Missing Large Chunk of HD Space

Hello all, have a question. I tried searching around for an answer, but only managed to become more unsure of things. Some basic info about my Mac:
Macbook Pro, 15 inch (early 2011)
8 GB RAM
OS X Lion 10.7.5 (It originally came with the version before this; I upgraded)
2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
To start, here is a picture:
As we can see here, I have a 697 GB HD. The scan shows in the lower left that the files, including all Applications, currently are occupying 357 GB. If we look to the right side, we can see that I have "Miscellaneous Used Space: 231 GB". So even adding these two numbers, we only get to 588 GB total. 697-588 is 109 GB, but I'm assuming that's the size of the OS.
So my question is, where is my missing 231 GB and how can I use it to store additional files? In my searches I found out about VM, and here's a screenshot of my Activity Monitor:
So this shows a VM size of 222 GB, which is roughly, the amount missing (588-222=368). I have no applications open except Firefox and Activity Monitor. Everything else in the Activity Monitor are things that are fractions of percentage points; they add up to nothing large.
I have only 123 GB of available drive space according to Finder. So if we take that away from the VM, it's still sapping 100 GB. So my question is, what is this VM, and how can I get it back?
I tried reading other topics about it, but they were vague and not very helpful. If anyone can enlighten me, I'd appreciate it.

  • Missing Large Chunk of Hard Drive Space - Pavilion Dv4t

    Hi All,
I purchased a Pavillion Dv4t about a month ago with a 320 gb hard drive. Upon first inspection, I noticed that the drive partitions, when added together, fell way short of 320gb. The C drive plus Recovery drive = 298 gb! I initially wondered if the missing space was a hidden partition containing vista, and that when I custom installed windows 7, I would be able to formatt that part of the drive to install 7. This does not appear to be the case as the install upgrade only showed the 2 partitions totaling 298gigs.
Does anyone know what that missing space is and how to recover it? Or is it something important that I shouldent mess with?
Has anyone else had this problem or noticed that they are missing this much hard drive space?
Also, I've run a hdd diagnodtic test wich showed no drive issues.
    Thanks!

    Capacity measurements
A disassembled and labeled 1997 hard drive. All major components were placed on a mirror, which created the symmetrical reflections.
Raw unformatted capacity of a hard disk drive is usually quoted with SI prefixes (metric system prefixes), incrementing by powers of 1000; today that usually means gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB). This is conventional for data speeds and memory sizes which are not inherently manufactured in power of two sizes, as RAM and Flash memory are. Hard disks by contrast have no inherent binary size as capacity is determined by number of heads, tracks and sectors.
This can cause some confusion because some operating systems may report the formatted capacity of a hard drive using binary prefix units which increment by powers of 1024.
A one terabyte (1 TB) disk drive would be expected to hold around 1 trillion bytes (1,000,000,000,000) or 1000 GB; and indeed most 1 TB hard drives will contain slightly more than this number. However some operating system utilities would report this as around 931 GB or 953,674 MB, whereas the correct units would be 931 GiB or 953,674 MiB. (The actual number for a formatted capacity will be somewhat smaller still, depending on the file system). Following are the correct ways of reporting one Terabyte.
SI prefixes (Hard Drive) equivalent Binary prefixes (OS) equivalent
    1 TB (Terabytes) 1 * 10004 B 0.9095 TiB (Tebibytes) 0.9095 * 10244 B
    1000 GB (Gigabytes) 1000 * 10003 B 931.3 GiB (Gibibytes) 931.3 * 10243 B
    1,000,000 MB (Megabytes) 1,000,000 * 10002 B 953,674.3 MiB (Mebibytes) 953,674.2 * 10242 B
    1,000,000,000 KB (Kilobytes) 1,000,000,000 * 1000 B 976,562,500 KiB (Kibibytes) 976,562,500 * 1024 B
    1,000,000,000,000 B (bytes) - 1,000,000,000,000 B (bytes) -
Microsoft Windows reports disk capacity both in a decimal integer to 12 or more digits and in binary prefix units to three significant digits.
The capacity of an HDD can be calculated by multiplying the number of cylinders by the number of heads by the number of sectors by the number of bytes/sector (most commonly 512). Drives with the ATA interface and a capacity of eight gigabytes or more behave as if they were structured into 16383 cylinders, 16 heads, and 63 sectors, for compatibility with older operating systems. Unlike in the 1980s, the cylinder, head, sector (C/H/S) counts reported to the CPU by a modern ATA drive are no longer actual physical parameters since the reported numbers are constrained by historic operating-system interfaces and with zone bit recording the actual number of sectors varies by zone. Disks with SCSI interface address each sector with a unique integer number; the operating system remains ignorant of their head or cylinder count.
The old C/H/S scheme has been replaced by logical block addressing. In some cases, to try to "force-fit" the C/H/S scheme to large-capacity drives, the number of heads was given as 64, although no modern drive has anywhere near 32 platters.
    [edit] Formatted disk overhead
For a formatted drive, the operating system's file system internal usage is another, although minor, reason why a computer hard drive or storage device's capacity may show its capacity as different from its theoretical capacity. This would include storage for, as examples, a file allocation table (FAT) or inodes, as well as other other operating system data structures. This file system overhead is usually less than 1% on drives larger than 100 MB. For RAID drives, data integrity and fault-tolerance requirements also reduce the realized capacity. For example, a RAID1 drive will be about half the total capacity as a result of data mirroring. For RAID5 drives with x drives you would lose 1/x of your space to parity. RAID drives are multiple drives that appear to be one drive to the user, but provides some fault-tolerance.
A general rule of thumb to quickly convert the manufacturer's hard disk capacity to the standard Microsoft Windows formatted capacity is 0.93*capacity of HDD from manufacturer for HDDs less than a terabyte and 0.91*capacity of HDD from manufacturer for HDDs equal to or greater than 1 terabyte.

