Msql 5.0.18-standard/mysql prefpane???

Hi,
I installed the 64bit version of the MAC OS X package (MYSQL) (on my G5) including the system prefpane;
I disabled the startupitem in /etc/hostconfig (MYSQLCOM=-NO-)
I have set a root password for the mysql root account;
/usr/local/mysql/data/ looks like this:
332806 drwxr-x--- 10 mysql mysql 340B Mar 19 17:41 data/
I can use terminal to start and stop mysql:
to start I use : sudo mysqld_safe
to stop I use: mysqladmin shutdown -u root -p
when i try to use the MySQL prefpane
it switches to :
MYSQL Server Status and Automatically Start MySQL Server on Startup tab;
up to now no problem.
When I try to start the server by clicking the "START MySQL Server"
I have to athenticate myself NAME: and Password:
I use my admin account name and password:
(sometimes it asks me twice)
all that happens after I press return is the spinning beachball;
unless I force quit System Preferences it will spin forever.....
i worked with the mysql manual but have not found anything of use
any suggestions
DP 2GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   IBook

Hi J.J,
If your details are right you are using a G5 and installed the 64 bit pre-compiled version.Do not run the prefpane installer;as it screws up everything;I don't know why ,but it did it.
No fear, you won't have to use terminal.
When you open the .dmg file of mysql you will find an Icon called MySQL.prefPane.(Since I don't remember the correct position within he distribution, you have to look for it).
Then drag and drop it to /Library/PreferencePanes.....
after this fix disk permissions just to ensure everything got the right access permissions.
this is what worked for me....hope this helps...

  • MySQL.prefPane Jammed. How to Start MySQL through it?

Sorry for my english. You can reply in french, if you can.
I completely removed my old version of MySQL to put the last one (5.5.11 64bits). When I want to stop or start it in using the Stop MySQL Server button the System Preferences jams! I have to Force Quit the System Preferences.
It's the same thing when I'm trying to put a tick inside the box "Automatically Start MySQL Server on Startup". After putting my password and click OK, the system jams. The use of Terminal is needed to start and stop MySQL.
    Any ideas to help me?
    Thank you for your support

  • MySQL 5.0 Standard distribution is not working with Xsan on my Xserve.

    Hello,
until now we have always used on our Xservers the MySQL 5.0 Standard distribution downloadable from www.mysql.com (thus not the MySQL 4.1 that is shipped with Mac OS X 10.4 Server) with its datadir located on an internal disk of the Xserve. Since we have recently set up our Xsan we should now migrate the MySQL datadir to a directory on our 4 Tb Xsan volume, but doing so MySQL 5.0 no longer starts and even a myisamchk complains that the FYI tables are not MyIsam tables (but they are, I just copied the whole "local" datadir to the Xsan volume).
I then tried to configure the "standard" MySQL 4.1 that Apple ships with Mac OS X Server so that it uses the datadir on the Xsan volume and it starts with no problems, but we need MySQL 5.0! The problem seems to be therefore an incompatibility between the MySQLCOM distribution and the Xsan volumes.
Our setup is: an Xserve G5 dual 2 GHz running Mac OS X 10.4.8 and Xsan 1.4.1, MySQL 5.0.26,.
I wish to know if anyone else has encountered similar problems and how this has been eventually fixed.
    Thank you, Fabrizio

Well, we actually have quite a few reasons to host the MySQL data on Xsan:
    - concurrent access: among other data, the Xsan should also store some MySQL databases actually used by a single web server hosting many virtual hosts and user-managed folders that we want to "split" on two Xserves for both load balancing and failover purposes. The idea is to keep the configuration for all virtual hosts and user folders on both servers activating only one half of them per server, so that in case one server fails the other can easily take its place.
    - space: we have more than 4TB on Xsan, versus the 250 GB mirrored disks of the Xserve. Our databases actually occupy few gigabytes, but they will surely grow in the future.
    - money: our company paid more than 100.000 euros for 14 Xserve, 2 Xserve Raid units and 10 Xsan licenses, and we want to use them as much as possible.
    - database: performance is not a big concern for us while affordability is mandatory. BTW, one of the larger and most frequently used databases is composed by large blobs of data (it's used to store PDF files).
We purchased all these Apple server products because we always loved Macs and their OS: I still think that Mac OS X is the perfect OS for desktops/notebooks and Mac OS X Server/Xsan running on the Xserve platform are a good and relatively cheap choice for video editing and HPC. But while time goes by and more and more (often inexplicable) problems occur on our Xservers under stress, I also guess that the Apple server line is not the better choice for what we need to do: web hosting, email and authentication services, DHCP, network traffic analysis, and so on, for a big university.
We had always used Sun servers with Solaris up to few years ago and they never gave us a single problem after many years of use (and misuse), then Mac OS X 10.0.4 was relased...

