More on DPI, worth reading if you scan and stuff with stills

Even seasoned professionals can't agree on this topic. I'm taking these statements out of context from a listserve and I am posting them without attributing the quotes to real people except to say they are pros. They should know what they're talking about. Yet they don't. Neither do I anymore.
The first salvo:
The 72dpi thing is a myth. The number of pixels is the number of pixels.
72dpi is a print term. The size of the image determines the number of pixels
that will be in each inch of the print.<<<
The counterattack:
<div class="jive-quote">I wouldn't call it a myth, especially since this question specifically
relates to print resolution. DPI is a printer term, but it is also more or
less equivalent to PPI (dots vs. pixels). Pixels are the real resolution
and the "pi" part is merely how many of them you spread over an inch.
This info is metadata reference embedded into the graphic file, so if
you open an image exported from 1080i video as a graphic file, Photoshop
and most other graphics apps will ID this as 72 dpi. At this relationship,
1920x1080 will print an image that is 26.667 inches x 15 inches. If you change the dpi setting under image size, WITHOUT resampling the image, from 72 to 144, then the printable dimensions are cut in half to 13.33 x 7.5 inches. Obviously the smaller you make the image, the more pixels/dots are crammed into an inch.
More dots equals higher APPARENT resolution.
So, although not a true "absolute" value, dpi is still a valuable rule of thumb
for comparison. 1920x1080@72dpi would have less visible "quality" than
a theoretically native 1920x1080@300dpi (if that existed), when both are printedto fill an 8x10inch image area.
If, for instance, you wanted to have a 3D artist create CD cover art (approx 4in.x4in.)they would have to create/render a file that is 1200x1200 (or even biger yet).
Even if this opens in Photoshop as 72dpi, when you change this setting (without resampling) to 300 dpi, the image will correctly print at 4x4in. instead of 16.6x16.6 inches.<
The last rejoinder:
<div class="jive-quote">So, although not a true "absolute" value, dpi is still a valuable
rule of thumb
for comparison. 1920x1080@72dpi would have less visible "quality" than
a theoretically native 1920x1080@300dpi (if that existed), when
both are printed
to fill an 8x10inch image area.
Unfortunately that's not true. As mentioned earlier correctly: a
pixel is a pixel - though dpi is not a 'myth'.
A 1920x1080@72dpi and 1920x1080@300dpi do have a 1920x1080 absolute
count of pixels - so the same resolution/quality. If both of the
mentioned images will be printed out to an 8" wide picture the amount
of pixels available is 1920 (horizontally) in both cases - so no
quality difference, at least when using the same printer.
Changing the dpi will either scale the visual size depending on your
device or the printed size ( also depending on the printer's
capabilities/resolution). Printing the big wallpapers/advertisements
is actually done at around 45 dpi - while it's always a good idea to
have a multiple of the print resolution as source resolution, we
could say we take 90 dpi for a better quality. In the above example
the resulting image size will be around 21" width - in case we map
the available dots directly we'll get 42".
That's what dpi means, dots per inch. If you display/print 1920 at 72
dpi you will get a width of 1920 dots / (72 dots / inch) = 26.67
inch, if you display/print 1920 at 300 dpi you will get a width of
1920 dots / (300 dots / inch) = 6.4 inch. That's quite simple math,
and if you keep the unit types during the calculation, it will show
you whether the calculation is done correctly - dots / (dots / inch)
= dots x inch / dots = inch.
Talking about video and dpi might make sense when it comes to
(control/broadcast/LCD) monitors: so comparing a cheap 14" 320
horizontal lines consumer one to a 14" 800 line studio monitor would
make ~29 dpi versus ~72 dpi. Comparing the same 14" studio monitor to
a 20" 800 line one, will result in ~72 dpi versus 50 dpi. In any case
the source pixels from the image are mapped/interpolated to the
output device's resolution.
It's the same with timecode: if you got 150 pictures, you got 150
pictures and the won't get more or better if you let them run on 1
frame/second, 60 frames/second or 120 frames/second - only the time
it needs to display them does change. But recording with a high-speed
camera at 120 frames/second will give you a much higher motion
resolution than recording with 60 frames/second - and the double
amount of pictures.<
Wait, there is MORE:
<div class="jive-quote">I'm afraid you misread my explanation and qualifiers.
Note the "theoretically" and "if it existed" in:
"theoretically native 1920x1080@300dpi (if that existed)".
In Photoshop you can create both a 1920x1080@72
and a 1920x1080@300. As I explained, the dpi is merely a
metadata reference for the printer. What this value is set at
DOES change the SIZE at which an image is printed at, but
NOT the resolution. Since the same number of pixels squeezed
into less space APPEARS sharper to the eye, 1920 printed
in half the size will look like it has higher resolution than
if it is bigger (viewed at the same distance). In Photoshop,
the dpi value is really just a cross-reference between actual
pixels and the physical dimensions at which these should
be displayed.
The final installment:
We are saying the same thing really, but since the point of
this thread specifically relates to printing a still, the dpi
measurement as a point of reference is still valid. Basically,
what the client really wants to know is, 'at what point does
this printed image start to look unacceptable?' Of course,
that depends on the size at which it is to be printed and
the target medium (such as newspaper versus glossy paper).

