Mixing surround 5.1 in FCP with Revolution 5.1?

After some research today, I am starting to wonder if I could get a M-Audio Revolution 5.1 PCI card and use it to do live monitoring out of FCP. This is what I'm thinking... Set the Revolution up in the Audio MIDI Setup for 5.1 output (my first question is...does the Revolution support that kind of audio setup in the Audio MIDI Setup?) Then, in FCP5 set the audio out to 6 channels (which should be supported now with the Revolution) and set the audio tracks on the timeline to use the different channels. The output from the card would go to my 5.1 surround receiver for surround sound.
So, does this sound like it would work? In theory it should work...however that has not always been true.
Looking to your feedback,
Matthew Rogers

I don't mind as much having not having the panning because I can do that manually with multiple tracks and just mix it down for each final surround track. I have an Onkyo system (http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=HT-S570&class=Systems&p=i) with inputs for each channel. What kind of receiver are you going into to make the 5.1?
Right now I am just guessing trying to get the surround to sound correct, would be nice to not have to guess as much.

  • Exporting Surround AC-3 from FCP with Compressor

I have a sequence in Final Cut with Video and the 6 audio tracks of a 5.1 surround configuration from the audio editor. I would like to be able to export the video as MPEG-2 and Audio as AC3 in one step using compressor.
I understand how to assign these tracks to seperate outputs of the FCP mixer, export audio as individual AIFFs and then send them to Compressor or APACK manually,but....
I'm wondering is there a way in which Compressor can recognize these discrete outputs and encode them directly to AC3 without having to "export audio as Aiff" first?

      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I checked the FCStudio Workflows pdf, and it does not describe a method for exporting surround directly to compressor from a multichannel FCP sequence. I think this may be a limitation of the audio format, either aiff, or the quicktime movies, in that they only support 2-channel audio. FCP will give you separate outputs for monitoring and output, but the quicktime files that compressor uses as its source are probably limited to 2 channels, hence the need to output the 3 pairs as individual files.

  • How to correctly import .mts into FCP with full 5.1 audio

Well, I've found a couple of solutions to this so far. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a stickie, but it might be useful to others as well.
Getting the audio from new consumer video cameras, for example my Sony HandyCam, which have 1080p video, and 5.1 surround sound audio into FCP can be a bit tricky. The hard part is the audio. FCP will import the camera's .mts files fine using Log and Transfer, but the audio is mixed down to stereo.
This solution was posted over at Ken Story's FCP boards:
    http://www.shedworx.com/hd-information/surround-sound
Although I haven't tried it, it looks very good.
I actually tried the following method, using Parallels (i.e., some form of Windows):
I used TSMuxer in Windows to demux the .mts files. I then used BeLight which is a front end GUI for BeSweet **(you have to download both, and drag both the BeSweet application and the azid.dll file into the BeLight folder before you run). This separates the resulting .ac3 file into 6 mono .wav files.
I then just imported them back into FCP and all was well.
The advantage of this method is that it's free, but the major disadvantage is that it only runs in Windows, so you have to have a PC or emulator. So next time, I'll likely give VoltaicHD a spin.
Hope this helps anyone trying to do the full import to FCP

Oooof! Does this mean that we have to do this procedure, using VoltaicHD, for each and every one of the ~1750 clips with 5.1 surround I have from my trip to China? Perhaps I misunderstood, but it looked like this process was a one-clip-at-a-time process?

  • What software is available for mixing surround sound on a G4?

I'd like to mix surround sound for a videographer without having to upgrade from a G4 with 10.3.9. All the software (Cubase SX, Nuendo, Logic, etc.) seem to demand OS 10.4. Any ideas out there?

  • What does registering FCP with Apple do?

If I am selling an old, unused copy of FCP with a unique serial number, how do I license it to my friend if I have already registered it with Apple? Will that make a difference? The License agreement says I can transfer ALL rights to a new person, provided FCP is intact. Can I unregister it with Apple? What does registering with Apple even do?
    thanks

I'm pretty sure all you need to do is call 1-800-myapple... and they can arrange the license transfer.

