MOVED: Multiplier 9 with high HTT on MSI NEO4 bugged?

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner. This is the correct area for overclocking stuff. Please take note of that in the future.

I have exactly the same problem. No problem with no OC, MemTest-86 and Prime95 ok.
I saw a excellent article on anandtech.com:  http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=1497607&enterthread=y
First I tries to detect the max HTT/FSB. According to this article I put the CPU multi to 6, the memory to SPD, 2T and memoryclock to 100.
HTT to 4.0. CPU spread spectrum, PCI-e spread spectrum and SATA to disabled. Vcore 1.50V and Vmem 2.60V
FSB 200 en 210 ok. Then FSB 220 the BIOS doesn't start anymore. THe power- and the HDD-led lights continuous and no image on the screen.
I have to reset the BIOS with the button on the board to get back to normal.
I haven't tried Clockgen. As soon as I have results a report back.
My system specs:

  • Multiplier 9 with high HTT on MSI NEO4 bugged?

    Hi guys,
I have a strange problem with this board.
    First my system:
    3000+ winnie (No sub-zero bug!)
    MSI NEO4 Platinum (Bios 1.2B)
    2x512MB GSKILL PC4400
I can run prime stable at 300x9 (180MHz devider).
Under the prometeia I have the oppurtunity to go further.
I hit the 322x9 =2900MHz also prime stable.
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~famchow/A64_3.../Prime_2.90.JPG
But after some time, on every moment it give me a BSOD and reboot.
In the bios a max. can set 310MHz in bios to get windows booted, higher I can boot in the bios but reboot before the windows loading screen.
    I tryed every settings HTT X1 , 2, 3 and the bandwidth 16/16 8/8. Still nogo.
BUT, when I use MP8, I can boot into windows with HTT 330MHz!!!...
Is this a bios problem or something else?? Maybe this is something for the MSI bios engineers.
    THnx
    BTW:
to MSI engineers: Check the memory timings settings.
Read preamble, Max async and Trc /Tfrc arent correct when setting. I checked this with A64 tweaker in windows.

I have exactly the same problem. No problem with no OC, MemTest-86 and Prime95 ok.

  • Dual channel with 4 slots on MSI Neo4 Platinum

I read from the booklet that the dual channel on the MSI neo4 platinum will only run at 333mhz when using the 4 slots with dual sided chips on the Dimms.
Anyone knows if there's a way to run them dual channel at 400mhz.
    Here's the setup:
    MSI Neo4 Platinum
    FX-53
    2gig (4x512mb) Mushkin special 2-2-2 PC3200
    thanks in advance,
    Marc.

Yes, you get better performance with 1T compared with 2T - check with Sandra mem.benchmark.
A note for the above: that is for the same timing modules. But
2-2-2-x 2T would be faster then 3-3-3-x 1T,this is important to realize when considering 2GB.
4x512 2-2-2-x at 2T would be faster or as fast as 2x1GB 3-3-3-x at 1T and alot of the 1GB modules out there don't have fast timings.

Sorry I was looking at the wrong board (G41M-P33 Combo)
Both boards support up to 4GB according to support site, and share the same PCB by the look of it, the only difference seems to be the HDMI and DVI-D ports.
It looks like the P33 has a sticker over the board model but this may be just edited in the photo.

Ah I see, my P33 board is missing the sticker that was over the original printing of the board,
the specs of the P33 does say 8GB max and the E43 says 4GB max, hmm.. the P33 has an upgrade yet downgrade with less output options
Thank you for all your help!! the missing sticker was the confusion :-)

    msi neo4 + 3500 winchester can't overclock

    Hello All,
I'm a real newbie when it comes to overclocking.  I spent some time reading through various technical threads from various forums before I decided to tweak my newly built system.  Found an article by "Some1ne" on overclocking with a NEO4 Platinum and found it to be quite useful.  Last night was the first time I went through with the tweakis and probably didn't do it right or at least get the best possible performance from my components.  Below was what I did from the bios (1.2v) to the best of my knowledge without the system failing to post or crash when running programs or playing games.  Other than 3dmark05, I haven't use any other programs to benchmark the hardware's performance.
    FSB:   225 MHz
    Memclock Index:  200 MHz
CL2-3-3-5 all other settings on auto
    Memory voltage:  2.85V
    Chipset voltage:  default
    CPU VID:  1.45V
    CPU Voltage:  6.6% OverVID
    CPU multiplier:  11x
    HTT multiplier:  4x
    Aggressive Timing:  disabled
    All "... Spread" settings:  disabled
    3DMark05:  5800+ (don't remember the exact score)
With the current setup I have, can someone give me some advice on how I can better tweak my system?  Thanks!