    Open the Finder.
From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click View > Show Status Bar
You should now see the the free space available at the bottom of any Finder window and that should change after you empty the Trash.

  • I recently changed from a Mac Pro to an iMac. A large chunk of emails have disappeared. Time Machine is no help. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

I recently changed from a Mac Pro to an iMac. Despite using Migration Assistant, a large chunk of my recent emails and nearly all of my wife's emails have disappeared in transit. Strangely, emails from my distant past are still there. Time Machine is no help; the messages may be on my backup disc but they're behind an invisible  icon. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • I am missing "Warped Effects within my Space Designer.  Please help!!!

I downloaded Logic Pro 9 off app store and it appears that I am missing "Warped Effects" within my space designer.  My friend is running exact same version of Logic Pro 9 and has this setting.  I do not understand why this setting is not present on my Logic.  I have downloaded all additional content besides the Jam Packs.  Please help me!!!  I really need the Warped Effects.  I do not understand how my download ended up without them.  Thanks.

Have you double checked to make sure ALL the additional content was correctly downlaoded and installed by going back to Download Additional Ciontent and checking each of the items by clicking on each of the little Disclosure Triangles...and making sure they all say Installed?
Alternatively you can simply click on the "Select All Uninstalled" button in the bottom left hand corner of the  "Downlaod Addtional Content' window and then click the Install button in the bottom right hand corner.. if it will allow you to.

How do I delete large blocks of empty space with Adobe Acrobat Pro?

How can you delete "empty space"? If you mean that you want to delete lines,
like in Word, so that the text afterwards will go "up the page", then you're
out of luck. You should do that in the original file, and then re-create the
    PDF.

Does the same thing happen on any other books that you have in the app ? If not then it's probably just that one book, in which can you could try deleting the book and re-downloading it - if it re-downloads in the same state then try the 'report a problem' from your purchase history :http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1933

After upgrade to iOS 5 there is a large chunk of data (>9Gb) on the phone labeled as "Other" in iTunes. I suspect this is the music library from before the upgrade. How do I delete this data?

Same happened here on my iphone 4. I heard it's something about bad meta data in the music files but I've no idea. It seems to be fixed by deleting the music from the iphone and then syncing it back on. No need to reset so far luckily!

  • Missing 1gb of hard disk space after upgrading to 2.5 gb of RAM

I recently upgraded my Macbook to 2.5 GB RAM. I took out one 512 MB card and put in a 2 GB one, keeping the other 512 MB one in. After I booted up I noticed I was missing about a GB of space and it was running a bit slow, is this normal after changing RAM?

Not really since VM increases if the demand for VM increases, not the amount of RAM installed. Regardless of the amount of installed RAM the VM file always begins at the same size on startup - 64 MBs with Tiger and Leopard; 128 MBs for earlier versions. If one never runs out of available RAM then the VM file will never change. So in reality the more RAM installed the less likely the VM file size will increase.

