Mountain lion on partitioned drive
if i put mountain lion on a separate partition can i run programs from the snow leopard partition when i boot up in mountain lion
Well the answer is it depends, let me explain.
If the program is a executable for example a script (shell, perl, etc ...) you will be able to run it from ML, provide you mount your Snow Leopard partition. Also, you will have access to all your data on snow leopard.
But, if it is a large program with files and links to various locations then it might not be possible.
In both cases It definetly won't show up in Launch Pad. You would have to launch it manually from terminal.
Alternatively, you can install it on a virtual machine like VMware fusion and run both OS at the same time.
You can check my blog to see how .... http://nyacomputing.com/installing-mountain-lion-on-vmware/

I'm getting S.M.A.R.T. error when trying to install Mountain lion. Hard drive works pretty well despite the Failing status. I understand that many users have been facing the same issue. My hard drive was/is working perfectly. Has Apple patched it yet?
Has someone found a solution which is not replacing the hard drive which works just fine? Or Is anyone aware of a procedure that can force the installation despite the S.M.A.R.T error? Below details of my hard drive
Thanks

I can't boot any latest gen imacs off a mountain lion USB bootable drive
So I have created a mountain lion USB boot drive because I work on a number of imacs, but for the latest generation it doesn't seem to work.
I create it in the normal way, downloading the app through itunes then using http://liondiskmaker.com/ to create the usb boot drive.
When I try to boot from it: http://i.imgur.com/IUDlv.jpg
I get this icon on the screen: http://i.imgur.com/DNc8U.jpg
The weird thing is that I have used this exact bootable usb stick to upgrade many, many older imacs to mountain lion. I don't want to have to redownload the entire 5gb or so every time I need to install mountain lion on a new imac. I've tried this with both the 21.5" and the 27" varieties and both have the same issue. What is causing this?
I also need to boot from it directly rather then doing an in-OS upgrade in the odd times I'm working with an imac at a place that doesn't have a decent internet connection (6 gigs of downloading isn't available to everybody in Australia)
Someone has mentioned that it may be due to new imacs not allowing older installation media, but I have downloaded the latest version as of 3 days ago and it does the same thing. It has nothing to do with Lion Disk Maker. That is only used to Create a Boot USB thumb drive, or DVD, of the Lion/Mt Lion install files. It does not add anything to either the DVD or thumb drive you create with it.
The problem lies with the Special build Apple creates for every new Mac that comes out that has different hardware then the previously released models.
Eventually they will come out with a new updated build, like 10.8.3, that will contain all the drivers for every Mac computer ML can be installed on, Older and the newest. Until that happens there is only one way to get a version that will boot on the newest systems. And that is to use either the Recovery HD or the Online Internet Recovery system ON one of those New Mac's. Those newer Mac's are the only one that can access the Special Build needed for the new systems. -
Cannot install Mountain Lion on empty drive
I'm helping my father try to install the OS onto a newly installed internal drive on his Mac Pro. He's trying to install Mountain Lion, which is the same OS X generation as his usual boot drive (which is remaining in the system—the new drive is getting an OS as a backup boot drive).
The problem is that the Mountain Lion installer, downloaded from the App Store, refuses to install on the new drive. The drive, which is formatted but otherwise empty, does not appear as an available drive to install on.
My father believes that this is related to the note in the System Requirements saying that the Mac being installed on must already have Snow Leopard or Lion installed on it. I'm not so sure, but it's a valid question: can Mountain Lion be installed only as an upgrade, requiring an existing OS install on the actual drive being installed to?
My interpretation of the listed requirement is that you have to boot from Snow Leopard or later to do the install, because the installer has to contact the App Store, but the requirement is worded ambiguously enough that it could mean that the drive itself must have Snow Leopard or later on it. It doesn't make sense to me, though, for this installer to be useable only as an upgrade; there are numerous situations under which a person might need to install an OS on an empty drive.
So there's two questions here: can Mountain Lion be installed on an empty drive, and are there other likely reasons for the installer to not offer the drive in question as an available destination?Mark McKean wrote:

