MPEG-2 have to be deinterlaced?

I recently exported a project from FCP to an MPEG-2 using Compressor, looking at the file there are lines going across on certain frames because I didn't deinterlace the footage.
Is this going to look alright once I burn it to DVD?
And if it's not then does that mean I have to always deinterlace my footage when exporting to MPEG-2?
Thanks

Yes, I agree. There's no need to interlace, it should look fine on the computer screen. This is what I have just done, however I would like to know whether the same is true for outputting to a video projector where the image will be exploded quite a lot. I will know the results tomorrow so I'll post them here. My project is a very complex video animation and involves many diagonal lines of sharp contrast. (I can hear the groans!) I noticed something with my finished DVD. Well two things. When I imported the m2v file back into compressor it read it as progressive even though I hadn't as you say deinterlaced. When pausing the DVD on the computer (apple DVD player) I noticed that the image was very nice and clean with just a tiny amount of blur which looked okay, but on restarting the video I could see some artifacts (in comparison to the still image) like fuzziness where the two interlacing fields would have been, in certain parts of the image, and some subtle spidery-like arcs. I wonder if there's any way to get rid of these without compromising the image?

  • ALL my MPEG files have DISSAPEARED! Exclamation Point appears instead.

so, today i pressed play on a song and instead of hearing it i got an alert saying that the song cannot be found. and now theres an exclemation point next to the track number. It's doing this with ALL my mp3's! Even the songs that i wrote myself!
    any ideas?

I have this problem too. What I found is that some process has gone out and literally rearranged the files on my hard drive. Where they used to be arranged by album, now there are hundreds of new folders with one or two songs in each.
I know that Windows Media Player can rearrange files, but I have that preference turned off, and this isn't the way WMP rearranges them in any case.
This is really kind of a disaster. iTunes has lost half of my collection, and many of the folders have custom IDtags. If I find out that iTunes is what rearranged them, and that it can't even keep track of its own shuffling, I'll be most annoyed.
Otherwise, what else is actually moving files around on my hard drive?

  • Visual hub deinterlace setting?

if i have interlaced .mov files and i convert them to mpeg-4 files with the deinterlace setting on...will i lose quality? i am mostly trying to find a way to get ride of the horizontal flashes that happen on fast frame changes

I have visual hub also - basically do deinterlace footage for my projects - problem I'm finding with visual hub is that it's 'manual resolution' does not work even if you set it manually...
How else does one deinterlace footage?

  • Help needed for unusual .mpeg playback.....

Hello out there in discussion world. Thanks for taking the time to read this strange problem I'm having with some .mpeg and .mpg files playing back funny. Here's the scenario.
4 years ago, I was big into downloading music videos and live shows off kaaza and bittorrent on my dad's pc. The videos would play fine on that PC. I burned a few data cds of them when I bought my ibook and half of them worked and half didn't. The problem was this.....one video I had is 8 min. 33 sec. and it's the whole song and played fine on the PC....when I tried playing that exact same video on my computer using quicktime, the length 1 min 45 sec. The weird thing is I tried using real player and I even tried importing to Final Cut Pro and I got the same results of a very short run time. It's not speed up and it doesn't have any glitches...it just cuts off. The file size is the same and the files are identical. I even burned a data cd from Ibook and put them back on my dad's computer and it played fine on the PC.
I'm not sure what the problem is. I was thinking about re-encoding it, but I'm not sure how to do that. I have a;; these videos with runtimes of a minute or less when it's supposed to be at least 6ish minutes (generally speaking, of course).
Are there ways to re-encode it to .wmv? I saw that because all the .wmv files played fine on both systems.

That problem usually occurs with mpegs that have been incorrectly merged from shorter segments, resulting in an incorrect timecode. Most of them can be fixed by the "fix timecode" menu choice in this freeware: Mpeg StreamClip
Another option is to use this freeware video viewer that is not as picky about the timecode and will play most of these mpegs without stops: VLC

  • Problems updating projects to new versions of Premiere (CS5 to CC and CC to CC 2014) Memory consumption during re-index and Offline MPEG Clips in CC 2014

