Monitoring Linux server with server stats
Hi,
I am planning to test our new application which will be hosted on Linux servers. When running my performance tests, I want to monitor the key metrics on these servers. I'm thinking CPU, Disk Space and Memory Available as a starting point. Can someone help me with how to monitor the Linux servers, and if these are the right metrics, as well as additional metrics that would be appropriate to monitor during tests?
Jack,
one way of monitoring your Linux system is to use the Virtual Agent monitors, they allow you to hockup to your linux/unix system via Telnet/SSH and to execute commands like for example vmstat to get metrics back during your testing.
CPU, Disk and Memory are good starting points as allready mentiond in this thread...in addition you may wana add counters that are more "specific" to the server type you are running like for example counters that are usefull when running a Web server or an Application server.
usefull counters might be:
Web server
*CPU Usage
*Memory Usage
*Hits/pages per second
*Web process system utilization
*Current connections
*Disk swapping
*Disk utilization
Application Server:
*CPU Usage
*Memory Usage
*Hits/pages per second
*Request queue
*Application Server process system utilization
*Queue wait time
*Disk swapping
*Disk utilization
hope that this helps

"empty file" error with CS5, linux server and mavericks
hello to the community,
i'm the owner of a small online marketing agency.
we have been using different macs here since 10.6. until mavericks with adobe CS 5 and a linux server for years.
today i got a new MBP retina with mavericks and since now i have the following problem:
- when i try to open a photoshop file on the server i get a "file is empty" error, when i open an illustrator file on the server illustrator crashes und when i open a pdf on the server with acrobat pro there comes a message that the file is corrupt. with acrobat reader i can open it.
- i can open the exact files with all apps when they are on a local storage not an the server
- i can open all files on the server with another mac with os x 10.6.
so there must be a problem with the combination cs5-files, server and os 10.9. it's weird because with my old MBP i with also using mavericks and there was no problem.
can anyone help me? it's really a problem!i found a workaround that seems to work!
instead of connecting to the server with "smb" i connect with "cifs". so i force mavericks to connect using the old smb 1 instead of the buggy smb 2. -
Airport Extreme configuration with Linux server gateway.
Hello all-
I am sorry if this is a repeat post.... I looked and could not find anything. I am trying to set up a linux server and have it act as a gateway between my Airport Extreme and my modem. I am wondering if there is a way to set a static IP on the airport extreme, or do I assign the address on the NIC in the linux box. The internal network will have OS X, Windows and Linux on it.
Also is there a flavor of linux that works better than others with Apple equipment?
Thank you for your patience and help!
Cheers!I am wondering if there is a way to set a static IP on the airport extreme
Yes, there is. You would do so using the AirPort Utility. (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Configure IPv4 = Manually) You can then enter the desired IP address information as required for your network configuration. -

Server Monitor - XServe G5 with OS X 10.4.10 client
Hello,
We run here multiple XServe G5. When purchased, they came with OS X Server 10.3.x
We have configured one of the servers with OS X 10.4.10 Client! because of some of the features of OS X 10.4.x. We are running newer versions of MySQL, PHP and Apache, as well as a third-party FTP server, and didn't want to be bothered with buying and extra license of OS X Server 10.4, now that 10.5 is around the corner. Anyhow...
The OS X 10.4 client does not implement the hardware monitoring System, Server Monitor. My understanding is that Server Monitor is a GUI front-end for hwmond and relies on 3 files:
/usr/sbin/hwmond (Hardware Monitor Daemon)
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.hwmond.plist
/System/Library/ServerSetup/SetupExtras/hwmondSetup
I have copied these files from another XServe G5 (this one running the real thing, i.e. OS X Server 10.4.10) to the respective locations on our XServe with OS X client. I have restarted the server, but things didn't work out.
What did I miss?
Thanks for anyone who can helpYou can still use iCloud eMail though, if that helps...
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
• Server name: imap.mail.me.com
• SSL Required: Yes
• Port: 993
• Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
• Password: Your iCloud password
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
• Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
• SSL Required: Yes
• Port: 587
• SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
• Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
• Password: Your iCloud password -