The 'DPI Doesn't Matter' comments are generally directed at statements like: " I imported this 300dpi image into FCP and it's wonky. Why does it look like the dog chewed it?"
Yes, scanners measure resolution in DPI. So, to clear things up ... (yea ... right!), Below is the formula which describes the relationship between pixels, physical size (in inches) and DPI. This is an elaboration of Patrick's post.
physical size x DPI = pixel dimension
If you have a 10" wide image and scan it at 300 dpi you will have a 3000 pixel wide digital image. A pretty large image. But what if you want to end up with a 750 pixel wide image?
The equation is transformed into:
pixel dimension/physical size = DPI
so, continuing the previous example, you want a 750 pixel digital image and original media is 10" wide. 750/10 = 75. Set the scanner at 75dpi, verify the resulting file will have a pixel width of 750 and you are good to go.
Just to make things less clear - some more sophisticated scanning software (Silverfast Ai, for example) will also let you put in a multiplier (the Q factor) to the dpi setting which in essence is an oversampling ratio. Set that to 1.0 and your numbers will be as you set them.
Again this is simply to get the file into a pixel dimension that will work in FCP.

  • Scan and copy with MP240

ist it possible to use MP240 multifunction Device only for scan and copy without cartridges to be inside? how can i turn the error and warning messages and use only scanner ?

    Hello M4n0u,
Both ink cartridges will need to be in the printer in order for the printer to scan, copy, or print, even if the ink cartridges are low or out of ink.  If both ink cartridges are installed, you can press and hold down the STOP/RESET button on the unit for at least 5 seconds, then release it to disable the ink level detection function of the printer and be able to scan until you are able to replace the ink cartridges.  Hope this helps!

  • Are you disappointed and frustrated with the Note 3? I feel the pain!

I feel everyone's pain with the Note 3 Issues!  I have been in the tech field for 20 years and Verizon treats me as if it is the first time they are hearing about the issues! Rather that work on a fix, I've been told that I can leave my contract with no penalties!
I have documentation and screen shots of all my issues and here is the short list of what I've been through....
    1. 80 + hours on the phones with a support team that close tickets without resolution, transfers you around the country to different call centers to start all over again,
    2. 3 emails to Verizon Executive Office
    3. A refurbished phone replacement of my brank NEW Note 3 that I was told would definitely fix the issues..
    4. 4 Visits to Verizon stores, 2 Simm Card replacements, 2 Network Extenders, replacement charger cord and new battery
    5. Conference calls with Samsung
    6. Been offered a less expensive phone replacement for "free" ... yeah Verizon trade my Mercedes priced phone for a Neon...
    7. Calls not returned by support agents
    8. Text messages from technicians initiated by Verizon to me, from their work domain, never responded after multiple conversations with screen shots sent showing my issue
    My issues:
    1. Network signal drops constantly in my home. No mobile network errors, dropped calls, hanging texts, 1x signals. I am told by one group that I am in a 4g covered area and the other group that I am in a weak coverage area! My other Verizon phone has 4g yet support can't understand my logic that it is a phone issue!
    2. Slow charging messages to use the original charger with my screen shot plugged into the brand new SAMSUNG charger
    3. Battery usage of 10% per hour when my phone would last all day before the KitKat update and still have almost 70% remaining
    4. Overnight battery drainage in 7 hours from 91% to 27% while OFF..no wifi on and no Bluetooth on
    5. PIctures in my Gallery, that I can see and get file information for that are NOT there in the SD folder identified,  and then mysterious disappear forever
All since the mandatory software update that you can not refuse, delete or revert back to factory version!
So now they are going to bring the Note 4 into the mix with KitKat 4.4.4 before they update and fix the software for the owners of the Note 3...
So what do I do?  Switch to the Note 4 or wait or wait months with TERRIBLE service while Verizon tries to fix a bad update?    By the time that happens Lollipop with be out!
This is so frustrating... the big 3 point the fingers around rather than collaborate..
Google makes the base Android Software update for a hardware device manufactured by Samsung that is sold by and placed on a Verizon Network. Verizon tweaks the software for "their" business. Verizon sends refurbished phones while under factory 1 year Warranty and sends devices . Samsung says everything leaves their business working properly but I can send my phone to them and be without my phone for 10 days while they "properly" flash the device for free.  They tell me  Verizon does not flash the device the same way and their way is "better". Who do I trust?  And be without my phone for 10 days because Samsung "rigorously" tests everything???
And to top it all off... I wrote to Samsung's "Voice of the Customer" which is supposedly and direct complaint to the Executive Level. I wrote 3 times and 3 weeks later still no contact from Samsung. They should call it the "Voice into the Abyss!"
I'm sooooooooooo disappointed with my experience this year....

