Movie import

I going to buy a new camera and you can take a 3min movies with it what I wanted to know is if i can import the 3 min movie into imove and use it to make a bigger movie with it

jerzee boy,
What camera are you looking at? Is it a still camera?
Many still cameras that can also take little movies are able to import those little movies along with stills right into iPhoto. From there you can access them in iMovie's media browser.
But, I'm not sure when these feature were added to iPhoto and iMovie though. They may not have been there in iLife '04.
In that case you may be able to do what I used to do with the little movies I shot with my Fuji FinePix A203 in the old days.
I would plug my camera in with USB and then open it in the Finder as if it were a hard drive and drag the AVI movie files to the desktop. I then used QuickTime Pro to convert them to DV that iMovie would recognize.

  • Problem with .mov importing as audio

    Hello!
I'm an old school filmmaker who last did intensive stuff when miniDV was king
Now I find myself at a new job shooting and editing testimonials. Everything was fine for a whole year until I tried to import video from another videographer.
I'm on a Windows 7 machine with Premiere Pro CC v.7.1.0
The note on the footage says shot on Panasonic AF150 (AF100?) 1080 p 60i
The .mov import as audio only. I have tried all kinds of sequence settings to change this. No dice.
Also, the footage has, I believe it's called, "Judder". (I can watch the footage with my QT or VLC player.)
Using a video conversion software I was able to import as MP4. But holy heck do I really have to convert all the clips before I can bring them in?
I am pretty clueless about codecs, which is likely the problem. So a quick explanation on codecs and good places to read up on them would also be extremely helpful.
Here's another issue - the videographer used a fisheye lens (or setting?) for some really nice B roll shots. Unfortunately, they are 4:3 and the  interviews are 16:9! Is this common and ends up being "my problem" or did he goof?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I do have Quicktime installed (which is why I was able to watch it on players outside of Premiere.)
    And the update didn't help

  • Does iMovie alter movies imported at full 1080i (1920x1080) ?

I have a new Sony HDR HC9 1080i camcorder (Mini DV tape).
I heard rumors that iMovie converts movies imported at full 1920x1080 to something like 900 x 480.
Is there any truth to this ugly rumor?
    Thanks.
    Paul

    This not not exactly true.
iMovie imports movies into Event files at the same resolution as their source. If you import 1920x1080 in AVCHD, the event contains an AIC file in 1920x1080.
However, when you use the Event footage in a project, the standard iMovie pre-sets for rendering top out at 960x540 (which is exactly half of 1920x1080). However, by using the Export to QuickTime option, it is possible to render in full 1920x1080.
However, for most people, the 960x540 is good enough. It is about the largest size that can be reasonably streamed over the internet. It is the largest size accepted by the Apple TV. And it easily upscales to 1920x1080 on a high quality receiver/TV with upscaling circuitry. If you are burning a DVD, it will be downscaled to 480i anyway.
As I mentioned, you can export in full 1920x1080 through QuickTime. The issue is "How do I play it?". Some people have reportedly been successful playing these files on a Sony Playstation 3. The new version of Toast allows you to Author BluRay DVDs and you may be able to play them on a BluRay player. You can also play them on your Mac Screen if you have the display resolution set high enough. A 1920x1080 will take up most, if not all, of your computer screen.
As for the Toast BluRay option: It is not practical for me to buy a BluRay burner for USB, since these run over $1000. The SATA BluRay burners are around $300, but my iMac does not have an external SATA port. However, with Toast 9, they claim you can make a BluRay-playable disk from a standard DVD. It holds about 20 minutes of high def content. I am going to burn a BluRay disk using the same project rendered in 1920x1080 and 960x540 to see if I can tell the difference.

  • "File error: unknown file" upon movie import

Got a DVD. Extracted the footage with Mac the ripper. Created an mp4 file with Handbrake. It plays fine in Quicktime at 720 by 480 and 23.98 FPS. I've tried importing it into FCP and I get the error, "File error: unknown file". FCP sequence presents are 24 FPS...I've also tried switching it to 23.98 FPS. I've re-encoded the movie in Quicktime to a .mov file with "DV/DVCPRO - NTSC" compression and it still will not import. Any suggestions?

Tried making an AVI in Handbrake. Handbrake just froze everytime and it would never finish.
I should also note that FFMpeg did not like the footage either and would not convert it to a file of any kind.
So I put the DVD into a consumer DVD player and used my Panasonic DVX100B camera to record the footage in VCR mode. The tape turned out fine.
    BUT...
I am trying to capture the footage from another low end Canon camera. Usually there is no problem. However, with this particular footage from this cursed DVD, I get a "general error" when I try to capture the footage in FCP.
No matter what file format or media is used, this footage will not import into FCP. It must be watermarked to not like FCP.
    Any further suggestions???

  • What's the best workflow for Home Movie Importing and Enjoying?

