Mixing 1440 x 1080 with 1920 x1080

I have two Canon video cameras, the XHA1 which shoots HDV @ 1440 x 1080 @ 23.98FPS and a Canon 7D which shoots H2.64 @ 1920 x 1080 @ 23.98 FPS. I want to inter mix them in the same Final Cut timeline of ProRes 422.
Since the majority of the footage was shot on the 7D I would prefer to up scale the XHA1 footage from 1440 to 1920. Can this be done and if so how?
Thanks
Kent

I am not cross posting. It would seem to me that I would need to convert the XHA1 clips to 1920 x 1080 and that I should do that in Compressor. I am not sure of what or if that can be done. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • How to edit 1440 x 1080 with SQUARE PIXELS?

Yes, I know it's weird. I would like to edit 1440 x 1080 with square pixels - HD with a standard aspect ratio. Unfortunately, any preset in 1440 x 1080 (HDV for example) is anamorphic and won't let me change it to square pixels. How do I create a project in 1440 x 1080 with square pixels?
I know I can alter the aspect ratio on export, but that would squish the images, so that won't do. I need to maintain square pixels from start to finish.

Ah, but it is not coming from a camera. I am creating it from images. In fact the main purpose of creating this video is
so the projectionist can adjust zoom and focus to bring the projector back to optimal "standard" settings while the audience has something funny to watch. Sure, I could create it in DV 4:3 format, but my images are already sized for 1080 height (I made a similar video for adjusting the zoom/focus for widescreen, which is really 4:3 with the top and bottom offscreen since the projector doesn't do 16:9). It is an older projector before HD standards and 16:9, but is higher resolution than the typical 4:3 formats. Another reason I want to use higher resolution is because I previously made the video at 720 x 480 resolution and it looks much better in HD.
So the question remains - how do I set custom resolution with square pixels?

  • 1440 x 1080 to 1920 x 1080

Just curious. My workflow is to import HDV 1440x1080i as 422 prores and then add it to a sequence with the same properties except I've changed the frame size on the pro res sequence to 1920x1080 as I've no need of anamorphic pixels as my target output is square pixels mostly. When I add the HDV 1440 pro res footage to the 1920 sequence there is no rendering required even though in the motion tab for each clip the scale is 133.333. I understand of course why the scaling occured ( in one direction ) but why has FCP accepted this without requiring it to be rendered.?

When you drop the anamorphic clip on to the non-anamorphic timeline, do you get a green render bar above the clip?
A green reneder bar does not mean that the clip does not require rendering, it means the Final Cut Pro and your machine have sufficient horsepower to play the unrendered clip back in real time, doing the computation for the scaling to display the enlarged image in real time.
If you were to export this timeline to a Quicktime file, FCP will render it during the export.

  • 1440 x 1080 in & 1920 x 1080 out

I'm correcting footage shot with a Canon HV20, captured with Apple's ProRes 422, 24p Workflow, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2410. This leaves me with 1440x1080, non-square pixeled, ProRes 422 footage. Since the only logical, available option in Color is for me to choose a 1920 x 1080 aspect, does it make sense for me to modify Apple's suggested workflow to output my footage from Compressor as square pixeled, 1920 x 1080 footage or am I asking for trouble? Am I missing something? I'd think the modification to that workflow would allow me to keep sequence settings the same across all of Apple's apps.

I've never tried it, but I don't see what it would hurt. I've captured HDV into ProRes via FW and having it be 1440x1080 instead of full raster is rather inconvenient.

  • Does iMovie'08 import 1920 x 1080 at 1440 x 1080

After some thought the subject (Sony HDR SR11 resolution) of my last post yesterday may include all HD camcorders with 1920 x 1080 resolution. when iMovie'08 imports the files they are saved as quicktime movies. When played in quicktime and the details looked at in Movie Inspector (quicktime/window/show movie inspector) the format is shown as Apple Intermediate Codec 1440 x 1080,
    Does iMovie'08 import 1920 x 1080 at 1440 x 1080 and then output it at 1920 x 1080 ?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Look at this very interesting link about H.264 CODEC and web compression:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/qt_h-264_moviesfcp.html
As WEB involves many compression and smaller frame sizes, the quality will be on par for both formats.
iDVD will accept HD sequences movies from FCE but it will convert them to standard definition as it cannot output (authoring and burning) high def blu-ray DVD.
Look at this link (altough you don't have ProRes codec with FCE package...) about HDV limitation for DVD usage:

  • Why LiveType chnage my settings to 1440 x 1080 instead of 1920 x 1080 ?