  • I/O error (6) when writing too large chunks to Datalog format

I have an application on an NI-PXI-8108, that writes large chunks of data to a datalog file. When it reaches a certain size, I get a generic file I/O error.
The error appears at about 32MB per write action. So there might be a limit or optimization I can change to improve this?
I would prefer not to change the format, so smaller chunks is not an option.
Any ideas or help is very much appreciated.

I've got a simple test VI that proves this issue:
We're using a PXI-8108 btw, I'm not sure if this matters though.
    Any ideas?

  • Missing 3 GB of HD space

I'm doing some cleaning up on my boot partition when I noticed my available HD space is lower than what I expected after installing Leopard (i did a fresh install btw). so, i unhid all invisible items and fired multiple get item info on all files residing in the root and here's what i get:
    http://img210.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screen1gi1.png
12.56 GB of files.. But when I tried to get info the HD it showed:
    http://img128.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screen2sa0.png
15.07 GB used HD space. Clearly I was missing ~3 GB worth of space. I ran disk utility, fsck, even erased free space, deleted vm files (including sleep image) but still no dice. Any ideas folk? thanks.

    Try this:
Launch Terminal from Applications -> Utilities
    type this command:
    sudo du -shx /
you will need admin privileges to get an accurate count which is my guess as to why it seems you are missing 3GB. Your regular user account (even an admin) does not have permission to see all the files on the hard drive especially other users Home directories but many others as well. By using the sudo command you run as root which can always see everything all the time. If you need proof run the command without sudo and it will dump a bunch of permission denied errors.
The command above will take a long time to finish depending on how much used space is on the disk.
    Good luck!

  • Just recently I'm showing that I've lost a very large amount of disc space for no apparent reason?

I have 750GB MacBook Pro and up until the other day I showed 250GB used and 500GB unused.  I discovered this because the past two days my computer would just freeze and I couldn't do anything.  So I ran the Disc Utility and it found some errors and fixed them.  So I'm wondering if the 400GB of lost disc space now has something to do with the computer locking up? I've searched all the folders and added up their size and still come back to 250GB that I can see.  So I'm assuming there's something hidden somewhere that's eating up over half my hard disc space?  HELP!

    BNK12 wrote:
So somewhere I have between 450 - 500 GB's taking up my disk space?
Yes, exactly. The total used, per the sidebar, is 735 GB, but the total at the top is 269 GB, leaving 466 GB unaccounted-for.  As mentioned in the Other large files section of the Where did my Disk Space go? article, the similar free apps don't show things the logged-on user isn't permitted to see. Unfortunately, the version of WhatSize on the AppStore doesn't, either. A few of those are detailed in the green box.
First, have you Verified your internal HD, per the link in the yellow box at the top of the article?  If not, do so.  If that doesn't say your disk "appears to be ok," follow the instructions there to start from your Recovery HD and Repair it, then have WhatSize re-measure your drive.
If that doesn't help, do you have more than one user account (besides the 230 GB bkundinger)?  If so, log on to the other(s), use WhatSize to see how large those home folders are, and add them to the 269 GB total.
If not, or if that doesn't explain the difference, you need to be able to see everything.  Probably the best way to do that is with the version of WhatSize that you get directly from the vendor -- just click the link in the green box or go to http://whatsizemac.com.  That version has the "As Admin" icon in the toolbar, per the sample in the green box.  Click it and enter your Admin password, then have it re-measure your internal HD.
That will take a few moments, of course, but the resulting display should show everything, including the missing 466 GBs.  As noted, don't delete anything you don't understand; if in doubt, post the new screenshot here.

  • Missing some impulse resposes for Space Designer

I just realized that that the impulse respones for the "Warped effects" are missing. They are not located under the Library/Audio/Impulse responses/Apple folder where the others are.
Does anyone know how to get them?
    I'm on Logic Pro 9.1.1
    Thanks Morten

In the folder you describe, I have 4 folders, Large, Medium, Small, and Surround Spaces. In each of those folders is another folder for "Warped." Do you not have that?
I also found an Impulse Response folder in Library/Application Support/Soundtrack Pro. You could look there or see if there's one in the Logic folder. Nothing that was marked "Warped", but there were some of the same responses in there.
