Mount params to speed up XFS partition

I have Arch installed on a LVM volume using the XFS file system. I'd like to know what mount params I could add to give it a speed boost. This is what I have so far:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
/dev/system/root / xfs noatime 0 0
/dev/system/home /home xfs noatime 0 0
/dev/sda5 /boot ext2 noatime 0 0
Now I know that the dump and pass params aren't correct for root. I don't know what to set that to either.
Also how would I hide the physical LVM partition from Windows XP?

LOL @ the windows-advice!
You know I've been a linux convert since almost two years now (without looking back), and I'm only beginning to scratch the surface of the possibilities with linux, whereas my understanding of the (pre-vista) windows-environment was at a (very) high level. Seriously: this change of mindset (from pro to newbie) was the hardest part of the switch, and only in these last weeks I've been able to contribute to this community with some (easy) answers to problems I had encountered myself.
Glad my windows-knowledge serves someone in here

    According to this site:
    http://www.linux.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2 … 00008.html
You just run `xfs_growfs /dev/system/home` to let it fill the available space on the device

  • [~SOLVED] 1 min hang during boot while mounting xfs partitions (LVM)

    Hi all,
After the upgrade I did yesterday (which included linux-3.12.8-1 and lvm2), the boot time has increased by 1 minute as the system hangs while mounting two partitions formatted as xfs and residing on logical volumes.
    $ systemd-analyze blame
    1min 13.676s home-VDP76-videos.mount
    1min 13.111s home-VDP76-VBox_VMs.mount

I have the fsck hook as second-to-last entry in my mkinitcpio.conf, but the fstab entries for these partitions include
    ... xfs defaults 0 0
so, as far as I undertstand, the partitions should not be checked, am I missing something!?
I have googled for similar issues but I did not find anything useful, any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
edit: I blame the check disk because of what reported on the system journal (note the time stamps):

I should also add that the involved partitions are ~20 Gb each and quite full...
edit2: I have freed up almost all space on the video partition and the time for mounting those partitions has now decreased to 8 sec...I will mark the thread as solved, but I still would appreciate an input on the reasons why the partitions are checked regardless of the fstab setting, for example, is this pertinent!?

exactly..in fact the man page says
    fsck.xfs(8) wrote:fsck.xfs - do nothing, successfully
so fsck.xfs simply exits with a zero exit status.
    running xfs_check gives
xfs_check is deprecated and scheduled for removal in June 2014.
    Please use xfs_repair -n <dev> instead.
and xfs_repair does not find errors on both partitions.
Still, I do not understand how nothing being done can take up so much time.
By the way, a short S.M.A.R.T. self-test did not report errors...
In the meanwhile, there has been another kernel upgrade and the timing issue persists, so I am assuming it has something to do with the last lvm2 upgrade.

  • [SOLVED] XFS partition or Harddrive failing

    Hello
My /home XFS-formatted partition is in different disk (seagate 750G). Lately it has begun failing constantly when doing lots of copying/moving work with following type of errors:
    - cannot read first 512 bytes
    - mount: special device "dev/mount-by-label/home" does not exist
The last one happened during normal boot. After powering off, waiting a while and booting again all was good - until I tried to backup my data, when midway while copying I got:
FXS metadata write error block 0x403e880 in sdb1
    I/O error in filesystem meta-data ("xlog_iodone") error 5 buf count 2560
    Filesystem: Log I/O Error Detected
I tried to find solution from several forums, but all I got was to try "xfs_repair". It doesn't find any errors when the partition/drive is working properly, but after I tried backup my data and got those errors above, "xfs_repair" gives following:
    [root@golved ~]# xfs_repair /dev/sda1
Phase 1 - find and verify superblock...
superblock read failed, offset 0, size 524288, ag 0, rval -1
    fatal error -- Input/Output error
I am currently trying "smartmontools", but at leas now it doesn't work. Maybe after reboot it gives me some sensible output. Meanwhile, can any of you give me any pointers how to find out is the problem in XFS filesystem or in my year old Seagate Barracuda 7200.11/12(?) 750G harddrive? How about getting my data out, is there way to bypass the logging that xfs does? I am thinking about that because of those "Log I/O errors"... Currently, whenever the drive mounts properly, I can do some copying but it halts eventually. Maybe disabling logging and all other non-needed things from xfs would let me backup more data before I/O errors arise?

