Mouse cursor problem (dock magnification, highlight issue)

My logitech wired USB mouse has an issue with my iMac.  It worked for a couple weeks.  After then, whenever it is plugged in, it does not magnify the dock, nor highlight things correctly (cursor does not turn into hand over links, does not open nor highligh menus unless clicked, etc).
After searching, this problem has dated back years and across OS X versions, usually having to do with a wireless or wired Logitech mouse (which mine is).  The first thing people suggest is restarting/killing dock, re-install OS, repair permissions, among other things.  This rarely fixes the issue.  The solution that seems to fix it for most people is to simply unplug the mouse and plug it back in.  Most people state this fixes it until it happens again a week later and either they do the unplug-plug again or just give up and switch to another mouse.
I have tried re-plugging it back in but it doesn't solve the issue.  Other mice work just fine which I've have gone to, but I really want to use that mouse (plus, I hate giving up!)
Can anyone help me?  I'd appreciate it!  Thank you!
EDIT: Here are some more clues to the puzzle:
- The mouse works fine on multiple other computers
- Other people have described this problem as the iMac no longer knows where the mouse cursor is until a mouse-click is pressed.  That is why it doesn't open menus, magnify the dock, change into a hand when hovering over a link, etc.  To open and select a menu at the top of the screen, for example, the left mouse button must be clicked and held, then let go of when you want to choose something.

In webkit browsers my mouse/cursor does not respond to state changes. So when I hover over a link the mouse/cursor does not change to a hand or when I hover over a text box it doesn't change to the text cursor. It is really annoying. If I do click on a link after I click the cursor turns into a hand and then stays that way no matter what I hover over.
Just a remark:
I'm also facing a similar problem running chromium on 32-bit arch with KDE. When I move the mouse cursor over the edges/corners of the browser the mouse cursor changes state (so a s to show arrows used for changing windows size) but uses the default X11 theme instead of my KDE mouse cursor theme....
Also I'm using gtk-kde4 for gtk apps in KDE.

    My system is win7 64 pheon 550 ,m3a board,audgy2 and 5770
    The problem is .....at any time the mouse cursor increases size to extra large and its very annoying.When checking mouse settings everything is set to normal.
    The only fix i could find that stopped this is ....enable mouse tale then it stays normal size but having the tale is very annoying
    There are also hot fixes at ati but dont work  cheers steve

    ive solved the problem
    i have a nortek cordless mouse and have had for a year and worked faultless with a nvidia card but when i upgraded to an ati 5770 this problem started.
    i have searched the net and found other people with the same problem but its not common.Ive posted this problem here and at driverheaven and some of the replies to this problem were good but didnt help.

  • Mouse cursor problem with CS4 64 bit under Windows 8.1

    When using tools such as the various lasso tools, I get three cursors in a horizontal line, the leftmost one being the active one. Then when I click in a panel, it turns into a hieroglyph resembling three small vehicles or boats in a line. I don't know if this is related to the reputed bug that plagues gamers using Win 8.1. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    I seem to have solved my problem and give the solution for the benefit of anyone else encountering it.
    I had right clicked on the Desktop and selected Screen Resolution. I then clicked on 'Make text and other items larger or smaller' and moved the slider to the right to make the PS panels larger.
    This seems to have caused the problem, and I overcame it by returning the slider to the central position and then reducing the screen resolution to bring the panels up to the desired size.

  • Mouse cursor problem when external display connected

    When my external Apple display is connected to my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012, 10.10.2) the cursor jumps to a spot on the external display and will not release from it. I move the cursor anywhere and it jumps back to that original spot. Cursor operates normally when the external monitor is not attached. I've used the monitor for a few years with no problem, but this started just recently. I do not use the external monitor daily and I cannot recall doing anything that might have triggered this problem. Any ideas on a fix? Thanks.
    Bill

    Just an update to close this. Call Apple Support. An advanced support tech walked me through several procedures. Eventually, the problem disappeared after deleting a bunch of plist files and startup items. Which particular file caused the problem we don't know. But problem gone and I will monitor going forward. Hopefully it was a one-time corruption of one of the preference files.

  • QEMU mouse cursor problem

    Hello folks, I was trying to have a little fun with QEMU, so I installed Arch and Xorg in it, but after starting X then twm through startx, my mouse pointer shows only until I click for the first time, then becomes ad stays invisible even if I reboot; a poweroff is necessary. Here's the QEMU command used:
    qemu-system-x86_64 -netdev user,id=vmnet -device e1000,netdev=vmnet -enable-kvm -cpu host -smp 4 -m 2048 -drive file=VMs/arch.img,index=0,media=disk,format=raw -usbdevice mouse
    (I already installed and used Gentoo with success with this command without -usbdevice mouse)
    And here's the Xorg.0.log: http://paste.pound-python.org/show/Qimj … BGkwIW7Sy/
    The QEMU wikipage and doc says that -usbdevice mouse overrides the PS/2 mouse emulation, but ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse is detected at some point by Xorg.
    I must say that I do not fully understand the situation here.