gooeysgran, we don't want this to be an ongoing issue for you. Have you powered your device off/on since retrieving that software update? Have you tried removing that Wi-Fi connection in the settings of your device?

  • HEY MSI. READ THIS (regarding ICH5R and compatibility with WD Raptors)

The following issue has not been resolved.  Seems like several people have given up and are just using the onboard Promise controller.
Thread on issues regarding WD Raptors configured in RAID via ICH5R
Does it not suprise you that nobody is using Raptors on the ICH5R?? hmmm?? (Maybe because they can't.)
I have requested RMA service with Western Digital to try different hard drives. Now I am on my 2nd RMA.  If it does not work (even with both drives using the B5P bridgechip) then IT IS CLEAR THAT YOUR MOTHERBOARD WAS MANUFACTURED WITH A DEFECT.  And thus people using this board who want to use RAID with 2 Raptor drives on the ICH5R should be entitled to a replacement board or even their money back.  I AM NOT JOKING.  I think it's something quite serious because the need and demand from users are being neglected and it seems as though MSI won't bother trying to resolve this issue and hopes to silence this issue by ignoring it.
Mods... please do not delete or lock this thread.  And people who are still in the same boat as I am and are just about to give up or have done so already... please let your voices be heard here!
When I get my 2nd replacement Raptor (hopefully it's a B5P) I will do further testing and let everyone know if it solves the issue.

Interestingly, I bought my raptors before I came across this thread, and found that I had problem of having my raptors being detected by the ICH5R.  At that time, I also have a HighPoint 1520 Raid PCI card on my mobo.
Guess what, after I removed the HighPoint 1520 Raid PCI card, I am able to have my raptors plug to the ICH5R connectors and being detected.  I'm running it at Raid 0 now, as my boot drive.
The two raptors' DCM is HBCAJAB, not sure if this information is useful.  Both drives were made in Malaysia.
The thread I am referring to https://forum-en.msi.com/addreply.php?threadid=43273&sid=.

    Hi!
Is it possible to scan several small notes, and make the printer print them out on two separate A4 papers? At the moment I can fit three notes on the A4 section of the printer, but if I could use the right side of the scanner too, I would save a lot of time. It's essential that the copies comes out on two separate A4s

Hi again, thank you for the information. I just want you to be aware that when you select the size of the photo's that it needs to be set not only just in the software that you are using but also in the printer setting's in the Control Panel. The path to take is as follows: Click on Start, Control panel ( please make sure that you have it set on Category view in the top right hand corner), Right click on your printer and select Printing Preferences, Click on the advanced option button on the bottom right corner, Then select the paper size drop down arrow and make sure the paper size matches the paper size in your software.
Hope this helps with the issue.

  • Adobe Reader DC has errors and crashes with Windows Server 2012 R2

We recently installed Adobe Reader DC version of Adobe on our Windows Server 2012 R2 servers and are having issues since the launch. Few of the issues we have seen are as follows:
This version is a bit clunky and hangs.
Has a lot of pop-up boxes that appears each time I open a document.
Each time I open a document there is a Welcome pop-up box
It is a bit slow to respond between clicks
If I click on any options like File. The application hangs and then crashes. (see attached crash message)
Any help to resolve this would be helpful.
    Thank you

I just had the same issue on a 2012 R2 Remote Desktop server. I fixed it by creating a registry key called Privileged under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC and then creating a DWORD value in that key called bProtectedMode and setting the value to 0. This was on a brand-new server that never had a previous version of any Adobe software on it.
This is a major kludge. Hopefully Adobe will fix it soon. By the way, here's the crash signature we were getting:

    This is MAGIC !!!
The 80-conductor cable was first defined with the original Ultra DMA modes 0, 1 and 2, covering transfer speeds up to 33.3 MB/s.
The cable is considered "optional" for those modes.
However, for any Ultra DMA modes above mode 2, the 80-conductor cable is mandatory.

I have personally used it with Word and it does work.  I even think I remember reading that you can use it with any program in which you can type.  Go to settings on your macbook to make sure it's turned on.  Chances are your shortcut to access dictation is pressing the Fn key twice.