  • MSI Neo4 Platinum with MSI GF6600GT PCI-e Freezes on games

I'm having this serious problem that my new build system freezes on games. Sometimes I can play for a few hours and sometimes I can play only a few minutes before the system freezes completely. Only a hardware reset helps in this case.
    This is my hardware setup:
    MSI Neo4 Platinum
    MSI GF6600GT PCI-e
    2 x 512MB DDR400 memory(in dual mode)
    AMD 3200+ 64-bit processor
    Sound Blaster Audigy
    DVD Writer
    Floppy
    I'm using Windows XP SP2
    What I tryd:
Tested with other RAM modules, same trouble
    Reinstalled windows xp, same trouble
Tryd all kind of driver versions, same trouble
Flashed bios to 1.9, same trouble
Put a Zalman Cooler on the Video card (temperature now between 40 and 60 degrees in games instead of 80-100 degrees), same trouble
This is where my questions come:
There are two hardware components I cannot switch to try:
The mainboard and the Video card. Whitch one is most likely to be broken??
I have read in the manual of the mainboard that the PSU should have at least 18A on the 12+ signal. My PSU only haves 15A there. While I doubt this results in problems like this I still like to know if it does!
Please help me out on this one!

Have tried older drivers for you GFX, I find the late 6XXX work better for most games. You mite want to check the system is stable with:
    Prime95, Memtest86, 3D mark 03 & 05.
You mite be having the same problems as "easlern", his games would lock up. This was due to to a problem with onboard sound Sound Blaster.

At that moment I didn't even know what was actually on my board, but I knew it was a generic card I was probably never going to use anyway, and I didn't recall getting any sound card updates for this board. So I looked in device manager, and bingo: AC97 device under multimedia devices.      I immediately did two things to completely eliminate the rascal: updated the driver for it and promptly went to BIOS and disabled the sucker. Also disabled SATA group 2 (slots 3 and 4), the Marvell LAN because I only use one ethernet anyway (the nVidia one, which from what I was reading, was probably the more robust of the two), both RAID controllers (actually I had disabled them earlier to skip the annoying RAID setup screen), and put the PCIe bus back to 100MHz (rogue: I was wondering about possible damage over time with this too high too, so I was glad to try setting it back to normal!) Also ran Driver Cleaner to rip out the detonators even though I was putting in another nVidia, and then put in the 6800GT and installed drivers. (In case you were interested, my 3dMark05 score went from 3511 under the 6600GT to 4939 under the 6800GT! I now run in 1280x1024 at max effects and I'm completely spoiled in one night already!   )
Anyway, one of these myriad, desperate attempts must have worked because I get neither audio stutters (should have been a freaking clue in the first place, duh!) nor lock ups.
Since this is the first PC I've built, I was certain I had to have screwed something up hardware-wise or found some combination that had incompatibilities. If it WAS just the freaking sound card driver I'm going to leave this place in shame and never post again!    In my defense, the MSI Update utility didn't show any updated sound drivers for me, and I had assumed it was being pre-empted by my SB Live in any case.
I was convinced this problem was (if it is indeed gone) a video card issue but I can't say it ever was without putting the 6600 back in and running for several hours. I'm going to bet it was the AC97 though because nVidia boards have always been fantastic for me, I haven't had any actual motherboard issues, my RAM and CPU are just fine, and Win2k has never let me down.
Don't assume anything, though, I've learned.
One thing to note: when I was checking out the AC97, I noticed it was *sharing* IRQ 20 with the nForce NIC detector (might have a different name, I can't remember right now). Apparently this is a capability of Win2k to share IRQs but it kind of added to my suspicions anyway.
I'll let you know how the next few sessions go and whether this issue is still an issue

What kind of monitor, how is it connected and does it use calibration software.  I've seen this with Samsung (and some OEM brands made by Samsung) monitors, which use Magictune, connected to the DVI port.  Basically Magictune is crap ands clobbers the monitor's EDID info so that it switches to the VGA port - you can check this by plugging in the VGA cable.  Depending on the monitor, it can cause permanent damage to the monitor's firmware which requires a firmware re-burn... or as apparently in your case, temporary damage which is fixed with a reboot.  The only solution is to get a newer version of Magictune.. or dump it completely.

