MSI R9 280X BF4 3GB SWITCH DVI TO HDMI???

Hi All
It has been quite a while since I have been in this forum, My old profile seems to have vanished maybe due to lack of login so I have re-registered
I am still running my trusty old 990FXA-GD80 mobo (see sig) & today I just received an MSI R9 280X BF4 3GB graphics card, I installed it & did not get any signal via the HDMI output so I found a VGA cable & DVI adaptor & connected it to the TV (Sanyo 42" LCDd) via the VGA input & it booted up fine & I was able to install the drivers & AMD catalyst etc software
I typically run MSI Geforce graphics cards so the AMD Radeon in depth options & menus etc is fairly new to me, Normally I would connect a GTX card & it would simply recognise the HDMI connected monitor or TV & all would be good but for some reason I am unable to get the HDMI output going at all?
I have both cables - DVI to VGA & HDMI to HDMI connected between the TV & graphics card
I might just have to buy a DVI to HDMI cable in the morning & see how that goes?
Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks Nichrome
Yes it is currently connected to a 42" LCD TV, It may not be easy to get hold of a monitor with HDMI input on loan to test either
I will be able to connect my brand new LG 60" LED LCD 3D (60LB6500) TV tomorrow & see if the HDMI will work that way? (The new LG only has HDMI inputs as far as I can find but I will know for sure tomorrow?) It may just be the older 42" LCD TV not playing the game, If the new LG 60" does not work via the HDMI output then its onto the other options........>
The previous Geforce drivers & software was completely removed before the Radeon install but I do agree it may be an issue & a clean install via driver fusion might be needed?
The current or latest drivers I could find is> 14.501.1003
I originally installed the latest drivers from the MSI site & could not find the option to connect via HDMI so I went to the AMD site hoping to fix the issue with new AMD drivers
The audio runs direct to a receiver via SPDIF so for me there is no real need for HDMI output unless it is going to be a better quality option?
From what I have read the quality or performance should not really be any different between the DVI & HDMI output so it should not be any major trouble to buy a DVI to HDMI cable? Any opinions

  • Msi R9 280x Gaming 3Gb, texture flickering BF4

    Hey people,
I got texture/screen flickering with my new MSI 280x Gaming 3Gb after playing the campaing in Battlefield 4 for around 20-40 min. I'm using the latest AMD 14.4 drivers. In Bf4 all graphics settings are on Ultra (vertical sync off).
I don't know if a rom could affect this weird behavior but here is my current rom: lalalalas://www.dropbox.com/s/48618erlvh4gvyy/Tahiti.rom (i am not allowed to post links.)
I recorded a short video with Fraps. This is the hidden link on Youtube: lalalaa
Temperature was around 71 when recording the video according to GPU-Z. I have read that these cards can go up to 85-90 degrees, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Vbios is latest (TV277MH.350). Try disabling CPU core parking as some users reported that it solves such flicker issues:
    http://bitsum.com/about_cpu_core_parking.php
Thanks for the suggestion. I already have some core parking function disabled in windows and in BIOS, because it could disturb any audio recording in my music software (no power saving, EIST, C1E, etc...). However, this software is new so i will try and test this out.
Is 79-80 degrees normal for this card while playing a game? This is with room temperature around 19, a Coolermaster CM690 iii with 2x 200mm fans, 2x 120mm fans. No cable cluttering and other heat sources are 4 Hd's, but there is plenty of airflow. The fan speed is sometimes keeping temp around 79 Degrees and other times the temperature goes up to even 87 while the fan speed is not even close at running a 100% (for example at 52%).

None of that is a bios version. We need a link to a copy of your vbios saved to file and uploaded to a file hoster to check if there is a newer version. If not allowed to link yet add a break to the link so it is masked being a link.

Others reported that too when using the same card. If unlocking won't work (>>How to use MSI Afterburner<<) contact MSi about it as there seems to be an issue: >>How to contact MSI.<<

UEFI is aGOP compliant vbios that allows to use secureboot/fastboot (Windows 8/8.1). If not using UEFI booting it doesn't matter which you use. Older mainboards with UEFI but not being GOP compliant on the other hand won't work with a GOP vbios and only the legacy vbios allows to use the card.

