Moving users between partitions

I have "User A" on "Partition 1" and "User B" on "Partition 2". Each partition is a startup partition, so the Applications and other root-level folders have some minor differences.
I want to move both Users to "Partition 3" and rename "User B" to "User C". (If possible, I'd like to merge the Applications folders.)
How should that be done?
Thanks,
humanengr

IMO it's a bad idea to share users between different installs if you use both of them. this can create conflicts and confuse the system. what's your reason for doing this? and you definitely should not merge Applications.
that said, if you use just one system, moving user's home directories to a different partition is fairly straightforward. log in as the user in question, copy its home folder to a different partition. then go to system preferences->accounts. unlock the lock, control-click on your user and choose 'advanced options". in the popup enter the new location for the home directory. then log out/in. you should be now using the new home directory and you can delete the old one.
see this link about renaming your user.

  • IMS52 - Moving Users Between Partitions

    Hello,
    We are on
iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 2.09 (built Nov 18 2005)
    libimta.so 5.2 HotFix 2.09 (built 10:35:58, Nov 18 2005)
I understand this is going off of maintenance, but we are tied to this version
based on the portal we are using.
Would like to verify a procedure I've been using to
move users from one partition to another. Over the past year,
I've moved roughly 5000 accts (out of about 57K) using the "mboxutil -r"
command. Out of the 5000, a handful have had issues with 'disappearing'
INBOX - all have been using the MS Outlook mail client.
I asked our portal software support about this and they said this method
was not supported while the user was still had a imap session going and that
mailbox corruption could occur. They pointed me to #1 on page 642 of the
MS Admin Guide - sure enough, it's there and I don't know why I never really
noticed that first part. I was hoping to use this method to move users from
our old SAN to a new one, with the mboxutil running all during the day/night.
So, with this information, I'll probably just move users during the wee hours,
letting them know ahead of time to not use their account during those hours.
    1) Is there anything else I should know about mboxutil rename? To this date,
it's worked well, with the exception of the Outlook email clients.
    2) I came accross the MoveUser command, but that seems more for moving
to another server. However, it sounds like this can be done while the user
is logged on. Is this true?
    Would appreciate your comments.
    Thank you,
    Keith

    1) Is there anything else I should know about mboxutil rename? To this date,
it's worked well, with the exception of the Outlook email clients.Nothing more to add really. There is an existing RFE (request for enhancement) to have the user automatically disconnected from IMAP when a move (mboxutil -r) is performed (RFE #6499681). MS6.3 already provides the ability to disconnect individual IMAP connections (imsconnutil -k) so this would combine the two operations.

is logged on. Is this true?As you say this utility is more for moving users across systems which is a much different operation as the underlying store database doesn't change as it does during a mboxutil -r operation. The idea is that the move can be performed online (the user see's the 'old' account) and when they reconnect they will be connected to the 'new' account.

  • NAC OOB problem - moving users between ports

    Hi,
I have a problem with an OOB deployment I am currently working on: when I move an authenticated OOB client from one switch to another, it remains stuck in the auth VLAN. It seems that NAC doesn't detect the new port correctly.
This is what I did to replicate the issue, in detail:
    1) A computer is connected to port 'a' on switch 'A' (A[a]). The port is automatically changed to auth VLAN and authentication and posture assessment are performed.
    2) The computer passes both, and the port is changed back to the designated Access VLAN. OOB user appears in the Online Users list, and the computer is added to the Discovered (Wired) Clients list. All the detailed information on both pages is correct.
    3) The computer is disconnected. OOB user is removed from the Online Users list, but the computer remains in the Discovered Clients list.
    4) The computer is connected to port 'b' on switch 'B' (B[b]). It is automatically changed to auth VLAN and authentication and posture assessment passes successfully one more time. However, the information in the Discovered Clients list is not updated and, moreover, OOB user appears once again in the Online Users list - but the specified location is port A[a]!
The end result is taht the computer remains stuck in the Auth VLAN and NAC Agent Authentication dialogue keeps popping out.
I tried the reverse scenario (port B[b] to port A[a]) after manually clearing all user and client information, and the result was pretty much the same...
    Thanks,
    Boris

    Faisal,
The configuration includes the following lines (on both switches I used for access):
      snmp-server community *** RW
      snmp-server community *** RO
      snmp-server trap-source Vlan2 (management subnet)
snmp-server location 10.0.0.101 (NAM IP address)
snmp-server enable traps snmp linkdown linkup
snmp-server enable traps mac-notification change move threshold
      snmp-server host 10.0.0.101 version 2c cisco  mac-notification snmp
Also, NAC added the following line on monitored interfaces:
      snmp trap mac-notification change added
Is this all that is required to send MAC-change and MAC-move traps?
I captured SNMP traps with a 'tcpdump' on the NAM and I can confirm it receives traps from both switches, with correct source IP addresses. I will try to look into a "raw" dump to see the exact traps it received...
    Regards,
    Boris

