Mpd: Advantages over other players as single user

Hey everyone,
I installed Archlinux just two weeks ago and I really like it. As amarok2 is not final yet I am at the moment looking for some alternatives (absolutely don't like juk that comes with KDE4) and I've seen in this and other forums that many people are very excited about mpd. So I tried it out myself (but only installed the console client mpc though) and I wonder what the advantages are over other players that you can use, like amarok, without a daemon in the background?
I know that it is a special server-client structure, but since I am the only person using my computer (a laptop) I don't really think that using mpd would be so great for me, but I don't know if I am missing some important point.
For me as the only user of my computer the interface of the actual player and the features of that player count, and with that in mind, amarok is really great for me. Is there anything that I could be excited about, using some mpd-client together with mpd? mpd itself if I understood it correctly is simply supplying the database for the music, but I still need a player with the features I want, which may be inferior to the features I like in amarok.
I hope you understand my point of view, it is not some bashing on mpd, it must be really great if you have some music server running it and you can connect to it with other computers, but does it have any advantages over the normal players on a single user system?

That's the main reason I liked MPD so much while I was using it. I could shut down the computer while it was playing, then when I turn my computer back on, the music starts playing as soon as mpd starts.
The only reason I prefer amarok over mpd is because if I added a song to my filesystem I would have to update the database for mpd to find and play it. I like just browsing files and dragging them into a playlist, which you can't (or couldn't while I was using it) do with mpd.
Sonota has an option to update database on startup
So does ario-svn. In fact, all of the cool features of sonata that aren't typical in mpd clients I asked the developer of ario to implement. He did.

Tried a bunch of different things as per advice on these boards - discovered that there is no hostconfig file.
    Restarted into verbose mode.

I do not have a backup. Should I back up before I try doing a reinstall of the os x?
That's also known as shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted.
It can't hurt, but it's not going to help much.
Camelot: when you say "apps and user content should stay intact" - doesn't sound very definitive. Are there any variables that come into play?
No.. generally it's pretty reliable, but yours is an odd situation. I wouldn't expect to lose any user data, just CYA
I do have a start up disk along with some apps that I created in retrospect many years ago ....(I think it's os x 10.2.8) Can I use this to boot up and then just navigate to my user files so I can get some things done that I need to?
Unlikely. For one have you even tried restoring from your Retrospect backup? (it's not the most reliable system).
Secondly, you can't boot from your Retrospect backup, so you'll need to restore that system to boot from it. Have you got a second disk to restore to (you do NOT want to restore 10.2.x over your 10.4.x system).
in terms of "random deleted files" : not entirely random
Ok, maybe not entire random, but it's also somewhat unknown. You need to have some idea of what files you're trying to restore, but if you haven't got them in a backup where are you going to get them from?
You cannot just take old copies from your 10.2.x system and hope they'll work (in case that's what you're thinking).
The BEST solution is to boot from the 10.4.x installer disk and let it do its thing.
And for what its worth, Unauthorized access attempts, in and of themselves, are not a cause for concern since they were clearly caught by the OS. It's the access attempts that succeed (and are not logged) which are more of an issue.

  • Does TM have any real functional advantages over other solutions?

    Hi All
Looking at possible network backup solutions. Does TM have any real functional advantages over something like SuperDuper? I'm not really looking for an "archive" solution, which is I think how a lot of people perhaps incorrectly view TM, but just something that will allow me to easily recover from corrupt/crashed system - TM seems rather overkill and complex for that?
    Any advice/views appreciated...jeremy

Officially, TM does not work over a network, except via Time Capsule or to another Mac running Leopard on the same local network: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
Some of us are able to use a USB drive attached to an Airport Extreme, or a shared drive on a Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard on the same local network. Some others are using various NAS devices that claim to be TM-compatible, but often with various difficulties.
So if you're set on a network solution, your options with TM are limited.
CarbonCopyCloner does not work to any network destination, and I don't think SD does, either.
Other than that, TM has two main advantages over the "clones:"
Being able to do hourly incremental backups of new and changed items very quickly, it gives you an excellent chance of recovering something that was changed or deleted in error, or that got corrupted. Most other apps, especially CCC and SD, if they're backing-up your entire system, in most cases just aren't practical to run more than once or twice a day.
Second, since every TM backup is, in effect, a full one, you can restore your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any backup, even if it was a previous version of Leopard or Snow Leopard. Many folks have, for example, successfully and easily downgraded from SL back to Leopard when they found they had incompatible apps or other problems.

