More tick tick tick

is the sound we get along with the beachball. It sounds like a hard drive going bad but happens even on the simplest things like moving an icon on the desktop, but does not happen not if the machine is on but idle. We get no other errors (reading or writing). File size and/or disk space are not a factor.
we do not have the original disks with this machine as it was purchased used. any suggestions?
I posted this same questions on the networking board, but couldn't figure out how to change it to this one so I apologize for the duplicate question.

Hi gsdesign, the tick is usually from a HD controller gone bad. If you can startup using your install DVD/Utilities/Disk Utility and repair the HD, and if it makes a reference to I/O failure or slow because of I/O problems, a bad HD is your answer. If Keys out of order, Disk Warrior will repair this problem, however, a ticking HD controller is an obvious drive failure. A second drive if the same capacity as a backup, e.g.; a Time Machine, or a second HD using Time Machine software, will prevent any down time in the future.

Really ticked off with BT wasting customer's time ...

It's the last bit of the post which I am even more ticked off about, today BT WASTED even more of my time for no reason.
Here's the background though, and the reason for asking (again) for my call back.
During last year our area (Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire) had had some significant problems and throughput was dire. This seems to have been put right during October and 6 Mb/s is now available to me (even though I am only about 500 yards from the exchange - still not what it should be is it, but it's acceptable.)
Whilst I was actually on the 'phone complaining of poor throughput during September (often less than 0.5 Mb/s) and asking when normal service could be restored I was actually disconnected from the BB service whilst there were engineers at the exchange. This had happened a few times and I expected reconnection within a few hours.
It didn't happen.
I was then told over the next three weeks the problem was mine (which I knew it wasn't), that it was my line, my equipment, my modem, my computer and anything else they could think up during many calls which lasted much longer than they should have.
I had been running diagnostics locally, had put on a brand new modem, changed the filter again (I have loads of new filters it saves dusting), used my laptop, brought in ALL my neighbours kit (including the hub) and excluded all of my equipment and faults potentially at "my end"
Still BT refused to take ownership of this problem and the disconnection problem continued until a level 2 called Devashish and his manager Abishek took ownership of the problem, listened and looked at the diagnostics and had the problem fixed within 10 minutes of calling. All credit and many thanks to them both, particularly Devashish.
I have logs of calls which total more than 20 hours talking to BT about this problem, diagnostics which were run over and over and over also taking many hours plus the time shifting kit from place to place in order to eliminate BT's accusations that the problems we at my end.
All completely unnecessary.
I subsequntly asked on four separate occasions for this matter to be addressed and each time I was told I would receive a call back - it hasn't happened.
Today, I contacted the complaints department on the live chat utility - I was on there for 45 minutes asking politely for the operator to contact the manager in question and get my call back. I did not want to go through the whole unnecessary saga again with a new BT person.
Here is the transcript with the operators name changed, her name is Melanie. I do not think I should embarrass her by putting in the full name. I have also changed my full name to reflect just Hilary the customer.
So - another 45 minutes+ of my life wasted on something this simple. Thank you BT (not)
Along with all the other customers with problems with BT that are not of their own making, I send a thumbs down and boo. It simply is not right, fair or ethical to do this to customers who have no other option but use BT.

I thought I'd post an update here, as a month has gone past since my original post.
Sean and I have become pen-pals, fallen in love and eloped with the children and the dog.
(Well we haven't in fact, but we have exchanged 25 emails and for folk without any other agenda apart from getting a call back people could well talk about us lol. This is the internet, after all....... )
To be honest most of those mails are just half liners from me saying "still no call" with a time stamp from me and Sean trying his best to raise someone, anyone, to get this matter dealt with.
Sean kindly accessed my file, found the person in question for call number 5 and he sent an email to them.
I finally did get a call (asking all over again about the throughput problems and no connection issues in September until late-ish October) on the 22nd last month from "a manager" who wasn't the original one and she's called Esther. I am not sure but I think Sean sent several emails about this for me to get me this call back number 5, which should have happened on the 3rd Last month.
Just in case anyone is wondering what happened with call-backs 1, 2, 3 and 4 promised from November until the date of me using the chat thing on the 3rd January - it's anyone's guess.
To get one or two baddies is acceptable I suppose, but am I now on 5 and it still hasn't happened. Or is this now number 6? It's all too confusing :-)

I wonder how many customers of BT broadband left in January. Can anyone get hold of the statistics?

