Motion Behavior with Image Mask

I am having a hard time attempting to make an image move in Motion but not become visible until it passes through a certain location.  I tried searching but think I am just asking the wrong the questions.  I basically have an image that is going to slide open with a Motion Behavior but I only want part of the image visaible until it moved through a certain point.  Any suggestions or ideas would greatly be appreciated.

All objects are contained within a Group, even at the top level, including images.
Animate your image as you want (keyframe, Throw behavior, etc.).
Add an Image Mask to the Group level (select the group and type Command Shift M).
Draw a rectangle that will become a "viewport" for your image to "enter" into (preferably within the group with the image.)
Drag and drop the Rectangle layer (from the layer list) onto the Image Mask added to the group (the rectangle layer should become deactivated [unchecked] automatically; if not, uncheck it in the layers list.) [The Rectangle object must be Filled; whether or not you have it outlined is up to you.]
Play.

  • Combining a path motion tween with a mask

I have a mask layer that I have animated and underneath that
I have a motion tween of a symbol using a path motion guide. The
mask doesn't seem to work with those layers. Is that a restriction?
    If so BIG BIG BUMMER!!

create a black shape in your bottom-most layer.  above that layer create a while shape that covers you black shape.  above that layer create your oval and tween it.  finally right click the oval containing layer and click mask.  test.

  • Strange behavior with images from iPhone

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior or can replicate.
Take some pictures using an iPhone 3Gs (can't tell if it happens with other models).
Bring the images into iPhoto and then drag them out to regular folders.
    Choose Cmd/Ctrl-D to place.
The image, which is in Portrait orientation, comes into CS5 strangely.
The frame does not hug the correct orientation of the image. Instead it follows a landscape orientation as if the image was rotated 90 degrees.
When you let go from dragging the frame, the image appears vertical within the lanscape frame.
The only way to get the frame any way close to the vertical orientation is to hold the Shift key.
I have also noticed that these images are added to a video editing program rotated into a landscape mode.

There's no such thing as a vertical or horizontal image with iPhones or any phone that sports and accelerometer. It's just a tag they add to images that is inconsistently supported. All photos are landscape, just some are tagged to indicate they are portrait. It's like when I was growing up I always thought my dad was Superman only to later find out he was just a drunk wearing a cape.
If you want to just pull the images directly off the phone or just a generally nice thing for your iPhone/Pod/Pad you can get PhoneDisk. Costs nothing and works great other than my minor user interface complaint that they take advantage of the menubar's menuextras area that is supposed to be Apple only and hardware only at that. Human Interface Guidelines aside, it is a really nice utility.

  • No luck with applying Image Mask!

Im trying to add an Image Mask to a video clip in Motion.
I added the Image Mask to the clip per the instructions then added one of the Brushstroke movies from the Content folder in the Library.
The dashboard shows me that the movie is in the well.
But Im seeing no masking going on.
No matter what blend or source setting I choose, I see no masking.
    What am I doing wrong?

I happened to be mucking about with the brushstroke clip the other day. If you're looking to have the image appear as the brush drags across, you can simply drop the clip on top of the image layer and set the blend mode to silouhette luma. Ya get something like this:
    http://homepage.mac.com/longstrider/iMovieTheater12.html
I tried to apply it as a mask also, but because the pbrush is positioned at the bottom of the frame, it didn't do the trick for me.
    Hope this is helpful

  • Image Mask doesn't import from FCPro to Motion?

I have some footage in final cut that i put an image mask on. The image mask was created in photoshop and knocks out a rectangular shape in my footage. Works great in FCPro.
I export it out as a .MOV with the animation CODEC set to millions of colors+. I read that codec is the only one that retains alpha channels.
I thought my image mask would create an alpha channel but when I import that into Motion, their is no alpha channel and the rectangular shape that should be invisible is now visible.
    Any suggestions?

Check out the sequence settings of the FCP sequence you're exporting from.
If it's NOT animation millions +, then you'll need to export an UNrendered
sequence using Quicktime conversion to animation millions +
to get the alpha channel. If you render it before exporting,
    you lose the alpha channel.
If the sequence settings are animation millions + , then it doesn't matter.
BTW, both JPEG2000 and PNG also support alpha channels.

  • PDF's with images open with dark (mask) overlay..not true in Explorer...how to change setting?

When browsing in Firefox, some links to PDF's that I open, those with images, open with a dark mask overlay. I have have searched around in the VIEW menu with no luck. This does not happen when I open the same PDF links in Windows Explorer so it must be Firefox setting that I need to change. By the way, I have Adobe Creative Suite 4 installed on my computer.

  • Motion 5.2 Missing Image Mask?