  • Using MySql and PHP with Dreamweaver on a Mac

    Hello all,
As always if the answers to these questions are obscenely
    obvious please humour me.
I use XHTML and CSS in my websites and realise that it is
time that I dabbled with SSI. So I've started using PHP.
However, I have been following the installation directions of
MySql and am running into problems. I am installing the relavent
software and am then unable to find it on my Mac, the startup files
are there but the actual MySql data appears to not be installed
despite my computer telling me it is...... I am using a G3 running
OSX 10.4 is this good enough? I noticed talk of needing a PowerPC
or Intel mac. Is this the case?
Also, would I need MySql installed on my actual computer if
the my servers have it already? And does Dreamweaver 8 have both of
    these programs installed as standard?
If you could help out I would be very appreciative as I would
like to learn this stuff and I appear to be struggling at the
    outset....
    Cheers

MySQL is a relational database management system that
    comprises a
database server and several utility programs. Although you
    install it
like any other program on a Mac, the similarity stops there.
First, the point about PowerPC and Intel Macs is that there
    are
different versions of the MySQL installer for each type of
    processor.
I'm pretty sure that a G3 is OK, but you must choose the
    PowerPC version
of MySQL, not the 64-bit or x86 (Intel Mac) version.
Once you have installed MySQL, you need to drag the
    MySQL.PrefPane icon
from the disk image onto your System Preferences. This
    installs a
Preference Pane that enables you to start and stop MySQL. The
    Preference
Pane has an option to start up MySQL automatically, but in my
experience, it doesn't work on Tiger. You need to open the
    Preference
Pane, and click Start MySQL Server each time you start your
    computer.
The best way to work with MySQL is to use a graphical
    interface, such as
phpMyAdmin. As Osgood has mentioned, I have written a book
    about PHP and
Dreamweaver, which goes into all the necessary details. It's
    also very
Mac-friendly with separate instructions where necessary for
    PC and Mac.

I do not think MCPKit will help you on the iPhone. It is just an Objective-C wrapper around the standard mysql libraries which are not available for the iPhone. Your best bet would be to post on the mysql forums and see if you can get any help.
You can try extracting the mysql client library source code into a separate static library project, and see if you can get it to build for the iPhone.

  • MySQL socket problems after system update

I have been using my new Mac Mini Snow Leopard server as Squeezebox Server for over a month wihtout problems. After a system update this weekend I started to get MySQL socket errors after reboot.
Started; log sequence number 0 43655
091213 17:10:04 [ERROR] Can't start server : Bind on unix socket: Invalid argument
091213 17:10:04 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server running on socket: /Users/admin/Library/Caches/Squeezebox/squeezebox-mysql.sock ?
    091213 17:10:04 [ERROR] Aborting
Although I have posted this issue to the Squeezebox forum (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72510) where it primarily belongs to I wanted to hear if anyone maybe had an idea what recent changes in Apple updates could cause this? Maybe someone else has similar MySQL problems with other installations? I am a bit desperate by now so any idea or hint is appreciated.

Here was my solution/workaround for this issue to the rest of us poor fellas that have too fight around with Squeezebox server from time to time:
I setup SBS to use the the standard MySQL installation on Mac OS X SL Server since I could get it to run without problems from Server Admin. Here are the instruction from the SBS Wiki:
    http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/ExistingMySQLInstance
However, I had to deviate a bit from that in order to make it work since it seems a bit outdated.
First deviation was necessary for the MySQL access privileges. Notice the extra grant to slimserver@localhost. Don't ask me why but this worked. I do also not know whether both grants would be necessary because I haven't tried it. Feel free to improve it:
    # mysql -u admin_user -p
    Enter password: admin_password
    Welcome to the MySQL monitor.
Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 103 to server version: 5.0.24a-log
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.
    mysql> create database slimserver;
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.22 sec)
    mysql> grant all on slimserver.* to slimserver identified by 'slimserver_password';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.13 sec)
    mysql> grant all on slimserver.* to slimserver@localhost identified by 'slimserver_password';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.13 sec)
    mysql> flush privileges;
    Query OK,
    mysql> quit
There were also slight differences necessary in the preferences setup because MySQL socket location was different from the standard one. Here are my db entries ~/Library/Application Support/Squeezebox/server.prefs:
    dbpassword: slimserver_password
    dbsource: dbi:mysql:database=slimserver;mysql_socket=/var/mysql/mysql.sock
    dbusername: slimserver
    Notice the extra mysql_socket configuration.