  • Moving files between partitions

i have installed vista as the second operating system. when i am running leopard, i can access the windows drive and copy files to the mac partition. i cannot place files from the mac to the windows partition. it won't accept them, indicating that the drive cannot be changed. i do use a log on with password in vista. also, when operating in vista, i can't see the leopard partition to move files either way. any assistance is welcome, thanks.

quote: How do you move files from windows to the mac partition? :endquote
I formatted the windows partition NTFS. When I'm running MacOSX, the windows partition is shown as another hard drive on the desktop.
To move files, you actually just copy them. Open the NTFS drive, navigate to wherever you like, then drag copy files from the NTFS drive to your MacOSX drive - to some folder like "Documents".
You can't write to the NTFS drive from MacOSX, but you can read.

  • Moving user profiles from Server 2012 with RDS services to User profile disks Server 2012R2

Hello i have a question about moving my C:\users profiles.
My current settings on the servers are:
    AD-Server 2012
    SQL-Server 2012
TS- server with RDS roles (RDwebacces, RDs broker, RD session host) 2012
everything about user profiles is now in C:\Users
My new settings for the server will be:
    AD-ActiveDirectory - server
    SQL-Server
TS1- RDS (RDwebacces, broker, RDS server group management) 2012R2 (I have enabeld userProfileDisks to Filesistem server)
    TS2- RDS(Session host) load balance 2012R2
TS3- RDS (Session host) load balance 2012
FileSistem - server ( here i will have on E: partition the new functionality UserProfileDisks) 2012R2
So is there a way to move profiles from TS - C:\Users to FileSistem - E:\UserProfileDisks
I am new to this so any idea wil be helpful.

    Hi,
If the UPD is configured on the server which holds existing user profiles, just select the option:
store all user settings and data inside the profile disk.
Since you are moving user profiles between different servers, then user profile contents need to be migrated manually.
    Best Regards,
    Amy

  • It stopped sending mail and moving messages between folders, junk messages stopped being moved.

Recently, Thunderbird stopped sending mail and moving messages between folders, junk messages stopped being moved.

Further notes (different user, same problem):
    * This is a problem that started in Thunderbird 32
    * This involves both automatic (filter) moves and manual moves
    * This includes use of keys and hotkeys (the delete key, for example)
    * Restarting Thunderbird does seem to "reset" the problem... for a while. I notice the problem most when either I've been away from the computer/program for a while or when waking a laptop computer from a sleep or hibernation state.

  • UME + AD --- User Based Partitioning

    Hello
We have our SAP Nw Portal 7.01 connected to an AD and we are following the user-based partitioning principle described in this site:
However, we want to split users based on a different attribute of the user being a service user or not. Indeed, we want to split dialogue users between the UME local database and the AD.
Help to find documentation about the user-based partitioning options and available attribute namespaces would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jon

    James,
yes. We want to setup external users in a seperate datastore. From the EP documentation I know it is possible but I do not seem to find any docs on how to set it up.

  • Intel Macs & G5s: Problems when moving projects between them

An earlier post* suggesting complete compatibility between the latest FCP in a G5 and in an Intel Mac may be in error.
We are experiencing continuing crashes using our Intel Mac when we work on projects that were originally either imported or partially rendered in the G5.
It has gotten to the point where we feel we must keep projects completely isolated from each other: Either it is a "G5 project" or it is an "Intel Mac" project. Moving projects back and forth between the two leads to problems such as:
The Intel Mac does not recognize any renders done in the G5...
The Intel Mac crashes when rendering 'G5' projects...
The Intel mac crashes when compressor goes to work to export sequences to mpeg...
The G5 works fine with Intel Mac-originated material: It is only in the Intel Mac where we have these problems.
Both systems are up-to-the minute on their OS, security updates, and FCP versions. We are using variously 720p/30 from the JVC GY-100UA and 1080i/30 from the Sony Z1U.
    Our questions are:
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems moving projects between a G5 and an Intel Mac?
Is anyone moving projects between the two platforms and experiencing NO problems at all? That information would be just as valuable, and very welcome.
Apple FCP development team: Is our experience unique or have you had other reports like this? Any idea what could be causing our problems -- and what we can do to fix them?

    Scott,
    Welcome to the discussions!
I have had no problems moving my G5 projects over to my MP.
You can not move render files between machines.
When you changed systems, did you use Migration Assistant to transfer your files over to your new Mac Pro? You might need to install from the disks in order to achieve native Intel performance. See if you installed Final Cut 5.1 on your G5 then it installed the PPC code... if you put that drive into your Mac Pro or used Migration Assistant to move the app over it is still the PPC code... When you install from the installation disk, Installer determines what system you are installing on (PPC or Intel) and that's what it installs. This goes for all of your "Universal Binary" apps...
In the System Profiler app. under Software/Applications
Final Cut Pro "kind" should be Universal on your MP.
The FCP development team do not read these posts, only users do.