  • 2d Screen Flickering - MSI R9 280X TwinFrozr OC 3GB (R9 280X GAMING 3G)

    Hello,
    OS: Win 8.1 - 64bit
    GFX: MSI R9 280X TwinFrozr OC 3GB (R9 280X GAMING 3G)
    GPU-Z:
2d flickering, it seems, when it downclocks to 300Mhz, the screen starts flickering, and can't run games in 2d mode without flickering. The GFX is perfectly fine playing games in full screen.
    Any ideas, folks?
I'm sure that changing the clock to 450Mhz default would fix this, or perhaps 500Mhz, but I don't know how I should do that, and maybe there is another fix for this.
    Bios Attached as well: mega.co.nz/#!bt5XiSAa!6d07jJRFNM4lT3zWDAmyGnqTo-V4zsqZe4FW5LZEdz0
    Thanks!

I know this has been longer than 60 days. However I just wanted to post my fix for others in case its searched for. This has been so frustrating to figure out. My fix has been a variety of things such as clean installs of the drivers MANY MANY times. The final time I reinstalled the ATI's CCC driver 14.7 beta. I noticed that I unknowingly (by ignorance not action) installed MSI's version of CCC from there website as well. After (not) installing MSI's version on top it seemed to help but the clock speeds still fluctuated from 300MHZ- to the max 1020MHz continuously. After looking in the CCC I saw an option that caught my eye. "Alternate DVI Operational Mode" is checked by default on both screens options. So I unchecked it...applied changes.... VIOLA no more flicker and clock speeds have been stable for the past 5 hours. I however have not restarted my computer for fear it will return and I throw the computer out the window. This is atleast worth an attempt if you have the dreaded "Flicker" of the R9 280X.
For information my setup is as follows:
    M/B- MSI A88X-G45 Gaming
processor: AMD A10-7850K (AMD A series black edition APU) w/ r7 200 series
    2 (cheap @ around 120$ each) Monitors- Acer (G246HL) and LG (22M45) 60Hz running at 1920x 1080
    PSU: (Cheap 35$) 600W
HDD: 1TB (Master) and 2TB (slave) seagate  SATA drives
    VIDEO: MSI R9 280x 3gb Video card
Issue noticed: Flicker when running either one or two (Extended screen) monitors usually while browsing, schoolwork, or watching netflix (2D actions???) and less but still during StarCraft 2 game play. tried just about every forums suggestions except the one about changing a register key profile.
Outcome of above suggestions: Relief....so far (6 hours later)

  • MSI R9 280x 3gb GAMES CRASH AND LINES DOWN MY SCREEN

I have been using the MSI r9 280x for sometime now, possible 7months and all has been good untill the other day; Playing CSGO My screen went to a set of lines running down and and a loop of the last noise I heard was playing over and over.
Only a hard restart of my PC would solve the issue; this occurred when also playing Wolfenstein: The New Order and Skyrim (tends to be high intensity games).
I have cleaned out my GPU, all of my fans, have tried to play these games on the older drivers and latest drivers and still the problem occurs.
It manages to last maybe 5minutes when I have my fans on 100%. I haven't overclocked or underclocked by GPU but still have the issue. I know it can possible be a GPU problem as I tested my GPU with furMark. As soon as I started a 1080p benchmark, my PC froze instantly and lines all down my screen again.
    PC Specs:
CPU: AMD FX8320 Black Edition 8 Core 3.5
    CPU Cooler: H100i Water Cooler
    GPU: MSI Radeon r9 280x 3gb
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5
PSU: Modular CX750M ATX Power Supply - Bronze
    RAM: (4x2) 8GB Kingston 1333hz DDR3
PC Case: Corsair Air 540 (2 basic fans at the front, 120mm corsair at the back)
PLEASE PLEASE I really need help on this, thank you!

