MSI RG54GS2 misbehaves

Hello
I have a RG54GS2 which was working fine and merrily allowing me to use it to do what it does best. Connect wirelessly to the modem which grants me internet access. However one day I woke up to find that I could not connect to the internet.
Surprisingly though I could see it.
Let me explain that again. I can see that a website is up. I can resolve it's name I can ping it. I simply cannot connect to it. Similar for my instant messengers. They can see the servers they just cannot authenticate.
Since the Router had worked fine till now I assumed that it was my ISP's issue and informed them. They told me quite handily that it was my problem. I decided not to press it and went through the obligatory resetting of the router and resetting of the modem. After a bit I decided to try carrying my router and pc elsewhere to remove the modem from the chain and found that it worked fine at work and at a friends workplace.
I called back the ISP and they said they would look into it. They seemed to find nothing (though I would get breaks when suddenly the net would work then two minutes later the glass firewall went back up). I carried the router to another friend with the same ISP who was having similar issues with his wireless and found that mine worked like a  railway labourer while his ... eventually turned out to be a braindead way of having two DHCP servers running so by the time I left his issue was solved and I was no clearer on my position.
After having pressed my ISP for answers ( and they butchered my bandwidth in the frenzied throes of discovering the gremlin) I carried my router to a friends Workplace and found the same results. So it seems that I can replicate the problem though I am sorely at a loss as to what triggers it.
Can anyone give me some assistance?

Which server?
I can ping the ip address
I cannot connect to telnet on port 80
which seems to be my issue. I can see the internet. I know servers are there I can route to them. I can ping them to see if they are there. As soon as I try to make a connection then it hangs wether on the authentication section of a program or in a web browser it will go "looking for website... found website... contacting website" then it stops there eternally.

• Problem setting up WDS with MSI RG54GS2 & Motorola WR850g

Problem setting up WDS with WR850g & MSI RG54GS2
Hi,
I'm trying to bridge 2 routers: Motorola WR850g & MSI RG54GS2 .
I set the MSI as the main router (it works better for me as a router than the Moto), and the Moto is the repeater. I have set it up exactly as the guide on Broadbandreports.com for the Motorola , and on Tom's Networking http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2004/04/14/how_to_wds_bridge/
The Moto sees the MAC of the MSI (Status is UP), the MSI doesn't have a page that shows WDS MACs . I know the routers are connected because when I connect a laptop to the Moto wireless network, it gets an IP (and the DHCP on the Moto is disabled) and the default gateway of the connection is the IP of the main (MSI) router.
The problem is I can't surf anywhere. I can't even ping the MSI router - which should be possible if the WDS works properly. The Moto Wireless Bridge Operation is set properly to Access Point/Wireless Bridge .
Can anyone solve this?
Thanks.

David, welcome to the discussions.
Are you refering to Airport Extreme Setup as the Extreme base.
Or are you using a 3rd party Router as your primary Base, or the Express as the primary base.
Read the supplied link, Not all 3rd party routers are WDS compatible.

Who is you Internet Service Provider?
What brand and Model Modem did they furnish?
Are you using Dial-Up...DSL...or Cable?

• MSI RG54GS2 - problem with print server

Hi,
I have router MSI RG54GS2. Everything works correctly. If I connect printer to USB on router then my router works only 10 hours and then it freezes. If printer is not connected, router works fine without freezing.
I tried to use new firmware, but it doesn't solve my problem.
What should I do, please?

So, I tried it. Router works correctly without freezing but only via cable :( . If I try to connect via WiFi to my NETWORK, then my notebook and PDA find SSID and that's all. Widows show formular that everithing is connected correctly, but internet and lan network doesn't work. If I disconnected PRITER from router, then noteebok and PDA could connect to internet and local network.
:( I have only trouble with this router :> .

• Extend a WRT54G connecting a MSI RG54GS2

I own a WRT54G that is actually connected to a ADSL modem and been working fine for about a year.
I have a spare Router (MSI RG54GS2) and would like to use it to extend WRT54G's range without installing (if possible) DD-WRT.
Is there a way to hook up those 2 routers wirelessly?
This is the MSI router's page:
http://latam.msi.com/spanish/products/detail_spec/RG54GS2_spa.htm (sorry it's in spanish, but I couldn't find the english page).
Thanks in advance
Lord Vader

You cannot communicate both the router's wirelessly...You have to use non-linksys firmware communicate both the router's wirelessly(DD-WRT)...

