MS Office Mac+PC collaboration

Hi
Is anyone working on MS Office for the mac and collaborating with people who use MS Office for Windows. I know in thery that the files are compatible. But in the past, there were some glitches. I'm currently a Windows user considering swithcing to Mac. But it's very important for me to be able to seamlessly send and receive Word and other Office files and open them with all the inbedded formatting and features incuding things like Track Changes. Can anyone help me in this regard.
On a similar note, how compatible is iMacWork with MS Office.
thanks
Larry

A note about "strategy" in any setup.
I would start with a native Windows install on its own partition (BootCamp) and get it setup the way you want. You might be able to use Norton Ghost to just copy it over (but skip MBR if that is going to affect or interfere with the Mac's GPL/GUID partition tables).
Fusion or Parallels can pick up that native partition. Ghost can create a Fusion .vmdk image probably (haven't tested this for myself - check VMware and also Parallels forums).
Paragon has a utility to allow read and write from the Mac side to NTFS (otherwise it is read-only) while MacDrive7 allows access to HFS+ from Windows (32-bit only, no 64-bit support).
Fusion can let you treat most Windows applications as if they were almost a native application and be launched from the Dock's bar or an Application menu.
I have 1000s of files and I would like to be able to edit in Vista or OS X w/o worrying (they are mostly created in OpenOffice). No more worrying about synchronizing or "sneaker net" or having to use FAT (terrible idea and loses metadata it seems like).
This way I can use Quicken for Windows, OOo for Windows, but still use OS X for other chores.
The most common issue has been the "insufficient" planning for how much space to allocate to one or the other OS. My feeling is being limited to two partitions (OS X and BootCamp) has been an issue. Having both Paragon and MacDrive adds to the cost (as would Fusion etc). The Mac Pro allows me the freedom to put each system on its own disk drive, have a 'data' drive, and have backup.

I've had MS Office:mac 2011 on my imac for around 18 months now.  Outlook has just disappeared and when I find the file and open it it tells me that there is a problem and I may need to re-install it.  I've just done this using the installation disc which, then said the installation had been successful.
Outlook is still not working.  Can anyone please advise me on what to do next.

Remove MS Office 2011 completely (here are instructions) and reinstall it.
It's not a simple or fast process but it is important to follow all of the steps in order to get all the files that Office scatters around. This will not affect your data files, only MS Office and its preferences.

  • My PC crashed. Before crash I had it an office Mac, an iPhone, an iPod and an iPad. That's 2 computers and 3 deivces.  Or is it 5 authorized devices

My PC crashed. Before crash I had it an office Mac, an iPhone, an iPod and an iPad. That's 2 computers and 3 deivces.  Or is it 5 authorized devices?  Anyway, since the PC crash I bought an iMac and my office Mac was replaced by a MacBook pro.  I moved my iTunes files from my office Mac to my MacBook.  I moved my PC iTunes files to my iMac from my unaffected external hard drive.
I am now totally confused regarding what is authorized and what is not!  Only three devices appear in my iTunes account.  I "removed" the PC.  Still I am told that I can't download MY apps to my new iMac because I have 5 authorized computers.  Really?  Actually I have NO authorized computers.  Only one that has my apps still (my office Mac).
If I deauthorize all I know I can start fresh.  That makes sense.  What has be balking at the idea is the "one time per year" deauthorization!  What is the point?  Give me an accurate list allow me to deauthorization and authorize the devices I wish.  It is MY account with MY purchases,
    Advice please?

Authorization ONLY applies to computers.  NOT ipads/iphones.ipod/Apple tvs.  ONLY computers.
Deauthorize all, then authorize the active computers.

  • How do install Office: Mac 2011?  I am getting an error message when I go to the page...

trying to install microsoft office: mac 2011 home and student.  i am directed to a page and when i click on the link I get an error message about security.  i don't have the option anywhere of entering the product key.  not sure what to do.

You need to download the installer from Microsoft after you purchase it. Then you will have to run that application and it will request the product key as it goes thru the motions of setting up the product.
If you're trying to download an illegal version for free, that will explain the security message. The browser would be trying to protect you from yourself.

  • Safari won't quit, so I can't install Office Mac.

Hey guys. I got my new Office Mac, and I was hoping to install it. It said Firefox and Safari needed to close. Firefox was a snap (good job guys!), but Safari is doing HORRIBLE. It is not forcing to quit at all, and I don't want to restart or shut down (I bet it wouldn't work.) Now, according to THIS issue... I can't install my Mac Office 2011, and THAT on the other hand stinks, because I need it for school projects.
Is anyone willing to offer advice??? Thanks!!!

