Moving home folders of existing users

Small office, 4 users so manual file moves or individual user settings updates arent a problem.
My question is, how do I go about moving the home directories of our users from one hard drive to another? My thought is just copy their existing home folders to the new location. Make the new location an automount and a home folder location. Then go into WGM and change each users home folder to the new location. Is this going to work? Anyone foresee any issues? Has anyone done anything like this?

Just wanted to post the outcome of this for posterity. Here are the steps I took.
1. Copy off the user home folders
2. Unmount and unshare the user folders
3. Create the raid array
4. Copy all the user data to the raid array
5. Set up the shares and automounts, setting the userdata folder to automount for home folders
6. In WGM, making sure the url for the home folders was appropriate. Since the new sharepoint name matched the original sharepoint name for me, I didnt need to do anything.
7. Updated the ACLs for each user. These were all erased during copy.
Thats it, users were able to log in again. However, one unexpected thing is that iCal shared calendars stopped working. Users are seeing an error when they log in saying their shared calendars are not online. I dont even know how to go about fixing this. I made sure permissions were correct on the shared calendar folders...

  • WGM creates new home folders with _unknown user/group, SA can't change it

    A little background:
    In our school we've got an xserve (about 1.5 yrs old), that was having issues last year. (the OD database pretty much ate itself). in august we did a clean install of 10.5, and updated to 10.5.3 (after suffering through the AFP/OD issues in 10.5.2). Because of the corrupt database from the last server, and the fact that a large number of our accounts have migrated through 4-5 iterations of servers from 9.2 on through 10.4.11, we created all new clean accounts by hand in WGM and moved the user files to the new home folders, changed user and permissions with SA to the new accounts and propogated that info to all the files for each home folder. everything has been going fine since then.
    until this week.
    the issue was discovered when we tried to create a new staff account (we created several accounts last week with no issue). in WGM everything looked fine. it created the account, assigned it to the proper group, and sucessfully created a home folder. the problem however was when we went into SA to change the permissions. we don't need everybody seeing everyone else's files, so we change the default group and everyone permissions to something more appropriate (don't even get me started on that gripe). When you navigate to the new home folder you just created in WGM, it shows the owner as _unknown (read/write) and group _unknown (read only... I think), Everyone (read only). Server Admin refuses to change the user or group. doesn't matter whether you use the 'show users/group' dialog and drag the account, or whether you edit it manually and insert the short name or UID. when you hit save, it stubbornly reverts back to unknown/unknown for user and group. we've tried creating accounts with different templates, no template, different account names and UID's, all with the same result.
    The odd part is that nothing in the OS has changed since we first set it up and created all the users. nothing installed, nothing updated...
    We've stayed at 10.5.3 due to the disaster in one of the updates (10.5.5 I think) that many of our other local districts had with network accounts not being able to see their own library folders due to permission issues, as well as the AFP causing 100% CPU use bug reported with 10.5.5
    A second, probably related issue is that when browsing home folders in Server Admin filesharing, any files our network users create seem to end up assignedunknown/unknown for user and group (as far back as October it seems). After searching around the net most of the day I came across a lot of info about the _unknown user issues for folks upgrading from 10.4, but these are all newly created 10.5 network users (not local) logging in and working in home folders on the server. The original owners can read/write/delete these files as normal.
    Any help would be most appreciated.

    The quick answer: DO A GET INFO ON THE VOLUME WITH THE SHAREPOINTS! if the 'ignore permissions on this volume' box is checked... UNCHECK IT!
    Explaination: not sure how the ignore permissions box got checked, but I don't think it was done directly by human hands. we use Carbon Copy Cloner Ver. 3.something (not sure which at this point) to back up both our data (daily) and server (weekly) drives to remote storage. by striking coincidence, things started saving with _unknown user and group about the same time as crash reporter shows that CCC hosed itself. My guess is that CCC temporarily ignores permissions (as shown in the status when you do a clone) and then resets them to their original state. when it crashed, it looks like they were still set to ignore, so it happily set it back to that state every time it ran after that. not sure why the account creation issue suddenly turned up after so long... In any event, it turns out that if you have sharepoints on a server volume, AND you set the OS to ignore permissions on that volume, BAD things happen (I'm not sure it should even be an option on a shared volume, but that's for the engineering folks to figure out.) .... specifically, the symptoms above. if you login as root (yeah, I know that's something you should never do) and uncheck the ignore permissions box on the volume, then log into WGM, as root (yeah, yeah, I know... even worse) and set ALL of the Directory Administrator accounts to 'do not administer this server', and no change rights for the directory, save those settings, and then set them back to 'administer this server', and FULL rights to change the open directory, save again. and then WAIT until the drives stop going nuts... after that everything works fine.