I'm new to iMovie (and the mac) and have started importing all my home movies from my camcorder into iMovie. I quickly realized that movies take a huge amount of disk space and it may or may not be reasonable to import all my movies and keep them on the hard disk in .dv format. At 12GB/Hour I would need 1.2 Terabytes of storage (plus backup). If that is the best workflow, i'm happy to invest in a few terabytes of storage and back up. But before I do that, I want to check to see if there is a different workflow I should follow given my use case.
    Here is my use case:
I have 100 hours of 8mm and miniDV tapes already and plan to continue creating more.
I want to import them all into the iMac for ease of organization, searching for the clips of interest, and watch them either on my iMAC and also on my TV (via TIVO).
I may do some editing, but this is not a big priority for me at this time. I may do more editing in the distant future when I have more time. My editing for now will be limited to rejecting portions of clips I don't want.
I plan to watch the movies from my iMac on my TV via my TIVO (i've already ordered the Roxio Toast software that I understand I need, per the Tivo web site).
The final piece of my use case is back-up. I'd prefer to back up my movies on disk this way I maintain any editing i've done in case of a disk failure. Depending on what video format is recommended, this may bump me into a RAID multi-terabyte system as both working and automatic backup?
    Here are my questions:
Should I maintain my event library in .dv format? (and bite the bullet on the storage)
Or is the .dv format intended only for temporary editing and users are expected to compress into another format after editing? if so, what format and which tool is recommended? (keeping in mind that I want to view the clips via Tivo and Roxio/Toast).
If I need to byte the bullet and invest in storage, my quick math suggests I'll need about 2 terabytes for the library and 2 more for back up for a total of 4 terabytes!?. Is a RAID system recommended for this? (I was surprised that the Apple store did not carry such a system, so perhaps that is not the best option). What would you recommend?
Anyone out there with a similar use case? I know I've asked a lot of questions here. I'd appreciate any recommendations you may have, even if you cant answer all of them.
    Thank you.

I am in a similar mode, though about half as much existing DV footage.
+Should I maintain my event library in .dv format? (and bite the bullet on the storage)+
    Short answer, yes; long answer:
I did "bite the bullet" since 1T drives are at or just over $100. I'm using a MacBook Pro so I bought an 2 port eSATA card for my cardbus slot ($34), and a 1T eSATA/Firewire/USB drive ($119). I don't plan to "back up" as I am not going to get rid of my Mini DV tapes/vhs/analog tapes, etc. Those will be in an off-site dark cool closet elsewhere. I don't want to do RAID or such as it still puts everything in the same drive unit, in the same location. Basically I'm splitting my video import to two different physical drives. So if lightning, thieves, personal incompetence or whatever strikes, there's more chance it'll only affect one of the drives. I've thought about a Drobo, which you might consider. It is unique device that offers a spin on RAID that offers some advantages.
Everything I read here on these boards suggests that it is best to grab the source video in the original format whenever possible. Since storage is cheap, makes sense to me.
It is likely you wouldn't compress your video unless you were going to edit it. For example if you wanted to make a video of the kids growing up to give the relatives you'd likely end up compressing to burn them a dvd. You would compress if you were going to use MobileMe, YouTube, etc. to post some footage. Whether you watch the video from home, or output to DVD for others, or post online, at least you'll have the source video in it's best possible original format to work with.
This is an aside, but might be useful, I imported one tape at a time, let iM09 create a new event and split per each day. THen I renamed every event based on what the content was before doing the next tape. This really helps later on once yo realize you have a hard drive with 50 hours + of everything in your life on it. I included the year in the name in some way, for example, John's wedding 1994, Hawaii 2000, Hawaii 2004. Then I ended up drag/dropping Hawaii to one event.

  • Problem with movies imported from iPad3

Whenever I import footage into imovie, the footage looks good. When I put that footage into a project it stutters.
It doesnt matter if I specify 24fps or 30fps, the movie judders and stutters.
I do not have this problem with movie footage imported from any other device.
    Any ideas?