That "dd_rescue" could work if I had 750G drive, which I dont. I think now my only option is mount the home partition as read only to prevent more damage, and try to copy remaining data in smaller pieces - maybe then the drive won't bork.

  • [fixed] /var on separate xfs partition

As for topic, I recently moved my /var directory to a separate partition, formatted as xfs, mounted in /mnt. Problem is: after that I experienced slowdowns when using pacman (with high disk activity). I think the problem might be xfs (as I've read pacman is slow on that) or maybe pacman has problem using the link in /var to my mounted partition?
I'd like to know whether there's some obvious problem before trying to change filesystem type (which one, btw?)...
edit: fixed by changing fs type

    Hi,
Maybe it would be better to let the logfiles in /private/var/log untouched. You can rotate the logfiles to another disk, without having trouble. See /etc/weekly (daily / monthly) there you can edit the path.
Safer against updates is to create your own files in /etc/yourconfigfiles/ . I use this for rotating my logfiles, because logfiles like secure.log, system.log and asr.log grows very fast and I don't want xGigabyte big logfiles, which are often opened from my system.
Don't touch /etc/fstab , because it is deprecated and maybe this will disappear in next versions.
    Write you rotatescripts:
    /etc/yourconfigfiles/
    daily.my
    weekly.my
    monthly.my
    Edit rotate files:
    /etc/daily
    /etc/weekly
    /etc/monthly
Put to them a line like following:
    . /etc/yourconfigfiles/daily.my
if you want to exit manually before the system script does unimportant things, like rotating your rotated logfiles then do an exit after your . /etc/yourconfigfiles/* entry.
    hope this helps,

  • [SOLVED] mounting a plain dm-crypt encrypted partition

After I botched an upgrade today, I'd like to save some stuff from an encrypted /home partition and start over.  I'm trying to mount the partition from a LiveCD and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
    [root@archiso ~]# cryptsetup create home /dev/sda3
    Enter passphrase:
    [root@archiso ~]# mount /dev/mapper/home /media/home
    [ 215.550259] SQUASHFS error: Can't find a SQUASHFS superblock on dm-3
    [ 215.566713] EXT4-fs (dm-3): unable to read superblock
    [ 215.580030] EXT2-fs (dm-3): error: unable to read superblock
I don't think there's anything wrong with the partition, it was working fine earlier today, and from what I've read I think I'm trying to unlock and mount it correctly.  The only similar post I could find was this, but couldn't find any older install media to test with aside from dead torrents and I'm not sure what version of dm-crypt was used to create the partition.

It's ext3, and I think I did use LUKS after all.  It looks like I just had the wrong drive name, after running blkid /dev/sda3 wasn't even listed, but /dev/sda9 matched it in capacity.  Using that instead I was able to cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda9 home and mount /dev/mapper/home /media/home worked fine afterward.  I have no idea what I was doing when I made this setup, but I'll pay attention when doing it this time (and not wait 6 months to -Syu and break everything).
Thanks to both of you for the help.

  • External Hard Drive not mounting. In Disk Utility, the partition in the drive is greyed out.

So my Seagate 500GB drive, didn't mount the other day, and I investigated a bit and tried repairing the disk and this happened... please someone give me hope! Ihad so many important and irreplaceable videos and documents on this drive!!!

    Anyone? Please?

  • Mount XFS on mac

    Hey guys,
i had a lacie edmini disk that broke a few days ago. So i opened the box and pulled out the disk and plugged it into a generic usb box. So now i have access to the drive but the partition that i want from the disk is in the xfs format. I havnt had any luck on mounting the drive
So my question for you - Do you know of any software that'll allow me to mount an xfs partition within OSX?
My backup plan must be to run it off a linux live cd but it would be nice to get it out within osx... please let me know! thanks

You can run Linux on a Mac via several emulation and virtualization options as well as directly. One of those options may offer you the ability to do XFS. Emulation and virtualization options are offered here*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
Some Unix operating systems available for the Mac are here*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/otheros.php
If installing Linux on a Mac without emulation or virtualization that doesn't provide its own PC formatted environment, you'll need to format an external hard drive if it can be mounted on the Mac, or format the Mac a different file system (erasing its contents) to install Linux. Contact the Mac on Linux vendor to ask how this can be done.