• Msi rg54gs2 print server incompatibility

noticed the common issue with rg54gs2's print server throughout the forum..
i've got a hp dsc 1410 usb printer (which is not in the compat. list from msi).
i get it to print smaller documents via the server, but with larger files (photos i.e.) it starts, but suddenly halts while printing..
tried both direct and buffered print, disabled firewalls/encryption, checked signal etc...
got a p4 2.6ghz, 512mb with xp sp2 and an integrated 54mbit wlan.
can anyone relate to this problem or confirm rg54gs2's incompatibility with printers not in msi's list.
/silas

you'd probably get a better answer by contacting MSI support: http://support.msi.com.tw

• Just a few quirks with MSI-Radio...

Well, I just lost my stereo reciever...Looks like I'll be forced to turn to headphones and MSI-Radio
First of all, the signal bar is fine grandour except that it sucks...Sometimes it shows no signal and sounds fine. Whats up with that?
Second, more importantly...I close MSI Radio, and it won't shut up...For some reason it refuses to cut the signal when closing it (Maybe I'll just be forced to manually unplug it from the back of comp)
Third, some idiot installed ad-ware on my comp!!!  #$@#!!!  "Ad-aware" doesn't seem to detect it and "spy-bot search and destroy" detects Hot-bar but can't remove it...What to do...
**Well, looks like I'll get the reciever back**
;-))Might as well fix it anyways though, can't stand have anything imperfect about my comp...

#2 is about the only one I can offer any advice on.  First of all, I'd go to Download -> Multimedia -> TV@nywhere Master and make sure that I had the latest version of the TV@nywhere Master Driver and MSI Radio.
Secondly, you could probably silence MSI Radio by opening the Windows volume control (or whatever it's called in your version of windows) and muting whatever input you're using to feed sound from the TV@nywhere Master to your sound card.  On my system MSI Radio will actually un-mute Line In when I run it and re-mute when I exit.
Thirdly, when MSI Radio does misbehave and not shut up on exit, I can usually get it to hush by running and then exiting MSI PVS aka WinDVR.
Fourthly, I've noticed that my MSI Radio only fails to shut up if I click the Settings button while it is running.  Once I get the settings set, it doesn't give my any more problems as long as I can resist doublechecking my settings.
Correction: one problem.  It always mutes my master recording balance when it runs, meaning that anything I record with MSI Radio or PVS will be nothing but silence.  I have no idea what that's about.

• Bad MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3)? Diagnostic available?

I have an i7-2600K installed on a MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3) board that quit booting Windows 7 the other day. The boot would proceed to the point where the four color swatches start swirling around to make the MS flag and then the screen freezes and nothing more happens.  The system will boot Memtest86+ v4.2 and that reports no memory problems after running for many hours/passes.  I have stripped the system of everything but one 4Gb stick of memory, the SATA DVD drive and a new/blank/different HDD than was present when the problem started. The video card has been removed and I'm now using on-board video. The lasted available version of the BIOS was flashed and both the default BIOS settings and also a BIOS configuration with most hardware disabled have been tried. Different SATA ports have been tried as well as SATA and IDE modes. Still the behavior does not change.
I've created both 32 & 64 bit Ubuntu boot CDs and both will start to boot but hang. A "FalconFour’s Ultimate Boot CD" will boot and display a menu but both the miniXP and mini Linux environments hang when I try to start them. Windows 7 & Windows XP installation disks hang after a minute or two of starting up.
I do not have a compatible second CPU or motherboard to swap into the system to check if that helps.
So far I have only found versions of the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool that run under Windows.
Is there a stand-alone version of it (or something similar) or one that will run under DOS available?
Are there other troubleshooting steps I should be trying?
Thanks!

At this point the parts left in the box that are collectively still misbehaving are:
Intel BX80623I72600K (i7-2600K Sandy Bridge)
MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3) motherboard
G.SKILL F3-12800CL7D-8GBXH (16Gb total but only 4Gb installed at the moment)
WD WDBAAZ0020HNC-NRSN (WD Caviar Black 2TB 7200 RPM SATA)
ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS (24x CD/DVD SATA R/W)
Corsair Gold AX850 (CMPSU-850AX)    power supply
Antec P183 V3 case
The system started with more but this is what's left after weeding out the parts that did not impact the problem.
FWIW either the HDD or the DVD drive could go too because the problem occurs if I try to boot from either with the other removed.

• Unable to capture video with MSI StarForce 822 GeForce 3!