10.5.2 problems with SMB and Linux server
I'm encountering a problem with trying to copy files to a Linux server via SMB. When I copy a file to a Linux server (via SMB), it shows the file copying, but then the file disappears from the server when it is done copying. There is also something odd on the server side where it tries to rename everything to be in lower case.
I did not have this problem with Tiger, but I've noticed this issue on Leopard. I have tried several different machines, and all of the Leopard machines exhibit this problem.
I then tried copying the same exact file to a Windows server via SMB -- no problem.I tried an experiment. I duplicated a file (MyFile.zip) and renamed it to all lower-case: myfile.zip. I tried copying MyFile.zip to the server. It copied and then disappeared. I then tried copying the lower-case file myfile.zip, and it copied fine. It appears that this is an issue with how the server is trying to handle filenames and transform everything to lowercase.

Catalyst 4006 Network Teaming with Linux server
hi ,
i need to setup network teaming and do ethernahcneel between
Catalyst 4006 & Linux server
i want to ask ,
does catalyst 4006 support lacp ???
if dont support lacp , does pagp cant be work if the 2nd side is not a cisco device ?? in my case "linux server "
regards@CSCO12006413
Listen to ‘glen.grant’ – ‘pagp’ is propriety to Cisco devices, so your only option will be ‘lacp’.
However, my question to add to this post – would ‘CSCO12006413’ want to go with the MAC or IP Load-balancing methods? Question - If the destination address is the same, but source address different ‘CSCO12006413’ should use MAC based load-balancing; however, if this is for server-to-server configuration, I think you will want to use IP based load-balancing on the EtherChannel configuration?
Thanks