    Hi there,
I import in some effects into Final Cut Express 4 from the .ipr fiIes created in LiveType.
In LiveType under the Preference, I clearly select Apple 1080i50 ... but when I goto FCE4 & import in the LiveType .ipr file, the properties showed it as 1440 x 1080. Isn't Apple 1080i50 is 1920 x 1080 ?
Does that mean the rest of my sequence & clips in Timeline (which was recorded in 1920 x 1080) will be downgraded to 1440 x 1080 when I render the whole sequence ?
Another thing, that is puzzling me, when I open up the same LiveType project file & see the project properties, it has changed to HDV 1440 x 1080 despite me changing & saving earlier to Apple 1080i50
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

How does it appear in FCE?
    Is it OK?
It's probably something to do with HDV being 1440x1080 but playing as 1920x1080.
As long as it looks and works OK I wouldn't worry about it.

  • HV20 HD video imported as 1440 * 1080 - expected 1920 * 1200

I used my Canon HV20 to take HD video.
I captured the video within Premiere Pro CS4 (4.1.0)
    The resulting resolution was 1440 * 1080
    Shouldn't it be 1920 * 1200 ?
    What am I missing here.
    Thx

The HDV format is 1440 x 1080 using non-square pixels to 'stretch' the image the full width.  This is normal.  You work in a 1440 x 1080 preset for this media.
(On a side note, there are no video specifications using 1200 vertical pixels, only 1080 and 720 for HD.)

  • Why does export with "current settings" compress 1440 x 1080 to 720 x 480?

I am trying to export some clips from fcp x to motion (wish you didn't have to do this, to begin with). Anyway, my clips are being exported in a lower quality )720 x 480)-- all of the choices in the "export" drop-down menu are 720 x 480, even though the clip is 1440 x 1080, imported to dfcp from hdv format.
Thanks for the help; this is driving me nuts.

Ah, well it says 1440 x 1080 in the project that I am editing, but since I wanted to only fix a short clip, I created a "to fix" project and put the files I want to fix in there to export. That project had defaulted to 720 x 480--there's the problem. Thanks, yet another.

  • Premiere CS6 crashes with 1920 x 1080p files

I have recently been using my Sony A77 SLR as a video source. I had no problems with MP4 files 1440 x 1080 to match my HDV cameras. Now I have tried AVCHD 1920 x 1080 files, Premiere crashes. I do not even have to edit anything. After loading files, then using the project bin to browse files by hovering with the mouse, the application will bomb after looking at a few files.

Hi Steven and Lasvideo. I am not sure that a short piece will help. I just brought in 4 selections from 400MB clips and it was OK. It then crashed when I double-clicked to load another for editing in the Preview window.
My system is Windows 7, i& with 12GB RAM and a Qudro 400 card. Premiere has just been updated to 6.0.3, but I still had the problem in 6.0.2. Waiting on a RAID array, so currently using internal drives or USB 3 externals. These have been fine for everything lse, including multicam of HDV with 6+ cameras.
I tried going back to the software, rather than GPU from the 400, but it made no difference. I also have discussion started about the NV Transmit windows popping up all the time, but no one has replied yet.
Have spent a lot of time with NVIDA helpdesk, trying to diagnose that problem, and have tried several drivers with no improvement.

  • How do I set up Premiere as ProRes 422 at 1440 x 1080?

    Hello.
I am still on the learning curve for Premiere Pro having held out on FCP 7 for as long as possible.
    Anyway.
I need to edit a project that was shot on HDV.
It was originally captured as ProRes 422 in FCP at 1440x 1080. I am now importing the video files into Premiere.
I want to continue to edit in ProRes 422 at 1440 x 1080.
I have the ProRes 422 codec installed for Premiere but I can't figure out how to change it from its default of 1920 x1080. When I change the 1920 to 1440 it changes the 1080 to 810.
I might be doing this in the wrong place. I am attempting to change it in the sequence settings under video previews. I can't seem to find anywhere else to change it.
    Can someone please advise?
    Many thanks.