I have a MSI StarForce 822 GeForce3 graphics card with 64 MB DDR SDRAM on it. I have VGA Out, as well as TV-out (AV), TV-out (S-video), and TV-in(?) (S-video).
This brings me to two questions:
First, I have NEVER been able to figure out how to use the TV-in (S-video) port. I have tried numerous programs designed to capture video, including the one that came with the graphics card, and none of them recognize the card's TV-in. Do you have any recommendations as to how to use this port to capture video?
Second, in reading through the online manual for the graphics card on the company's website (under the name G3 Pro-VT64D MS-8822), I saw that the card supposedly has the capability of "High-quality HDTV/DVD playback" (8822 v2.0.pdf, page 8 ). However, in playing back DVD's through the card's s-video output onto my HDTV-ready monitor, I definately do not see HD quality videos. Could explain why this is the case?
I have an assignment coming up where I must do some video-editing work, and thus I am posed with a situation where I need to capture video using this card (and I can't afford to buy something new for the moment).
Thanks for your help.
Charles Bergmeier

If you have the Video Capture Driver installed then the video capture program should see it. On MSI site version 1.16 of the driver is available for download.
If you still have problems (e.g. too many frames lost) you can try using Virtual VCR (worked best in my case).

• MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU video lock-ups

Hello,
I have a 3 month old MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU.  I am running Windows XP Professional and I am having a periodic lock-up where the screen will show blinking colored blocks and the system will freeze.  Sometimes just hitting reset will cure the problem.  Other times, hitting reset will create two vertical stripes of colored blocks scrolling down the screen.  I have used the board on two entirely separate systems (One with AMD Athlon 2000+, Gainward GeForce 4200, 512 MB Samsung 2700 DDR, Western Digital Expert HD (tried both IDE #1 and RAID controller) (Other System, Athlon 1800+, a different Gainward Geforce 4200, 256 Crucial 2700 DDR, an older Maxtor hard drive).  In either system, every once in a while, the system will freeze as described above (it has happened in Netscape 7.0, Microsoft Word 2000, America's Army game).
I have played around with the bios settings, reformatted hard drives, tried various revisions of the nvidia display drivers, swapped out video cards, etc.  Any ideas?  Do I have a bad board?  Do I need to flash the BIOS?  If the board is bad, what do I need to do to return it?
Thanks,
Matt Gumaer

The second system has a 330 watt enermax power supply.  With the new system I put together, I put virtually the same board (MSI KT3 Ultra 2 with bluetooth and RAID), everything is the same as my first system (except the KT3 Ultra-ARU) and the stability is fine.  So, I'm reasonably confident its not the power supply.

• MSI Forum HQ USB flashing tool!!!

Hi guys,
We the forum team have developed  a new way of flashing.
You no longer need a floppy or anything, just an USB-stick.
The tool has been tested together with MSI and as far as we have done our testing, there are no problems at all.
As long as the USB-stick is FAT or FAT32 formatted!
However, flashing is allways risky, so if it goes bad it's your own fault, but that goes for all flashing you do.
This tool is intended to flash MSI retail motherboards and laptops,
but if needs you can use any other machine to prepare the necessary stuffs and the USB stick there,
before move the USB stick to the msi product that you want to flash.
The way it works is simple: Download the package and download the BIOS from the MSI website that you want to flash.
The rest is straight forward.
Make sure that your board is set to be able to boot from USB.
So turn on USB Legacy Support in the BIOS.
Boot and press F11 to get the boot-popup and select your USB-device to boot.
(some boards have a different key, like K8N Master uses ESC for the boot-menu)
What ever you do, make sure you read all warnings!
The forum nor MSI is responsible if it fails for you.
Nor is this software supported by MSI technical support!
Please report problems/buggs if you find them.
currently supported OS ( both 32 & 64 bit):
Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 (also Windows in Virtualbox under Linux!)
(all kind of versions)
NOTE: If you are having problems getting your USB device to boot correctly, you may need to format it correctly as the geometry data may be incorrect. You can do that by pickup option "Fix My USB key" from the Tool or by using >>> THIS <<< tool here! For future usage you can skip this step, it need to be done only once if your stick need adjustment.
This topic is for discussion of and help with the USB flash tool only. If you have a problem with your PC and need help then do not hijack this topic, please start your own new topic in the correct area of this forum!