BT are now advertising they don't "slow you down", but they do and they do it on purpose. I am receiving less maximum throughput/second now than I did in 2005. I used to get 8 mb/s all day and night and of course no limits then with AOL. My home hasn't moved any further from the exchange and now I have a stable service from BT since October, my max. throughput/sec doesn't get any better than 6.3 mb/s - I only went back to BT as a provider in January because of promises made to me about better throughput.
Me and the user group and the Thinkbroadband stats all know that 2012 wasn't exactly a record year for BT broadband stats locally. How many calls were made to BT for that year from the Pembroke exchange? Can anyone get hold of those stats?
I don't know what else to say except to thank Sean for all his efforts.

How to Control number of minorticks between two ticks of axis ?

I want draw number of minor ticks between two ticks of vertical axis of column chart based on user input.
ex:if user is providing 2 there should be two minor ticks between two ticks of axis.

From what I can tell with fooling around with it, the minorInterval value divides the vertical count to give the appropriate number of ticks between each interval.

In the example above, I have the interval at 10 and when I set the minorInterval to 2, then I get 5 ticks. The first tick is at the interval and then followed by 4 more ticks.
In your example, in order for me to see 2 ticks between the intervals, then I would have to set the minorInterval to 3.5 .
10 / 3.5 = 3 (2 ticks)
The forumla would have to be something like:
ViewableTicks = Interval / (Selected Ticks + 1);
So, if I created a droplist, with 1 - 9 ticks (because 0 doesn't work if you are showing minor ticks), then when the option is changed, I would calculate the value for the minor ticks and set the LinearAxis component (countAxis) to that new value.

Set decimal tick label for number axis

Hi everyone,
In my chart, the number axis tick label is always like float number. I need an decimal number tick label. Because I use auto-range on this axis, i think this
NumberAxis(double lowerBound, double upperBound, double tickUnit) is not good for me.
Also, I have try setTickLabelFormatter on FX example, but for me, it seems like useful for set prefix and suffix. Can someone give me solution for this problem

It convert all number object to integer. So if my chart has 4 tick label like: 1.0, 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75, it conver to 1, 1, 1 and 1. It not what I looking for. If axis has 3 value: 1,2 and 3, I just want it present only 3 tick labels, not expand more tick label like 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 ....

Ticking Sound & Some Whirring Too, at Start Up...

When I start up my 20" iMac, I hear it click (like a clock) 6 times, the HD whirrs, then it clicks 2 times, & hd whirrs, then 6 times & hd whirrs, finally one more tick sound, and it starts up.
What could be going on? I think I should be worried, am I right?

No computer should emit whirrs and clicks when it boots. Have you run the Apple Hardware Test?

Have you booted from your restore disk to check for errors? If not..
Shut down the iMac. Now, press the power button, hold down the C key, and insert the restore disk all at the same time. Keep holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo. An Installer window will open but DO NOT proceed with any installations, instead from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Disk Utility. In the DU window, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab and click: Verify If DU reports errors, click Repair. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar select Utilities/Startup Disk and select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
The above is not the same as check the S.M.A.R.T status of the drive.
And... you can try resetting the System Management Controller.

To get Gmail one has to click on "more" which gets one a dropdown menu which ends in "even more" Clicking on this takes one to a page headed "Even More Google Products", including (Hurrah!) M Gmail.
Click on this and one gets the page where one signs in, even though I have ticked the box entitled " Stay signed in" and at last ones's e-mail page turns up. Validate that one or more checkbox are ticked.

Currently I'm checking if the user has ticked at least one of the checkboxes by using:

Is there a way to count the number of checkboxes and do a loop. If you have 15 checkboxes the code above gets a bit hard to read.
I've also use the <validate nullTest="error"/> in the xml to flag the checkbox as being required but this is not true. As long as one or more checkboxes are select the user should not be alerted or shown that checkboxes are not selected. Is there a way to highlight the checkboxes?

This is what I would do.....
1. Set up a Global Variable under File>>Form Properties>>Variables Tab
     //Variable declared here are always considered string
     Example: GCheckCount and set the initial value 0
2. For each CheckBox I would add the following code under "change" event

I have added more songs to my library. Half of the library has selected ticks but when I click on any of the others to select them the whole song disappears from the list. Why and what can I do to fix?

If I understand correctly, it sounds like iTunes is not grouping the songs from a particular CD together. The cause could be something as minor as a misspelling or slight variations. For more information, see the following resource:

Another document series- do I need to tick Permit More than one doc type?

Im thinking of creating another document series for Goods Return and Credit Notes to be used only when they are created due to user errors in GRPO o AP Invoices.
In order to do this, Do I need to tick the option of "permit more than one doc type per series"?