Open a matching  Sequence by dropping the clip on the "NEW ITEM" Icon at bottom of the Project Panel.

  • Create a 1440 x 1080 comp

    Hi,
I need to create a 1440 x 1080 comp which is the same dimentional size of my video.
I tried to create a new comp and dragged my video to new comp icon, what I get is not a 16:9 aspect ratio.
The only thing I could get 16:9 aspect ratio is by selecting HDTV 1080 preset.
As this preset is designed for 1920 x 1080, my video is only 1440 x 1080. Not sure if this is the correct approach. The preview in AE looks fine to me, am I doing it right?
Why doesn't AE let me create 1440 x 1080 comp with 16:9 aspect ratio? Anyone know?
I attach a screen capture of my setting of creating 1440 x 1080 comp but this setting only give me 4:3 aspect ratio.
    Thanks.

You are not understanding pixel aspect ratios and your footage. Here's the problem, 1440 X 1080 is a standard comp size for a non square pixel format. There's only one of those formats and it's not useful for anything but acquiring footage from the cameras that use that format. You're better off, unless you specifically need to render back to the DVCPro codec that supports this frame size, working in a 1920 X 1080 Square Pixel HD comp. Your graphics will look better, you won't be sub pixel sampling still images brought in to the project, and you'll be able to see exactly what the project will look like.
If you drag your DVCPro HD footage into a 1920 X 1080 comp then it will fit perfectly. No need to do anything.
If there's a specific reason that you MUST render back to the DVCHD Pro format then let us know. Other wise, just use a standard HD comp with a matching frame rate. You will be a happier camper

  • HD movie files need constant RENDERING in FCP 24p HD 1440 x 1080 sequence.

    Hi,
I have been editing a feature film which which uses a FCP 24p HD 1440 x 1080 timeline (sequence, or many different sequences actually). The movie was filmed exclusively on a Canon HV40 camera using, of course, 24p HD footage, widescreen. However, I am now adding footage shot on a small Canon Powershot digital camera which also can shoot decent HD video (.mov files likewise, but not in 24p). When I put this HD video into my timeline, a red render bar appears above the footage, and apparently I have to render the footage before being able to view any of it in "Safe RT" mode. When in "Unlimited RT" mode, an orange bar appears above the footage, and it "plays", but the footage plays very unsteady, stopping and starting, making it nearly impossible to edit fast & intuitively because the eyes/mind don't see the full clips in all their natural wonder/splendor. One just sees images that skip and fumble by, along with their sounds, and it's somewhat headache-inducing. Is there any cure for this? I have lots & lots of Powershot footage to edit into this film, but at this rate it will really slow down the natural flow of editing if i can see the footage as nature or god or Buddha or humans intended it to be viewed.'
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Marc

    David,
It might seem simple and obvious from your end, but these issues are pretty spanking new to me - despite editing for years in FCP they've just never come up. I'm a simple aim & shoot, edit & print sorta guy. So, I don't know, for instance, how to convert the 940 footage to to my Canon HV40 footage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did run a sample of mixed clips through through compressor, and there does seem to be some degrading of quality on the 940 footage, tho' I'll accept/use it like that if I have to. Luckily all the 940 footage appears in the film as flashbacks of sort from the main character, so the degrading element of the 940 footage might have a redeeming stylistic affect - MAYBE. But I'd rather keep it as pure of footage as I possibly can muster.
    Thanks much,
    Marc

  • Edit H264 (1440 x 1080) video in FCP7 using MacBook Pro?

