Multi-user setup aka not quite sharing

Would it be possible for several users on different machines to share a single source of music? I'd like my ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media folder to be on a shared volume and have several users connect to this folder. Each user would have their own playlists, counts, ratings, etc.
Is this possible? How would I set each user up? I typically have the options for keeping iTunes organized and copy files selected. Would I change either of these?
Thanks for any help.
Jeff

click here for a possible solution.
also, since iTunes 9 there is _*Home Sharing*_, however, for *home sharing* to work, iTunes on all machines would need to be authorized to play/use content purchased by all iTunes store accounts used for purchasing.

  • User Settings in Multi-user setup?

We are using two new CS5 editors in our news department.  We set the machines up on our Domain partly for being able to use NTFS permissions and because our IT department hates stand alone machines.
The issue we are having is that each person logs in as a Domain User which give similar rights as a local user would have.  The editor seems to work fine and we don't seem to have any problems with doing this other than each user must setup about 15 settings for the first time.
They have to change the location of where the project is created to the 500 GB E:\ drive that we have shared on the network (this is for being able to copy and entire project from one editor to the other), then they have to change the DV-NTSC preset for correct audio tracks and then change the General tab settings for Playback through DV Realtime Settings (why is this no longer the default, doesn't anyone still use tape??).  Then they save a preset.  After that the preset will give the correct audio and sequence settings except the "Playback Settings" does not seem to track from one project to the next.
Then they have to change the source channel mapping to Mono so the two tracks we record in the field, Interview/standup on track 1 and Natural sound on track two don't come in as stereo audio. (this one seems to stay for new projects under that user)
Then they have to change the audio hardware to enable the "line in" for recording tracks from our mixer.
PHEW!!!, as you can see this is a time consuming annoying issue to have every user have to do this.
Is there a way to make some of these settings the default for any user that uses the PC?  I don't want to go back to a shared project setup like we had under Avid as it caused a lot of issues with people deleting other peoples stuff.
Any idea's on making these settings stick would be great,  Do I need to allow "Domain Users" full write acces to the Premiere Program Files directory?
    Thank you,

The main reason for the separate accounts is for allowing each user to have a folder in the E:\ Drive on each editor will be the 1 TB Scratch Drive.  These system are only going to be doing DV video for now and will use only basic edits for News packages and VO/SOT's and such.  Nothing complicated unless they want to.  When users leave every two years (Market 195) we can just delete the user and their folder to clear them out, which gets rid of all the garbage people seem to leave on the desktop.
We have two editors and a common problem with them being stand alone (as they were with the avid systems) is a reporter would go in to Edit 1 and capture or import from camera (nNovia Media Pack) the video for a news story.  Then due to having to rush out to get another interview or breaking news they would leave for a while.  When they get back there is another user in that bay using it for the next 30 minutes to an hour and so that reporter is forced for time issues to re-capture the same content into Edit 2.  This causes wasted time and frustration.
Other stations in our company use a server with large amounts of storage, each user has a folder on that server with all their content.  Because you can not edit across the network drives due to latency issues, they copy the Project folder with all their captured clips and files to the local drive of the editor, and go to work editing.  Then after working on that project for a while they copy it back to the server that is Backed up and has many TB of storage.
We can't afford to build that server now so I am settling for them to work on each editors Local 1 TB Scratch Disk in a Folder called "Edit 1 Projects"
Then when a user logs into that folder and creates a Sub Folder with their name, e.g. "Sam Johnson" that becomes their folder.  Then I am having them create individual project folders under that, e.g. "School graduation VO", "Police shooting PKG".  Because that user "Sam Johnson" created the folder he has full rights to it by using the "Creator Owner" NTFS permission I set on the Parent Folder to propagate to the child folders.  All other Domain Users can read and use other peoples video, but they do not get "Modify" rights so no user can delete other users stuff. (Another issue we had problems with on the old editor) Only and Admin or in our case the news director can delete stuff.
The plan behind all of this is the reporter would be able to, in the same scenario I outlined above, navigate the network to the shared drive of the other editor and copy/move the subfolder they need over the network.  After the copy (which includes the captured files and project file) they could open that project and keep working.  With Gigabit speed this should not take long for smaller projects.
I haven't tested this other than it is similar to the Benchmark project I downloaded as a Zip.  When I extracted that, I was able to open it as all the source files were included.  I am sure there would be issues when the project/files gets so large that the time to copy is as long as re-importing from the tape/camera.
Another benefit of this is users can navigate their projects on the two editors from their desk computer in the newsroom.  With a bit of training they will be able to delete the .avi files they no longer need.  Due to the video being the largest files, they can easily do cleanup without going into the bay at all. If they want to keep a great clip of B-Roll they shot, they can burn a Data DVD from their desk.  All of this is possible being on the domain and having user rights passed from one machine to another through their network login.
If anyone knows of a major flaw to my idea I am not thinking of let me know,
    Thanks