  • PHP/MySQL Help Needed

I'm a beginner with this PHP/MySQL language, but I'm using
Dreamweaver CS3 to help things along. I've set up my database with
my host (using PHPmyAdmin) and put in a table with some fields.
Then I went into Dreamweaver and set up everything and it saw the
database name perfectly. Then I made a recordset and it saw the
fields just fine. I then made an input page to put the data into
the database and that went off without a hitch. I then made a basic
webpage with nothing but the call to display 2 of the fields in my
database (I did the test in dreamweaver and it saw all the data I
populated my database with perfectly). I then told it to preview in
Firefox and got a blank page... Ok I must have done something
wrong, so I put in some basic text just so I could see if even that
would show up correctly. Then I previewed in Firefox again and not
only did it show up, but the 2 fields showed up as well! Yea! So I
made some changes to the fields I wanted to show and again did a
Preview in Firefox. I was again treated to a blank page. Not even
my basic text was showing up. I went back to Dreamweaver and added
some more text... preview... works perfectly showing everything. I
refresh the page and it's blank. I close Firefox and preview again.
It's a blank page, but for the heck of it I decide to View Source
and lo and behold all the data is there. I close the source and try
reloading the page... blank. I'm at a loss. Any idea why this might
    be happening?

Sorry, I haven't tested anything on an Intel Mac yet. Testing
    everything
on Vista for my new Dreamweaver book has given me enough of a
    headache.
However, I'm pretty sure that my editor has an Intel Mac, and
    he
followed the instructions in "PHP Solutions" without any
    major hiccups.
(They're pretty much the same as in the Flash book.)
Isn't there a MySQL.prefPane icon in the MySQL installation
    package? I
have found that MySQL won't start automatically on 10.4 (it
    did on
10.3), but as long as you install the prefPane, you should be
    able to go
    in and start it manually.

  • MySql on Leopard?

I just downloaded and installed mysql-5.1.23-rc-osx10.4-i686.dmg.
There were no error messages in the installation, but when I try to start the server from the Preferences pane, the button goes blue for a second, but the server fails to start. I looked at the console messages, there were none, but the system log has the following:
    Feb 21 16:21:13 waltsmac kernel[0]: Finder[138] Unable to clear quarantine `mysql-5.1.23-rc-osx10.4-i686.pkg': 30

    Feb 21 16:22:49 waltsmac authexec[3793]: executing /Library/PreferencePanes/MySQL.prefPane/Contents/Resources/mahelper
What does "Unable to clear quarantine" mean? -- it sounds like a message from an anti-virus or something.
What do I need to do to get this working?
    TIA,
    Walt

I did search before posting, and I learned that the server version comes with MySql, and there was some advice about using xattr to clear the Quarantine. That didn't work - xattr said it didn't know anything about MySql, either generically or when I spelled out the whole filename.
There was a reference to "xattr -d com.apple.quarantine" but that appears to defeat the whole purpose of the quarantine in the first place. If it exists like an anti-virus quarantine, to keep bad stuff off my Mac, I'm not sure I want to do that!
Can anyone either explain what / how the quarantine works, or point me to a place I can learn more?
For some reason, this installation did NOT pop up the dialog box about "this was downloaded from the Internet, are you sure you want to install it?" - which seems to be the normal response to quarantine. I've seen that fairly often.
    Walt
    EDIT:
I got brave/foolish, and cd'd to the directory where the disk image lived and did
    xattr -d com.apple.quarantine "mysql-5.1.23-rc-osx10.4-i686.dmg"
then reinstalled MySql. Now the quarantine messages are gone, but still MySql will not start.

  • Advantages of DataFX over standard JDBC?  RedFX?

