Modbus IO with multiple ethernet ports?

Dear LabView experts:
My Labview system needs to communicate with three Modbus slave units (motor drive controllers with Modbus TCP/IP option installed) to send commands (speed reference) and read drive status (actual speed, output voltage/current/power etc). The PC has a quad-port Ethernet adapter with three of the ports connected via standard Ethernet cable to the three controllers. The three Ethernet ports on the PC have been given static IP addresses (192.168.1.10, 192.168.1.11, 192.168.1.12). The three controllers have been configured to give the Modbus slave options static IP addresses as well (192.168.1.20, 192.168.1.21, 192.168.1.22). I have also downloaded the NI Modbus library (version 1.2) and would like to use its VIs to perform Modbus Master Query operations. To do this, it is first necessary to open TCP connections to the three slave units using the TCP Open Connection vi, and this is where my problem comes in. How do I bind TCP Open Connection to use a specific Ethernet port (one of the first three IP addresses) on the PC ? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for your response. I should have browsed this forum a little more before sending the message out. You are right; one way is to restrict each Modbus-dedicated Ethernet port on the PC to a range or even a single port number (using Advanced settings), and use that port number in the TCP Open Connection vi to ensure that this connection will go out of that port. The other way is to use subnet masks as pointed out more than once on this forum; instead of using a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for all three ports (which would put them all on the same subnet), I could use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.192 which would allow for four separate subnets, then give the three PC ports IP addresses in the range 192.168.1.(2-62), 192.168.1.(66-126), 192.168.1.(130-190), with gateways set to 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.65 and 192.168.1.129. The Modbus slave units (motor drive controllers) would then have to be configured with static IP addresses in the respective subnet ranges, so that a TCP Open Connection to that IP address would automatically go out on that subnet.

If an access swich/switch port failed then AP still forward traffic through other switch once power restored through other port.
when PoE failed on its connected switch, it may still work via other port.
Having two ethernet port on AP may require to talk to different switches/stack to achieve AP port redundancy through lag or stateful switch over when cable/switch/AP port failure.
if one physical port become bad on AP, it can be still used with other.
(However, AP/physical port failure can be takencare at RF level using self healing.)

I have bought a TC to extend the range of the wireless network in the house and would like someone to explain the best way to do this? My combine router/modem is supplied by Movistar(in Spain) model Xavi 7958 router ADSL with four ethernet ports.

You cannot wireless bridge Apple to non-apple router.. so that is out.
The only way you can do this is run ethernet or EOP adapters.. and place the TC in a location where the other apple idevices can reach it.
If you want to repeat wireless with apple routers you have to use another apple router next to the modem.. plugged in an running as an AP.
Basically the TC is the wrong piece of equipment unless you want Time Machine backups.. take it back and buy a universal repeater.. not apple. Or buy more apple stuff like an extreme or express.. one apple router is useless to you without running ethernet.

Looking for an Access Point with 2 Ethernet ports and powered via PoE

Hi Gurus,
I am looking for an Access Point with 2 Ethernet ports and the access point can be powered via PoE. I have been assigned with a requirement where the rooms need to have access point as well as an Ethernet Cable provided from the Access Point as a backup for connectivity.
The room only has one data cable coming from the main IT room as well does not have a spare power socket to power the Access Point. Will be good if it can be centrally controlled or controller based.
Any recommendations?

For the backup plan, the cheapest solution may be to just run a couple new cat5e drops to the room(est cost $250). If not then purchase a small Cisco POE switch for the room(est cost $2k). For wireless I would purchase a POE enabled Cisco AP. But you will need to verify the POE switch/blade you will be connecting the AP to can power the AP you buy. I got burned by that issue when we purchased some Cisco 1251 AP's with dual radios and they needed more power than our 4500 POE blades could handle. We were told we would need to purchase new 48 port 10/100/1000 blades or power injectors. Our Cisco sales vendor took the heat for that mistake.

Problem with two ethernet ports?