They are all good heatsinks, I do not think you will go wrong with any of them.
As for the BIOS, the difference is Award vs Phoenix. I use mobos from Abit, ASUS, and MSI, you get used to them, if you can get though one BIOS, you will have little trouble getting used to the other.
As for moving over from "The Dark Side of the Force" over to AMD, welcome to the other side, you will love it and never look back.

  • [AMD] MSI Neo4-f 3500+ overclock settings

    I have the following setup...
    MSI K8N Neo4-F
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Antec Sonata II with 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 PSU
PowerColor ATI Radeon X800 GT 256MB
    100GB Maxtor SATA drive
    CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM (TWINX1024-3200C2PT)
I have been trying to set up my BIOS settings to achieve a nice balance between performance and stability.  I am not seeing great performance at this time (tons of HD paging and slow bootup and application launch times) and when I try to boost the settings at all the system becomes unstable.  Wondering if anyone out there has a similar setup to me and can help me achieve some better performance at a light overclock setting.  There are so many BIOS settings it is difficult to find a good combination which works.
    Thanks in advance.

    Bekoz -
Hello.  I have the exact same motherboard, cpu, and memory as you!  I'm having no luck with the overclocking and all but gave up.  The best I could get is going from 2.2 stock on the venice 3500+ to 2.4 equiv. to a 3800+.  Please see my old post from another forum below.  I'm wondering since we have the same setup what the best is that you have achieved.  Thanx!!!
    Hi All -
I'm kinda new to the planet and to actually trying to OC my system but have been reading on this subject for several weeks now and following the guidelines and multiple threads here. I'm not having the best of luck though.  I've been messing all weekend with the overclocking on my MSI Neo4-f board.  I think it either is a crappy board for OC'ing (would like an ASUS A8N SLI deluxe which I hear is good for OC) or I'm not doing something right.  I had no luck with the 1.9 bios (couldn't get it over 240HTT without something going wrong) and flashed back to 1.6 cuz I heard this is a better bios to OC.  I can't get it to post with an HTT over 250 now even though it is 10 better than with the 1.9.  I've tried changing the memory timings from 1T to 2T and CAS from 2 to 2.5 (corsair suggests 2-3-3-6 1T and 2.75V for AMD platforms) and changing the volts and divider.  I originally was running memory at 2.5-3-3-6 2T but had better PC Mark #'s with the 2-3-3-6 1T.  I also messed with the cpu volts and multiplier, as well as the chipset voltage all in different varieties and the best I could get out of my Athlon 64 3500+ venice was only 2.4ghz from the stock 2.2ghz!!!  Not too good compared to what I've read others have achieved here with an Athlon 64 3500+.
    Here's my system specs:
    -MSI K8N Neo4-F motherboard with 1.6 bios
-Athlon 64 3500+ Venice with ThermalTake Venus 12 fan and artic silver 3
-1gig Corsair XMS TwinX1024 Dual Channel PC3200 Platinum (2x512) with suggested timings 2-3-3-6 at 2.75 volts
    -EVGA 6800GT OC'ed at 416mhz core and 1.134ghz memory
-500W p.s. with air-cooled case and two fans
    -XP (32 bit) OS
Here's my settings in the BIOS right now where my system is stable (let me know if something jumps out at you as being screwed up or not normal):
    -Memory Divider / speed = 166 (from 200 stock)
-Memory timings = 2-3-3-6 at 2.75volts and 1T (dual channel in slots 1 & 2 for paired memory)
    -HTT / FSB = 240
    -HT multiplier = 4x (960 HT)
    -CPU ratio / multiplier = 10x (2.4ghz CPU from 2.2)
-VCORE = 1.45v (using 1.4 plus 3.3% over option) for a total of 1.45 volts
    -Memory = 2.75v
    -Chipset NF4 = 1.5v
    -Cool & Quiet Disabled
    -CPU Spread Spectrum Disabled
    -Aggressive Timing Disabled
I've done the CPU-ID, Memtest, Prime 95, and Super PI tests for quite a while and everything seems stable at these settings now.  I got some higher HTT's and cpu multipliers (10.5x) but system either wouldn't post or windows wouldn't boot all the way or the tests failed in Prime 95 after a few minutes.  Under load, the CPU goes to about 40 degrees and at idle it is at about 32 degrees.
My scores with the above settings are:
    PC Mark 04 = 4684
    3D Mark 01 = 24433
    3D Mark 05 = 5049
Any advice or opinions would be awesome.  I can't figure out what my bottleneck is here.  I think the memory I have is great for overclocking, as is the 3500+ Venice.  Also, how do these scores sound for my specs?  Thanx again for everyone's advice and help!