  • Personal Web Sharing trouble with moved / Users ?

Can Personal Web Sharing work when /Users has been moved to another partition? Situation: Apache is running on my Mac OS 10.4.10 system. It will serve my files to a distant computer if I put symlinks to them in /Library/WebServer/Documents (and Personal Web Sharing is on). However, it won't serve the same files from http://my.machine.com/~username -- Console reveals code 301 on attempts these attempts. (Interestingly, nothing appears in Console access_log if Personal Web Sharing is off during an attempt at http://my.machine.com/~username.) All of these makes me guess that Apache is basically OK, that System Preferences Personal Web Sharing knows where to find my personal Sites, but there is some problem when Apache goes for my user directory. Any suggestions?

    Hi--
You need to figure out the full path to your directory on the other partition and add that the file for that user that's in /etc/httpd/users. So, open the Terminal application from your Utilities folder, type "cd", then a space, and drag the "Sites" folder from your home folder to the Terminal window. That'll give you the full path to that file.
Edit your user's config file (you'll need to use sudo) with a text editor like nano:
    <pre class="command">sudo nano /etc/httpd/users/username.conf</pre>
    Look for this line:
    <pre class="command"><Directory "/Users/username/Sites/"></pre>
Change it to reflect the path you saw in the Terminal window. If the partition name has a space in it, be careful, Terminal will escape it:
    <pre class="command">/Volumes/Volume\ Name/username/Sites</pre>
But since it's enclosed in quotes in the Apache config file, you'll want to dump the escape:
    <pre class="command"><Directory "/Volumes/Volume Name/username/Sites/"></pre>
Don't forget to restart the web server.

  • Swapping users between a desktop and a laptop

hi folks. i'm going out of town working for a month. while i'm gone i want to use my wife's ibook and let her use my office desktop mac.
what is the best way to "swap" the users between the two? i would like her to be able to sit down at the desktop mac and have all her settings, docs, etc. just the way she has them on the laptop, and vice versa for me on her ibook. most of the apps are the same.
do i completely wipe both drives? or can i just swap certain files? can i do it with migration assistant?
i can't find anything by searching here or with google, since the "swap file" is something specific and not what i'm looking for.
anyone? i leave in a week. thanks!
iBook & G4 w/ Dual 2G CPU   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   GBs of RAM and TBs of Storage

What I would do is create a new user on each machine. Now just copy files from one machine to another, e.g. from the old user on machine A to the new user on machine B, and from the older user on machine B to the new user on machine A. There are many "sync" applications that can help you automate this process (look on versiontracker).
When you get home, just "sync" again, and presto, you're ready to swap computers.
This is basically a variant of what I do every time I go on a trip. In my situation there is no second user, but there are two computers and I want the portable to take on all the characteristics of my desktop machine at the moment I am about to walk out the door.

  • Moving User's Home Directory from one Xserve to another

Does anyone know the procedure for moving users (Home Directory) from one server to another?
Is there an application that can do this?
    Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I see your problem and I think I will soon have the same one.
I suppose one option would be to delete out the .plist. Then when the user logs in the server should recreate it. If the user had customized it they would of course lose any information.
You could also setup a loginhook that would just run the needed defaults write... and update them as needed. Actually I think that would be the easiest option. The only down side would be making sure every use logs in once before you remove the script.
Hmm I guess another option would be a script that loops through all the users accounts and runs the command as the user. sudo -u usershortname defaults... But I am not sure if this would have to be done on the server it self or if it could be done through a client.
Sorry for the rambling but I am trying to come up with an answer..

  • Error after moving user to another organiz.l unit (Edir)

I am moving users to another org. units.
For 2 users, i keeep seeing the following error in /var/log/datasync/connectors/default.pipeline1.mobility-AppInterface.log:
ERROR [Device_Thread-29] [sync:252] [userID:cn=**,ou=**,o=**] [eventID:] [objectID:] [Sync] Fatal - unable to find folder object for folderId = 2
    Any idea?

If you are moving users around OUs/Orgs then you will need to remove them from the connector, wait for them to vanish, move user in eDirectory, re-add to connector. As far as I'm aware this is a limitation in all Datasync connectors that link to eDirectory.

  • Active Directory Migration Tool Moving Users before groups?

How are permissions to resources granted? By user or by group?
It's been so long I can't actually remember, but I think we moved users and groups together.
The SIDs will change if things are moving to a new domain.  But the migration tool handles that for you.

What are the draw backs of migration users before groups in a interdomain migration? if any