You say even force quitting won't work? When Safari is open hold down Option + ⌘ + Q.

  • I installed Office:mac 2011 on my new iMac running 10.8.3 and discovoed my file transfer from my old macbook installed Office:mac 2088. Now I have both installed and none of the office apps work - I keep getting the same error message

I recently purchased an iMac to replace my 2008 macbook.
I used migration assitant to transfer all of my macbook files to the iMac. I noticed that I had the old 2008 version of Office:mac 2008 on the iMac and decided to install Office:mac 2011 which installed successfully.
However, now I can't open excel or word or powwerpoint now using either 2008 or 2011.... I just get an error message saying there was an error and the app had to close. It offers to send a report to Microsoft.
I tried moving Office:mac 2008 to trash but this didn't resolve the issue.
Can anyone help (I am not a really sohpisticated user so be gentle)
    Thanks Dave

    Hello Dave,
This forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Microsoft Office in any way. I suggest you post Office related questions on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products.

  • Re install Office:mac 2008

    Hi
I bought Office: mac 2008 student and home in 2010 and had no problems. I then had to get my MacBook Pro completly wiped so I lost the software. I still had the backup disc so loaded it up and went through the installation process, I had to ring Microsoft support for my office product key which they found from the codes on the disc. This all worked/indstalled fine. The logos for each programme apeared on the icon bar. I then click on word (for example) and then another window appears saying:
    Activate Trial or Purchase
"If you have a product key for office 2008, enter it below to activate your trial or purchase now"
I have rung Microsoft again and they are now saying this is an absolete product and therefore can not assist me.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
Additional: When I re installed from the back up disc I entered the product key that I was re sent from Microsoft. Whilst installing I took down another product key that only includes numbers? I dont know what this is, but I have tried both product keys several times, in several ways
If anyone knows what I should do please dont hesitate to reply to this message.

Ask on the Microsoft Mac forums since it's their software you're having issues with:

  • HT1338 Microsoft Office Mac taken off my computer because no longer support by Apple?

My software for Office mac 2004 is no longer on my latop as it is no longer supported? I dont understand, Now I do not have any software?

Let me see if I can make a few educated guesses and save you some time:
You had Office 2004 running on your MacBook but recently upgraded to Lion (or Mountain Lion).  When you attempt to run any component of Office 2004, you get a Dialog Box that PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
Your best and easiest solution (although maybe not the cheapest) is to upgrade to Office 2011 and everything should work fine again!
    Two factual corrections:
    1. Apple extensively publicized the fact that Lion would no longer include Rosetta.  The problem is that the everyday normal PowerPC app Mac user had no idea what Rosetta was, that they were using it nor what its absence in Lion would mean for their everyday life!
    2.  Apple's license to use the underlying technology of Rosetta expired with the release of Lion (and now Mt. Lion).  The third party company that licensed this technology to Apple back in 2005/2006, was acquired by IBM, who still champions the PowerPC platform.
It is doubtful that IBM would have re-licensed this technology to Apple at any reasonable price...  Apple's "feelings" had nothing to do with it.

  • DESPERATE FOR HELP since downloading a separate outlook (from fast hosts) as addition to office mac 11 I can no longer access any Microsoft aps or documents including outlook - error messages 'can not change to identity for outlook'

I had office 2011 installed on my computer without outlook - been working fine.
I was given a trial of outlook decided against it at time due to cost - however my server provider fasthost have been offering outlook for free with a busines mail package. Trying to install it wouldn't due to the trail versions - so they gave me a step by step guide to remove outlook files.
Once i completed this the new outlook worked fine for 24 hours - however then we noticed all of our office programmes had been removed aka can not access any data and we are a management consultancy. Then fasthost recommended we reinstall out orginal office CD which I did and then all of sudden when download was completed everything now is inaccessable.
When I open outlook the message relays ' can not change to that idenity' I have tried to set up a new idenity and change permissions and even rebuilding it as per on line guides but when rebuilding it fails at the first step
Rest of office IE WORD, EXCEL I just get microsforft has encountered a problem and needs to close unexpectidly everytime I try and click into it.
I am now despirate as this is the second day we have had no access to anything and 6 day we have had no access to our documents \
FASTSHOST do everything via email and no incoming phone line (which they will give anyway) so I really need help
    Any options advice greatly recieved
I am also using the most recent software and have been doing regular software updates OS X Lion.