I recently noticed (probably coincident with update to 5.2, but not sure) that when I add an Image Mask, I can only see it in the Timeline, not in the layers. In the picture below, you can see the group in both Layers and Timeline, but only in the Timeline does the Mask appear. It's there; you can see the effect of the transparency gradient in the Viewer. Anybody else experiencing this? Anybody have an idea why and/or a suggested solution? Much prefer to work with Layers with Timeline hidden. Thanks for any suggestions.

You need to click the show/hide masks button.

  • Drawing artifacts with motion under a gradient mask

    Hello,
I am having an issue with using a motion under a gradient mask and was hoping someone might have a solution. I have a  transparent png bubble in movie clips that are being randomly sized and  animation started using code. The design has a reflection and I am  using a gradient mask for the effect. The issue is when the bubbles  animate they are causing drawing artifacts. Please see the attached  screen shot or you can see the swf here - http://archetypeworks.com/test/tm/. Below is the code I am using to set the mask. Any help or  suggestions are appreciated.
    Code:
    bottomMask.cacheAsBitmap = true;
    beaker_bottom.cacheAsBitmap = true;
    beaker_bottom.mask = bottomMask;
    Thank you,
    Ococ

Thank you for the suggestion, but that did not work. I also tried breaking apart the png, using the magic wand to select and delete the transparent areas. Still getting the same issue.

  • IMAQ Quantify rseults with use of image mask are not of the right regeons

I'm using the IMAQ quantify VI from labview to analize a binairy image. This binairy image is an 8bit image that consists only of pixels with the value 0 or 1. The places of the binairy  image where the pixels have the value 0, mean that a corresponding image has not data in that place. A pixel value of 1 means that there is data that should be processed later in the program in the corresponding image.
The quantify function is also used to devide the image in 666 regeons with the use of the image mask input. These regeons are squares of 22x22 pixels. The image mask consists of 666 regeons (horizontally 74 sqaures, vertically 9 sqaures) and each of the regeons has his own regeonal number. The resulting regeonal report is used to decide whether each regeon has data in it or not, with the use of the mean value in the report. When the mean value is equal to 0 than it is sure that there is no data in that regeon since all the pixels in the regeon have to have the value of 0. If the mean is not 0 at least one of the pixels in that regeon has the value of 1, wich means that there is data in the regeon. The image mask is created from an 2D array wich is converted to an 16 bit image with the use of IMAQ ArrayToImage.
I've checked that the input data is correct: the binairy image consist of only 1 and 0 values, the image mask is consist of 666 sqaures of 22x22 pixels and each sqaure has pixels in it with the value corresponding to the regeonal number of the sqaure, the binairy image and the image mask have the same size, the image mask is an 16 bit image and both images have the same border size (3).
    Two problems occur:
    1) The regeonal report doesn't consist of 666 elements, but of 665 elements (element 0 to 664)
    2) The data in the regeonal report is not of the right area's. It looks like the data is shifted one to the right in the regeonal report array, the data in element 0 isn't from regeon 0 but from regeon 1, element 1 corresponds to regeon 2, and so on. I'm haven't checked if the data is exactly of the next regeon, but I suspect it because of the regeonal report array being one short. But it is also possible that the regeons aren't placed on the right place in the binary image.
If someone else occured this problem with the IMAQ Quantify function or has a solution to it, I would really apreaciate a reply.

Isn't there anybody who encountered the same problem or with an solution?

  • Seamless repeating pattern - using embedded images with clipping masks

    Hi forum,
We struggle a bit creating a seemless repeating pattern that includes embedded images with clipping masks applied.
Our pattern is a 550x550mm black square with various embedded inserted on top. All of these images have Clipping Masks applied to hide unwanted areas.
These images are placed so they create a seamless repeating pattern and this includes areas that overlap the square.
Once we create a swatch from this pattern the repeatable area becomes too big as it includes the unwanted areas hidden by the clipping masks.
Because the repeatable area is now too big it's actually not repeatable.
We tried various things in order to solve this issue. Pathfinder/crop to delete the unwanted areas in the images etc.
None of them worked good enough.
We though of just livetracing the images, but due to the complexity this is not an option.
Do we really have to do our "cutting" in Photoshop or do you know any fancy tricks for issues like this?
    Appreaciate your insight
    Kenneth

    Kenneth,
You may try the destructive deed, with the Clipping Mask selected:
    1) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown list select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine),
    2) Object>Flatten Transparency, just keep the defaults including 100% Vector,
    3) Shudder.
This should reduce the size to the Bounding Box of the Clipping Path.