You probably want to visit the NI web site for more detailed info.
There is an article there regarding the LV compiler, and there are
others there regarding performance of generated code. If you are
talking about performance of the person writing the program, that is a
much more difficult thing to measure, but one of the benefits of LV is
that it has a very simple syntax. For people that need to use the
computer to do measurement tasks, they often need to use a programming
tool. If they know C, Basic, or Fortran, then they might want to
    investigate other NI
products specially built for those languages. If
they don't know a computer language, or if they are a bit rusty, then LV
    often fits the bill.
If it is important to you, you might want to get the evaluation edition
    and learn about it firsthand.

  • NWDI advantages over other Version Management tools

    Hi all,
We have our own customized applications in our landscape. We are not using NWDI.We use an external Version Management tool. I would like to stress out what are the advantages of using NWDI rather than the existing version management tool.I have been questioned many times as to what is the need of NWDI if we are not using Standard SAP packages.
I request all of the members to highlight some major advantages of using NWDI interms of customized applications and thinking about the future
    Thanks,
    Sridar

    Hi,
In Version management tools we can only maintain the versions i.e, backup of our developments. but in NWDI there are four different components for different reasons
1)DTR(Design Time Repository): This is used for version controlling.
2)CMS(Change Management System):Used to transport your source code from different landscape systems.
4)CBS(Central Build Service):Used to Build all the source code which we deployed.
5)SLD(System Landscape Directory):Used to store all the standard business packages required.
hope you understand the difference....for more details plzz check in sdn.
    Regards,
    Anil.

i cannot login to my computer any other way besides single user. i have run FSCK and nothing.
all im trying to do is move files so i dont have to worry about losing all of my music, photos, and documents.

  • W5XX professional users - does win 8 have any advantages over 7?

I expect that many or most W5XX owners use their workstation lappy primarily or entirely for work. I do.  I have 2x 30" monitors, 32 GB ram ( and use it) , and hundreds if not thousands of apps installed, and have probably 20+ open at any given time.
Trying to move to a new HD, I accidentally installed windows 8, and, before going back to 7, decided to try it for a few days.
Like many, i hated it with venom for its unintuativeness (had to google how to close an app, and how to launch an app).   I have used Windows since version 3.1, Unix since SCO, Mac since the Mac 128, and I could not figure how to close an app or launch an app with keyboard and mouse.  I was stunned.
So i did a lot of googling and viewed many tutorials, and got to the point where I could install and run most of the apps I would need.
I quickly realised that ALL metro apps are completely useless for me.  Why would I want skype or IE to take up an entire 30" monitor, not allowing me to work on photoshop or in Eclipse IDE at the same time as chatting?  They are all glorified toy widgets.
I see the value of windows 8 and metro apps on phones and tablets where really simple full screen apps are at home, and most peole spend their time in twitter, FB and looking at their cat pictures, but I cant see any value on the desktop - it just slows me down.  BTW if I want to look at my cat pictures, I fire up lightroom.
So here is the question: metro aside, on the dekstop, are there any features in windows 8 which are an imporevemnt on windows 7?  I.e. is there a reason to stick with 8 which I havent found yet?  Some feature which helps productivity on the desktop, or some W5XX driver which works better on  8?
E.g. I have heard that 8 boots slightly faster than 7. Is this the only adantage?
I rarely use winows search in 7, as I cant stop it from returning hundreds of hits from my hundreds of thousands of emails, instead of the file or contact I was actually looking for.  i assume windows 8 does nothing to help this.

