MSI P35 NEO2-FIR, Traces of fire...

Hello,
During dust cleanup of my PC. I noticed a burned part of my MSI P35 Neo2-FIR mobo, i wonder if it is still save to use now, maybe someone have any idea what does that 'chip?' is responsible for ?
Photos:

It looks like it's a resistor in the +5V power circuit to JUSB1. Must have been something plugged into it at one time or another that short circuited/overloaded it it and fried the resistor. What was plugged into the JUSB1 header? If all else is OK if you need to use any front panel USB device you can use JUSB2 or 3 instead. Get a volt meter and check the PSU for correct voltage of +5V to see if PSU is still OK as whatever caused that damage may have also damaged PSU.

  • MSI P35 NEO2 FIR voltage problems!!

    Let's start:
     I have MSI P35 NEO2 FIR ,e5200,2 x Geil ultra plus 1066+,as us 2900CT,lcpower 6550g and...rest- not so important for my questions.
1.My problem is next: default voltage values for my RAM is ~2.2-2.4 every time I check in windows (speedfun, sisoft Sandra, everest..)shows me 2.0 or some time even 1.8v  . When i change voltage in bios and went to win voltage on RAM is still unchanged (2.0v)  .
Same thing happen with NB voltage. But CPU voltage I can change freely with no problem.
When I change fsb(try to overclock) suddenly memory voltage rises how i do not now  , but only to 2.35 and no more.
Can anyone help me fix this problem because my memory is not stable at 2.0 or 1.8 sometimes and system crashes?
2.When i change cpu settings from 12.5*200 to (example)10*300 in windows even in system properties see that my current clock is 12.5*300=3750 and not 10*300=3000 like it should be .
    Is it bios problem?
    My bios version is 1.9.
    Thanks!

same problem with the Neo2 FR (like mine). After quite of bit of researching and testing i reckon that software can not correctly read the vRAM on these MSI boards. I found that Speedfan, Everest, and HardwareMonitor all gave an incorrect reading for my RAM's voltage. Also, if i increased the cpu voltage in the BIOS then the voltage monitoring programs would show an increase in CPU voltage and RAM voltage (even though i had not changed the latter).

on a MSI P35 Neo2 Fir moderboard with Intel Q6600 cpu)
When i check the memory with CPU-Zv1.44 the memory only goes with the frequencys of
    DRAM Frequenzy 399.5mhz
    FSb : Dram 2:3
    Cas# latency 5.0 clocks
    Ras# to Cas# delay 5 clocks
    Ras# Precharge 5 clocks
    Cycle Time 16 clocks
Why doesn't they go in 4-4-4-12 frequencys ???
Have tried to manually change dram timing in bios but no success
so i went back to auto dram timing.
What can i do to get the 4-4-4-12 timings.
    Please help.

~400 MHz is the correct frequency for your modules.  CPU-Z shows real clock speed.  DDR means Double Data Rate (two transactions per clock cycle).  Multiply 399.5 MHz by two in your head and you have your effective DDR(2) rating of 800 MHz.  There is no problem here.

CL5 is the standard latency for DDR2-800 modules.  It ensures that they are able to operate @JEDEC standard voltage settings @1.8V (+/-0.1V).  The board is supposed to set memory timings to CL5, otherwise your system would not be able to boot at standard voltage.  Check the "SPD" tab in CPU-Z and look for the standard timings that were programmed into the SPD chips of your modules (400 MHz), I am absolutely sure that you won't see 4-4-4-12 @400 MHz @1.8V being part of the SPD tables.
You have to manually adjust memory timings in BIOS to 4-4-4-12 AND also increase memory voltage to the value the manufacturer recommends for CL4/DDR2-800 MHz.  The voltage is usually 2.0-2.2V depending on the brand and type of RAM in use.

  • MSI P35 Neo2-FR / FIR

    Hello,
Yesterday my pc didn't start and my motherboard status led were stuck on all green. After I turned off the PSU and turn it on again the leds went to all 4 red. After an hour of powering on and off ( and 1 CMOS reset) it went on red green red red (ram failure).   I kept trying while changing the ram position around but no luck. While doing my attempts I notice that only a few times did the leds blink confirming that the their status changed. Also i noticed that when the leds blinked , the pc fans were making more noise, normal to when the pc is on and working. The other times i noticed that the leds just kept their old colors and the fans were a bit quite than normal.A few times the leds changed from red green red red to all 4 red (cpu failure) and with the fan noise like when pc is working normally.
The day before I had the same problem but I managed to start the pc within the first hour.
Now i'm stuck at all 4 reds with no status change on them and fan noise lower meaning i think that is not getting to the point where is checking the cpu,ram etc.
    PC Configuration:
    - Motherboard : MSI P35 Neo2-FR / FIR BIOS Vs : 1.C
    - CPU : Intel e8400 no OC
    - PSU : Fortron Blue Storm II 500 W
    - GPU : Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4850 no OC
    - RAM : 2x Corsair XMS2-6400 ver 5.4 no OC

    Update:
I removed the battery and reset the CMOS. After 2-3 hours i reinserted the battery and now the status led blink once to red green red red ( ram failure). I had this ram failure problem for a long time but i used to fix it by a CMOS reset or a few movement of the rams and was fine for a couple of months until it resurfaces at random.
I have tried 2 different rams and the same led status show. Also when i press the reset button, in 3 seconds the PC shutdown and restarts. Before yesterday pressing reset was just making the motherboard restart and the leds were blinking once again to show the status change but now no blink on the leds when i press reset.