  • Exporting 6 channel discrete mono tracks (5.1 mix) I only get 2 tracks with compressed audio and 4 empty track on my output.

Exporting 6 channel discrete mono tracks (5.1 mix) I only get 2 tracks with compressed audio and 4 empty track on my output. I'm using Premiere Pro CC14, sequence settings and export setting pasted below.  Please help need to export feature trailer for iTunes release next week.  Yikes!!!

Thanks for the notes.  Im almost there but not quite.  I create my sequence 5.1 like you said
then map the dots and LFE.  But when I go export media is only give me the option of 1 track 5.1 not 6 discrete channels.
I check my settings and they LOOK right
then I go into my modify clip settings and I see the number of audio tracks as 1 so maybe thats why Im getting only 1 channel 5.1.
But when I select different settings in modify clip environment I can get it to LOOK correct to me
everything seems to be assigned correctly.  But when I go back to export it only still gives me the same option of exporting with 5.1 as a single track.

    Evening all,
I was work for a TV station and currently we're using Avid's Unity storage with the Media Manager application. Is it possible to use FCP with this system?

I currently have a PC with Windows Outlook.  If I add an iPad to the mix, how does the iPad interface with Windows Outlook?

Isn't Outlook simply an email client or a software application on a computer? You can add an email account - whatever email provider that you use - right on the iPad. You can sync your Outlook contacts and calendar if that is what you are asking about, but Outlook itself has nothing to do with the iPad.

  • Surround 5.1 connection problem with an unusual twist

    I have an audio integration problem;
I have recently bought a 5.1 Home Cinema Sound System with a DVD player, and would like to connect this to my studio set-up to use for mixing in Logic Express.
Now, I have an external audio interface that supports 8 outputs (up to 7.1) and would like to connect 6 of these to the dvd player with a TOSLINK or HDMI.
In short,(I think) I need a device that can turn six 1/4" jacks into optical or HDMI.
Can anyone offer me a name of a device that can do this, or a way with the available tech to get TRUE surround sound to the speakers?
    Cheers,
    Darius

no one can help me? were are the auto-detection headphone's settings?

  • Multi channel audio not exporting from fcpx xml as mono to logic always comes in a mixed surround

I have a long edit cut with 24 bit multi channel wav files (i.e 6 microphones on separate tracks but in a single wav file.)
This is very a very common production practice.
when i import into fcpx it defaults to seeing the files as surround. I change this to mono so i can mix and spit the audio between each mic.
The last step in the edit is to hand the mix off to the sound designer in logic.
however no matter how i export the xml file for logic. it always comes in as a surround file again instead of mixed mono files.
it shows up in logic as 6 tracks but all but generally only the top track has a mono mix of all 6 and the rest are blank.
it shows that all 6 are seen as 5.1 surround indicated by the icon.
interestingly if i just import the file directly into logic it comes in as 6 mono files. (the icon for mono showing and all are separate microphones)
Any ideas on how to get fcpx not to export the audio xml as surround? (it seems that it is locked to that on import no matter how i modify after)

Ok so i order to help anyone who is interested.
The only ironic solution to this problem i found was to use a plugin called xto7 to convert the xml to the old fcp7 format.
i then imported this into premiere pro.
this was then able to export an OMF that when imported into logic 10 that was using the correct 6ch mono setting as separate tracks.
Insane but it works until Apple fixes the incorrect meta data import in FCPX that sets the xml export to the default import that is always surround.
this is the only way i was able to send stems with all the edit points and fades for the sound editor.
If you don't have premiere lying around you maybe able to do it with fcp7 too we just didn't have it in this studio.
Fingers crossed Apple fixes the fcpx xml export.

  • Exporting QT file from FCP with multiple audio channels...?