  • Movie import Methods

Not sure if this is the best forum for this question, but I couldn't determine a better place.
I have a lot of video content from a number of different cameras and tape formats from the past 50 years.
Some of the footage is from 8mm that were transfered to VHS tape.
Some footage is on DVDs from competitions.
Some footage is on Hi8 tapes.
Some footage is on MiniDV tapes.
Some footage is from various point and shoot cameras in different formats, mpg, avi, mov, etc.
Some footage is on mobile phones.
I want to be able to digitize all of these various footage sources that aren't already digital.
I do not know when I will get around to working on creating movies from the footage, but want it available when I do.
I want the digitized footage to be in the highest quality possible and in a format that will be readible by imovie and possibly FCP.
I currently have imovieHD 6 and imovie 11.
I have an old Dazzle DV converter box. This converts composite/Svideo inoputs to a DV and with firewire to computer.
    What I started:
I went through all the different tapes to make lists of what is on each one.
I used a VHS player with SVideo to Dazzle and imovieHD 6 to import the footage as DV. It's overkill on size/quality but seemed to be the easiest.
I did the same for Hi8, Digital8 tapes.
I used the MiniDV camera directly through firewire to imovieHD6 to capture the footage.
Plan to use Handbrake to convert the DVDs, but not sure what would maintain the best quality and compatiblity.
Also, not sure which point/shoot camera footage formats are compatibile with iMovie/FCP to know if I should convert them.
Once I have all this footage, organizing is the next project.
Is there ways to save metadata to video files like photo files? What to be able to identify what the footage is later. I could just use the filename, but wanted to know if there is other ways.
Due to the size of the video files, I will need to keep them on external drives and not connected to the computer.
What would be a good suggestion to have a footage library and be able to see what footage I have without connecting the drive?
I guess this is a long meassge to state the following:
I want to be able to store all footage on a harddrive for easier access in a format that can be used by imovie/FCP.
I want to be able to scan through to see what footage I have using some sort of management program.
I want to be able to maintain metadata with the footage for identifying what the footage is.
The main problem is I don't work on video projects often anymore.
When one comes up, I cringe because I think of all the work it will take just to prepare the footage first and I end up not doing it.
    Trying to prepare in advance.
Thanks for reading and any suggestions are welcomed,
    bdog

  • Can't Move Imported Skype Recording in GarageBand

    Hi all,
I run GB 10.0.2 on my MBP (OSX 10.9.2).
I record a conversation in Skype using Call Recorder 2.5.8
Whenever I import (drop & drag) a recorded track to GB, I can't move it and it shows a little lock Inside the track.
I can cut parts out of the track, but I can't move it left or right.
I can create a new track and drag it there. But the lock doesn't disappear, and the track won't move.
I've looked in the Locked settings of GB and there (on the left sidebar) it shows as being unlocked.
    How do I solve this?
    thx
    Chris

We would help, if we knew the answer, Chris. I have not worked with Call Recorder 2.5.8. So I cannot check the output format of that program, and we are supposed to try all advice on our own computer before recommending a solution. So I can give you only a general idea what to check for.
What you are describing, is very typical for movie tracks. If you import a video instead of an audio file to GarageBand 10.0, the audio file track will be locked and cannot be moved.  What is the format of the media files you are importing to your GarageBand project?  If you want to edit the audio, try to extract the audio from your recorded conversation with the tools provided by "CallRecorder" and import only the audio, not the video.
If that does not work, use GarageBand to extract the audio from your conversation.  After importing your saved conversation to a track, share the track (Share > Export song to disk) as an audio file to your disk. Then reimport the shared audio and delete the previous track.  Now you should be able to edit the audio properly.

  • Not all of my movies import to iPhoto.

Are you able to tell me which format is accepted please, and how do I convert it so I can bring them in?
Sometimes if I do it one at a time it works but I have many to import.
    Thanks for your help.

There are many, many codecs used to create movies and it is impossible to list all the ones that are not supported.
    AVCHD is definitely not.
avi often is, and installing Perian will add support for more.
But it's easier of you tell us what formats you're shooting...

  • 1080P movie imported into iMovie at optimised 920x540 but is oddly finalised at 1080p?

    Hi.
I have a video shot in 1080p which I imported into iMovie from my camcorder using the optimised setting (920x540px). I edited the movie and now want to finalise it. But I'm wondering why when I click finalise the project it says it's doing so in 1080p?
I assumed when it imported the project it did so at 920x540px and would have disgarded the additional data 1080p data.
    What's happening?
    Thanks!

Just had a thought. Something AppleMan1958 said in another post.
Is this because iMovie also imports the original 1080p file into the Camera Originals folder? So when I finalise the edited project it does with the original 1080p footage?

  • No audio output during movie import

I'm just getting started with building my first movie using HD6 and I can't hear any audio from the movie that I'm capturing. Playing the captured movie back has audio though. What settings do I have wrong? I want to be able to hear the audio track as I'm capturing from my DVcam.

I've got the exact same problem: no audio when importing a movie clip from camera (Canon Elura 65). It plays back just fine once imported, but you can't hear anything when playing through iMovie and while importing.
Is this a HD6 and Mactel problem?

  • Rendering a QT movie import

I've got a screen capturing program that outputs QT movies, and you can use pretty much all the available codecs to output it. But when I bring it into FCE, it wants to render it (OK if you don't move or edit it, which i'm not so much as I'm just using a capture of a flash movie as a guide) - any ideas as to a better output format (using Animation now) or other suggestions ?

unfortunately when I was evaluating snapzpro I found I wasn't able to change the (video was ok) audio settings that didn't require rendering when importing into FCE. I found iShowu was a better choice as it was flexible enough to change the recording settings that didn't involve a render when importing into FCE and it recorded to right format rather post capture re-recording.
