MS Office alternative

Hi there.
I need urgent help. My wife is doing an essay and she needs MS Office (or alternative) on my Macbook Air. She needs to save the essay as a .doc format. She is very frustrated.
Please any advice or help on what to download or is there anything on the Mac App store?

I recently bought a macbook osx tiger, and my free trial of microsift office has expired. Although I need to use programs like msword and powerpoint for work, I cannot afford to buy and download the program. Are there any free programs for mac that are compatable with msoffice; that is to say, if I create a document on my home laptop, email it to my office computer, and be able tonopen it on a msoffice program?

Microsoft Works doesn't run under Mavericks.
Microsoft Office (v 2008 and 2011) run in Mavericks. I think they have just released some iPad versions, but they must be purchased as a subscription service with Office 2013 in order to actually use the programs.
Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can all open, edit Office documents, but they are completely different user experiences from Office. I prefer them due to their clean, simple interfaces, but they won't have all the features you have in Office.
They have iPad versions.
There are also Office alternatives, LibreOffice, NeoOffice, but they don't have iPad versions. They are also not in the App Store (last I checked).

How Can I Locate The Gimp + Open Office After Install

I am a fairly new Mac user so please make your reply easy to follow. I am running Panther 10.3.9 on a G3/400, 320 megs, dsl internet. I have just installed The Gimp, a free open source image manipulation program, the Phoyoshop alternative + Open Office, the free open source Microsoft Office alternative. Both installs took place within the X11 framework but now I cannot locate them. Where have they gone? For example, when I right click on a .jpeg file, then click "open with", The Gimp is not even in the list although I want it to be my main photo program. The same when I right click on a text file, Open Office is not on the list. I just want to put a program icon for both programs on the desktop for easy access. Thanks, Ken.

Unfortunately you are using an old version of OS X, and older versions of Gimp or OO are not as well refined as they now are.
If you are using 10.3.9 you might try Seashore which is not as complete as Gimp, but does not require X11 and is also Open Source. PixelMator is another decent image editor but it is shareware as is Acorn. Photoshop Elements is Adobe's low cost alternative to Photoshop. Find demos and downloads at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
NeoOffice Aqua 3.0 is another application like Open Office that will run on a PPC without X11, but requires Tiger. The earlier version that will run on Panther is version 2.2.5. Look for these at www.neooffice.org.
All of these applications will run slower on PPC machines than on Intel machines. There's really little you can do about it. If you need something relatively fast but with fewer features you can use AppleWorks.

Automatic debit / data carrier with alternative payer

Does anybody know how to configure the data carrier to have a file with data records per alternative payer and not per main payer? Example:
Payer 1: Markt 10
Payer 2: Markt 11
Alternative Payer for both: Head Office 20
The postings are in the payers. The automatic debit uses now the "alternative payer" and its bank, but generates a file with one data record for each "payer". Our client requests one single posting per Head Office (alternative payer). I am looking for a solution to have the data carrier program add up the items and generate a file with single records per "alternative payer". Postings in the Head Office are not possible.
Does anybody know if there is a user-exit for this? PMW? Any ideas?   Many thanks!!!!

A customer who pays on behalf of another customer is known as an u2018Alternate Payeeu2019 (or Alternate Payer). Though the alternate payee pays on behalf of another, the system maintains all the transaction details in the account of the original customer. Designating u2018alternate payeeu2019 does not absolve the customer of his/her obligation for payment.
The u2018alternate payeeu2019 can be maintained in Client-specific data or in the Company Code area. When maintained in the Company Code area you can use that payer only in that Company Code; if defined at the Client level you can use it across all Company Codes.
There are three ways to u2018selectu2019 the alternate payee when an invoice is processed:
   1. The alternate payee (say, 1000) entered in the customer master record is the one selected by the system as the default.
   2. When there is more than one alternate payer (say, 1000, 1900, 2100, etc.) defined for a single customer in the master record (you will do this by clicking on the u2018allowed payeru2019 button and create more than one payer), you may select a payer (say, 2100) (other than the default, 1000) while processing the invoice. Now the system will ignore the alternate payer (1000) coming from the master record.
   3. If you have put a check mark in the u2018individual entriesu2019 check box in the u2018alternate payer in documentu2019 section in the customer master record, then this will allow you to propose a new alternate payer, say, 3000 (other than those already defined in the system). Now, after defining this alternate payer you can use it to process the invoice. In this case, the alternate payer (3000) takes precedence over the payers (1000 and 2100) in step 1 and 2 above.