Yes, it can be installed on an empty drive but the drive must be properly partitioned and formatted first. The HD must have a "GUID Partition Table" which you establish when you first partition the drive (use the Options... button), and it must then be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Boot from his current drive and run the ML installer from there with the new drive as the target. Note that if you haven't actually downloaded the ML installer yet, when you do, it automatically starts running but you get the choice to continue and choose the drive.
Snow Leopard or Lion are mentioned as prerequisites because the days of install DVD's are over; the installer must be downloaded and at least Snow Leopard is necessary to get to the App Store to do that. -
Why my Mountain Lion recovery partition cannot boot ?
Hi
I cannot boot from the recovery partition on Mountain Lion.
I am only offered Internet Recovery - which is slow.
I installed Mountain Lion from scratch on my Mid-2010 macbook pro.
I was running Lion, got the Mountain Lion app from the app store and created an USB stick
I have no bootcamp but enabled filevault after installation.
The recovery HD appears to be there and to be ok - see output below.
So why am I forced into Interent Recovery?
Can I 'recover' the Recovery partition ?
Edoardos-MacBook-Pro:~ edoardo$ diskutil list

I can even mount it and list its contents:

Recovery HD
This version of the installer doesn’t actually include all of the necessary files and data, so installing Mountain Lion from within recovery mode requires an Internet connection to download the actual OS.
If you are worried about backups/being on the road, you should always create a bootable back up of your system onto a USB or Fireware drive. Use Carbon Copy Cloner, and it will automate the incremental backups and have a fully bootable running system if your internal should ever stop working.
If you download the installer from the store, make sure to create a bootable install disk also; -
Mountain Lion corrupting hard drive
Ever since ML came out, and I installed it, I've been having crazy errors on my hard drive. I've had to reload ML a dozen times due to different partition errors on my hard drive. I've had node, string and other errors on my hard drive.
After the first set of errors, I went to the Apple store and they said they didn't see anything wrong with the computer and just to re-download ML. I did that, many times, and I still had errors. I installed an Intel SSD and made it the main drive and I still had the same problems.
Yesterday I re-loaded it due to issues with a program. Today I have a node error. I tried to fix it with Disk Warrior, had to by it due to all the problems, and it won't boot up. Just locks up on boot.
What the **** is Mountain Lion's problem?? What's my problem??
HELP!!!!!
P.S. How can I download a copy of the ML install so I don't have to wait to download it every time?Ok, along the lines that this may be caused by a piece of software, here's a copy of a crash log I'm getting when I'm trying to export a small video using Quicktime. I'm exporting the video in a .MOV format and Quicktime keeps crashing near the end of the export. I've been seeing this kind of behavior, crashing that is, in many apps since Mountain Lion install.
Can anyone tell me why it crashed????

After upgrading to mountain lion my usb drive gets disconnected
I have a late 2009 iMac that just installed Mountain Lion.
Every single USB external drive that is connected, shortly after a while gets unmounted.
I tried with disabling sleep mode for HD etc and no success.
Then I tried USB card reader and same exactly think. Memory card gets mounted and after about a minute gets unmounted.
What could be a problem or better yet, sollution ?
Any help is appreciated.Power down and disconnect all ext HDs. Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try mounting them again.

"mountain lion" esata card drives won't mount
Just installed mountain lion on my brand new (2x2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon) MacPro tower with an Apple store bought eSata card.
Yesteray everythign fine under regular Lion.
Today, with Mountain Lion, my drives on the eSata card will not mount.
If I connect the drive sthrough firewire they do mount (phew!)
But I need them to operate under eSata for speed and because I have a lot of external drives.
It only appears to be a Mountain Lion issue.
Anyone else report problems?Hmmm..there were never any drivers for my card. In fact I don't even know what my card is..because it just came from Apple.
Okay..I found drivers..

