Mobile maps

Hi! I need help for a school project. The idea of the project is that users can upload a map (an image), supply the necessary information (to be stored in a database), so that other users can download the map and view it on their mobile phones. Example, the users can select which map to download and run on their phones.
I was wondering if you have any ideas/suggestions on how best to do this project.
Many thanks in advance...

The desktop should only allow map editors to upload a map and supply map information. I was wondering if it's possible for the desktop application (made from regular java) to generate a midlet (made from Java ME?) so that the generated jar/jad file could be run on mobile phones.
What I'm trying to do is like this project: http://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/pubs/ug/2005/co600/mobimap/Technical%20Report.pdf
except that users can choose which map to run on their phones from maps that other users uploaded on the desktop.

    Goedemiddag,

  • Mobile maps help needed!

I'm trying to design and develop an application which uses Location Based Services and basicaly shows an interactive map of the current location.
I would like to ask if anyone knows where to start, I know more or less how to use JSR-179. Let's say I have current coordinates and then I want to display the map, the point is I would like to know which way to go from here.
The Google Maps API is fairly easy if you use Java Script and a web browser, does anyone know how to get the map from google or maybe yahoo and display it in the midlet without the browser?
There is a midlet available straight from google (mobile goolge maps http://www.google.com/gmm ) which is just great, I have no idea how it is implemented, If anyone knows, please send me some suggestions.
I would like to accompish all the processing of the retrived images(possible from the google maps server) with Java EE and then retrive them and display them on the mobile (maybe as an XML file - SVGt image). Anyway, I hope I have described the idea, as I said I don't know where to go, and if there is someone with some experience with that kind of staff please help, this is my final year project and I'm not asking for the solution, just for some directions and the proper way of implementing those things.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

You can use the Yahoo Maps API. It has a REST interface.
    http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/rest/V1/mapImage.html
You can parse response and download the image.
Alternatively you can use a server as an intermediary. For example, you can send your server the coords and options, then your server would talk to Google or Yahoo and retrieve the map image.
I created an example app some time ago that will use the Yahoo Maps image. The project page is http://gallery.yahoo.com/apps/10685 and the source code is available on http://hostj2me.com/appdetails.html?id=2875
It takes up to minute to initialize and retrieve the initial coords. But here is how it works.
    1) get GPS coods
    2) send cords (http get) to Yahoo
    3) parse XML response and retrieve image URL
    4) download and display image from URL

  • Mobile MAP applications (suggestions)

i am really in need of an application that will let me /mark/ a series of places and retain this data so that i know where this marked place is when i travel.
for instance i am taking a trip to paris and i would really like to put my "places to see" in a map that will let me access this while browsing something like google maps.
does this exist already? is there some site in particular that would be good to ask this?

  • Sygic Mobile Maps 10

    Hi all
My TomTom has malfuntioned recently and getting it repaired by them is proving a nightmare!
I have been wondering therefore about replacing it with my N900 and have been looking around for suitable software.
I have seen Sygic's version 10 software which looks quite popular.  In the list of compatible devices their website shows the n900 as "*n900"  What does the asterisk mean?
Is this software compatible or not?
Will I see any difference (apart from the size of the screen) by using this with my N900 as compared with my TomTom device?
I read that there may be problems about turn by turn navigation, keying in a destination from your existing location etc etc  Obviously I do not want to be online (either wifi or air provider network) - want to install a map and let the phone do the rest "offline".
Can someone please tell me if this software can do all that please - if in part, then which parts and whether there is anything better out there please?
    Cheers
    roz

it works perfectly without internet connection, in fact it doesn't need internet connection at all, all what you have to do is to download maps from the internte and than place them in your memory card .
guys give me your locations so i can report back with the maps .
Reality is wrong....dreams are for real... 2pac .
don't forget to hit that green kudos

  • Updating Sygic mobile maps

Sygic seems to be quite good navigator app for N900, but does anyone know how the maps can be updated? Can Sygic use Ovi maps or do I need to purchase new license from Sygic to update map data?

if you guys are having issues with nokia maps or you don't have it go in to 'settings', 'location' then scroll down and on my uk pgone it says 'supl.nokia.com' but it wasn't that accurate so just change it to 'supl.google.com' and then it'll be a lot better because its getting data from google and it should work anywhere in the world seen as google maps cover just about everything

  • New Indian Turn by Turn Voice Guidance Maps with o...