  • FCP & moving Home Folders

    Guys, I'm on Lion and am contemplating moving my Home Folder from my Boot Drive to my 2nd Internal HD.
    Will this have any adverse and negative effects on any of the Final Cut Studio applications?
    I store all my video files and projects on the 2nd internal HD. Nothing is stored on the Boot drive exept for Applications and my iTunes and iPhoto files.
    The reason for wanting to do this is my wife and I both have separate accounts. Right now, I do not store any documents (Pictures, Movies etc) on my Boot Drive. All of this is stored on my second internal drive.
    Unfortunately, this does not allow my wife and I to separate our documents. She has access to mine and I to hers.
    But I want to be able to only access the docs for the person whose account has been logged in to.

    If you have independant user accounts (even if they are admin) you should not be able to see the documents, pictures, ect. folders of the other person so I don't understand the issue of access.
    Here is a way to deal with it that doesn't involve moving home directories.
    Set up a new account for administration. You'll need it for installations and/or to make system changes. Make sure it has administrator privliges. Remember the password!.
    Then, change your wife's and your accounts to "standard". This will remove ability to override the "no access" as long as you stay within a standard acct. You will have access to shared public and site folders.
    To run backups, install software, etc, log into the machine with the admin account. If nothing else, it makes it harder to screw up the machine as you have to go to a bit extra to make changes.

  • OSX Mavericks Moved Home Folders Permission Problems

    Hi all, this is my first post and I would really appreciate a little help with this issue. 
    I have recently purchased myself a 27" iMac for my photography and have since acquired an SSD to boot from and run my apps.  Having been a custom build PC fanatic for years, I simply could no longer put up with a 7200rpm mechanical drive again.
    My issue is this.
    Since having moved my wife's and I's home folder to an alternative drive, other than the SSD boot drive, the permissions seem to have gone wrong.
    Basically, I have 3 accounts on the iMac, Me (peter) standard user, My wife (dimitra) standard user and the admin account (peter xxxxx admin).  The admin account home directory resides on the boot drive and the other two are in a User folder on the internal HDD supplied with the iMac.  When either standard user logs in they have read only rights into each others accounts.  I want the permissions on the accounts to be back to how they were on the internal HDD.  ie when my wife and i logon in we can't see into each others home folders.
    I hope this makes sense.  Help would be greatly appreciated.:confused:

    To make sure I'm understanding correctly, you both want read/write access to each others user files from within your user?
    If that's the case, the easiest way to do it would be:
    In User Peter (standard), open finder, right click (or control+click if you don't have right click enabled) on your home folder and choose "Get Info" then click the lock in the bottom right hand side of this screen. This will ask for your password, put it in. You should see a section at the bottom entitled, "sharing and permissions." You may need to click the triangle to the left of that to reveal the box beneath it. You now have 2 options here.
    1) If you two are the only users of this machine and you don't intend to add anyone else, you can change the "everyone" permissions to "Read & Write." Once this is selected, click the cogwheel in the lower left and choose "apply to enclosed items." This will give every user account on the machine read & write access to that home folder and everything in it. Apply the same steps with user Dimitra (standard).
    2) If you intend to add more user accounts that you don't want to have access to these files:
    Still go through the right click -> get info -> unlock padlock, but instead of changing "everyone", click the "+" button in the lower left, and choose the other user (i.e. Peter will setup Dimitra and vice versa). Then, when that user appears in the list, give them read & write access and apply to enclosed items.
    If giving access to another user is not what you intend to do, please help by clarifying your intent.