There is little consistency to this, but I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar problem. I upgraded to 10.6 on my Mac Pro. I have two ethernet connections which run concurrently in my network setup - one internally addressed, using a manual IP with DHCP, the other an external address with a static IP. On an inconsistent basis, opening pages in Safari will result in failures because I am apparently not connected to the internet, despite the fact that I am - Mail continues to work fine, server connections remain, etc., etc. The only way to get Safari to work again is to disable one of the ethernet ports. Reenabling it after I have successfully made a Safari connection does not then break the connection again - it keeps running for quite a while. The problem seems to become more apparent when I open a selected group of links into tabs - some will be successful, most will fail. Ideas?

Port ONE was set to auto DNS. I did exactly as you suggested, I even tried a to do a manual ip address, etc but no luck. What finally worked is, I moved the port one cable to port two (which was empty) and bingo it worked.
It seems that snow leopard may have some issues with dual ethernet port machines, but why port two worked and port one didn't is beyond me. I will try to reverse it back to port one and see what happens. Fortunately I don't need two port at this point.

HP Color LaserJet 3600(not 3600n) with Fast Ethernet port - can I use it?

Hello! There is a HP Color LaserJet 3600 in our company connected via USB with XP-based PC. Recently I decided that we need this printer be shared directly trough our ethernet network, so I started to learn manuals - its own manual, Jet Direct, and all that stuff. The printer's manual says that HP Color Laserjet 3600 does not have neither its own ethernet port, nor support for embedded print-server like JetDirect 620n.
But!
Visual check shows that this HP 3600 DOES have its own ethernet port and if I connect it to network or at least to a notebook - it blinks like any other ethernet port with "lights" should do.
However.
Neither front panel, nor back panel says anything about network support(like letter "n" in model name).
Configuration page print also does not know about that mysterious port.
So my questions are:
1. What is this port actually?
2. Can I use it to share printer over network? Maybe, there is a way to upload 3600n's firmware somehow?

The product you have seems to be a commercial printer. For the best chance at finding a solution I would suggest posting in the forum for HP Business Support!

Single Nexus 5548UP- FCoE configuration with multiple server ports

Here is some background information. We have a SINGLE Nexus 5548 UP switch to which we are connecting both the storage and the UCS C240 M3 servers (with CNA). Both the storage and server has 2 ports each going to this nexus switch.

Fixed the issue. "switchport trunk native vlan 6" was causing the issue. Maybe the storage and Servers were not configured with proper VLAN's. I removed the native vlan and everything logged in fine.
Any how I have configured a single zone with all 3 servers pWWN's. I know single initiator zoning is the way to go.
Can you please guide me if I can move these servers in their separate zones without any outages? If it helps, all severs have 2 pWWN's. The current zoneset is active with that single zone.

AEBS 802-11N with fast ethernet ports?

One year (januari 2007) ago I bought the new model of the AEBS 802-11N. I always thought it had 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports. Just now when trying to install the new 7.3.1 firmware, I only can install the Fast Ethernet firmware. It seems that the AEBS only has Fast Ethernet ports instead of Gigabit ports.
Who can confirm that the AEBS (release jan. 2007) has only Fast Ethernet ports?

Yes that is true.
The Gigabit version was released in August 2007.

Using modbus/TCP with USB ethernet adapters

I have a test stand where I have a handful of USB instruments and a single modbus/TCP slave. I'm considering adding a USB ethernet adapter to the stand so that there is a single USB cable connecting the computer to the hardware rather than both a USB and an ethernet connection. Does anybody out there have experience (good or bad) using USB ethernet adapters with modbus/TCP slaves?
The existing USB instruments all use ASCII/SCPI-style command sets. The Modbus/TCP slave is an Automation Direct EBC-100. Nothing high-bandwidth or low-latency. Basically, the computer issues no more than a handful or command or request (ether SCPI or Modbus/TCP) per minute.

The test software is written in LabVIEW, and the test stand uses M-Series cards for data acquisition.