    Dear Friends,
MapmyIndia.com offers Sygic mobile maps (http://inav.mapmyindia.com/product/sygic/sygic_mobile_maps.html) claims to have intuitive design, easy to read as you drive, crystal-clear spoken voice instructions and route guidance with map coverage of 401 cities all over India. What is also claimed is MapmyIndia Sygic mobile maps, once installed, are stored on your phone/SD card. This means that you do not require a GPRS or data connection to get them working. What's more, there are no subscription or recurring charges. The one time cost is 55 US Dollars which would be a great saving as I often use the map while in Indian roads. This provides me a better option compared to Nokia Maps which I like but is expensive and Google Maps which doesnt yet come with turn by turn voice guidance for Sybian 5 platforms (only available in Android 2).
The customer care of MapmyIndia mentioned that it is totally compatible with my new Nokia N97. However, I would like to find out if any of you have used this service and if it affects the performance of the phone (speed, memory, crashing etc) in any way. How does Nokia looks at such third party alternatives?
Many thanks for your help and for sharing your experience.

Dear cjlim, Thanks for the input. Well, in terms of updated maps, the google can't be matched. However, Nokia map updates do not necessarily cover all the rapid changes thats taking place all over India. As per your suggestion I had a chat with the customer service rep of mapmyIndia and the response are as following which says the update is every six months and it could be downloaded free.

    Hi there,
So I assume it is a new out of the box device from your own Carrier , Right ?
Then from your Homescreen Options > Device > Application Management > scroll through and delete Google Maps if it is listed there ,then reboot your device by removing the battery while your device is Powered On , wait for a min. then re-insert it back.
Finally use your BlackBerry Browser and click here http://dl.google.com/dl/mobile/maps/BlackBerry-47/GoogleMaps.jad   it's a direct download .

  • Why did map apps downgrade after upgrading iOS 6?

I expect upgrading OS means every apps got improvement. But why did my google map downgrade into apple map? Does anyone know the reason?
    http://reviews.cnet.com/software/google-maps/4505-3513_7-35454676.html
    Google Maps review
The good: Map layers, turn-by-turn navigation, Street View, and offline access make Google Maps almost unbeatable.
The bad: No 3D city view.
The bottom line: With its impressive list of features and syncing of data across other devices, Google Maps is a must-have application for anyone running Android.
As far as mobile mapping goes, the newest version of Google Maps for Android offers one of the most robust experiences you can get. More than a simple piece of mapping software, this feature-fest offers turn-by-turn navigation, voice search, indoor mapping (select locations), public transportation information, Street View, and tons of other conveniences. Further, if you use Google Maps on your other devices while signed in to your Google account, your search history, Places, and custom maps sync seamlessly.
    (Credit: Screenshot by Jaymar Cabebe/CNET)
When viewing a location, Google Maps lets you activate a variety of add-on layers offering information like traffic, terrain, transit lines, satellite images, and bicycle routes, among others. There's even a Wikipedia layer that plots out entries related to your location, which is great for curious travelers. If you've made any custom maps on your Google account, you can overlay those as well.
If the add-on layers aren't enough, Google Maps lets you zoom into satellite photos to get a close look at buildings and street details. You can even activate street view to get a ground-level look at areas that have coverage. Unfortunately, though, the Google Maps app does not come with 3D flyover images baked in. To get these highly detailed images, you'll have to download it's sister app Google Earth. Hopefully at some point, these two titles merge to offer a more streamlined user experience.
One of the most important aspects of Google Maps for Android is directions. The app lets you easily conduct a search for a destination with text or voice, so you can get directions for driving, public transit, walking, or even biking. You can read your route in list form or hit the arrow icon to activate voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation. While traveling you can even fire up alternate routes if you happen to run into traffic.
    Google Maps for Android (pictures)

    Scroll LeftScroll Right
But Google Maps is a lot more than just a database of geographic information. The application offers other baked-in services like Offers for nearby deals, Local search powered by Google Places and Zagat, and Latitude for locating Google contacts on the map (with their permission, of course). These services in aggregate make for a complete mobile experience that is pretty hard to beat.
Google Maps for Android now lets you cache maps for access while offline. This is hugely useful for travelers who frequently find themselves in areas outside of their home mobile networks. The feature lets you pinch and drag to determine the area you want to cache, and it tells you how much memory the saved file will cost you.

Had it happen on my iphone 4 that I use as an ipod now and I did a complete restore and it fixed the problem. I did do the over the air update the first time and this time I did it by connecting to itunes.

  • Google Calendar maps and iPhone maps not working together anymore

For several months I was accessing google calendar through Safari. I was able to click on the map link and it would take me to the iPhone maps. About a week ago it started to take me to Google mobile map page, which is not integrated into anything on the iPhone maps such as that GPS thingy which is kind of useful. Anyone have any thoughts on how I can get this to go back?
I did the upgrade to 2.2 already and no changes.

I agree. I posted about this about a month ago and the only answer I got was that perhaps it was the way which google was choosing to handle the functionality. I think the feature where you can click on an address in your Google Calendar (and it should work on your Iphone Calendar as well), and it comes up in the Iphone Maps application, is completely necessary, as the map in safari is basically worthless. I had previously bragged about this feature, and now it's gone?! BRING IT BACK!
