Modifying alternate text for links / changing tags?

I found this page:

But I don't quite understand it. I have links in my document that I need to be accessible. The above-referenced page talks about modifying the tags tree. Is that what I can see when I click on Show Order Panel in the TouchUp Reading Order window?
If so, it just looks like a big scary mess to me. There are so many tags I don't know where to start (this is a software manual so there are sometimes 20+ tags per page). If that isn't what I'm supposed to be editing, what is?
I would really appreciate it if someone could explain to me, in simple terms, exactly what to do. When I go into the Tags section of the Show Order Panel the items marked <link> don't have any indication of what they are or where they go, so I don't know which link I am editing!

First, there really is no alt attribute for an <a> tag.
It's intended to be
used for <img> tags only.
Second, IE is the only browser that routinely displays the
alt attribute.
Other browsers will only display it when the browser has been
set to not
download images. It's a way of identifying the image when you
are not
displaying the graphics.
Third, all tags can have a title attribute, e.g., <a
href="..." title="For a
really good time, click here"...., and all browsers will
display it.
Fourth, there is currently no way to enter this without going
into the code.

Alternate Text in a Figure Tag

Is there a control, option, or preference that can be toggled on or off for when the alternate text in a figure tag shows when the cursor is hovering over an image in a tagged pdf? I am trying to get it so that the alternate text does NOT show when the cursor is hovering over an image. I also noticed that this happens over some images yet not others. Is there a preference for this?

Thanks! Because of this advice I used Acrobat to delete every one of the drawing objets that Word had inserted, then tagged, and pasted back the drawings from another copy of the original file. Everything worked except two of the arrows are missing the triangles to indicate direction, and the image that I wanted to add Alt-text to is now tagged as Figure not ClipSpan. The options for the detailed description I wanted to add are not available for Figure. However, it is not worth the extra effort for me to try anything else now.
If anyone wants to dig into this deeper I'll tell you that: (1) it is not the original (multi-colour) image that seems to be causing the problem but rather the simple line drawings from Word; (2) When selecting objects in a region with Acrobat I saw a few very small rectangles that didn't seem to have any content. I guess that Word is somehow putting very large mostly empty graphics on a layer above the text and that Acrobat tagging is changing the background colour of those graphics to the background colour. But as I know almost nothing about Word and little about Acrobar it is only a guess.

I wouldn't swear to this, but I think what's happening is the effect is essentially treated as a separate image during export, but as far as I know you have no way to select it to add the alt text or anything else. I don't really do this kind of work, so I could be way off base here.
A newer version of ID might behave better, so you may want to consider downloading the trial for CS4

Text for link disappears

Hi,
Strange one that I haven't come across before, I changed
ordinary text to a hyperlink in a flash movie that I'm creating and
when I export the text does not appear, If I take the hyperlink off
then I am able to see the text again

Modifying hyperlink text for enlarged photo

I've created pages using photo template. Some of the jpegs (unenlarged photos) have text descriptions with hyperlinks, which I've highlighted using red text. The photos enlarge without the highlight, and I cannot seem to make the modification. Any solutions?

Are you displaying the document in Acrobat, a browser, or some form of assistive technology? Alt text is used by assistive technology. For example a screen reader will speak the alt text instead of whatever it is set as an alternative to. It isn't mouseover text. To the best of my knowledge Acrobat provides no easy way of setting mouseover text when the document is viewed in Acrobat or a web browser - someone please correct me if there is a way to do this.

ExtendScript example for Frame - changing tags by table column

In the excellent book Unstructured Framemaker 11, there is Chapter 25 on using Extendscript, the only place I have seen
a cogent, coherent walkthrough of the history behind ExtendScript for Frame (evolving form the FDK) and an example showing good
design principles. The example shows how, starting from the small to the large tasks, select a cell, filter it for a criteria, and highlight the
cell, make these functions, then wrap these in functions that select all the tables of a specific name, then go through a document, etc.
I would like to learn more about Extendscript, I'm going through the Scripting Guide, but the key is the tweak for finding a specific column,
changing the tag for the heading cell of the column to a specified format, then changing the remaining "normal" cells of the column to a specified format.
That is the trick, since the heading cell needs have the option to be a different format, since the tag_name would help identify the rest of cells in the
column.
I'll come up with the main parts of the program, but it's the getting the specified column and specifying the heading cell and then the remaining
cells is the tricky part.

OK, starting at the lowest level is getting the column selected, since we need to select the correct column
before selecting the first cell in the column to rename (a separate funciton?) and then the remaining cells
in the column (another function)? Once these two functions are done, the rest would be like the example in the
the Frame book, since then you would have a function select only the tables that have a certain name and then
all the files in the book.

Modifying web.xml for a custom tag

Hello all, I'm trying to create a custom tag, and I'm having trouble trying to understand some elements of web.xml. Can someone tell me in detail what <taglib-uri> is? I know <taglib-location> is the directory where the .tld file is stored.
Also, is there anywhere online where I could find out more about the different compinents of web.xml? (I can't find any good websites).