I have 24GB of RAM in my 64 bit Windows 7 system running on RAID 5 with an i7 CPU.
A while ago I updated from Premiere CS5 to CC and then from Premiere CC to CC 2014. I updated all my then current projects to the new version as well.
Most of the projects contained 1080i 25fps (1080x1440 anamorphic) MPEG clips originally imported (captured from HDV tape) from a Sony HDV camera using Premiere CS5 or CC.
    Memory consumption during re-indexing.
When updating projects I experienced frequent crashes going from CS5 to CC and later going from CC to CC 2014. Updating projects caused all clips in the project to be re-indexed. The crashes were due to the re-indexing process causing excessive RAM consumption and I had to re-open each project several times before the re-index would eventually complete successfully. This is despite using the setting to limit the RAM consumed by Premiere to much less than the 24GB RAM in my system.
I checked that clips played; there were no errors generated; no clips showed as Offline.
Some Clips now Offline:Importer  CC 2014
Now, after some months editing one project I found some of the MPEG clips have been flagged as "Offline: Importer" and will not relink. The error reported is "An error occurred decompressing video or audio".
The same clips play perfectly well in, for example, Windows Media Player.
I still have the earlier Premiere CC and the project file and the clips that CC 2014 importer rejects are still OK in the Premiere CC version of the project.
It seems that the importer in CC 2014 has a bug that causes it to reject MPEG clips with which earlier versions of Premiere had no problem.
It's not the sort of problem expected with a premium product.
After this experience, I will not be updating premiere mid-project ever again.
How can I get these clips into CC 2014? I can't go back to the version of the project in Premiere CC without losing hours of work/edits in Premiere CC 2014.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

To answer my own question: I could find no answer to this myself and, with there being no replies in this forum, I have resorted to re-capturing the affected HDV tapes from scratch.
Luckily, I still had my HDV camera and the source tapes and had not already used any of the clips that became Offline in Premiere Pro CC 2014.
It seems clear that the MPEG importer in Premiere Pro CC 2014 rejects clips that Premiere Pro CC once accepted. It's a pretty horrible bug that ought to be fixed. Whether Adobe have a workaround or at least know about this issue and are working on it is unknown.
It also seems clear that the clip re-indexing process that occurs when upgrading a project (from CS5 to CC and also from CC to CC 2014) has a bug which causes memory consumption to grow continuously while it runs. I have 24GB RAM in my system and regardless of the amount RAM I allocated to Premiere Pro, it would eventually crash. Fortunately on restarting Premiere Pro and re-loading the project, re-indexing would resume where it left off, and, depending on the size of the project (number of clips to be indexed), after many repeated crashes and restarts re-indexing would eventually complete and the project would be OK after that.
It also seems clear that Adobe support isn't the greatest at recognising and responding when there are technical issues, publishing "known issues" (I could find no Adobe reference to either of these issues) or publishing workarounds. I logged the re-index issue as a bug and had zero response. Surely I am not the only one who has experienced these particular issues?
This is very poor support for what is supposed to be a premium product.
Lesson learned: I won't be upgrading Premiere again mid project after these experiences.

  • Compressor / Deinterlacing

    Hello -
I have a few files to encode for the web, and I need some advice on compressor and deinterlacing.
I exported the video from FCP to Compressor to be encoded @ 640 x 480 with H.624 (2k kbps). I chose the deinterlacing filter, with the sharp algorithm, but the video - when exported - did not look good. I applied the frame controls; choosing out put fields: progressive and deinterlacing: best (motion compensated), and the Compression had 86 hours still to go after leaving the job all night (over 12 hours).
As a last ditch attempt at getting these jobs to run - with an acceptable end product and an acceptable timeline - before my deadline (Monday), I have applied the deinterlacing filter in FCP, and then submitted the job to Compressor without Compressor applying any deinterlacing.
Will this provide a deinterlaced final video...?
I am using FCP 5.1.4 and Compressor 2.3
    I am running the above on a G5 Dual 2GHz w/2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
My settings for the video in Compressor:
    Name: h26402k
    Description: H.264 for high-bandwidth connections
    File Extension: mov
    Audio Encoder
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 24.000 kHz

    Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
    Pixel depth: 24
    Spatial quality: 75
    Min. Spatial quality: 25
    Key frame interval: 24
    Temporal quality: 50
    Min. temporal quality: 25
    Average data rate: 2.048 (Mbps)
    Fast Start: on

    requires QuickTime 3 Minimum

    Hello All -
The first scene just finished exporting, and I checked the .mov in Quicktime and the files looks good after applying the deinterlacing in FCP, and not applying any filers or frame controls in Compressor. Thescene took a fraction of the time to export - Around 1.5 hours to export 8 mins of video, compared to 32 hours when using frame control.
Thanks to anyone who was thinking about answering my question
    Cheers.