So I've been looking into DataFX, and it seems interesting; however someone I work with thinks there is no point to it over just using a standard MYSQL DB and connecting through Connector/J.
    http://www.javafxdata.org/
IT seems like it's supposed to make life easier so I'm curious about it, and how much we use it? Do we still use Normal SQL statements, or is everything done with the DataSources within DataFX? We still need to connect and all of that I would assume?
I'm also looking to have my data stored up on a server, so I'm interested in RedFX also http://www.redfx.org/technology.html .
Any help or insight is appreciated :)

DataFX however provides many more means of providing the data for JavaFX controls.
And with that kind of reasoning we'd all still be programming in Assembly. Because hey - its possible so what is the point of going higher level?

  • Creator and MySQL

    Hi,
When adding a MySQL DataSource, I can see the schema and even view the data. When I try and bind a component (Output Text) via right click, Bind to Database... the Bind to Database window pops up, but I don't see anything in the box?
If there was a problem with the driver, I wouldn't expect to be able to view the schema and view the data via the Server Navigator. Test Connection from the Modify Data Source dialog also is successful. Anyone else having a problem like this and perhaps a solution?
OS: SuSE 9.0 (with latest updates)
    Creater (with latest updates)
    MySQL: 4.0.18-standard
    MySQL Driver is 3.0.6-stable
    Thanks,
    Pete

    Thanks.
I solved it. I will post what it was in case someone makes the same mistake I did.
When adding the mysql datasource, I manually entered the Driver Class Name with what I had in my JBoss config file(and worked). I entered com.mysql.jdbc.Driver. After reading that your Binding Window worked and you used the same settings I do, I went back and clicked the suggest button(to the right of the Driver Class Name field in the Edit Database Server Types diaglog). It filled the driver class name field with org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver. All is working now.
    Thanks,

  • MySQL broken out of the box - error 2002.

MySQL is broken out of the box - 10.5.2 server. Brand new Xserve, an untouched OS X Server installation, no tinkering was done *at all*.
    Here's what I did:
    1. Opened Server Admin.
    2. Added MySQL service.
    3. Went to Settings.
    4. Changed "Database location" to be on another, faster drive in the Xserve.
    5. Clicked "Start MySQL" button
    6. Opened Terminal, typed in "mysql" and hit Return.
    What do I get?
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
There's no mysql.sock file there, nor in /temp. Running lsof while the mysql daemon is "started up" shows there is a mysql.sock file in /var/mysql though. Very odd.
Any ideas? I'd like to avoid rolling my own install of MySQL, and stick with the built-in version.

Might [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302977|http://docs.info.apple.c om/article.html?artnum=302977] help here? That's for Mac OS X Server Tiger 10.4.4 and not Leopard 10.5 yes, but looks applicable here.
And FWIW, this basic case is fairly standard MySQL socket behavior on various platforms. That the GUI apparently allowed you to shoot yourself in the foot here is another discussion.

  • Leopard PHP MySQL socket problems

I'm running a default Mac OS X 10.5 Apache2 installation locally, with PHP and MySQL tacked on. I'm running into some trouble running MySQL queries from PHP, namely:
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock'
It appears that PHP was compiled with the configuration command '--with-mysql-sock=/var/mysql' but in Terminal the mysqladmin binary reports the UNIX socket as /tmp/mysql.sock. A check reveals that there is indeed a /tmp/mysql.sock, but no /var/mysql/mysql.sock. This appears to be one of those directory differences between Darwin and the standard MySQL distribution.
Anyhow, I really don't know the best way to attempt to patch this up even after reading suggestions in the MySQL manual. Setting up an option file for mysql to point to /var/mysql didn't improve matters, nor did explicitly setting socket settings in my PHP config file.
I'm more of a front-end developer not well versed in back end configuration jazz, so any input would be appreciated.

the other way to fix this is to edit /etc/php.ini and set the following:
    mysql.default_port = /tmp/mysql.sock
    mysqli.default_port = /tmp/mysql.sock
    mysql.default_sock = /tmp/mysql.sock
    mysqli.default_sock = /tmp/mysql.sock

Turns out its all the fault of those dozy buggers at msSql.
    Theres

You'd think by now the idiots at mysql would have simply

It turns out to be neither the 32 bit version or the 64 bit

a completley different one with 86 after it (whatever 86
