesign embeds all the glyphs that are used. If the font is embedded at all, Acrobat only uses the embedded font.
    Furthermore, Acrobat (including Acrobat 7) uses the local fonts option if and only if the font being accessed is not at all embedded and that particular font is on the user's system.
    What is very suspect here is that the ffi ligature appears correctly in only 2 out of 8 occurrences in the word officer and that you see no problems on your system using Acrobat 9 Pro.
    Here is what I would look for:
    (1) Ascertain that the font is really embedded at all. Use CTRL-D and look to see whether the font is either embedded or subset embedded. If neither, that is the source of the problem. You could also run a preflight profile to ascertain that all fonts are properly embedded.
    (2) You might want to find out what your printer is
    really doing with your file. Is he opening a page or two in Illustrator, something can can cause very strange PDF corruptions? Are there any steps that he is performing before opening it in Acrobat such as processing it in some prehistoric workflow system that has more errors than an early Mets game?
    (3) Find out whether your printer at least has Acrobat 7 updated with all the updates issued by Adobe. They were a whole carload of them. I think about 12 such updates in the 24 months that Acrobat 7 was current. You might also want to suggest that at this point, Acrobat 7 is a fairly old version for any printer that wants to stay up to date in terms of PDF print publishing workflow.

  • ColdFusion 8 drops Arabic characters when generating PDF doc

    Hello All,
    Please let me know what I'm doing wrong here! I have trouble with generating a PDF document from ColdFusion.
    The cfm document contains mixed English and Arabic text and it seems that the ColdFusion's embedded PDF Generator drops Arabic characters when creating the PDF file.
    I attached a bare bone cfm document (see print_test.cfm) that I used as an example to the stated problem.
    The document:
    displays fine in FireFox 3.0.10 (see attached print_test_screenshot.jpg) Used link:
    http://localhost:8500/Print_test.cfm?display=yes
    This image file also shows the characters that get dropped by the ColdFusion's embedded PDF Generator.
    is converted fine in PDF by the FireFox 3.0.10 using print command line (see attached print_test_firefox.pdf) Used command:
    “C:\Program  Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -print "http://localhost:8500/Print_test.cfm?display=yes"  -printmode pdf -printfile "c:\pdf\print_test_firefox.pdf" -printdelay  150
    is NOT converted to PDF properly by the ColdFusion using the embedded PDF generator (see attached print_test_cf.pdf) Used command:  http://localhost:8500/Print_test.cfm
    The print_test.cfm file, which I had to remove since this forum allows me to post only 3 attachments, has the following content:

    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    I've tried:
    adding charset meta tags to the top of my outputted HTML contents that comprise the PDF
    I've tried adding the <cfprocessingdirective pageencoding="utf-8" /> but doesn't seem to help.
    #encodeForHTML(pdfHTMLVariable)# and even just tried encoding the individual variables that contained the special characters but that didn't seem to help anything as encoding them still won't work I'm assuming if the Charset is mis-matched.
    Does the <cfprocessingdirective pageencoding="utf-8"> just have to be within the CFC method or does it need to be within the <cfhtmltopdf> tag?
    Any input or things to try would be much appreciated as this is a regression for our app.
    **As a side note: I would still just use CFDOCUMENT, but there was a different issue where the images were outputting a RED X where the image is supposed to be. Which from what I have been able to uncover has something to do with the server certificate not being trusted or something. However, our SSL provider is listed in the ROOT Certificate Authorities so not sure what's going on with that. Those images were being output with cfimage action of writeToBrowser .
    I'd really like to fix the encoding issue does this have anything to do with language packs or missing languages of that sort? My app displays the page just fine when the UTF-8 charset meta tag is set.

  • XML Publisher generates PDF but concurrent program still completes in error

    Hello,
    I have a concurent program that is used everyday. It generates PDF output with an average of 500 pages. It completes normal majority of the times, but completes in error sporadicallly. Interestingly, when it completes in error, it still generates the PDF output successfully.
    Question is why does it complete in error when all is good?
    Please note that we just went live on R12 from 11i beginning of this year. This issue never occurred in 11i. Please advise what can be done to fix this issue.