    Hmm, it's strange. Usually, you have to point the mouse on the border of a window to resize it or press "alt" and click on the border to move it..

  • 10.4.8 • Mouse • Cursor • Dock

    It appears the issue behind the problems is the OS is not recognizing the mouse/cursor as it is hovering. Thus, the dock doesn't pop out when the mouse is moved over it.
    In open windows, the close button doesn't show the X, nor the + or - signs in the other buttons.
    Menus don't highlight as cursor is moved up/down in the menu windows; cursor itself doesn't change as it typically does when moved over certain items.
    Apple HELP! This is driving us nuts!

    I too ran into this with a Logitech Cordless Optical Mouse and Keyboard combo. Just after the update to 10.4.8, I repaired permissions, verified/repaired the disk, and still experienced the sticky mouse syndrome. I also noticed that none of the rollovers on web pages worked, none of the pull down menus worked in any application, and in most Adobe applications, the cursor would disappear when I need to work on anything that used a tool other than the "move" tool.
    That being said, I upgraded the Logitech Control Center software to version 2.1.2 from 1.x and saw no change. I then read (on the Logitech forums) that there were problems with 2.1.2 not recognizing some Logitech hardware... Downgraded to 2.1.1 and still saw no change.
    I've reinstalled the combo updater to no avail, and I've tried just uninstalling the Logitech Control center. There was only medium level hope here... Without the Logitech Control Center software installed, my Mac OS doesn't seem to recognize modifier keys, like CMD/OPT/CTRL... So, that's not very useful. The mouse behaved nicely, though without the keyboard playing well with others, I really didn't test too much further.
    Here's what I've found works (for what it's worth):
    - Update 10.4.8
    - repair permissions
    - verify/repair disk as needed
    - uninstall LCC and reinstall 2.1.1
    - remove batteries from mouse (so that it doesn't work or try to work)
    - restart Mac with a wired mouse plugged in
    (also works with a bluetooth mouse instead).
    All is now good with the world, though I'd really like to have my mouse unleashed again. I'm pretty sure my significant other will want her mouse back at some point... But at least I can do productive work again.
    Logitech and Apple used to play nicely together. Maybe someone pushed someone on the playground.

  • Mac Pro + Airport Extreme = Mouse Cursor Chaos Display Issues When Dragging

    Graphic display issues (mouse lag and latency displayed on the screen when dragging an object (photo, window, application, document, etc.) from the top 50% of the screen to the bottom 50% of the screen. Mouse cursor starts to display serious lag and latency and loses ability to stay on the object being dragged anywhere below the 50% horizon line of any display.
    Mac Pro (any model 2007 to current 2009 production) with Airport Extreme installed.
    Symptoms:
    On any object the mouse cursor selects and then drags from anywhere in the upper portion (50%) of the screen display (no matter the display being used) to the bottom portion (50%) of the screen display, shows great lagging and latency as if the cursor is "hanging on for dear life" or as if the processor were running several intense applications and cursor was not responding.
    The mouse cursor fails to stay in concert with the object being dragged anywhere in the lower portion of the screen although is fine in the upper portion of the screen.
    Issue only presents itself when selecting and dragging an object from bottom to top or top to bottom of the display.
    I have deduced that the issue with this "polarity" (i.e. the 50% horizon level of the screen north and south) is due to some magnetic or waveform interference from the Airport Extreme card and most likely due to its position on the motherboard and/or next the the Intel processor. Also could be enhanced by the Bluetooth card which is also located next to this card.
    After checking various Mac Pros (at Apple stores, friends and received via Apple Online store) the common denominator is the Airport Extreme Card. When it is NOT present, no issues are present with display cursor lag; when it IS present, all the above apply.
    No one at Apple seems to realize this issue or cares about it. Ditto for Genius Bar Apple Employees; seems to be a mystery on par with the Bermuda Triangle (which ironically is also magnetically-polarity related.)
    Still waiting for a Apple Product Engineer to contact me and have 3 tickets open with Apple from 3 different Mac Pros on this. Problem first noticed May 2009 although first generation Mac Pro from 2007 also suffered same issues and just now putting the puzzle together on this relationship.
    Any others out there notice this as well? Check it out if you have a Mac Pro and Airport Extreme Card installed inside of it.

    I also have the same exact problem. I have a i5 iMac Mid 2011 with an upgrade to 10.10 Yosemite connected to an external display. I like you never had this issue with Mavericks. Zoom is so painfully slow now that I had to disable it. My iMac has 12 GB of RAM and even with no apps opened, zoom is killer slow.. makes me want to punch a wall-kinda slow.
    I think it's clear to say that something is up with 10.10.. some bug.
    Apple please fix us zoomers

  • Dock magnification problem

    I have my Dock set to magnify the icons when the mouse rolls over them. Problem is, it eventually stops working, and just won't magnify until I restart my Mac. The settings do not change - they remain with the same magnification setting: "On", and about "70%".
    I'm not sure how to fix this or why it is even doing this. I already tried deleting that one file: "com.apple.dock.plist", and it didn't help.