Mountain Lion Recovery Partition is 10.7.4
I just bought a second hand MacBook Pro 15 and erased the HD which had 10.7.4 Lion installed on it. I installed Mountain Lion on it and migrated my account from my other MacBook Pro which has Mountain Lion on it.
I needed to repair the user permissions as it wasn't functioning properly so rebooted holding alt and found that the Recovery Partition said 10.7.4.
I'm not sure how this could have happened - especially as I had erased the HD.
My other MacBook Pro Recovery Partition says 10.8.4.
Is there a way to update the Recovery partition? Thanks.
It's OK, everything is backed up - it's all on my other MacBook Pro as well as on a Time Machine backup. -
Mountain lion cant read drives??
Anyone find that mountain lion has trouble reading external drives such as STARDOM drives. It can find the drive, but no directory comes up???
Yes it is still connected to the network
I can ping it, i can reach it and as i said before i see it correctly in the finder on the left bar but
the icon is vanished from the desktop and so also from the other programs: Adobe Bridge for example
So I have to click again on the icon in the finder to mount it again -
I recently upgraded to mountain lion, latest version OS and now my external drives are read-only. They are formatted Mac OS Extended and I have been using one of them for Time Machine. How do I fix?
Thankshttp://pondini.org/TM/C6.html

Mountain lion loses network drive
Seems like most (but not every) time I wake my iMac from sleep, it loses my network drives. Any idea why?
Details:
24" iMac (not sure why that will make a difference, but whatever)
Mountain Lion
Using AFP to connect to my Western Digital MyBook World Edition II. Please don't say it's the NAS, my two other computers in the house (Windows) don't have any problem w/ the nas.My Mac Pro will not stay connected to my Windows box.
When I open the Network in the Finder it is blank for a very long time, and there are no options for me to refresh or see any kind of status. Just blank.
Randomly, it seems, the PC will appear in the network list and I can use it.
However, if I begin a file transfer to it I have to stay at the computer to monitor it because the connection gets lost when I am not there. Perhaps it is the sleep issue mentioned by the OP.
The PC is wired; the Mac Pro is WiFi.
Mac Pro: 10.8.2
PC: Windows XP Pro SP3, fully updated.
Maybe someone at Apple will read these posts and figure it out. -
Hi there,
I edit in my office with a Mac Pro (2010) desktop, but occasionally I have to edit out of office. My trusty old 2008 MacBook Pro just died, so I've ordered a new retina MBP. It will come loaded with Mavericks. The problem is that my editing software (Avid Media Composer) is always an OS release or two behind, and Media Composer doesn't run properly (yet) with Mavericks.
So... here's my question. I've got a 250Gb SSD that I can put in an external enclosure. I could install Mountain Lion on this SSD, and then install Avid.
Then, on those occasions when I need to edit out of office with my new retina MBP, I would boot up to this drive.
Does this sound good? Will the new retina MBP work run on Mountain Lion?
Thanks for any advice,
MalcolmYou might be able to depending on the exact version of Mt Lion you have on that external. The newest iMacs originally got shipped with a special version of Mt Lion 10.8.4 (right not even the newest release of Mt Lion) that included the proper driver package for the new hardware. If you had a copy of that your new 2013 MBP might boot from it. But since you have a copy from a 2010 model I doubt it would. The only way to tell is TRY IT. No harm will come to your new MBP if it doesn't.

Mountain Lion polling optical drive every 6mins (LG BluRay)
Since I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion my LG Blu Ray drive seems to poll every 6 mins.
I have a Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (Early 2008)I have been seeing similar behavior with my Mac Mini Server
running ML client with my LG Portable Multi Super Blu.
In addition, with a similar frequency, the hard drives connected
to my Airport Extreme Base Station are awoken out of sleep
any time I have them connected to any of my Macs running
ML. Under Snow Leoaprd, they would remain asleep
unless I would directly access them for file access. This
is un-nerving since they keep spinning up then spinning down,
which can't be good for them and is a PITA having to connect
and disconnect all the time. -
Installing Lion on partitioned drive
I am sure this already been discussed, but I couldn't find an answer on my search through the forums. I d/l Lion today and the installer is saying that I cannot install on my main startup disc which has 10.6.8. My drive is partitioned.
I am sure there is something I have missed, so advice is welcomeOK, then first do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Oh, and I would quit the Lion installer for now. Make a copy of it and store the copy in your Downloads folder so you can later make a bootable installer USB flash drive. See:
Make Your Own Lion Installer
1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that you can use without having to re-download Lion.