Having used windows 8 for a week, in my oppinion, there are no advantages over windows 7 what so ever, and many disadvantages, including:
need to learn everything from scratch, you even have to google how to close a metro app or how to shutdown.
or you need to spend time turning windows 8 back into windows 7 using various tweaks and start button replacements.
No noticable speed difference in startup or operation (on this machine at least)
If you have a problem, finding help is very difficult - all the solutions posted are for windows 7.  E.g. Its not possible to change the keyboard mapping windows boots with - it always defaults to US keybaord, I want it to default to UK, but no chance to find a solution.
Metro apps suck in every way.  They are noddy, cut down, dummed down apps desiged for the limitations of small, touch screen devices, not desktops with keyboard and mouse.
the windows 8 start screen is an abomoniation for two reasons:
    a) its a huge disctraction or "cognitive burden" to switch from the apps you have open on the desktop, to a complete full screen colour explosion of flasing icons, find what you want, then jump back.  Its a productivity no-no.
    b) I could never find anything using the start screen, I hated it.  e.g. if you want to find an app, you have to look all through every icon - there is no logic or order.  if its not on the first screen, you have to click the mouse on a little apps arrow, which list all apps in a horrible order.  E.g. each MS app is split, os Word is under W, access is under A. I want them all to be grouped together, but you cant.  WIth the old win 7 start menu, when you click on all programs, you get an order list of all the intalled apps which does not change, so is much quicker.
Windows 8 is obvisly designed and optimised for small touch screen devices.  Its a poor experience for desktop.
Lenovo tools have had most of their functionality removed, and put up as metro apps only. No desktop versions.  Much of the functions I actually used is gone, e.g. the abilty to set the battery into lifespan mode, to make it last a lot longer by not charging it to 100% etc.  Now you have to charge it to 100%, and it kills the battery life by comparison.  Windows 8 is deisgned to run off batteries, not mains.
I had to disable the location services service, as it stopps chrome from working (it cant save anything, eg. you cant book mark, you cant install extensions, you cant sync etc).  Once disabled, chrome works again .  it was holding open the file Chrome uses to save its data.  This wasted me half a day - so as self employed, windows 8 has cost me money to get working I would not have had to spend on windows 7.  This is partly due to lenovos shoddy testing - they have a lot of bugs in their SW, bios and drivers which should have been caught at test time, but more so on windows 8 than 7.
In short, I am dissapointed that there are no windows 8 features which are worth moving to windows 8 for, and I deeply regret my decision to try it.  If it hadnnt just taken me 3 days to install and configure all my apps, dev IDEs, VPNs, databases, VMs etc I woud switch back to 7. Those people who say they prefer windows 8, I dont understand why, but good luck to everyone.
I hope this helps other W5xx owners who are considering the same question.
P.s. I installed classic shell, and highly recommend it as a fully featured free windows 7 start menu for windows 8.1.  One person sais they had luck with installing the unsupported windows 7 lenvo apps on widnows 8, but I am rather scared to do this - I am not sure how they will conflict.
Windows 9 is just around the corner, and who knows if this will cripple business users further, or if all the time you spent learning how to use windows 8 will be thrown away if they go back.  One thing is for sure - windows 8 is designed for small touch screen devices, and home users who use social apps and news primarily.  Just look at what apps are availble in the store.

  • What the advantages of having an BAPI over Other data migrations

What the advantages of having an BAPI over Other data migrations

    Th advantages of BAPI
    1. Simple to use (its just an FM)
    2. Not cumbersome like bdc
where we have to record each and every screen
    sequence.
    3. SAP guarantees the consistency
    of bapi in future releases.
One of the big plusses for BAPIs is that the interface and function are not supposed to change. This is a big plus when you do upgrades or hot packs because the transaction can change (format, required inputs etc) which means you then need to update the call transaction.
Some of the BAPIs are better documented and easier to use than others.
You usually need to perform the BAPI that actually does the COMMIT after you call your BAPI.
The Program coding for calling a BAPI is usually cleaner than setting up the screen flow etc for the Call Transaction.
You don't need to worry about special data circumstances interrupting the normal data flow of the screens and causing errors because of that.
BAPIs probably have better performance since they don't do the screen flow processing.
In general if the BAPI exists for the transaction you want to perform and you can figure out how to use it the BAPI is probably the best way to go.
This is just from my experience working with both BAPI and Call Transaction. I have had some very good successes with BAPIs, but very occasionally found that I could not get the BAPI to perform the update I needed.
Refer the transaction BAPI for detail information.