  • MPEG files no audio, pause spontaneously

All my MPEG files play without audio until the seventh second where the video pauses but the playhead continues moving along the timeline. This occurs with .mpg files only in Quicktime (and iTunes), they play just fine in VLC, .mov and .mp4 files play correctly.
I was using 7.0.4, I reinstalled 7.0.1 and the problem still occured. I reinstalled 10.4.6 combo update - it didn't help. Safe Boot - nothing. Repaired permissions. Trashed preference files and again nothing. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
    Mac mini 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I tried encoding an mpg into an mp4, it worked. (and thanks for the tip). But I presume I'll have to do that for every MPEG i have... Please is there anybody that knows How to correct the problem so that it isn't reproduceable.

  • MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 batch convert

I have a large number of MPEG-2 files that were imported from an analogue source using Dazzle (on a pc). I want to edit them in iMovie, and i am looking for a program that can batch convert multiple files from MPEG-2 format to MPEG-4 format so that i can open them in iMovie.
If anyone knows how to do this and what program to use, i'd be grateful.

Not sure what kind of MPEG you have, what is the extension?
You may be able to get Compressor to work with it. Try and see what happens. My typical experience is that things  slow down with lag, beachballs, the works.
But see what happens first hand.

  • MPEG-2 Plugin for FCP???

I recently purchased the MPEG-2 plugin for Quicktime from the Apple website because I read somewhere that this would transfer to all applications on the MAC.
In particular, I needed it to work with Final Cut Pro. But when I tried to import the video, it does the same as it always has.
Video but no audio when brought into the timeline.
Is there an MPEG-2 plugin specifically for Final Cut?
I use "Final Cut Studios 1.5 with FCP 5.1.4"

The original video clips are actually the JVC proprietary MPEG-2 format (.TOD). I had to download the MPEG-2 plugin for Quicktime to use Streamclip (Otherwise it wouldn't even read them).
I know that the MPEG videos have the Audio and Video muxed together. They play fine with the MPEG-2 plugin and with the VLC player.
Why can't FCP read them correctly though? There is never any Audio. Every other video editing program is able to read MPEG-2 videos correctly (Sony Vegas, Adobe Premier Pro, etc). FCP is the only pro editor that won't read them.
You also mentioned that the MPEG-2 plugin comes with FC Studios. But I've been using it for almost 4 years, and I've never been able to watch MPEG-2 video on my computer. Is this an option that you have to specifically choose to install when installing Final Cut Studio?
    Thanks
There's got to be a plugin somewhere for FCP.
    Please advise.
    Thanks

  • Editing MPEG-2 files with embedded MPEG Layer 2 audio in FCP?

I need to edit .mpg files, MPEG2 with MPEG Layer 2 audio embedded. I can read the files in Quicktime no problem, but if I import them in FCP, there is no audio in the timeline, only video. If I try to build a DVD, DVD Studio does not recognize the file type. If I try to export it from QT in any other format, there is no audio in the new file.
The MPEG files have been created by a Canopus encoder card inside a Windows based broadcast video server at work. I would have thought that MPEG files were somewhat standard... I guess not!
Is there a way to convert these files so that I may use them in FCP or DVD studio Pro? Or configure the apps... or have a special codec?

Download the freeware program MPEG Streamclip. It can demux and convert the files to match your FCP Sequence settings (in most cases).

  • QT Pro with MPEG freezes

Some MPEG files freeze at some (same) place each time I try to play them in QT.I am trying to then convert to .mov
The original MPEGs play ok in other players
    PC P4   Other OS

It sounds like the MPEG files have "broken" time codes.
QuickTime Player is strict but other "players" (VLC is one) may "play" your file as intended.
You may need some "third party" software to convert your files to QT formats before your "export" to QT.

  • Convert to Mpeg the differences

    Hi all,
    Just a quick question.
I have been asked to convert some short 30 second clips to be used in a Power Point Presentation.
The client has asked for them as .mpeg I have only see .mpeg4 as format that I can convert to. Is this the same as .mpeg? And if is not then how would I convert to .mpeg?
    Thanks,
    Jamie

Your client needs to be more specific.
    My simple MPEG descriptions:
MPEG 1 is lousy quality so I would not be surprised if PowerPoint accepts this format.
MPEG 2 is used as an "inbetween" stage of DVD authoring.
MPEG 3 is the audio format .mp3
MPEG 4 is reasonably good quality, considering the data size.