Where can I download a single license for Microsoft Office for Mac? On microsoft.org you have to buy 3 licenses for $150. I just want to download the home and student suite for my own computer. Thanks.

eBay also sell those license, or u can purchase them straight off microsoft after installing micrsoft office. But there are free MS Office alternative like Libreoffice mentioned.
But my favourite one is OpenOffice... it supports 64 bits and its open source which means there are free upgrades and extensions availble to download for specific need.

Needed to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion to address slowness on older Macbook, now I can't open documents or use my iWorks.

Recently went in to the Genius bar to pay to fix some aesthetic physical damage on my 2010 Macbook (Applecare expired) and while I was there I asked about some slowness I'd been experiencing but couldn't explain. My helper recommended that I switch from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion due to the amount of memory required by Mavericks. I did that, and it did fix the slowness issue, but now I'm not able to open my saved documents or use Pages. May be affecting other applications too those just happen to be what I use most frequently.
When I try to open a document it says I need "a newer version of Pages" but I apparently cannot run the newer version of Pages because it says it requires 10.9 or later.
Help, please? I really need access to my documents.

Try one of these programs. Then save in another format and attempt to open in Pages.

Is it possible to retrieve word documents from my imac after upgrading with yosemite from a 10.8 to a 10.10?

I have just upgraded my iMac from a 10.8 to a 10.10 with OS X Yosemite and have lost Microsoft Word. Is there any way to retrieve my lost documents and what is a replacement for the microsoft word program? When I try to open a word document a notice comes up informing me 'you can't open the app "Microsoft Word" because PowerPC apps are no longer supported'. Are there any options here? Appreciate any info.

Microsoft Word crashes every time I open it.

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro using Mavericks and every time I try to open Word the program crashes. This is a very new (as in this morning) problem. Do I need to upgrade to Yosemite for Word to work again? I downloaded the Office software for free from my universities website as a student, and now that I'm not a student anymore I'm not sure how to reinstall the software. The image below is the screen I get as soon as I open Word.

The crash says you have Mavericks, not Yosemite. 10.9.5 is Mavericks, Yosemite is 10.10.
But you don't want to upgrade until you isolate the reason for the crash. It looks like an incomplete installation of Microsoft Office.
You will need to find the original Office installer disc that installed Office on your machine. If you never got one, contact the school, or look at these Office alternatives:

Had issue with Powerpoint, so yesterday updated Word for Mac 2011 to v. 14.41 - now lots of functionality missing from Word as well as Powerpoint. Any suggestions welcome.

Hi - Word for Mac 2011 has been working fine. Yesterday suddenly couldn't edit into Powerpoint pptx from a PC (something I used to be be able to do). Got the latest update for Word for Mac 2011, so now running v. 14.4.1 on my iMac, which operates under OS X 10.8.5. Word is now playing up - and I seem to have lost functionality - bullets and numbered lists, 'find' function and more besides broken. I'm swamped with work that I need to do in Word and Powerpoint and welcome any ideas.

Lion and PowerPC apps

I was aware that lion doesn't have Rosetta support for PowerPC apps, but it is affecting me in a way I didn't anticipate. I have historic Word docs that I need to access from time to time — I didn't think through the obvious problem that they are PPC docs. Is there any solution other than to keep a computer that runs Snow Leopard or prior?

Unless you created these documents with Word 5.1 (from back in the System 7.x days) you will be able to open them with the current version of Word, from Office for Mac 2011. You've also got a few other options, such as opening them in TextEdit, or Pages, or one of the free office alternatives such as OpenOffice that has been suggested.
What version of Word were they created in?