This file is a antivirus testing program?
Hi Max,
"This file is a antivirus testing program? "
yes, the latest version accidentally really become a test for any AV....
in latest 1.13b Avast! no more report false positive,
but all others AV software starting reporting a different false positive results:(all AV listed didn't report false positive problem in a provisional version) Avast! was fixed and no more report the false passivity and passed, but all other AV software started to be a lot confused...
Kaspersky Anti-Virus - Proactive Defense Warning: Riskware detected.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2nd ID - Backdoor.Win32.Iroffer.af
Dr Solomon's:  probably found Zafi.D.Virus
Symantec: Bloodhound.Overpacked / * Overpacked when a potentially unknown virus is found using Symantec Bloodhound technology */
Panda: Win32:Trojan-gen.(Mytob.U.Mod)
Mcafe: Worm.W32/Bakain
Dr.Web: Trojan.Blakhal
Bit.Defender: Trojan.JS.Obsq.Gen
Just to clarify one more time, all things listed are false alert coused and exist in latest version only due Avast! fix.(1.13b)
didn't continue to test with rest of AV...
only Avast! and NOD32 report no problem detected.
in 1.13a all false positive listed above doesn't exist, but only Avast! report false positive.
Hoverer, the wave of false positive mess has been resolved along with Avast! false positive as well.
New version is ready, 1.13c:
- fixed false positive wave which confusing most of AV software. (all AV do not report any problems anymore)
- fixed 3 minor bugs:
           * after finished work the tool do not quit normal as expected and hang instead, that happend in x32bit OS only when used has been asked for reboot and answered with "No". e.g. in described specified case.
           * 4th mainboard filter report positive results in some Biostart mainboard and this cause tool to false ID some Biostar board as MSI one.
           * added missing drive letter as USB key choice ("I")

Hello everyone,
Here is my submission for the contest with 7 wallpapers (I know it's a lot... but I was inspired so... ^^ )
For the 2 first ones, I wanted some classic good looking wallpapers with the MSI Dragon being the center of it, with some high quality effects. So here they are, a bright version and a dark one.
Hope you guys like it.
For the 5 next ones, I tried something really different. More in an advertising campaign way. Some minimalist looking wallpapers, trying to focus on simple things, no shadow effect. Art on it's purest form, simple but well thought.
I asked myself why people would chose MSI instead of another brand, so I figured the people who already know that. So I first started with the "Gamers know why" because it's obvious, then went to an iconic e-sport legend ("Legends Know Why") Mr. Patrik 'cArn' Sättermon, I think he and the Fnatic team clearly represent why people should chose MSI. So I used the Fnatic team for the third one "Winners know why", they are clearly one of the best multigaming team of the world and are sponsored by MSI for quite a few years now. (The picture is from the IEM 5 For the 4th one, I noticed that I start to see more and more MSI laptops around me, at college etc, so I thought that "The World knows why". And for the last one I tried to represent the spirit around the MSI Dragon and the whole Gaming part of MSI, that feeling of POWER. So I tried to make that last one a combination of the 2 styles. Representing the Power coming out of the Dragon... in a minimalist way. So here's "Unleash the Dragon". I hope I succeed. And I really hope you like my work. It took me several hours to complete that "campaign" and I'm really proud of it. I used the "#" system in it because as I made it as an advertising campaign, I thought it would be nice if everyone could share that spirit easily.
The picture of cArn and the one of the Fnatic team are from the internet, the rest comes from my personal pictures (textures and such) and of course everything is homemade.
Cheers.

• MSI 4200 Locking Ups

Problem:
Installed new MSI 4200 v/c and now when I start any game that uses 3d graphics the entire system locks within 15-90 seconds . One of two things happens everytime - The screen freezes or the screen goes black and the sound continues. With my older v/c ASUS 7700 there are no such problems on this computer.......it is smooth
Setup:
-350 Watt power supply (bought today just in case old one was not strong enough)
-Gigabyte GA-7VRX with newest bios (R6)
-Athlon XP 1800+ CPU
-2X256 DDR RAM (PC2700 if I remember right)
-Dlink 10/100 NIC
-Creative LIVE Sound Card
-CDROM & CD-RW (Plextor)
-Windows XP pro with SP1 and all other updates
-Mcaffee retail 6 virus scanner
** Nothing over clocked or tweaked in the Bios **
So Far:
- Updated to Detonator 40.79 drivers (also tried MSI ones)
- Updated Via 4in1 drivers to 433V
- Added Via test Driver 1 (recommended by others on another site)
Please advise how to make this card work or tell me where and how to get a full refund. The retail store I got it from wants a 25% restocking fee if it is returned, which I'm not willing to pay because my older card is fine. So it is this MSI card or a compatibility issue and I meet all the base requirements and more.
Thank you,
Kent