Or you can use FM SD_CUSTOMER_MAINTAIN_ALL
    what is BAPI?
BAPI stands for Business API(Application Program Interface).
A BAPI is remotely enabled function module
ie it can be invoked from remote programs like standalone JAVA programs, web interface etc..
You can make your function module remotely enabled in attributes of Function module but
A BAPI are standard SAP function modules provided by SAP for remote access.
Also they are part of Businees Objest Repository(BOR).
BAPI are RFC enabled function modules. the difference between RFc and BAPI are business objects.
You create business objects and those are then registered in your BOR (Business Object Repository)
which can be accessed outside the SAP system by using some other applications (Non-SAP) such as VB or JAVA.
In this case u only specify the business object and its method from external system
in BAPI there is no direct system call. while RFC are direct system call.
Some BAPIs provide basic functions and can be used for most SAP business object types.
These BAPIs should be implemented the same for all business object types.
Standardized BAPIs are easier to use and prevent users having to deal with a number of different BAPIs.
Whenever possible, a standardized BAPI must be used in preference to an individual BAPI.
The following standardized BAPIs are provided:
Reading instances of SAP business objects
GetList ( ) With the BAPI GetList you can select a range of object key values,
for example, company codes and material numbers.
The BAPI GetList() is a class method.
GetDetail() With the BAPI GetDetail() the details of an instance of a business object type are retrieved
and returned to the calling program.
The instance is identified via its key.
The BAPI GetDetail() is an instance method.
BAPIs that can create, change or delete instances of a business object type
The following BAPIs of the same object type have to be programmed
so that they can be called several times within one transaction.
For example, if, after sales order 1 has been created, a second sales order 2 is created in the same transaction,
the second BAPI call must not affect the consistency of the sales order 2.
After completing the transaction with a COMMIT WORK, both the orders are saved consistently in the database.
    Create( ) and CreateFromData! ( )
The BAPIs Create() and CreateFromData() create an instance of an SAP business object type,
for example, a purchase order. These BAPIs are class methods.
    Change( )
The BAPI Change() changes an existing instance of an SAP business object type,
for example, a purchase order. The BAPI Change () is an instance method.
Delete( ) and Undelete( ) The BAPI Delete() deletes an instance of an SAP business object type from the database
    or sets a deletion flag.
The BAPI Undelete() removes a deletion flag. These BAPIs are instance methods.
Cancel ( ) Unlike the BAPI Delete(), the BAPI Cancel() cancels an instance of a business object type.
The instance to be cancelled remains in the database and an additional instance is created
and this is the one that is actually canceled. The Cancel() BAPI is an instance method.
    Add<subobject> ( ) and Remove<subobject> ( ) The BAPI Add<subobject> adds a subobject to an existing object inst!
ance and the BAPI and Remove<subobject> removes a subobject from an object instance.
    These BAPIs are instance methods.