    Edit: Reread your initial post, and it sounds like you're trying to remove read/write permissions. Follow the same steps above, except instead of choosing "read & write" for their user, choose "No access" and apply to enclosed items.

  • Moving Home folders onto external HDD, what's the right way to do it?

    At the moment I have my network accounts on the Server's boot disk, but I want to move them onto an external disk.
    I was thinking I should rsync the Users folder with the external, but do I then have to edit each account in Workgroup Manager to point to the external Home folders?
    I don't have many accounts so I don't mind doing it that way, or maybe there is an easier way? I want to get this right before I start, hence why I'm asking for help.

    What follows assumes that you have a proper OD setup and are able to copy the users' home folders with permissions intact to the new home directory path. Please note that I haven't done this in a while, so proceed with caution.
    1. Create your new home folder root on your external drive.
    2. In Server Admin:File Sharing, set the new folder a a share point.
    3. In "Share Point," check "Enable Automount" and click the "Edit" button.
    4. Set the protocol to AFP and click "Use for: User home folders and group folders," and click ok (diradmin pw will likely be needed).
    5. Optionally, click "Enable Spotlight Searching."
    6. I think AFP guest access may be required in "Protocol Options."
    7. Copy your users' folders to the new path (with your preferred mechanism. cp -p might work too).
    At this point, the new path should be visible in Workgroup Manager in the "Home" tab. You should be able to select multiple users from the list and apply the new path simultaneously. However, I suggest testing this on one account first - preferable not your CEO's.

  • Accesing Home folders of other users via an Admin User

    Hello all, the macs at where I work are divided into two hardrives a Mac HD and a Media Drive where all video projects are to be save. Some people continue to save to the Mac HD causing the computers to crash. I am trying to look through home folders via Go Home > MAC HD > Users > Username > Movies when i reach the restircted folder.
    How can This be changed?

    Select the folder you can't access in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu. Under Ownership & Permissions, change the owner to yourself and group to admin, set the permissions so that the group has Read & Write access to the folder, and then change the ownership back to its original setting. This should not be done on items outside of account home folders.

  • Networked Home Folders for Linux users

    Is this possible in OS X server? I can't find any mention of it anywhere.
    We recently acquired a group of animators who work in linux and would like their home folders remoted. i would also like to get them sucked into the same OD user structure to avoid multiple logins and such.
    Is this possible and does anyone know of any resources to help?

    All is possible with openLDAP (i.e. OD)!
    So you want linux people to authenticate against OD, and have their home folders hosted by a Mac (or a linux box?)
    I can tell you how I set up my Fedora 8 machine to authenticate against OD:
    1. run authconfig utility as root and select LDAP as a source of authentication info. Since OD uses Kerberos you also want to select the Kerberos option.
    2. enter all your OD info (ip, base to search, TLS or not etc).
    authconfig should update /etc/nsswitch.conf to look to ldap for name services and it should give you a working /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/openldap/ldap.conf. You may need to make some changes by hand.
    restart xserver (logout or reboot) and it should just work.
    If your home folders are on the linux box you will need to set an NFS option so that OS X will properly mount your NFS export.
    1. make sure linux machine has "insecure" option in its /etc/exports file and is exporting to samesubnet as your Macs.

  • Multiple users in a class room enviroment / deleting home folders after use

    Hi,
    I'm administrating a class room environment, where my students log on using Active Directory accounts. I would like to clean up the home folders after the users log out, so their profiles would be reseted when they log in next time. Is there any way to achieve this?

    The usual way is :-
    Create an account say "default".
    Login with "default" and set up that account exactly how you want all the users to get. For example dock settings and browser home page etc.
    Tidy up the account, empty the trash, delete recent servers, clear browser caches etc.
    Login as root
    Delete the keychain of the "default" account.
    Copy all the home folders of default to /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj
    Run repair permissions
    Now all new users will get these home folders and settings when they logon.
    Now all you have to do is use a script that deletes the home folders of a students when they logout
    so they then get the default set when they login again.
    Here is an example of one :-

    rm -r /Users/$1
    N.B. OS X uses the variable $1 for the currently logged in user.
    The easiest way to get this running when they logout out, is to use Mike Bombich's loginwindow manager. It complains a bit when you open it to set it up, but it still does the job with login and logout scripts.