Did you see the number?
Quote
If you contact Gigabyte at 626-854-9338 you can obtain an RMA # to have your board reworked. To my knowledge, they are not replacing motherboards for newer revisions. If you are adamant about getting your board replaced and not reworked, you should contact your vendor, but please do not expect the vendor to go beyond their normal RMA policies to rectify this issue. They just sell the board. They will end up having to send back a number of motherboards for reworking just like the end users.
I realise that the article is dated July of this year but you could at least see where it gets you.
Otherwise, pay the restocking fee. You could end up without your system for some time if GGBite allows the RMA. You then have to ask yourself if being without the board is acceptable. What is your downtime worth?
Man that really sucks :(

• Lock Ups with MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR [Resolved] thnx!

Well this is a first for me and it is driving me nucking futs !,
I have been building my own pc's for at least 10 years now and never had a problem where I have even needed to come to a forum like this.  So as I see there are some very helpful and knowledgable peeps (nice work guys) here I thought I would ask as I have read through all stickies etc... and have not actually seen an answer to the problems of locking up.  I am fast forming the opinion that this motherboard has a serious problem that MSI have not fixed yet.  Anyway here is some info on the spec and what I have tried so far :
Have checked for viruses...
Did a fresh format and re-install...
Unplugged all that is not essential to run...
Symptoms..
Cannot write files to make a DVD in any authoring program.. it locks up after about 5 minutes
Locks up in most Games, some run for 5 mins then other times run for hours
Cannot run some setup.exe files (Like Zone Alarm Pro)
Sometimes (locks up just surfing)
Microsoft Word seems to mess up a lot and have to run the repair option..

I am about seriously considering giving this board some cement legs and drowning it !  This is my first (and probably last) MSI board and cannot believe the problems so many seem to have.  Maybe best and quickest option is to do just that and go buy a decent board.
Any help much appreciated.

Hi,
First of all thanks to all for the help, and CJLittle...LMAO !  My car is a Scooby and a nice blue paint job !  Believe it or not they assured me all this would work.. I bought it in one package and even questioned it.  Also to be fair up until then they had always been very good... shows they have no zero about 3200XP 200 fsbetc...  When I went back with the power supply and told them they changed it out and let me off on the extra money it should have been.
The crashes are as follows :-
Locks up after random amounts of time in games, sometimes dont even get to load it up at all, other times I can play 2 hours.  When the games lock up usually there is a high pitch squeal and can only get out of it by reset or power off.
I cannot install Zone Alarm Pro or Agnitum Outpost are 2 anyway (there are others) these just come up with the installer screen and hangs there, I have to go to Task Manager to close them down, unlike the lock up in games.
The cooler is the Coolermaster Jet... and the temperature is more than acceptable (right now is 44 C) so I cannot see that at all being a factor.
leds are on on the d bracket when it locks, I did not know of this function and will check it out. Thanks for that tip.
Question from me: would the 2700 RAM cause these lockups ?  I would have thought it would just not work at all ?  If this is possible then I will go and change out the RAM as tuning it down to 166 (if it is possible) does not appeal to me !  But yes it may show what the problem is.
Thanks again, will see what happens...

• Month Owned MSI GE60 Apache Pro Fan Issues

Hi everyone,
I have had my MSI GE60 Apachce Pro 15" laptop for a little over a month now.
For the first month, I could barely hear the fans when leaving the laptop idle or using non-power hungry applications that do not involve gaming, such as browsing the web or watching videos. Now, however,  the fan seems to always be running at a medium intensity, even when idle. As soon as I boot up the laptop, the fan is much more noisy than it used to be and stays that way.
The program HWinfo64 shows my CPU temperature at usually 41 degrees Celsius. Moreover, turning on the Cooler Blaster feature does not decrease the advertised 5-10% temperatures either. In fact, it increases the heat to around 42-43 degrees Celsius.
My desk is usually completely dust free, so I do not think dust is the issue here. I will have to open up the back to be completely sure, but I do not want to void my warranty for something as silly as cleaning it out (There is a void sticker right above one of the necessary screws to remove the back casing. I will contact MSI to inquire about this because I read that MSI will allow owners to remove this sticker in certain locations without voiding the warranty).
Could there be any other reason besides dust that could make my fans this noisy? Does anyone have suggestions on improving it? Thank you.

Try to remove battery and hold power button for 5 sec.
I tried that a few times, but it did not work. The fan noise is becoming unbearable tbh. Considering selling it now :/