    Thank you for the Advice.
I ran into a second problem this morning, when on start-up or even loading Google chrome, the same problem occurred with lines all down my screen yet again.
I am currently using my old GPU (Radeon HD 7770) and I am able to run CSGO; Wolfenstein etc on high intensity without my PC crashing or this problem occurring, leading me to believe that it must be my GPU.
My r9 280x runs at around 45C when idle, and sometimes that's even when my fans are running at 75-100% speed. Looking online I found that the Average Idle temp should be around 34C; something is wrong here :(
I'm not sure if there are any other measurements you need me to take to make sure that yes 100% it is my GPU. But looking at it how it is, unfortunately it is.
Any more ideas, suggestions would be really helpful thank you!

  • MSI R9 280X GAMING vs MSI R9 280X GAMING BF4 edition

    Hi Guys,
I was wondering if there is any hardware difference between the MSI R9 280X GAMING and MSI R9 280X GAMING BF4 edition.
I already have an MSI R9 280X GAMING BF4 edition and I want one more that is identical. However the retail price for the "none BF4" is cheaper.
    Please advice.

    Hi,
There is no difference in hardware. The BF4 version has a code to get a copy/download of BF4

  • Sound from new MSI R9 280X - coil whine? RMA?

    Hey all.
Just trying to determine if the sounds coming from my new PC's video card are normal or not. Here is my build: au.pcpartpicker.com/p/1XKQb
I hear this sound when running what I would consider low end graphics tests as well as when I booted up BF4 for the first time last night.  Graphics automatically set to high.
I've recorded a few sounds of the 'squeals' that I hope are good enough for people to make a judgement. The sound seems to be coming from the part of the video card where the power connects. I have reseated the card and tried using a different power cable. It is not an issue with the fans.
First is a capture from a test in Unigine Valley:
    soundcloud.com/angryeye/sounds-from-friday-evening
Second is a sound from loading Team Fortress 2 and then moving the mouse a little bit.
    soundcloud.com/angryeye/sounds-from-friday-evening-1
Interestingly, when I enable Vsync in Team Fortress 2 the sound disappears. If I enable Vysnc in the Unigine Valley test, it does not make a difference.
I also ran a test in the 3D Mark(did not have the option to change anything as it is only a demo) and the Ice Storm made the worst sounds from the card:
    soundcloud.com/angryeye/ice-storm
    soundcloud.com/angryeye/ice-storm-2
Considering buying 3DMark so I can muck around with the settings a bit and see which cases I hear the sound and which i don’t
I also loaded up BF4 last night and got the noise with VSYNC enabled or disabled(can record if needed). Also the same issue in Deus Ex, makes sounds with Vysnc on and off.
Can anyone with a MSI R9 280x confirm if this is normal? Is this coil whine? Reviews on newegg seem to indicate a lot of people are getting similar sounds and I’m not really thrilled with this considering it’s a brand new card and the first time I've built and i can hear this through the case and fans.
Could it be something that can be fixed by modifying voltage settings (as it seems to come from the power connection)? Or does this require an RMA?
    Any advice appreciated.

    so your parts are:
    CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
    Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card
Case: Cooler Master HAF XM (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Antec HCG M 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - OEM (64-bit)
ok there are 2 causes of coil whine and odd noises so be totally sure its coming from the Graphics card itself by getting your mike directly over it and move it around and test other parts for noise as sometimes its The PSU (Power Supply Unit) that is doing it or it can cause it as yours is a split +12v unit (+12V1@40A, +12V2@40A) it may be the cause as Antec at times do not make reliable units (those rating is has for 2 rails look to me as being fake as they exceed its power limits combined (12v x 80A = 960W so it can probably do 40A on one but then the other will be terrible at 22.5A as it looks like there doing virtual +12v rails with 40A OCP fuses)) so its suspect as it may not be behaving well!

  • MSI Z87 G45 + MSI R9 280X + Windows 8.1 secure boot difficulties

After updating to Windows 8.1 Pro I had the "Secure Boot isn't configured properly" watermark as many others. I determined my disk is GPT partitioned, I enabled UEFI on the GPU by moving the physical switch from the 2 position to the 1 position, and enabled Windows 8 Feature + Secure Boot with standard settings in the G45 bios (ver 1.5). After doing save and reboot I'm presented with a blank screen with my monitor showing a "DVI no input" message. I reset the CMOS to allow me to boot again, but after a couple more tries with the secure boot settings such as enabling/disabling Fast Boot I have not been able to get it to work.