  • Giving ad users mac home folders

    I'm going in to set up home folders for AD users tomorrow. I've been reading up on it but have a couple of questions. I'll be setting up the "holy trinity" AD for user authentication, several OSX servers for home folders and another OSX server for managed preferences.
    Tech article 107943 says to:
    On the AFP Server serving the home directories, bind the server to the AD domain, and set up the share point and user homes.
    Do they have to be Automounts? This article and Joel Rennich's AD/OD Integration doesn't mention Automounts. Any opinions on that?

    In Active Directory, edit the user's profile to set up her home folder so that it is mapped to an unused drive letter, with the path set to:
    \serversharepointhomedirectory
    I am not at all familiar with that setting. Does anyone have a screen shot or step by step instructions?

    Hi Jmca, I'm not sure about the answer to the first question but the second one should be on the AD domain controller select the user you want to edit and select properties, and it's on the profile tab under Home Folder. THe syntax I'd say is a bit misleading as in my experience it should be \\server\sharepoint\homedirectory

  • Home Folders Not being Created Correctly

    I'm having some sort of major issue with my directory and/or afp setup.
    I'm trying to create new users and the home folder won't be created at all. If I change the permissions (give write access to the user's group) on the root of the share that hosts the home folders it will create one but it is mangled. The home folder only conatins a Library and Desktop Folder. Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public, and Sites are missing. Also the permissions on this newly created home are mangled being 700 instead of 755.
    All Existing Users are functioning okay but creating new home folders is broken. It has been a while since I've needed to create new users. I'm worried it may be hard to isolate the cause and effect. I have done software updates 10.4.6 and now 10.4.7. Also I changed this machine to handle local DNS.
    Any Ideas?

    We also have this problem, and before I go and re-edit the home folder entries for each of our 600-odd users, I'd appreciate if you could confirm that this solution is going to work for me...
    Troubleshooting another problem, we applied the x.4.6 update about the same time as the Network Mounts were turned off then a restart and turned back on again. A bad combination.
    Faced with a Monday morning "None of the students can log in" crisis ("you are unable to log in to the user account "username" at this time..."), and thinking that the problem had been caused by my turning the network mounts off, I discovered that student mount points now show (in WM's Home tab) as "afp://10.224.96.2/Students" where they used to be "afp://mainserver.westlandhigh.school.nz/Students".
    The easy fix to the problem (not knowing about artnum 303697 at that point) was to reassign the home folders to the 10.224.96.2 home. (when you don't know what to do, you do what you know how to do). This got the users happily working again, although there were all sorts of strange problems relating to disk quotas that some users had to work through.
    a few days later the log entries about DNS were noted, artnum 303697 applied, and changeip fixed those things. hostname responds correctly as mainserver.westlandhigh.school.nz. Everything ran reasonably well for the next couple of months, although the AFP/CPU hogging problem mysteriously appeared...
    x.4.7 seems to have solved the AFP/CPU hogging, but now we've discovered a problem creating home folders for new users.
    Tim's fix on 3rd August shed some light... An interesting quirk of using Presets is that we still have a Student preset that puts the FQDN name in the home folders list. So we can leave the FQDN home folder selected, click Create Home Now, and on Save, the folder is created. But the student can't login: "you are unable to log in to..."
    Change the mount point to the IP number, Save, and it almost works - the system tells the user they are already logged in to another computer... Selecting Allow simultaneous login from Advanced solves this problem, but leaves the system open for the student to attempt to log in twice, with the potential for havoc there. It's also not a wonderful work around as the other staff who sometimes enter new users are likely to miss one or more of the extra steps...
    I guess that I'm going to have to turn Network Mounts off in Sharing, and then turn them on again to get the right set of mount points showing in Accounts/Home, and then work my way back through all the students and point them back to the FQDN mountpoint again?
    Is it likely to be worth the pain? Will it cause some other problem to arise? Is there an easier way?