  • Rounded corners from image mask disappear with Drop Zone

    Hi All,
I'm really stumped here. I'm on Motion4 and per directions from other posts I have used the following method to attempt a mask shape. The desired outcome is a photo that has a nice square shape with rounded corners.
    1. Using a photo on the canvas.
    2. In the layers menu, I click on the image and select, Add Image Mask
    3. In the inspector I go to Image mask and drop in Frame17 from the contents folder.
The problem...every time the rounded corners from the shape seem to disappear. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? Or suggest another method.
Additional info from Image Mask Tab: Source Channel is set to Alpha, Mask Blend Mode is set to Add, automatically-I did not set these.

When you say that the rounded corners seem to disappear, what do you mean exactly? Are they there at first, but then disappear after you start playing the sequence? Or do the rounded corners not happen at all?
If the corners start, but disappear after playing the project, then it probably means that the Frame 17 image from the content folder is not as long as the image mask. As soon as the Frame ends, it will stop providing the source for the image mask. Fix this by making sure that Frame 17 is at least as long as your image mask.
Alt way, and easier unless you're working in a 3D project, is to simply draw a rectangle mask around your photo and in the Mask tab of the inspector, adjust the roundness parameter until the corners are sufficiently rounded to your liking.

  • Motion Menus - swapping video with image

I'm using Encore CS3. My client wants all of the buttons to be TVs with video of "snow" on their screens. Then when you highlight the button the snow changes to a photo. I can do the TVs and the snow, but I'm starting to wonder if this switch on highlight is possible. Any thoughts?

What about doing a Motion Menu with the TV sets and the static (a Motion Menu, with no real Sub-picture Highlights), then linking each Button to another Menu, that is identical, except that its the real menu and uses the Poster Frame from the actual Timeline? For each TV set, youd have to have an otherwise identical Menu, that had one real Button on it. If you had four TV sets, then youd have to link to four real menus, and then have the remaining Buttons on that Menu, link to an otherwise identical Menu with the corresponding Button live. A lot of Menus, and the 1GB limit might come into play, but would this not work? It would be a lot of linking and a lot of Menus (a really good flowchart would be a necessity). To simplify it a bit, one could link the end of each Timeline back to the first Menu (with the static), rather than allow navigation from any of the real Menus, except to that Timeline activated from the static Menu. Not sure if I got this concept across clearly.

  • Image masks from photoshop to FCP

    Searched the data base and cannot find an answer to;
How to get a BW shaped 'mask' jpg to act as a mask?
    Only making slideshows.
I have tried placing an image on line V1 then the 'mask' on V2 and right clicking to make composite mode luma - sort of worked.
Tried to place the 'mask' (with no image on V2) in the filter matt section with no luck at all.
Next step is to get the mask to move across screen.
I am very confused about this so any help in plain english would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks James, that works.
    Now for the next step.
How do you get the mask to move? and
How do get the forground or/and background image to move across screen?
Tried using the motion section but image is locked in place, I can rotate it, but not move horizontal or vertical.

  • Add Image Mask Problems

Hi, I've recently installed Motion 2 and I've been experimenting with the 'Add Image Mask' function but for some when I to add the image mask to an object no tab appears in the layers list, I just get a small textured grey box next to the object name?
Image Mask will appear in the dashboard, timeline and inspector, but once I click another object they disappear and I have no way of getting them back up again. Any ideas?

Okay, I've just realised you can access the Image
Mask from the timeline but is there anyway of getting
    it in the layers tab?
In the layers tab there should be a small arrow on the left of the object with the mask. Click the arrow and reveals the mask.

  • Fading Out An Image Mask

I've got aproject I'm working on where I want to do a reveal for a logo as the camera flys through a cloud.
I have been playing around with a few things to do this and have finally come down to using the Smoke Cloud generator as an image mask and this works pretty good.
The problem is that when I'm out of the cloud I want the image mask to gently go away but it isn't working as smothly as I would like it.
I've tried offsetting the mask and a few other things but basically I just want to lower the opacity of the effect out or fade it out so it's a smooth removal but there's no options for that in the mask options and it won't let me apply any behaviors to it.
Any ideas? Also, any ideas of easier or better ways to do that reveal?
    thanks

I think I recreated your setup. The Smoke Cloud works quite nice as a mask. Neat trick.
The problem is there are almost no controls for the Image Mask. So try working on the emitter.
In the Smoke Cloud emitter, ramp up Scale, under Master Controls, until the edges of the image aren't being affected by the smoke. You have fine control to ease that as much as you want, and create a nice fade. It works in the demo project I just created.
Another way I've dealt with trying to fade in/out masks:
Duplicate your logo layer, which has the smoke mask. Delete the mask. Then fade out the first one, and fade in the second one (without mask) to make that transition. In this case, you probably want the second logo underneath the first to sell the illusion of the smoke.