    Hi,
    Since you said the behavior is sporadic and also the program was running good in 11i instance, I think its a problem with the data [or select query in the concurrent program] .
    Ideal scenario:
    1. Upon the concurrent program completing in error the pdf should not be generated in first place, since it misguides the obtained report. [Concurrent Program should be modified accordingly, before calling the pdf generation logic you need to check the status of the concurrent program].
    2. It is not likely that the pdf generation should error out upon concurrent program's error, since the concurrent program could have a soft closure of its schema definition [inspite of an uncaught/unhandled exception]
    eg:
    <schema def>
    <Xml element 1> </Xml element 1>
    <Xml element 2> </Xml element 2>
    <Xml element 3> </Xml element 3>
    *_ <while generating elements 4, 5 and so on concurrent program could have errored out, but still the schema definition is valid so the pdf is generated>_*
    </schema def>
    Solution:
    Next time when you get the same behaviour, try running the concurrent program and handle the exception for that scenario, this should resolve your issue.

  • Generate pdf with apex listener 2.0

    hi,
    we would like to generate pdf out of apex.
    as long as we have text (IRR) WITHOUT special characters (öäü), everything is working fine.
    when we have this characters in a text-columng (IRR), then we get a .pdf with the following content:
    javax.xml.transform.TransformerException: com.sun.org.apache.xml.internal.utils.WrappedRuntimeException: An invalid XML character (Unicode: 0x3) was found in the element content of the document.
    could this be a problem of the characterset? but if, where to change what?
    - we defined in ADMIN in 'report printing' / 'instance-settings': oracle-apex-listener
    - we are working with apex-listener 2.0 (integrated in weblogic-server)
    - we work with APEX 4.2.1.00.08
    thanks for any ideas

  • Problem with printing generated pdf.

    Hello!
    I need to print pdf file, that was generated by my application. I am using Apache FOP to generate pdf (xml+xslt). For printing I am using Maxatec MT-150 receipt printer. Seems, that pdf is generated successfully, because I can open it and I also can print it using Windows interface. However, when I am sending it to printer in my JAVA application, printed file is just set of unreadable characters and black lines. I was trying to use different DocFlavors, like DocFlavor.INPUT_STREAM.AUTOSENSE, DocFlavor.URL.AUTOSENSE, but neither had a luck. My code looks like this:
    PrintService receiptPrintService = getReceiptPrinterService(printerName);
    DocPrintJob printJob = receiptPrintService.createPrintJob();
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(new File("StatusReport.pdf"));
    Doc doc = new SimpleDoc(fis, DocFlavor.INPUT_STREAM.AUTOSENSE, null);
    printJob.print(doc, null);
    private static PrintService getReceiptPrinterService(String printerName) {
              PrintService[] services = PrintServiceLookup.lookupPrintServices(null, null);
              for (PrintService printService : services) {
                   if (printerName.equals(printService.getName())) {
                        return printService;
              return null;
         }For some reason I cannot set DocFlavor.INPUT_STREAM.PDF, as it throws following exception: sun.print.PrintJobFlavorException: invalid flavor. (despite the fact that I can pdf using the same printer, but through Windows interface)
    So, I really don't see what is the problem. Should I use something in my xslt template to specify content type? currently I have:
    <xsl:output method="xml" version="1.0" omit-xml-declaration="no" indent="yes"/>Any help would be appreciated.
    Alexander.

    @Dick_Adams
    I am sorry, but what error message are you talking about? The only error I get is "sun.print.PrintJobFlavorException: invalid flavor" and as far as I understand it depends on printer, what is supported and what is not supported. Or am I wrong? I am using standard java.awt.print library.
    @AndrewThompson64, thanks for the tip!)) It does print correctly, but in this case I am not sure I have enough possibilities to control printing. For instance, my pdf was printed as landscape, but I need portrait.