  • Z400 Discs with EFI partition not mounting after Win 7 Pro upgrade

HP z400: After a repair/upgrade of Win 7 Pro (64) sp1, any external disc with an EFI partition will not mount.  Drive will be present in BIOS and Disc Management, though without a letter. Unable to assign a drive letter.  All other discs mount correctly.  Drives with EFI partition will mount on other PCs.  All drivers appear to be current and fuctional.
    This question was solved.

I figured it out... after two weeks of head-scratching, I finally found the cause.
I run MacDrive 8 so i can read discs with HFS+ formatting.  That program needed to be fully uninstalled and re-installed after the upgrade.  I had de-activated it prior to the upgrade, but it needed more than that.  Everything works now as expected.
But wouldn't it be ince if Windows would read mac discs natively?

  • Installation CD fails to mount XFS drive as /

I am trying to install arch on a old Vaio laptop. I can boot from the CD, then it fails, so I copied a few files and modules on to a small hd partion with damn small linux. So fare every thing seems to work ok... but
when I set the mount points the / on my xfs hda1 fails. I loaded the module with loaddisk fs2.img. I can do
    > mkfs.xfs /dev/hda1
    but I can't mount it.
    me> mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
linux> mounting /dev/hda1 on /mnt failed: Invalid argument
    me> mount /dev/hda1/ /mnt/
    linux> mounting /dev/hda1/ on /mnt/ failed: Not a directory
    What am I doing wrong?
(it works with reiser, ext2 and ext3)

Do you use 0.7.2 iso or 0.8?

  • Can't mount my Windows partition

    Hey Arch Forums.
I've installed Arch64 and Arch32 on my desktop and laptop respectively, both on an array of Ext4 partitions (both have separate partitions for /, /home and /var). I followed the beginner's guide down to the letter, and now have both machines running GNOME.
Both machines also have a separate NTFS Windows XP partition, but the trouble is that neither can mount, browse or access the Windows partition without being root.
First off, typing 'mount /dev/sda1' (that's the Windows partition) resulted in '/dev/sda1 not in fstab or mtab.'
So, I added /dev/sda1 to fstab with options 'rw,users, noauto 0 0'. Rebooted, but then I found out that it decided to automatically mount itself anyway and it wasn't showing in places, and I still couldn't access the partition without being root. Anyway, so I sudo umount it, and then discover I need to add my user account to the 'disk' group to be able to issue mount/umount commands.
This worked, but it was still automounting on boot and I still couldn't access it without being root. I basically want to be able to just select the 'Windows' entry from the Places menu, have it mount and show on the desktop (it's not showing on the desktop when I boot up atm), and have Nautilus open up with the partition's root directory.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Well, I was trying previously to mount it with ntfs, as that's what was used under Ubuntu. But it's working now with ntfs-3g, I don't need to be root to read/write the disc now. However, I'm still having trouble with mounting it as non-root.
First off, this is my fstab:
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    #/dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    #/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    #/dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
    UUID=6cae25c5-cc5b-42ae-ad3a-70e892274a34 / ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
    UUID=f7e4d887-43d5-4ac4-869f-a2a5e4c16e2f /var ext4 defaults 0 2
    UUID=4a07547f-1fd6-41ea-8db7-469120830111 /home ext4 defaults,noatime 0 2
    UUID=08d54f59-520a-4e8e-9a9d-d440f2eff54e swap swap defaults 0 0
    UUID=5AB82DB8B82D9393 /media/Windows ntfs-3g defaults,users,exec 0 0
As you can see, it's mounting on boot up at the moment. When I put noauto into the options, it doesn't mount, but when I'm on the desktop and try to mount it as non-root, I get the error "ntfs-3g-mount: user has no write access to mountpoint /media/Windows". As I was typing that out, another error appeared telling me that DBus encountered an error as it did not receive a reply.
When I issue the mount command in terminal, I get "mount: only root can do that." - what should I do?