I have no idea how to put the motherboard into User Mode and Google doesn't help me much further either. How to activate a key? I have a I5-5670K and GTX 770 by the way.

  • MSI R9 280X - Severe artifacts

    Hello,
I bought a R9 280X 3G BF4 some time back and I had some artifacts in crysis 3 so I dismissed it as a game specific issue.
But, recently I got LOTR: Shadow of Mordor and the game displays some very serious artifacts making the game unplayable. The game works perfectly on my other PCs, so I used graphs from MSI AfterBurner & GPU-Z for troubleshooting and found out that the artifacts appear only when the VRAM usage crosses about 2GB.
Its getting very frustrating as I am unable to use the full 3GB VRAM and even lower-end cards can run games better. Please help me in getting this issue resolved.
note: I tried running the GPU in a different PC & I got the same issues.

Hi all. I just replaced my 7950 card with an MSI R9 280X card and now my system still shows that that card is a Radeon HD 7900 series card. I already removed and completely uninstalled the old drivers, rebooted, and installed the latest Catalyst driver and the system still shows the card as a Radeon HD 7900 series card. Can someone please help? Also, how do I know if I have the latest version of the BIOS? And how do I access the BIOS? My machine has UEFI.
    Here's my GPU-Z screenshot.
    Thanks for your help.

I'm not able to create a bootable USB disk using the HP tool.. when I select make boot disc and point to the win98 folder and click start.. it simply formats the drive and refuses to make the disk bootable or put any files in there.. it's just empty.. :( Is there any other tool I can use? Please help, thanks.
It should be impossible not to get it done with the HP tool. Follow the guide. Try an alternate usb stick if no dice. Also be aware that you can't see system files on the stick unless you set in Windows to make those visible so the stick might appear "empty" while it is successfully created a bootstick.

Also, so each of my three monitors has HDMI and DVI.. so how would I go about connecting them to the ports behind the 280X? In which order and when to use the adapter?
One of the three screens needs to be connected pure dP or active dp to dvi which one doesn't matter. You simply can't just connect three screens via DVI/HDMI to one card.

Does the BIOS switch on the 280X have to to be 1 or 2 when flashing BIOS?
1 (as it came out of the box) because 2 is backup.

  • MSI R9 280X 3G Gaming artifacts and freezes

I just bought a 2 month old MSI R9 280X 3G Gaming card. After I installed the card my PC didn't POST, so I went into the bios and resetted everything to default. Then again my computer didn't POST. I checked the bios switch on the graphics card, it was set on position 2, I switched it to position 1 and my computer booted into Windows. I installed the catalyst drivers and started to play some games. It went quite bad, I had artifacts, game crashes and overall bad performance.
I read out the bios version on switch position 1 (the one that does work), this is ver. 015.040.000.000.003435. I flashed the bad bios version on switch 2 which was version 015.040.000.003.003435 with 015.040.000.000.003435.
After the flash I was able to boot windows on switch 2. Still I do have performance issues with games, like artifacts and game crashes.
    My S/N is 602-V277-38SB1312093272.
Can you guys help me out with this?
    Thanks in advance!

Alright, I tried to flash my bios to E7681.430 with the USB DOS tool available on this forum. After my computer booted the USB stick, I was prompted to do a memtest. It hanged, so I wasn't be able to memtest before flashing.
I download the last version of memtest86+ 5.01 and tried to memtest test 5 and 7 for 20 loops, it passed with 0 errors, so it seems my system is stable. Then I copied your provided BIOS to my USB stick and tried to flash it with M-flash in my current BIOS. M-flash wasn't able to recognize this file, so I won't be able to flash it.
So with not be able to pass memtest (only my own downloaded memtest86+ v5.01) from the MSI Bios Flash Dos tool and not be able to flash a new bios with M-flash. I'm not sure what to do next, I won't try the Windows flash option, because of this https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=177335.0  topic.
On the other hand I looks like I need to update to version 4.3 for me being able to use the r9 280x card.
Can you give me any advice about what steps to take next? Thanks in advance.