If you select "permit more than one doc type per series", you must know the consequence. It may cause you more troubles when you want to distinguish the document types within the series.

You may have transferred all your songs, but your iPad is seeing the library as a different entity.

Dear Experts,
I am facing a very strange issue.
We have a PO with 10 line items all items are alike except line item 9/10 where unit of measure is EA (each) and for others it is D (days). (account assignment catagory as Project, in the account assignment WBS element, Commitment item, Funds center, Fund are maintained, and it is same for all line items),
All the items are ticked for del.complition. So apperantly these items should not appear as open commitments in Funds consumption report,
First Eights lines (which have unit of measure as D) are not appearing in Fund consumption report but the last two line items 9/10 (with unit as EA) are appearing as open commitment in Funds consumption report.
I just changed the unit of measure of line item 8/9 to D from EA and saved the PO. After this i run the Funds consumption report and to my surprise the line items 8/9 are not appearing as open commitments.
I am not getting how come Unit of measure is playing role in Funds consumption.
Can somebody help me understand.

This reply is more of a guess work than otherwise:
Commitment seems to be created with unit of measure as D, possibly because that is the base unit of measure. EA could be alternate unit of measure which is entered in the PO. When you set delivery completion indicator, commitment is removed to the extend of EA rates (reason note known - possibly due to corrections in PO subsequently from D to EA. You can check the PO change history in this regard)
To further understand the issue, you can verify the value of commitment with D & EA from table COOI by passing the object number with and without delivery completion indicator. Alternatively, you can use transaction RKACSHOW to see the changes in commitment with differing units of measure and with / without delivery completion indicator.
Please post the results after trying out.

Macbook not booting, faint ticking noise?

Hi there, I'm hoping you guys can give me a few pointers here. I have a mid 2007 black 13" Macbook that I have been having problems with. There have been two previous issues which may or may not be related.
Over the last three years, this Macbook has eaten through five HDD's. After finally getting fed up of this, I wondered if perhaps somehow I was to blame, maybe without realising I was putting it down on the desk a bit too hard or something, so when the most recent failure came, (approx six months ago) I bit the bullet and bought myself an SSD and all now seems to be well on the storage front.
Around the same time as the first HDD failure, came random shutdowns, without warning, what appeared to be complete power failures. I also noticed the X symbok in the battery indicator. These initially were fairly frequent but eventually subsided, along with the X symbol, but always seemed to rear up again, in times a heavy use, and were more often than not followed by HDD failure.
Now, the current issue is that yesterday, I started experiencing these power failures again, hoping to myself, I turned the machine back on. Upon logging in, the fan spun up to max, so, checking activity monitor, I found that spotlight indexing, was taking up 148%CPU and this seemed to be the cause of the shutdowns.
I left the machine to cool down for a few hours, booted it up, let spotlight finish indexing, and all was well for about 3 hours. Then came another shutdown.
This time, there was a reluctance to boot. The DVD drive made its usual noise, the sleep light glowed on, and then everything died. I tried again, same result, I tried a third time, and was greeted with the all to familiar, 'no boot media' icon (Folder with ?? flashing). Frustrated at the possible death of my SSD I turned the machine off and let it be.
Later on, I gave it one last try, hoping beyonnd hope, and lo and behold, it booted with no problem. When I logged in, I noticed the 'X' in the battery indicator once more, and spotlight started indexing again, fearing this would cause more shutdowns, I temporarily disabled indexing via terminal. All was well for a couple of hours, I turned my machine off, and went to bed.
I came down this morning, tried to turn on my Macbook, nothing. Tried again, still nothing. magsafe is plugged in w/ green light, battery shows full charge with or without magsafe plugged in, then I heard a faint ticking noise from the machine, on the logic board somewhere while the power button was pressed. it's somewhere around the 'W' on the keyboard. I have read that it could possibly be a shorted inductor on the logic board. Is there any chance it could be something a little more replaceable?
I'm hoping against hope here, as if it is the logic board, it may be time to retire the old beasty.

I was indeed looking into getting a mainboard for my old MacBook. I found a place where I was told, they will order it and replace it for me... the 'piece' never came to its destination ... after being almost 4months without computer, I decided to make the plunge and got a new one. After thinking, even if you found a 'reclaimed one' it may solve your problem just temporarly. If I were you, I would rather make a downpayment and get a financing on a new machine - you will be good to go for at least 6 or 7years again (with the new technology). Now, if you do not want to 'loose your money' you may wanna consider to resell your Device after a 1y1/2 or 2year, which permits you to get money back and stay 'in' the iDevices.