Is there a way to export a QT file out of FCP that will not mix down all of your audio? This file could be a FCP QT or just a regular QT, doesn't really matter!
But If I wanted to edit with self contained Qts that had been synced from a wav file that had 8 tracks, Each from a different mic. How is this possible?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi -
    For FCP 7:
    Click on your timeline.
Type Command - 0 (Zero) and click on the Audio Outputs Tab.
Change the number of outputs you want, and set the track pairs up as stereo or dual mono, as you want.
Click OK, a warning dialog box will come up that you can dismiss.
On the timeline, Option-Click on each audio track right below the auto-select toggle icon, and from the drop down menu, route the track to the desired output track.
When done, export the Quicktime movie.
The only way you will verify that all the tracks are there is to either open the exported quicktime in Quicktime pro and menu Window > Show Movie Properties. You'll see the additional tracks listed there -OR- just import the exported movie back into FCP and bring it up in the Viewer, you'll see all the audio tracks.
Make sure you restore your sequence back to two channel ouput, if you want, when you are done.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mixing a 1GB memory (DDR3 1067Mhz) with a 4gb (DDR3 1333MHZ)

    hi there
i currently have 2gb (2x1) ddr3 1067mhz on my macbook pro. I'm thinking of upgrading it to 5gb, so I would take off one of the 1gb memories and insert a 4gb one.
problem (?) is, the 1gb memory is 1067 and the 4gb one is 1333. when I asked the seller (on ebay) about this, this is what he replied:
"Hello thanks for contacting us. The brand we use
is Dane-Elec and the memory speed is 1333MHz but
they are backwards compatible to clock back to
    1067MHz no problem."
First of all, is this possible ? And even if it is, he probably doesn't know I'm mixing a 1067Mhz memory with a 1333mhz one.. can anyone clarify this for me ? Thank you !
    Rick.

While that's technically right, it's wrong for the mac.
True enough, I didn't try too hard to downclock the memory on my trials, because I believe it's just not possible to do on the mac. Anyway I've managed to do 3 experiments proving that 1333 just won't run on a core 2 duo made to work with 1066.
    1. 2x 2GB 1333 Kingston - crash
    2. 1GB 1067 original with my mac + 4GB 1333 OCZ - works
    3. 2x 4GB 1333 OCZ - crash
The Bus Speed will always stay at 1.07 GHz and the Memory Speed, if matched with another 1333, will stay at 1333, and will crash your system. It WON'T work at all!
At other hand, if you join 4GB 1333 with 1GB 1067, the bigger and faster one will automatically downclock to adjust and everything will work just fine. You'll sure lose the dual channel, but it's worth it (strictly technically speaking, not considering market and costs).

  • Z77A-GD65 mixing two DDRAM pack, same brand with same parameters problem

Hello. I have question. My mobo is z77a-gd65. I have 16gb of ram. Is it pack of 4x4gb modules from corsair vengeance lp (CML16GX3M4A1600C9). Because one module is damaged (tested in memtest) i buy new pack. This new pack is absolutely the same as previous but only 8gb (2x4gb). Is it same brand and timings (CML8GX3M2A1600C9). My problem is.. i can not enable the xmp profile in bios. This option is not accesible if i use 2x2gb from first pack and 2x2gb from second pack. Next problem.. if i change the ddram frequency  manually to 1600mhz (from 1333 - detected whith bios) which is default fq after save settings and restart, bios automatically set frequency to 1333. I try use oc genie but the same and no luck.
Is not possible use two different memory pack from one brand with absolutely same parameters? Why i cant use and is disabled xmp option? Why bios automatically changing ddram frequency?
    Thanks.

Corsair warns of mixing RAM even with the same exact part numbers. Best thing to do would be to contact Corsair and ask them to replace what you have with a factory matched and tested RAM kit. I have heard they are very good about doing that for the end user.