Single virtual channel with multiple digital ports

Hi all,
I have created a program that creates a task to read continuously from 3 digital port lines from the same device (PXI-6133). I am trying to figure out how I can retrieve the data from each port line to put into a waveform graph. Currently, I am using the DAQmx Read instance with "1 Channel N Samples" but I get a waveform with all values at the same time or a waveform graph with all three lines transposed.
I am using Windows XP and LabVIEW 8.6.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately thats not quite I am looking for. I am sending the DAQmx task the 3 port lines that I want therefore as I have read it bundles them all into one channel by default. What I want to do is take that one channel and parse out the data of each of the 3 port lines to create 3 new waveforms to work with individually.
After fumbling around a little bit, I was able to sort of get what I wanted. I've attached a screen shot of that portion of the program. The red circle in the bottom right hand corner is how I want to end up. I only did it for one of the pieces of data just to try it out and the conversion to string is just for me to print out what I'm working with. Unfortunately, when I look at the waveform it seems like maybe some extra 0's are being thrown in because its not the same graph that appears from the beginning (when all 3 pieces of data are transposed on each other). Let me know what you think.

Serversetup -sethostname with two ethernet ports

I have added a 4 port gigabit card with link aggregate to the headnode of our cluster. I have set up this aggregate port on a second subnet (192.168.2.1). I have the nodes resolving to my head node through their second port to this gigabit card. I can ssh into either port now on any given node (e.g., en0 and en1).
For each node, I have the hostname for the first port (en0) set as nodexx.cluster.private and for the second port (en1), which I've just added, pnodexx.cluster.private. When I ssh into the node via en0 I get the prompt:
node02:~ admin$
When I ssh to the node via en1, I get the prompt:
node02:~ admin$
But I would expect to get:
pnode02:~ admin$
I was going to ssh into the node through en1 and do a serversetup -sethostname pnode02 but I'm afraid this will reset the hostname for en0, which I do not want to screw with.
Will this work as expected if I do the serversetup -sethostname?

Your machine will only have one hostname, regardless of the number of interfaces it has. If you try to change the hostname to pnode2, that's what it will be.

Multiple ethernet addresses vs. IP addresses

Hi,
Using Workgroup Manager on SLS 10.6.4, I have successfully mapped hosts and their MAC addresses to fixed IP addresses within our LAN. All is well, until someone works on the back of one of the Mac Pros and ends up plugging the ethernet cable into jack #2 instead of #1. Now the MAC address is unintentionally different.
I suppose I could make a secondary set of hostnames for ethernet2, but that seems ugly and if you're depending on host foobar being available for a particular printer, but it's now foobar2, that seems unpredictable.
How do you deal with this? I assume this is in the same realm as having a laptop that connects via wireless one day but via an ethernet cable the next day? It's the same host, just not the same MAC address. Does WGM have a way to deal with multiple ethernet addresses?

ahh, i see.
you're running up against a few limitations here.
bootpd uses MACs to define static mappings.
OD uses MACs to identify nodes/clients.
your client machines have multiple MACs and may present one or the other on the network, depending on whether someone plugs in the wrong port.
here are some options/workarounds off the top of my head:
1. disable the second interface. if you need it for some reason, you'll have to deal with this situation another way.
2. bond the two interfaces. the downside is that you'll need to have both plugged in for optimal results, but you'll have one MAC, i believe.
3. use another dhcp server configured to deny all dhcp requests except those from your approved MACs (en1, let's say).
4. use local MCX and not deal with changing MACs at all. this is a little more difficult to manage, however.
5. manage prefs in some other way, like with puppet or casper, that don't strictly depend on MACs.
i'm sure there are other ways to deal with this situation, but if you're managing these systems, i'd probably just disable the second interfaces. people will learn quickly when they can't access the network. determine if this is more of a technological or a policy/personnel management issue.

How to connect my stack to my wireless access router(with hard connection ports)

Ok, here is the story. I have my cisco stack of routers and switches in my living room and my fiancee is getting on my case to move it. I can not go downstairs since she keeps the temp in the house at 58 degrees upstairs so I want a way to connect my stack to the access router network so I can access my stack from anywhere in the house. I have a 3640 with a 32 port async module in it for my access server to connect to the other devices. The devices are a 2 3550 24 port switches, a 48 port 3750 with poe, a 24 port 3560, and a 2950g 24 port switch. For the routers I have the 3640 for the access server, a 3745, 3725, 3825, 2620xm and 2 1841 ISR Routers. I believe I need to connect it to the hard ethernet port with another ethernet port on one of the routers but which one and whether it has to be a router or if a switch port would work if it was trunking. I would appreciate any documentation or actual help if possible asap so I can not get yelled at when I am training.