  • Have MSI P35 Neo2-FR mobo, want 8GB RAM (4x2GB), anybody knows compatible ram?

I have MSI P35 Neo2-FR motherboard and want to buy 8GB ram, preferably 4x2GB(2x2GB + 2x2GB). Anybody has such a setup and can recomend some RAM?
I dont want to buy some random ram, because the motherboards are very picky when youn install the maximum supported ram.

Crucial tend to have quite compatible RAM across boards. On their site you can enter your motherboard model to find the RAM that is compatible. A gave it a run and the following is compatible:
    Part #: CT2KIT25664AA667 • DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64
    Part #: CT2KIT25664AA800 • DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64
    Part #: CT2KIT25664AA1067 • DDR2 PC2-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-1066 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64
    Part #: BL2KIT25664AA80A • DDR2 PC2-6400 • 4-4-4-12 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 2.0V • 256Meg x 64
    Part #: BL2KIT25664AL80A • DDR2 PC2-6400 • 4-4-4-12 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 2.0V • 256Meg x 64

The above are all 4GB kits so obviously you'd need to buy two packs to get the 8GB.
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=P35%20Neo2-FR/FIR
You do need a 64-bit OS to access the full 4GB or 8GB so also bear that in mind.

  • Need Help with ESATA on MSI P35 Neo2-FR

I have the MSI P35 Neo2-FR motherboard http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1261 and trying to get the eternal ESATA to work.  It works with one individual HD.  I'm using an external ESATA drive with 3 HD inside the external case with one cable running into the external ESATA in the back of the motherboard.  It's only recognizing 1 drive and the other 2 isn't showing up.  If I switch it to USB connection it will read all 3 drives.  I'm running windows 7 x64 but it recognize on my other 2 computers with a different motherboard. I have install it with the ACHI setup in Bios and I've also install the Matrix Storage Controller after installation.  I never install the Intel ICH9R SATA RAID driver where you have to press the F6 to install it.  Is that what I'm missing and is taht needed for the ESATA to work?    I'm getting this message "A storage device was connected. If this device is a port multiplier, only port 0 of the port multiplier will be active." Been googling all day and still can't figure out what I'm missing.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

    Quote
For some reason this board is Bios only have IDE, RAID and ACHI and I don't see a SATA.
IDE, RAID and AHCI are operating modes of the SATA Controller.  Everything okay here.
    Quote
Seems to me it's either this board and it's driver don't let you use the port multiplier but it suppose to support port multiplier.
It is neither the board, nor is it the driver.  It is a limitation of the Intel ICH9R Chipset.  You will have the same problem on all P35/ICH9R based mainboards.  Read here:

Unfortunately, used in the south bridges ICH9R the version of such technology provides access only to one hard disk at the specific moment of time. . The technology became more complex to realize , which implies to several access disks simultaneously, possesses higher cost and more higher central processor loads , therefore it can be rejected.
Here is the same problem on a Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6:

  • Installing MSI P35 Neo2-FR

    Hello
I'm installing Q6600 on my MSI P35 Neo2-FR mainboard. In the user guide it says (2-3, 2-4):
    - "Make sure that you apply an even layer of thermal paste (or thermal tape) between the CPU and the heatsink to enhance heat dissipation"
    - "Remember to apply some thermal paste on it for better heat dispersion"
    - "Meanwhile, do not forget to apply some thermal paste on CPU before installing the heat sink/cooler fan for better heat dispersion."
I'm feeling less confident in installing my Q6600 now without this thermal paste, since it's explicitly *recommended* in the guide. What would happen if I did not apply the paste?

    Quote
What would happen if I did not apply the paste?
The heat the processor generates would not be properly dissipated to the heatsink.  In a worst case scenario your CPU could shutdown automatically because of overheating and/or be damaged.
Have a look at your heatsink itself.  Often thermal paste or some sort of thermal pad is pre-applied for easier installation.
If there is not such thing get some thermal paste before you install CPU+heatsink.

    Spread Spectrum
When the motherboard’s clock generator pulses, the extreme values (spikes) of the
pulses creates EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). The Spread Spectrum function
reduces the EMI generated by modulating the pulses so that the spikes of the pulses
are reduced to flatter curves. If you do not have any EMI problem, leave the setting at
[Disabled] for optimal system stability and performance. But if you are plagued by EMI,
select the desired range for EMI reduction. Remember to disable Spread Spectrum
function if you are overclocking, because even a slight jitter can introduce a temporary
boost in clock speed which may just cause your overclocked processor to lock
    up."