    My husband and I have two new MacBookPros on 9/1/07, identical, and both have dock magnification problems. We'll be working and suddenly the dock becomes huge, like a million times larger, and great shadows appear to move over our screens, then it freezes, we have to force quit at power button. Happens all the time when we have magnification on small, med or large. We've got about 20 apps down on the dock, we've taken some off, thinking 20 was too many. What's is going on

  • Dock magnification, menu bar and scrolling problems

    I'm running 10.6.4 and have suddenly noticed that for no apparent reason, dock magnification, roll over menus and screen scrolling in Zoom mode have stopped working. I've checked all the settings and they are set properly. If I shut down and restart, everything works fine for a few minutes, then the problem starts up again. I've fixed permissions and have even unplugged the Mac for a few minutes, but nothing seems to work permanently. I've checked my CPU cycles and they're down in the 1-4% range, so nothing seems to be running in the background. I'm baffled why this suddenly began and why, after a restart it works fine for a few minutes then the problem starts up again. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Problem with i-Planet and change mouse cursor

    Hello, I know how change mouse cursor using Toolkit.getdefaultToolkit().createCustomCursor(Imagen,new Point(0,0),String) and setCursor. It works in a local applet but it doesn`t in my aplication. This aplication attach a i-Planet web server and displays the following error:
    java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: java/awt/Toolkit: method createCustomCursor(Ljava/awt/Image;Ljava/awt/Point;Ljava/lang/String;)Ljava/awt/Cursor; not found
    Where's the problem? Maybe an incorrect jdk version. I dont think so because I use 1.3.1 version and this method works since 1.2 version.
    Thank you for all.

    hi,
    iplanet has its own jar files in \Netscape\Server4\bin\https which contains the same jar files as it is in jdk dir...so importing ur jar files thru the environment might create a similar problem

  • Multithread mouse cursor issue

    I have noticed a bad behavior of SetMouseCursor function when used in multithreaded programs.
    I've written a simple program to demonstrate it (the full project is in the attached zip).
    Pressing the Start button an asynchronous timer is started and the "hourglass" cursor is shown.
    case PANEL_CMD_START:
    SetMouseCursor (VAL_HOUR_GLASS_CURSOR);
    SetCtrlAttribute(panel,PANEL_CMD_START, ATTR_DIMMED, 1);
    SetCtrlAttribute(panel,PANEL_LED, ATTR_CTRL_VAL, 1);
    hTimer = NewAsyncTimer (3.0, -1, 1, OnTimer, 0);
    break;
    If you leave the mouse stationary, when the timer fires after three seconds, the cursor will be still shown as hourglass until the pointer is moved: this is because the function SetMouseCursor (VAL_DEFAULT_CURSOR) is executed by the asynchronous timer thread.
    If the checkbox "main thread" is checked, the function SetMouseCursor will be executed in the context of the main thread of the application and in this case the mouse cursor will be updated immediately.
    GetCtrlVal(panel, PANEL_CHK_WA, &UseWorkaround);
    if (! UseWorkaround) {
    SetMouseCursor (VAL_DEFAULT_CURSOR); // call in Asynchronous Timer thread
    else {
    PostDeferredCall (DeferredCB, 0); // call in main thread
    static void CVICALLBACK DeferredCB (void *callbackData)
    SetMouseCursor (VAL_DEFAULT_CURSOR);

    Hi,
    Based on the documentation for function SetMouseCursor, i think this is a bug.
    But, anyway, over the years i found that direct access to the GUI from multiple threads is not a good idea.
    Although CVI is working good in this way most of the times. I do not recommend this way. (especially for long-running applications)
    It takes a bit more coding, but leads to more stable program in long term.
    I hope this helps, but I'm sorry for my English.

  • No mouse cursor in Airplay

         I have a few accounts on my Mac (Mavericks) that I use to train, operating my Mac with Airplay mirroring for demonstration.  While in my primary account, Airplay (AppleTV3) works fine.  Until recently it also worked fine while in my other accounts (all Admins).
         About a month ago, Airplay with the secondary accounts no longer shows the mouse cursor.  I can see the effects of the mouse (Dock magnifies, apps still open, etc.), but I can't see the actual cursor moving around the screen.  My primary account continues to show the cursor during Airplay.
        I created a new user account (Admin), and the new user account also is missing the cursor during Airplay.  Updated all software, restored the AppleTV.  Thought about rebuilding plists, but don't understand why a brand new user account would still have problems.
         Any ideas?
         Bill

    Any Solutions?
    I have the exact same issue.  My primary account has a cursor no problem.  I even went and bought a new AppleTV3 instead of my AppleTV2 and still same issue.