Java Connector(JCO) can call not only BAPI's but also the function modules which are remotely enabled..
BAPI's as i said earlier are remotely enabled function modules..
Hence, JCO can call also BAPI's(n not only BAPI's as u mentioned).
Check the following BDC over BAPI
The steps to be followed are :
    1. Find out the relevant BAPI (BAPI_SALESORDER_CHANGE for VA02).
    [for VA01 use BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2]
    2. Create a Z program and call the BAPi (same as a Funtion module call).
    2. Now, if you see this BAPi, it has
    -> Importing structures.
eg: SALESDOCUMENT: this will take the Sales order header data as input.
    -> Tables parameters:
eg: ORDER_ITEM_IN: this will take the line item data as input.
    Note :
Only specify fields that should be changed
Select these fields by entering an X in the checkboxes
Enter a U in the UPDATEFLAG field
Always specify key fields when changing the data, including in the checkboxes
The configuration is an exception here. If this needs to be changed, you need to complete it again fully.
Maintain quantities and dates in the schedule line data
    Possible UPDATEFLAGS:
    U = change
    D = delete
    I = add
    Example
    1. Delete the whole order
    2. Delete order items
    3. Change the order
    4. Change the configuration
    Notes
    1. Minimum entry:
You must enter the order number in the SALESDOCUMENT structure.
You must always enter key fields for changes.
You must always specify the update indicator in the ORDER_HEADER_INX.
    2. Commit control:
The BAPI does not run a database Commit, which means that the application must trigger the Commit
so that the changes are read to the database. To do this, use the BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT BAPI.
For further details... refer to the Function Module documentation for the BAPi.

  • Advantages/Disadvantages of having 2 Apple ID's with iCloud - Single User

A separate Apple ID for iCloud and a separate Apple ID for Store Purchases - 1 Mac and 1 iPhone - both to 1 Single User.
I'm both curious and interested at the same time..
And would it even be useful? Or should I just stick to using the same Apple ID because in creating another Apple ID, I'd be giving myself more of a hassle when it comes to backing up/restoring?
I'm still running my mind around this one... (cos it only seems to benefit users who are all iDevice holders living under the same roof etc.. with 1 root Apple ID and multiple iCloud Apple ID's per individual)
I am relatively new to Apple and am exploring this idea keenly.
What are the Advantages/Disadvantages for this particular scenario??
Thanks a lot to those who kindly contribute your thoughts!

Basically 1 Device sharing 2 separate Apple ID's.
    1 For App Purchases.
    1 For iCloud.

    Nov 17 Macintosh com.apple.launch[1] (com.apple.airport.updateprefs[]: posix_spawnp("/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple/80211.framework/resourses /updateprefs", ..): No such file or directory
I get this over and over and over and over. I assume this is why I had the BSod. Not sure how to get rid of it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I would recommend the following basic configuration for your network:
o Configure the D-Link as your primary Internet router that also provides the PPPoE authentication credentials to your ISP for Internet connectivity.
o Configure the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) as a bridge and connected to the D-Link by Ethernet. Also configure the AEBSn with the "Allow this network to be extended" option enabled.
o Configure the Time Capsule (TC) with the "Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network" option enabled. It will be used to extend the wireless range of the AEBSn to the upstairs location.
o Finally configure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to join the extended wireless network so that it will be available for iTunes streaming.

I have recently transferred data from my old Mac to my new one. The result was good, but I have 2 users now, whose data I want to merge into 1 single user, so to avoid having to switch from one user to the other to view and use certain files. How to do it?

    Here's an easy way:
Pick the user that you want to eliminate (making sure that the remaining user has administrator privileges) and move all of the data that you want to keep into the Shared folder. Reboot or log out and login to the user you want to keep. Copy all the data from the Shared folder into your account - placing it neatly in folders (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.).
Once the data is moved, log into the account you want to delete just once more to make certain that you've grabbed all the data you want to keep. Log out and log back into your admin account and go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and delete the 'old' user.
    That should do it.

  • Want to install Creative Suite 6 Premium on third home Mac CPU, single user, for college classroom use. No other users at home. Have CS6 on Mac desktop and laptop

I want to install Creative Suite 6 Premium on a third home Mac CPU, single user in the home.  Will use the third CPU in college class

A single user license only provides for having two activated installations.  If you want a third activated installation you will have to purchase another license.
You can install on as many machines as you like, but the activations of those are limited to two per license.  You could activate/deactivate as needed, but I do not know if you end up reaching a limit for that as well.  I know there used to be a limit on the number of times you could activate.

  • Single user over fiber

Are there any manageable products like a media converter or similar device for connecting a single user's PC to a fiber cable? I have many buildings interconnected by MMF, and a number of these locations have just one user. Right now they're using media converters, but I'd like something manageable, but an 8-port switch with a fiber transceiver is overkill.