  • Have Home folders Eric and Eric 1 due to problems with Migration Assistant

    I have duplicate Home folders for my user accounts after trying several times to copy user data from my old MacBook to my new MacBook Pro. I have deleted the folders labeled "from old Mac" and the non-active Eric folder that were the duplicates from failed migrations. Essentially, I have the short name user Eric but Home folder named Eric 1. The short name is, of course correct, but Mac OS always appends numbers to duplicate folders when creating them and in this case you can't change the folder name to reflect the user name.
    There are a number of KB articles detailing how to rename or add new User accounts, but I don't need to do that; I just want my Home folders to not have the appended 1s in their names. Is this fixable without erasing the drive and reinstalling / migrating all over again?

    Assuming you have everything backed up, I think you could try the following steps to change your home folder name from *Eric 1* to Eric:
    Proceed with the first three steps advised by the [KB article|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1428] mentioned earlier:
    For Mac OS X 10.5 or later
    1. [Enable the root user|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528].
    2. Log in as root.
    3. Navigate to the /Users folder.
    If the inactive Eric folder has not yet been deleted, either delete it now, or rename it to something like Eric.old.
    Rename the *Eric 1* folder to Eric.
    Still logged in as root, go to System Preferences>Accounts, control-click on the Eric account, and click Advanced Options. On the next screen, change the Home Directory field from */Users/Eric 1* to /Users/Eric, and then click OK.
    Then restart, and try to log in normally as Eric. If all goes well, disable the root account.

    Yes it will work.  I've done it for a few users in my small office.  As with anything, there are quirks that you may or may not experience.  Most quirks are app-related, due to app developers hard-coding absolute paths into their apps for things like temp files (Photoshop).  Strategies for resolving these sorts of quirks can be found via google.  You would probably have seen these quirks already when using server-based home folders for your kids.  If you haven't noticed them, then you're probably fine.
    The tech note you cited should be fine.  It doesn't explicitly say so, but you'll need to enable ssh on your server, at least temporarily, so you can upload your home folder to the server using scp, rsync, etc.  Don't try to copy the files up to the server via Finder.
    Once all your files are transferred to the server and in the right place, make sure to chown them on the server, so they are owned by the userID you created for yourself on the server.
    As with anything this involved, make a good backup of your laptop first.
    Note I have one user that isn't too happy with the responsiveness of the periodic mobile home syncing.  She has about a decade of e-mail in her home folder, probably 50 to 100 emails per day, many with attachments.  Mobile home syncing takes a long time to check and sync this huge tree of itty-bitty files, eevn with server-side file tracking turned on.  The other users are happy.
    The nice thing about mobile home syncing is that when a user "graduates" to an age where they've earned their own laptop, you can change them from a server home user to a mobile home user, with a minimum of fuss.  Also, if you lose or break a laptop, you can add a new replacement laptop to your network, and pull-down a replica of the home folder from the server, with almost no downtime.

    I am about to set up my Mac mini server (Snow Leopard Server). I have one iMac with three user account on it (local), another iMac that we just bought and my MacBook Pro with my admin account on it (Snow Leopard). So all have Snow Leopard.
    What would be the best way to move the three local accounts AND their home folders to the server?
    What would be the best way to make my portable user account into a mobile user account on the server?
    I am planning to create all users on the server (with the same username and passwords etc.) then move the local home folders from the iMac to the server through some direct wired connection. My concern is with this move - will there be permissions mismatch issue? I am sure there will be as the UID would be different for the same accounts (pre-existing and newly created, eventhough their username and passwords are the same).
    Any best practices? strategies?
    Does Apple have any documentation on this specific topic? - that is moving local user accounts and their corresponding home folders onto the server?