</taglib>That means that your tag libaray definition is located at /root/mytags.tld. Some people put them in the WEB-INF, which would make it /root/WEB-INF/mytags.tld.
The taglib-uri is how you are going to reference it in your JSP. With the above setup, here is how you would reference in your JSP
<%@ taglib uri="/mytags" prefix="myTagPrefix" %>
<myTagPrefix:mySpecialTag/>

I would like to use the information in the metadata, specifically the Description field and use it as the Alternate Text for the images within a PDF.
Is there a way to do this? or a script I can write to accomplish this task?

How do you set up so that you can view the alternate text on an image when you hover over it like you do in IE?

Using Mozilla at present the alternate text for an image does not pop up when you hover your mouse over the image. This is what occurs in Internet Explorer. In Mozilla Firefox you have to right click, choose Properties and then you can view the alternate text. Is there a way to set up the mouse hover? Or is there a keyboard shortcut to at least view the Properties information of an image on a webpage quicker?

The Alt attribute isn't meant to show as a tooltip on hover.
The Alt attribute is meant to show if the image isn't or can't be displayed.
The title attribute is meant to show if you hover an image or link.

Acrobat X Pro: Accessibility Report says No Alt Text for image but there is

I have added the alternate text for images on my pdf but the accessibility report is still giving me errors stating that there is no alternate text. Does anyone have any idea why? I have checked and the alt text is there. I don't understand this.

I assume when you click on the error it is taking you to the location where the error is. Not seeing the document it is hard to tell... do you have a multi-page document and when you click on the error does it take you to the location where that problem is?
There are several things that could cause this problem. The Figure or other tag that contains the alt text must have content. It cannot be an empty tag.
It also cannot have another Tag inside of it containing the content. There must be some actual content directly within the Tag with the alt text, not nested inside another Tag, if that makes any sense.
Or, there may be another Figure Tag that has no content. That, too, will generate an error.
If neither of those suggestions work, if you post the file I can probably find the problem.

Adding replacement text for acronyms using the SDK

I have an existing C++ plugin for Acrobat Pro that walks through documents page by page doing different things (e.g. changing annotations) on each page.
As part of an effort to make out PDF files "accessible" I have an issue.
One of things that I have been asked to do is to look at creating PDF "replacement text" for a list of acronyms as they occur in a document. I believe the optimal outcome would be to somehow make the acronyms as "marked-content" and created "replacement text" for the marked-content (The marked-content being an acronym).
I have been looking at the core API, PDFEdit, and PDSEdit. It looks like PDFEdit would be the set of tools that might be able to do this, but I don't think it will. It doesn't seem like there is a way to "mark content" using PDFEdit. If I was able to cerate the correct marked content, it looks like the there isn't a way to add "replacement text" for that marked content.
We are creating structured PDF files, so I looked at PDSEdit. It appears that it pretty easy to created alternate text for an element. However, the elements are usually entire paragraphs so I would have to create "alternate text" for the entire paragraph just to have replacement for an acronym in the paragraph.
Playing with the "content streams" is something new to me, so I am wondering if it looks like I have considered all of the options?

Looking at PDSEdit, it appears that I have to create replacement text for entire element. Our elements are entire paragraphs for the most part. I was thinking that I couldn't just provide replacement text for a single word in the paragraph and I would have to provide replacement text for the entire paragraph since there is only 1 replacement text per element.
Maybe I didn't think about this enough (I shouldn't be allowed to talk out loud on Fridays). If I could split an existing element into 3 elements (before acronym, acronym, after acronym), I could avoid building replacement text for the entire paragraph. Or maybe I can created marked content with PDSEdit as a separate structure element? Not sure I can do that.
Do you think I can do what I want to do with PDSEdit?
I guess I am struggling a little to understand how the content streams relate to the items in the basic PDF structure (e.g. replacement text for marked content) and the document structure.

Changing Text for Add to Favorites Link

Does anyone know how we can change the label for the Add to Favorites link that is displayed on the page details icon?
We've searched all over assuming it is in a properties file somewhere but we have not been able to find it.

I have few queries:
1) Changing this will update all the iView/page toolbars of portal..right?
2) Can we include some more property in the Options of the iView toolbar such as a "mailto" link or something as "Feedback" which wil open up the Mail Client.
Or something else, basically any new link with some functionality associated?
3)I did the same kind of modification of changing the properties files on the appintegrator PAR file where it shows the message of "No Usermapping done.." if you havent done the UserMapping for a System and then trying to access the iView based on appintegrator...uptill here.its OK..i can modify the text to display my custom Text. But my req. is that can i display formatted Text here?
Such as a messge in 2 lines or some bold word etc. If i press enter in the message,it still appears in a single line and with \n\t...\n\t also gets displayed