I have the following motherboard: MSI Neo4-Fi
The system was working fine for 2 months. Now the temperature is instantly increases 10-15 C after starting the PC-Mark test, and increases more in this great heat.
The computer stops on 65-70 C. Everest measure at aux temp 78C, what is this?
I have checked the cooling, and changed it two times.
The computer is on 52 C at start in bios.
Memtest and ghost freezes too after the start.
The computer contains the following particles:
    MSI Neo4-Fi
    Athlon 64 3200+ E6 Rev. Stock cooler
Chenbro Gaming Bomb Case  (1*12cm, 2*8cm fan)
MSI 7600GS VGA Card (Idle temp 36C)
    2x512MB Corsair Value Select PC3200
    Chieftec 410W PSU (Delta Construction)
    WD 320GB Sata HDD
    Plextor Pata DVD+-RW
Could This be a Motherboard failure ??!??

forget about the fan blowing on the mobo, it doesn't lower the CPU temperature. you will have to take the heatsink and fan off the CPU, make sure that the plastic foil doesn't cover the thermal compound. clear whatever thermal paste is left on the CPU and heatsing and reapply a thin layer of thermal paste (arctic silver 5 is prefered). put the heatsink back on the CPU, and make sure that you connect the CPU fan to the mobo.
with 40C in the room, my winchester would never go higher than 52C, overclocked and under full load, with the stock cooling, so you definately have a problem there. if the computer freezes or shuts down, it is because of the thermal sensor from the CPU.

Can anyone help me on :
    1) which slot should I installed my ram in order to run Dual Channel
    2) How do I perform moderate overclocking with this MSI Neo4
    3) which will be recommended HSF for moderate overclocking
    4) Will I experience the 219 BUG when overclocking

1 x 512mb Corsair XMS XL (the one that doesnt work)
    IDE HDD
    Windows XP PRO
BIOS, and every program i run that can see system specs shows that the infact all 3 Sticks
are recognizable. Though...Windows and a program that shows me my physical memory max both
point out i have only 1 gig of RAM!?
It's there, just not being used?
Now the only difference with the XL version and the XL PRO version is the heatspreader,
everything else is the same....so nothing should be conflicting.
Since the computer somehow knows all my part's details..im thinking just because
the new ram doesnt have PRO that it may not be recognized to work together.
Even so...ram should downclock etc with this motherboard...so this stupid little name
issue shouldnt cause the computer to ignore the ram!
I tried switching DIMM slots, no luck.
    Any ideas?

    It's a AMD64 dual memory channel system motherboard/CPU.
    Valid memory populations are
1.stick in one of the channels .(single mode 64bits)
1.stick in each channel .(dual mode 128bits)
    2. sticks in one of the channels.(single mode 64bits)
    4.sticks ,2 in each channel.(dual mode 128bits)
    3 sticks is n/a.
The population on memory controller , it's initialization and modeselection , single/dual mode is chosen by the A64 cpu.
It's been said that later rev.E cpus can autoselect unmatched population between channels (of e.g 3.sticks) and
set the whole memory pool in single mode.
But i have never seen anyone successfully test/run it .