    I haven't gotten round to it - but may have an alternative route in the mean time: the brand new 27" iMac just arrived, and rather than doing a full 'migration assistant' setup, I am going to try the following:
    1. on the new iMac: only create a local Admin account, user name totally unrelated with any other account name;
    2. on the server: settle all the network user account settings, portable home directories, managed preferences etc. for each user;
    3. on another computer: log on under the corresponding local user account, and copy one's home folder entirely to an external drive - do not use this machine again under this user account;
    4. on the new iMac: log in as a network user, make sure the home folder and library syncing works as desired, set some preferences (and check that this gets synced to the server drive); copy the parts of the home folder & library for this user from the external drive - wait until it all gets synced back and forth - and check any permissions, preferences whatever issue (the local account on the other computer is available for cross-checking, just don't change any documents or settings on that one)
    5. if all works well on the new iMac: delete this local user account on the other computer.
    6. repeat steps 3-5 for each other computer where this user has a local account (one 'old' iMac, one 13" MB) - will also allow to check and filter any duplicate documents which have accumulated over the different machines.
    7. create the network accounts for this user on the other computers, and check the syncing etc.
    8. repeat for each user (4 in total for us).
    I think this might just work, since the new iMac at present has no accounts - so no possible issues with similar account names & passwords etc - and you keep the 'old' local account on the other machine as a safeguard anyway.
    Any particular thoughts or comments on this proposed process??
    How about permissions: does the copying to an external disk, and then back onto another computers disk solve that??

  • Moving home - need info on existing operator

    Dear forum users,
    I am a BT customer , and I am moving home, from Bermondsey to Tooting (both London postcodes).
    I used the on-line "moving home" link to proceed with the trasnfer, but at some point I had a warning:
    "We can supply phone service at your new address We need to install a new line at your new address. An engineer will need to visit, you can pick a date for the visit before you complete your order.
    We are unable to transfer your existing number to your new address"
    If possible I would like to have more details.
    1. I would like why BT cannot transfer my number to the new address. Is this a technical issue or is it because I changed zone and the numbers in my new place have a different area code?
    2. Is it possible to know if there is a contract active with another operator at the new address? I mean, apart form guessing or opening the previous tennant's post, which I don't want to do?
    I do not want to disclose my new address, but my secret hope is that a BT customer service operator is lurking this forum and will be able to check these details using my cusomer number

    1. BT can only transfer numbers within the same exchange.  If you are moving to a different exchange, you'll get a new number.  Be aware that several different exchanges can share the same STD code, so you need to know the name of the actual exchange.
    2. It's not easy.  Do you know if there's a line there already?  If there is, you may be able to get some useful information by plugging a phone in.  if the line's live, try dialling 17070 and see if you get a recorded message.

  • Install new OS, but use existing User folders

    I'm going to buy a SSD for my Mac Pro. I would like to install a fresh OS on that drive, but use the existing User folders on my HD.
    I assume there's an easy way to do this, but I *suspect* that the install will make default User folders and accounts?
    Any advice?

    If you are the only user of your system you may be able to do this fairly easily.  If there is more than one account it still may be be possible but there's a potential "gotcha".
    If you intend to keep your home dir on a separate drive from your boot ssd, depending on how many of your own apps and data you intend to put on the ssd for faster access you really only need a 60GB to 120GB ssd.  Assume the OS itself will need up to about 25GB of that ssd. 
    Assuming your are the only user then install the new OS on the ssd and create an account with the same account name of the one you had for the original system.  Once that is up and running you can use the standard procedures to move an account to another drive.  In other words use the Account system preferences to modify the account (account's Advanced Options) home dir info to point to your old home dir on the other drive.  In this case you don't have any current home dir to actually move since you intend to use your old one on your other drive.  Now reboot.  Hopefully your reboot will come up using your old home dir.
    The "gotcha" here is the userid.  If you are the only user it should remain 501.  So doing what I suggest above hopefully will work -- "hopefully" in that it has to be assumed your old account also had userid 501.  With more than one account, if your old account wasn't 501 then I think you are in for ownership problems.
    If you try this don't even attempt this without full backups of your original home disk(s).  Best you create a bootable backup of your newly created ssd too so you don't have to reinstall and you can revert it from the backup if something goes wrong.  Doing it this way doesn't write to new ssd cells if you don't have to (I am always concerend about this with ssd's even with possible TRIM or garbage collection).