  • MSI P35 Neo2-Fr -- can't get onboard audio device to appear in XP

I've just installed XP sp3 onto my new mobo (MSI P35 Neo2-Fr).
Attached is Q6600 core2 quad processor, 2GB memory (DDR2), ATI HD4850 gfx card. I haven't changed the bios much at all or overclocked anything yet.
All seems fine *except* that I can't windows XP to see that there's an onboard audio device.
(It is enabled in the bios btw.) I've tried installing the high def audio driver on the CD from mobo box, and also downloaded the latest from the MSI site. I uninstall the driver and reboot before trying to reinstall it again btw.
The audio driver installer used to say there was a problem installing the driver, but it doesn't any more. After installing it and rebooting, XP control panel -> Audio devices says there are no audio devices.
Also, I notice that there should be an extra audio item in the XP control panel (according to mobo manual), but this hasn't appeared.
In XP's system hardware list there are no sound devices under Sound, but there are two unknown PCI devices (with yellow question marks next to them).
    Any suggestions?

Which PSU, do you use Kimpsu?
Would have a guess it's dual +12V rail......
    Antec or Seasonic.......
My current PSU is an Antec NeoHE 550W (though I've had many others too, like Zalman, Seasonic and Enermax), so in theory it has three 12V rails, 18A each. Well, of course it cannot feed 18A on each rail simultaneously, but still considering that's the limit, the limit should not be a bottle-neck. Luckily they are devided logically enough, one rail for the directly attached cables (which is the motherboard really) and two for the five detachable cables. And the two rails are logically divided, so putting my PCI-e cables at both ends I get pretty decent amps for two GFX cards (one rail for each) and the motherboard. The rest (HDDs, optical drives) are then attached to cables connected next to those cables, so in fact HDDs are on one rail together with one GFX card, and optical drives (and my fan controller) is on another rail with the other GFX card. Thus I get pretty even distribution between rails (lucky me).
It was one of the nicest quiet PSUs at the time of purchase. If I were to buy a PSU now I would probably get a Corsair, probably HX520 or HX620, but they have multiple 12V rails... VX series is fine too, only that there are no detachable cables, so although it is an option, I really need to think if I wan't a PSU that only has fixed cables...
Having multiple rails suck a bit (although on most PSUs they are not really separate rails, but still current limited), but luckily single rail PSUs are coming back after a couple of years of "multi rail fashion".
And yeah, PSUs made by Seasonic are pretty popular these days, like the Antec NeoHE I have, Corsair HX series, VX450 and so on.
PS. Good guess, though guessing Antec or Seasonic covers pretty much of the PSUs out there that are of a "quality" brand, at least if Seasonic covers the PSUs made by Seasonic for other companies like Corsair. And I don't mean other suck, just judging by how large % of all quality PSUs are Antec. And yes, there are a few models from Antec that really suck and have high failure rates, and cannot be called quality (like the CWT manufactured Smartpowers and the older Truepowers, also by CWT). Judging by just the company that puts the stickers on the case is not always wise, especially with Antec...
PPS. Judging from your signature, you have an Enermax and a Corsair VX550 (which is manufactured by CWT I believe). How do you like your Corsair? Is it quiet? I've been considering it as an option to replace my Antec (I'd like to have a single 12V rail). Also the TX-series is an option.

  • MSI P35 Neo2-FR, Im having WEIRD beeps in BIOS continiously unstopping.

Oh dear lord, i bought a new board and now im having some stupid beeps going off every 3sec in the BIOS, i updated to 1.8 bios and now its going every 1sec, BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP, every time there is a beep the system hangs a bit, i pretty much cant do anything in BIOS and its getting on my nerves. What is causing this? I tried removing all the drives, my cpu fan is connected to molex not to the motherboard though. In windows they go away, a bit when loading windows logo and it hangs the windows logo too for a few times, then all leds go green, before im getting from top to bottom Green, Green, Green, Red, Green

EDIT: Allright, the answer to this problem is, go to windows and do a restart from windows, go to BIOS and there is no more beeping. I did a save and exit and rewent to BIOS and still no beeping, then did the shutdown and power on to BIOS and no beeps. So, weird problem but an easy answer to fix it. I think its something to do with the motherboard booting for the first time, it just needed to go to windows and make a restart. Weeeeeiiiiird.

OK, stay calm.  Getting frustrated is only going to make people not reply.
I'm not sure why disabling EIST is giving you a BSOD.  I don't think anyone has any ideas since you have no real replies.
A kernel trap is hardware failure usually.  Makes me think when you disable EIST, the machine becomes unstable.   Are you setting the default multiplier for your processor?  Hell, we don't even know what it is.  How about you list your rig specs?
Just to add:  Overclocking with EIST enabled is pretty much the same.  You save power, so I don't know why you'd want to turn it off, in all honesty.