  • Cyrillic Characters not shown in pdf file when xsl is parsed

    Part of the application we have created allows the user to view PDF pages, so they are more suitable for printing.
    We create xsl files which eventually get transformed into the PDF format.
    We use the javax.xml.Transform.Transformer to transform the xsl file and xml.
    We use the org.exolab.castor.xml.Marshallerto general the xml.
    We use Apache Fop to turn the XML into the PDF format.
    Before it was working fine, we get some text from a resource file, which we call in the xsl. But now we want to do this in Russian. When we read the same resource file in the xsl, but with the cyrillic characters in it, the pdf view is just question marks, and other characters. Nothing russian.
    Does anyone know where I could start looking to find out what is wrong?

    just generate the font metrics files for the fonts you intend to use, as explained on FOP web site, then you will get the Cyrillic chars.

  • Frame to PDF font conversion broken in upgrade to Frame 10

    I am using Adobe Garamond Pro font as body text.  In Frame 9, this worked fine, I was able to generate PDFs with correct text.  Now I have upgraded to Frame 10.  I generate the same file as PDF, and the body text looks good except for passages that have been marked as bold text.
    Again, fine when the PDF was generated by Frame 9, but now the bold text is not correctly rendered.  Instead, I get an ugly monospaced, and very jammed-together, word.  Non bold text looks okay. Italic text looks okay.  But the bold text does not.
    Any suggestions as to how can I fix this? I looked in the Frame10 fminit\fonts directory, and AGaramondPro-Bold.otf is there. In fact, the directory looks pretty much the same as the Frame9 version.

    Okay, thanks. I think I have the problem solved, though I'm still not quite certain how it occurred.
    To trouble shoot the Frame 10 problem, I opened up a file in Frame 9 (didn't uninstall it when I upgraded to 10, so I have both installed) and saved as PDF, with the same results, but with an error message that pointed me to the Adobe PDF printer, even though I don't explicitly point to it anywhere. The message said to de-select the option that says "use system fonts only" in the printer properties dialog.
    When I did so, the problem went away.
    Thing is, I never intentionally changed any of the Adobe PDF printer properties. It was working fine in both 9.0 and 10.0 Frame then all of a sudden the problem appeared out of the blue.
    The only thing I can think of that changed between the time it worked and the time it failed is an upgrade from Acrobat to Acrobat X.

  • Missing characters

    I, like others that I see on the forum, have a problem with missing characters. I am inserting pdfs into another pdf and while the original pdf displays and prints perfectly, when I insert it into the master document it no longer is correct. I tried importing the font and I still have the problem. I did the exact same proceedure with almost ecactly the same documents last month that printed almost perfectly. I just tried reopening the previously acceptable file and now it does not display or print properly. I was concerned about a message that said something about optimizing for web display. I supply these documents in printed and pdf format not for the web.

    If you have the fonts used in your documents the following steps should fix the problem:
    1) Use the PDF optimizer to unembed the fonts in your documents.
    2) Use the Preflight capability to re-embed the fonts in your document. I suggest you embed the entire font and not use font subsets, though embedding the font can cause the document size to grow for larger documents the size the embedded font is a not trivial.

  • Reduce smartform generated PDF size

    Hi,
    How to reduce the smartform generated PDF size. I have tried removing few tables,windows, logo(size 10KB) etc.. but the size didnt vary much. I am using new Font 'CorpoS' in my smartstyle and using PT language (has special characters).
    Current size of my PDF is 286KB and i want it to be 20-50KB.
    Please give me valuable suggestions on how to reduce the size.
    Please treat this as urgent.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Open a generated pdf file in new window

    Dear all,
    I'm using JDev ADF 11.1.1.4.0
    I use the command button method to generate pdf file with JasperReports and I store it into the public folder /reports/test5.pdf. To open this file I can use goLink or goButton with target frame _blank, but how can I open this file automatically after generation?
    I was reading about fileDownloadActionListener, but it's not what I need, I just want to open the file in new window browser.