  • Trying to compare FCP with Media 100 for a Public Access studio

    Hi all,
I am new here. I do most of the review of products for our Public Access studio. We have a couple of existing Media 100 systems and we are considering adding or upgrading our NLE capabilities. Our studio manager had a chance to look at FCP being used at our high school and she came back with a number of impressions that I wonder about and would like to vet with people who know more about FCP. So, any comments would be helpful.
The high school media person demo’d FCP for her and let her play with it a bit. After looking at it herself, she says she would definitely say Media 100 is easier to understand/use, especially if you've never used non-linear editing before. That is fairly typical of the people doing Public Access production in our town.
However, it looks to her like there are a lot of tools that come with FCP that Media 100 either doesn't have or are not easily found in it. For example, she feels FCP’s set up looks more complicated and confusing compared to Media 100’s, but in FCP you can have up to 99 video lines in a program, where with Media 100 we're just going back and forth between the a and b video lines. Plus you can have up to 99 Audio tracks on FCP as well, where our max at the moment is 8. Now as to when you would need 99 video or audio tracks, she is not sure, but it is definitely a capability that we don't have in Media 100.
Titling looked easier to her on Media 100. With FCP there were a lot of filters involved and hoops to jump through, plus she couldn't do a word with each letter a different color, for example, unless she did each letter on a different track.
The media person warned her that FCP is really large. Apparently the program itself takes up like 35 GB of space on the hard drive, and a typical 30 min. project comes in at over 100 GB! She couldn't believe it, but she was assured it’s true. Even with our longest programs, like like a School Committee meeting thqat went 3 1/2 hours, it would came in at a max of 30 GB on the Media 100. She got the impression this big difference was so because Final Cut renders everything you do, including rendering any edits you make on your footage as new files, and stores it all in a huge folder. She thinks with Media 100, you import the footage and use it as is - the only things it will render are screen freezes, transitions, and color effects. Is that sort of comparison correct (and fair), or is something being missed?
She says in her experience that something like iMovie is the most basic as far as what you can do, then Ulead would be a step above that- the editing is basically the same, but you have a few more options. Media 100 would be next as far as ease of use and understanding of the program. FCP seemed a little confusing even to her. Comments or insights?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Welcome to the family, maybe.
I switched from M100 about four years ago, I was never so glad to give that company the boot. A direct comparison just isn't possible but I'll try to answer some questions. There is a Media 100 forum on creativecow.net.
she says she would definitely say Media 100 is easier to understand/use, especially if you've never used non-linear editing before.< </div>
Yes, absolutely, M100 has always had an elegant and refined interface. However, the paradigm in FCP is not opaque. It's far more interesting, deeper, more complex. So, yes, it's a bit tougher to grasp. But don't sell your students/users short. They'll get it.
99 tracks is marketing BS. The serious work is done with nesting. How many public access pieces need more than 5 or 10 video tracks?
Titling in FCP depends on third party filters like Boris or tools like LiveType and Motion. The basic titling tools in FCP are lame and difficult to use, in my opinion, compared to the elegant titler in M100 (as long as you don't launch Graffiti).
The installation includes tens of gigs of animation, movie and music loop resources that you don't need to load. The suite includes Motion, LiveType, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro and FCP.
If you're shooting DV, a 3-1/2 hour show is, umm, well, you look it up, DV is DV. But if you're capturing 3 hours from each of three cameras, that's a lot of DV.
Rendering depends on lots of things. M100's native codec handles lots of realtime stuff that FCP can't unless you've got a huge Macintosh. Previewing is not a big deal at lower rez in FCP, you get used to it. .
FCP is really scary. You can look at thousands of "I'm in way over my head, HELP!" posts here. But all those folks find they slip right into the Apple paradigm, the weirdly new workflow and start exploring the wide new world of serious editing that FCP opens up. You'll hate it for a few months because it's so dramatically different from M100. You'll love it, though.
If you want to continue the thread, give the rest of the disaffected former M100 users a few days to post their comments. There are many of us here. Then maybe start a new thread, one question at a time.

  • Logic pro x mixer window freezes main out VU with dual monitors

In a dual display configuration, with the mixer window in the left monitor and arrange window in the right monitor, the VU meter on the last channel strip to the far right of the mixer window(which is usually the main output) freezes and does not update. This seems to be a Logic X bug, since it does not occour in Logic 9 or any other DAW with the same configuration.
Can anyone confirm this or have a suggestion for a solution?
    Thanks in advance

They have had four years to change this, and actually people were asking for it before that. If anyone knows a way, let us know, but I doubt it. Both Logic and Cubase are the only two DAWS that don't allow this....all the majors do....Pro Tools, DP, Studio One, etc. Cubase users have been asking for it forever as well.
I would have upgraded immediately if they had added this, they haven't, and I'm moving over to PT11.