I have hundreds of H264 (1440 x 1080), 29.97 fps, 12.01 Mbps video files that I must review and edit very quickly.. I would like to edit them directly in FCP7 using a MacBook Pro that is about 8 months old with 8GB of ram. I read that the MacBook Pro has a H264 chip in it so you can edit those files without converting them first. The files range in size from 30MB to a GB. I don't want to have to convert the files first unless I have no choice.
I also have some TOD HD files that I am have to convert since FCP7 will not edit them. I have started converting them to to ProRes 422 lte (unless someone tells me to do otherwise).
The output will be 1000 DVD.s for parents and students that expect a professional looking DVD.
I will not be doing any zoom or crop editing.
    I have three questions:
    1. Can I edit h2564 MPEG4 files in FCP7 using a MacBook Pro?
    2. If I have to convert first, Should I use ProRes 422 lte or something else?
    what should my settings be?
    Bit rate: 256, 512, 768 or 1024?
    Size: 640, 1280, 1440 or 1920?
    3. I tried using MPEG Streamclip, but it didn't seem to do as good of a job as another converter (Aunsoft)I was using. Is this my imagination? StreamClip is really fast and files are smaller, but quality is crucial.
I would greatly appreciate someone that can steer me in the right direction. Thank you!

I read that the MacBook Pro has a H264 chip in it so you can edit those files without converting them first.
This is not correct. The media needs to be converted to a production format to work properly in FCP.
    1. Not without rendering.
    2. ProRes LT. The bit rate doesn't matter. ProRes sets it. The size and frame rate should be the same as the original.
    3. Is this my imagination?
Yes. If Streamclip is used correctly it encodes as well as a basic Compressor encode.

  • PE12 Letterboxing Youtube 1440 x 1080 PAL HD Upload

Hi, I have just upgraded to PE12 and am having difficulty getting my uploads how I want them. Source files are 1440 x 1080 PAL video and I uploaded to Youtube using the 1440 x 1080 PAL setting. These are being letterboxed which with PE10 they were not.
    http://youtu.be/zrOiTbgw7Yc
(I know the video quality in this case is hopeless but that doesn't matter, I want to find the right way to do it so I get full use of the Youtube player for visitors to my channel.)
    Cheers
    Andrew

    Andrew
    Thanks for the reply.
If you are telling me that the rendered 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 plays back in the OK (aspect ratio and otherwise) in the Edit area monitor but has display problems in what you are seeing at YouTube after the Timeline upload using Premiere Elements YouTube feature, then this is not a Premiere Elements issue. This is a YouTube player issue which is out of the realm of Premiere Elements.
Your source is 1440 x 1080 4:3 before its 16:9 flag is recognized by the YouTube player and the YouTube player responds to the 16:9 by stretching the 1440 x 1080 4:3 to 1920 x 1080 16:9. The problem that some players can have with recognition of the 16:9 flag is known. Based on your results using the YouTube 1920 x 1080 preset, this seems to be a viable explanation for the problem that you presented.
There are two additional ways that we might prove that to the both of us
    1. Export your Timeline content to a file saved to the computer hard drive as 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 and then upload that to YouTube at the YouTube web site. Did you have YouTube display issues?
(I will try this later today.)
    2. Is this a "it worked before but not now" or "it never worked before" issue for you?
If it worked before, how many times?
(I do not recall the last time I used the Premiere Elements YouTube feature to upload 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 Timeline. I will do that later today.)
    3. Just in case note....when you are looking at your 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 Timeline content in the Edit area monitor, the space there is one for the stretched version 1920 x 1080 16:9, not 1440 x 1080. The Edit area monitor is a player controlled by the project in contrast to the YouTube player and video conversion which is controlled by YouTube.
Then we can rejoin this thread to compare results.
    Thanks.

  • How to make compressor give me 1280x720   h.264 from my 1440 x 1080 sequenc

can someone please tell me how to make compressor give me 1280x720 h.264 from my 1440 x 1080 sequence, with compressor I load up my high defition h.264 but i cant see where i can chage the size, I can tab on the preset and change max bit rates and other stuff but not to make it 1280 x 720,
    Thanks for the help,
    Daz

    In Compressor 3's Settings window:
Apple > Apple Devices > H.264 for Apple TV
this is one of the presets that is supplied as standard and it is pre-configured for H.264 1280x720 output
if you're building your preset from scratch then you can set the output frame size in the Dimensions area of the Geometry pane