    Hi
I would suggest to terminate all the media converters to a cisco manageble switch through copper. This will be an addition to your existing network. In this scenerio, though you need a pair of media converters, which u must be using right now, but at least you can do some broadcast control using VLANs.
If u can go for a L3 switch, then you can even create different subnets for even the nodes which are having more then one PCs.This will enhance your network performance considerably.
The other option, though not recommended, is to test ur media converter's compatability with a cisco GBIC/SFP module. I dont gaurentee that will work, but its worth giving a try.
But the best option is still, go for cisco switch at both the ends. :-)

  • Can you move websites published on from a Single User account to Team account?

    Hi All,
Need some help we had a single user account with which all our websites were hosted for clients, then we upgraded the whole studio to the Team Package, but need to know if we can cancel the single user licence and move the current live sites in that account to our team account? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Matt.

    Hi,
There is a ~/Library/Mail/   and this has a subfolder of /AccountTypes, so full path is ~/Library/Mail/AcountTypes
I have 6 active email accounts over 20000 mesages and send and receive constantly.  Until upgrading to Lion I was able to see the directory contents you mentioned and used to backup the .mbox files etc as required and everything was good.
    Now Nothing, hence my confusion
Any ideas?  Am loathed to delete complete drive as even though I have a timemachine backup and could also generate a diskimage file am just not happy

  • What are the network issues with single user versus mulit-user version?

I am having trouble attempting to share Pages documents over a network. My documents are created and saved in Pages on Mac 1. The same documents are opened, edited and re-saved on Mac 2.
Upon re-saving any document on Mac 2, (originally created on Mac 1), two error messages will appear. The first message says: "You do not have permissions to save changes in this document".
Once I have fixed the permissions problem, another message appears. The second message is: "Type: Couldn't save image. Description: thumbs/pagethumb1.tiff".
The only way to solve this second problem is to save the document with a different name on the station you are currently working on. It looks like the page previews may not be readable from station to station. Not to mention the network permissions not being transferrable from station to station.
I am wondering if both these problems are related to the fact that I am using a single user version of Pages when I should be using a multi-user version because of the network.
The Mac OS I am using is a Family version for up to 5 users. The Pages (iWork) version is strictly single user.
I am currently using Pages version 2.02.
Mac G4 Dual Mirror and Mac G4 AGP Graphics   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   both systems have lots of RAM; the G4 AGP has a smaller drive

Forgive my ignorance of UNIX, but will what you are
suggesting create multiple copies of the same file,
    leading to confusion?
The way I have set up my system there are copies of all my important files on the other machine, but not multiple copies of each file. Rsync backs-up the changes to existing files or copies new files to the other computer. It can be set to mirror one machine on the other, copy only certain files, not copy certain files, etc.
Currently I am opening the file over the network,
making changes and saving them back to the original
file. When I open up the same file on the sharing
Mac and attempt to do the same, permissions and save
problems occur. If I start out on the sharing Mac,
then open the original file on the networked unit,
the same permissions and save problems occur. No
    UNIX commands are used.
I don't know what is causing the problem you are experiencing, but there is way to do what you want. Rsync is one way, there are several other ways to synchronise machines that do not involve you typing out unix commands. Do a search here for synching folders
But at least I am only working with one file. And I
have my wife and oldest daughter using the Macs.
They are even less technically proficient than me.
How can I use the method you suggest without having
multiple copies everywhere? And how will I do this
    without scaring my Luddite family?
the system I use (rsync, .sh file, cron) is automatic. The files are backed up automatically every hour from 8 am until 10 pm. If there are no changes, nothing is backed up.
my macbook backs up specified files/folders from folder andrew and folder bev to the identical folders on my wife's mac mini.
the mac mini backs up the same folders to the macbook.
I use the mackbook 99% of the time, my wife uses the mini 99% of the time. this way all her files are availalble on the macbook and mine are available on the mini.
Once setup to your liking this is a transparent and unobtrusive system, but there are alternatives.