Hi from Germany. I used iweb 3.04 and OS X 10.6+ and everything worked fine on different websites, including German Umlaute ä, ö, ü, ß.
After upgrading to Lion all Umlaute are not correct spelled (strange letters) after ftp-upload on a linux-server (which is the same as before). Before upload these Umlaute are spelled correctly, but not after upload.
Trials were a) upload htaccess file b) use older iWeb 3.03 c) asking server administrator (answer: "use ae, oe, ue instead"), but nothing worked.
Any ideas or help?
Thank you very much, and excuse my english
PeterThe problem lies in the uploading of the files or the server itself. If the umlautes looked good on the server before then we have to think it's the uploading process. Try using the free FTP client Cyberduck to upload your site folder to your server. Then check to see if the rendering is correct.
What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand? -
I can't get Flashbuilder 4.6 to connect to remote Linux server on port 80
I'm using Flashbuilder 4.6 on a Mac (Snow Leopard). I have a new CentOS 6.2 Linux server with Apache webserver 2.2.21 on it, then installed GlassFish 3.1.1 application server on it, then installed mod_jk to connect Apache and Glassfish. Everything is installed on the same server. I verified that I can deploy an example war file (web application) in Glassfish and access it fine using either,
mydomain.com:8080/mywebapp (uses port 8080, which is direct connection to GlassFish)
mydomain.com/mywebapp (uses port 80, which enters Apache and passes through mod_jk to get to Glassfish)
This works well (no errors in any logs files).
Then I download BlazeDS from Adobe website, create a hello world application with it and deploy it in GlassFish. I next try to setup a new Flex Project in Flashbuilder 4.5. Using the wizard, I come to the section (under Server location) where I need to input a Root Folder and Root URL. Everything works fine when using a Root URL of http://mydomain.com:8080/mywebapp, meaning, I can click on the Validate Configuration button and Flashbuilder connects to the server.
But if I enter in the Root URL input field http://mydomain.com/mywebapp, then Flashbuilder cannot connect to the server. I need to eventually close port 8080, so I need this solution, which uses port 80, to work.
I made sure that the httpd.conf file VirtualHost section does include a `JkMount /mywebapp worker1` statement, and I can even look at the mod_jk.log file and see that Apache correctly opens a socket for mod_jk to communicate via AJP between Apache and GlassFish (with no errors or warnings) when the address `mydomain.com/mywebapp` appears on port 80. The GlassFish server.log file also shows no problems.
I'm stumped what to do next. Does anyone have experience connecting GlassFish, mod_jk, Apache, and Blazeds (or LCDS, should be similar)? If so, do you see any differences in my setup compared to yours? I'm only trying to use RemoteObject (not messaging, or streaming, etc.) with Java POJOs.Hi!
Thanks for the reply. No, my ISP isn't providing me with three IP addresses, just one static address. And the VDSL modem...not a router, but beyond that, don't know much about it. Do have a switching hub, however, a gigabit thing that so far is working great.
Managed, somehow, to get everything working, however. Really don't know what I did. But I can now take the MBP off the wire and connect to the other Macs without turning on Airpot on those machines. Next step now is to take the MBP to another location and try to establish a connection to the home network via Desktop Transporter or Vine. That's the Holy Grail that will allow me to sever the cords that keep me from straying too far from home during working hours. Love to sit at that coffee shop across the park and do my work from there! -
Getting error when trying to login to CR XI server on suse linux server
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Database/Reporting_/Crystal_Reports/Q_21747694.html
Hello,
I'm getting the above error when I try to login as administrator (blank password).
This did work until I rebooted the linux server.
I checked there are no port conflicts (nothing is using port 6400).
I restarted the services manually, I even rebooted server and then restarted ccm services manually but no luck. I did find this is a known problem with linux crystal reports server but nothing stated about how to resolve it.
Finding solutions in the SAP portal is difficult! This is about as user friendly as the Cisco support website. Cisco portal is AWEFUL.
I'm in process of getting a support contract from SAP but it's taking a long time.
I have to state the support from SAP is a big step DOWN from the business objects support. We were able to call and speak to engineers in a few minutes.
With SAP support I was able to talk to some foreigner (asian or indian) to tell me that there is no phone support with SAP. This after being redirected at least 4 times between departments.
Wow! So what do the other business objects customers have to say about the SAP support?
I can't help but wonder about moving on to another solution for publishing reports.
A vendor who actually gives a damn about the customers.
Oskarthis worked until I rebooted the server.
I'm getting error showing it's trying to connect to a mysql database 'BOE115'.
This server does have a mysql db running on it, but that db has no instance of BOE115.
It also shows it's trying to connect as a user that isn't on the database.
Where can I see the script with user/password that is trying to run and connect to the mysql db?
Also, why didn't the install create the instance and user?
Why did this work until I rebooted?
There is no firewall on this server, that has been disabled.
Thank you,
Oskar -

Connection refused from Java in Windows to remote postgresql Linux server
I fail to connect from windows to a remote postgresql linux server. The SQLEexception received is same as the SQLException that happen to the localhost connection to postgresql where the condition of postgresql not started or not start with -i option to allow tcp/ip connection. The SQLException is SQLException: Connection refused. Check that the hostname and port are correct and that the postmaster is accepting TCP/IP connections.
Please help..
Java class file with the following codes:
String url = "jdbc:postgresql://servername:5432/databasename";

The /var/lib/pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf have the following configuration:

Also check your firewall settings. I also could not get localhost to work, I had to use the actual IP address of the machine, ie not 127.0.0.1. Use telnet hostip 5432 to check if you can get a connection. For my situation once telnet would connect, then JDBC started working too. Then localhost started working too.

How can I create a PDF directly from RH10?
It seems a bit absurd that the creators of PDF don't have any way to output a RH10 project directly to a PDF without using Word. Perhaps I'm missing something but I don't get why the resulting PDF ALWAYS has a screwed up TOC. It doesn't recognize the