  • How to Mount Swap Partition

I have a secondary disk (duplicated via rsync) that failed. I had to rebuild some of the partitions and now need to mount them. I could uncomment the vfstab entries and reboot (see below), but would rather just issue the mount command. On the "regular" partitions, the "mount /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 /backup", etc. is no problem, but since the swap partition isn't /swap, how would I mount it?

  • External Iomega Drive Partition won't mount

    Hi:
I have a partition on my Iomega external drive that won't mount. The drive has 2 partitions. One I use for back up works fine. This other one is visiable but won't mount. I have run disk utitility and it says everything is fine but says it isn't journaled. It won't let me turn on journaling and won't let me get it mounted, what can I do?

    Hi Dennis:
Thank you for your attempt at helping me. I opened Disk Utility and saw the greyed out "video Editing" partition, clicked on it and tried to mount it. It says it cannot mount the volume. I then clicked on the greyed out drive partition and clicked on disk first aid. It gives me the following screen.
Verify and Repair volume “Video Editing”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Video Editing appears to be OK.
It just plain won't mount but I have in the past been able to see the contents inside and the other partition for which I use as back up for my iMac works just fine so I know the drive is working fine. I just cannot get this partition to mount.
    Any other ideas?
    Thank you,
    Reid

  • Auto-detect & mount disk partitions and removable drives

I use ubuntu in addition to my current wip of installing arch linux. Now i have installed lxde desktop. But i am not able to see any of my partitions of my disk and other hdd. Besides removable drives also dont get mounted.
Similarly if a new partition is created the same also gets autodetected in ubuntu. eg my arch linux partition. I need not go to do any fiddling in the system to recognize the same.
So is it possible to achieve the same under archlinux? So want to know how to get  the same done.
what i want is to have the partitions[ext & ntfs] detected when the filemanager is opened and mount/unmount at my will, just as i do now in ubuntu.
So far what i have done is based on the lxde wiki, i installed the polkit-gnome gvfs package but nothing is mounted.
i would like to have specific instructions to how to work out and get the above  done.
    pls guide to the same.

What do you mean when you say that pcmanfm is not displaying *any* partitions? You see no files at all? Or do you mean: it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab?
I mean it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab. As of now pcmanfm shows only the arch systems partitions which I created while installation : root, and home. Balance of partitions of other systems of the same drive and second hard drive is not shown.
When you say that in Ubuntu, newly created partitions show up automatically, do you mean that if you change the partitioning on your internal drive, the changes are automatically reflected in /etc/fstab?
Yes the changes are automatically reflected in the filemanager of ubuntu, ie. Nautilius. However Ubuntu fstab as you see in the previous post of mine contains no entry to other partitions other than just ubuntus. In the fstab I posted above you can very well see it just shows 4 partitions of hdd1  [similar to the way the arch fstab shows only its own] where it is installed :boot, root, home, swap. Whereas there is two more partitions there viz windows and a ntfs. You don’t see them in fstab, but when you open the nautilius filemanager you can see the drives. See the image link of my filemanger posted below at the end. In that shared data and windows are two ntfs partition of hdd1 where ubuntu is installed. Arch is installed on 2nd hdd alongwith a Ubuntu.289gb partition is a ubuntu LVM along with arch root and arch home you can see.
If you mean that Ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted or when you change the partitioning on one and create a file system, that you can configure to work automatically in arch.
Yes ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on internal drives and also removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted  . As you can see in the image i have posted, it shows all my internal drive partitions automatically. No fstab editing nothing. No fiddling with system files so far i have done in ubuntu. For eg i installed arch a month back, the same you can see is automatically seen in the image. All i required was to   update grub  to recognise árch'. Post that when you boot, automatically the new arch partitions are seen. No fstab fiddling anything. Thus tomorrow morning if i create a new partition on my hdd via ubuntu all i require is to reboot post the creation and i will see the new partition asap.
As you can see in the image all my partitions are seen, the one i want i click it and it gets mounted, if i dont want it stays/gets unmounted. And its not just ubuntu i saw the same in some other distros also like suse, centos, fedora.
As far as the lxde wiki is concerned, there it is mentioned to install polkit gnome gvfs for mounting and i did the same but nothing still happens.
So this is what exactly i am asking how to do the same on my arch system. So if i am guided i wil go ahead and work to achieve the same.