I, too am wondering if it's the download site. I am not aware of any way to download Outlook Mac 2011 alone from any site including Microsoft's.
It is common for unscrupulous sites to offer desirable but pirated software for a modest price, but serve it up with a dose malware. They get you money, possible a credit card number, your e-mail, your IP address, and all you get is pain.
There was an "Outlook Express" for Mac that was freely distrubuted but I'll pretty sure that it never ran natively under OSX. The first OSX native version fo Office:Mac was Office X, and it introduced Entourage as the Mac mail client.
IF Fast Hosts is your ISP, I'd certainly talk to them to figure out what you downloaded.

  • I just bought a new IMAC and i want to install the Office Mac 2011, but it doesn´t have a CD unit. How can I do it?

I just bought a new IMAC and I want to install the Office Mac 2011, but it doesn´t have a CD unit. How can I do it?

Howard has the easiest answer. Or at least, cheapest, since you don't need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive.
The "demo" software from Microsoft's site is exactly the same as what's on the DVD. Install that and activate it with the key in your software box.
    From Microsoft's site:
How do I install Office for Mac 2011 if my Mac doesn't have a DVD drive?
There are two options for installing Office for Mac if your Mac doesn't have a DVD drive.
Option 1: Convert your Office for Mac 2011 trial. To convert a trial version, you must have a valid product key. The product key will convert your trial into a fully licensed version of Office for Mac.
    1. Locate the 25-character product key in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Open any Office for Mac application, like Word, PowerPoint, or Excel.
    3. On the first screen of the Microsoft Office Setup Assistant, click Enter your Product Key.
    4. Enter your product key and complete the installation instructions.
Option 2: If you have not previously installed the trial version, you can download Office for Mac from the Office for Mac website. To download, install, and activate the software you must have a valid Office 2011 product key.
    1. Locate your 25-character product key found in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Go to www.officeformac.com/download
    3. Click Get Started to start the download process.
    4. When prompted, enter your 25-character product key and select your product language.
    5. When prompted, sign in with your Windows Live ID or sign up and create a new Windows Live ID account.
    6. After you enter your Windows Live ID, you will see a link to download the software. (You will also receive a confirmation email with a link to your My Account page if you prefer to wait and download your software at a later time.)
    7. Click Download Now to start the download.
    8. Save the file to your desktop. Do not change the file name.
    9. When the download is complete, double-click the .dmg file icon on your desktop. This opens the Installer application in Mac OS X.
    10. Follow the instructions in the installer screens to complete your installation.

  • VPN connected - how do I access my office mac?

VPN - I am connected remotely on my MacBook Air via a VPN connection to my office Mac.  How do I actually "see" the files, folders, etc. on my office Mac?

Thank you for your suggestion.  I did turn on file sharing on the server before I left last night and attempted to connect through the VPN to the server's local address at my office but I was unsuccessful.  The IP address I used was the static assigned IP address of the server computer and I waited for over 10 minutes to connect without getting a connection or any error messages.  Prior to that, when I used an incorrect address or attempted to use the actual server's assigned network name, I received an error message within 10 seconds.  Is there something I haven't considered at this point?

VPC 7  with Windows XP Home ed. has 3 CDs - Installation 1, Installation 2, and Additional Windows System Files.   Requires MacOS X 10.2.8+, 700Mhz G3, G4, or G5 processor, 512 RAM.
VPC 6  with Windows XP Home ed. has 2 CDs - Installation, and Extra System Files. Requires Mac OS 9.2.2 or Mac OS X 10.2.1+, 500Mhz G3 or G4 processor, 320 RAM.

  • Word Templates for Office:mac

I am trying to locate the Legal templates for MS word that are compatable with Office:mac.
My search of the Microsoft downloads website came up with nothing. In fact the few templates I found were more along the lines of novelties rather than the full blown templates downloads.
Does anyone know where the legal Pleadings/Forms templates are found? I am particularly interested in where the case-builder programs are.
    Thanks,
    Doug

MS Word templates are usable on both platforms Windows and Macintosh.
    For example I downloaded the Pleadings form located here;
    Pleading form with 32 lines
after expanding the form with Stuffit Expander it opened right up in Word for Mac.
When you first hit the download button you will see another page that tells you your system isn't compatible. It isn't talking about the template, it is talking about the Windows BS built into the MS website for automatic downloading. Just hit the download button on that page and your file will download in the Safari Download manager.

  • Can I use Office:Mac 2004 with my new MacBook Pro

I just got a brand new MacBook Pro, and I'm trying to install my office:mac 2004 edition, but it seems to not be working. Do I have to repurchace office:mac or can I just upgrade.

The 2004 version of Office will not work on Mac OS X Lion (10.7) or Mountain Lion (10.8) because it uses Power PC code. Power PC support was dropped in Lion and later. Version 2008 or 2011 should work fine.