  • Deinterlacing using Quicktime SDK

    Hi
Im writing on a Quicktime (*.mov) player using Quicktime SDK rendering frames for Direct3D textures. I get these textures using
    newTexture = (LPDIRECT3DTEXTURE9)QT::CVDirect3DTextureGetName((QT::CVDirect3DTextureRef)newC VImageRef)
    Which uses
    QT::OSStatus err = QT::QTVisualContextCopyImageForTime(d3dContext, NULL, NULL, &newCVImageRef)
to receive a CVImageRef for each frame.
This seems to be working fine. However now I would like to deinterlace this image, or at least scale it down to half size in Y do do a rough deinterlacing.
It seems that the deinterlace functionality provided by Quicktime is not available for the windows SDK (kQTSettingsDeinterlaceSource) and it also seems that I cant lock the direct3D texture I receive, which means that I cant manipulate that in any way.
So the question is, is there a way for me to deinterlace or maybe just scale the texture before I get it as a direct3D texture? Maybe using some function calls on the imageref or the direct3dcontext?
Does anyone have experience with deinterlacing using the Quicktime windows SDK?
    Thanks!
    Rasmus

    Hello again
We figured out a way to access the texture, which made it possible for us to do a simple deinterlace by removing every second line of the output.
By converting to a surface we where able to copy data to a new surface which we could lock...
Probably not the fastest most elegant way - but it seems to work alright

  • HDV 1080i to Standard def DVD "Ken Stone" method- interlace problems, help!

    Greetings,
I am on a tight deadline to produce a standard def DVD for an art exhibit, from HDV material that was imported and edited natively in FCP 7 as 1080i. I used the "Ken Stone" method of exporting the 10 minute sequence using QT conversion, as a pro res 422 HQ quicktime movie, then I took it into compressor 3.5 to make a Mpeg-2 file for a standard def DVD.
The problem is that the video that came out of compressor, when simulated in DVD SP 3.5 (and also when burned on DVD) has weird "interlaced" looking edges whenever there is movement in the video. It is a figure against a black background, and whenever the figure moves back and forth against the black background, the edges of the figure show interlaced-looking lines. The rest of the video where there is slow movement looks fine. BTW, motion was set to "Best" in compressor.
What am I doing wrong? was there something not mentioned in Stone's walk-thru, having to do with de-interlacing, or something I have missed? Is there a better way to produce a standard def DVD from HDV 1080i material?
Thank you so much for your help. I am down to the wire on this one...
    AKJ

exporting the 10 minute sequence using QT conversion, as a pro res 422 HQ quicktime movie...
You are adding an unneeded compression cycle for a start. Export with QuickTime Conversion always recompresses your footage, even when you use the same settings as your Timeline.
Export to QuickTime with Current Settings, Self Contained will give you a Master file that is identical to what you edited.
weird "interlaced" looking edges whenever there is movement in the video...
If your source material is interlaced it will look odd on a computer monitor. It will display correctly on a TV set.
having to do with de-interlacing, or something I have missed?
Deinterlacing will throw away half of the vertical resolution. Bye bye HD. No good can come of that, right?
What is your intended delivery format? Does the method that you are currently using to view the material compare with how the end product will be seen?

  • Problem: Still photos exporting transparent

I am having an unpredicatable, intermittent problem when exporting videos containing still pictures.
Sometimes the photos will become transparent after export. You can see whatever is beneath them (as in the case of a still over an interview, you can see the person talking underneath) or they just become dark of there is no video underneath.
Rendering goes well and the still play properly in the timeline.
It doesn't happen all the time and often not to the same pix each export.
They are jpeg images. I export using H.264 compression.
It happens on both my iMac and Macbook which are both system 6.8.2
I am using Final Cut Express 4
Not sure what other details are relevant.
I have used the deinterlace filter on the images before exporting. It seems to help, but still a few images will come out transparent.
    Thanks in advance!
    Mike

Are these photos that you imported into FCE or freeze frames? If they are freeze frames, deinterlacing is a good idea, but if they are photos, deinterlacing should have no effect on them.
Why don't you export as QT with current settings (not QT Conversion) and see if the problem persists. If you get a good export and you need an h.264 version, you can import that file into MPEG STreamclip.
    Good luck.