  • Multi user setup for TM questions

I just bought a 500G external drive for use with TM, however, before I try to set everything up, I have a few questions.
The 500G drive will be the TM drive for 2 macs (mini and MB). The mini has 3 users (me, wife and daughter). The MB has 2 (me home and me work). I would like to have all 3 accounts on the mini and the 'me home' account to use the 500G usb drive for TM, attached to the mini (for now).
Do I need to create seperate partitions for each user/machine? Or can I just use it as 1 big partition? (I will be excluding system files from the TM backups).
Other question: How can I setup the usb drive to always be shared? Right now, I have it setup as shared by my admin account on the mini. As soon as that account logs out, the share goes away. Not the best situation for TM backups.
Thanks for any info you can provide,
    David

Whether to partition or not to partition:
You do not need to partition. Time Machine will take care of saving separate backups for each user.
The biggest reason to partition the backup drive is if you want to save other "stuff" on the drive besides your TM backups. Then you would create a Time Machine backup partition, and an "other stuff" partition.
That being said, in your case you may want to consider creating 2 partitions, one for your Mini and one for your MacBook. But you don't need to create a separate partition for each user.
The only reason to create a separate partition for 1 specific user would be if you want to make sure that user account has plenty of room for backups (or you want to limit the size of a users backup space). For example: Since Time Machine erases older backups to make room for new ones, its conceivable that your daughter could be downloading music or movies that get backed up a lot, leaving less space for you and your wife.
How to set up USB drive to always be shared
Normally, I would say that all you have to do is login as each user one at a time and set up sharing the same way for all of them. But I will be interested to see if this works for you. Please report back. What I am curious about is whether Time Machine on your MacBook will get confused when it tires to do a backup if different users are logged into the Mini at different times. Will the MacBook think they are different shares, or will it properly realize that its the same share but that another user just happens to be logged in at the moment. Please report back.
    Excluding System files
Like the other poster, I would suggest that you do not exclude system files. At least include them for the admin account on each machine. The reason is that in a "catastrophic" event, it will be much easier and quicker for you to get back up and running. All you would need to do is boot from the Leopard DVD (by holding down C during startup). Then after the language screen, ignore the main widow and goto "utilities" in the menubar, and restore your system from Time Machine backup. This will get you back up and running in one step (albeit a big long step). But by doing this you wont have to reinstall Leopard, then reinstall your applications one by one (reentering software keys for those that require it) and then restore all your lost documents. Just a suggestion. For the non admin users, you could exclude everything except their home folder (make sure not to exclude their library).
So to summarize this absurdly long post:
For what its worth I would:
    1) Create 2 partitions. 1 for the Mini and 1 for the MacBook.
    2) For the Admin account on the Mini and the MacBook DO NOT exclude anything.
    3) For all other accounts, exclude everything EXCEPT each users home folder.
    4) Enable sharing for your external drive independently for each user on you mini (start with your Admin account). Report back please. I am curious if your MacBook properly finds the drive when an account other than the Admin account is logged into your Mini.

  • DIS Install fails to find notes.ini if multi-user notes install

Yesterday I attempted to install the WebCenter Integration into a Citrix image and it fails with the error 'Error 2343: Specified path is empty'. After some experimenting on a physical machine I have been able to confirm the installer program fails if the Lotus Notes client has been installed with the multi-user option (what we require) but succeeds if it installed as single user.  With Lotus if it's installed as single user the data directory will be in the program install directory, if it's multi-user then it's in the user's profile. . Looking at the installer log you can see it can't locate the notes.ini file when it's a multi-user install.

Install Notes as single user then switch to multi-user, there is a section in the guide here http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28280_01/doc.1111/e10624/setup.htm#DISUS147 that tells you how to manually edit the Notes.ini file

  • Z4: Word and OneDrive don't work with Multi-User

Hi,We are sharing the Z4 tablet among 4 in my family. For this I'm using the Android multiple users. The pre-installed MS Word worked for the main user or owner perfectly. Then I tried to install it for the second and third and fourth user. In all cases after starting Word for these users the message came up "download of additional content required". When clicking on "download" the app crashes. Then recently an update of Word was delivered via Google Play. Now the same happens for the main user. Deinstalling for all four users and reinstalling from Google Play didn't solve the issue. For MS OneDrive the issue is: it works for the main user. For the other users the Playstore gives the error message: "another user on this devices installed an incompatible version of OneDrive. Deinstall this first". Deinstalling and reinstalling didn't helped that issue either. Only one of the four users can use OneDrive. Any ideas on how to solve this? I do have the BKB50 and Word was my main reason to go for that combination with the Z4.Regards,Zampano

Microsoft Office for Android email support replied only with a standardized email. Beside of pointing to some FAQ it just offers to call the support hotline. I'll have to wait for the office hours then. In the meantime: has anyone tried using Word in a Multi-User setup on the Z4? Maybe it's just an issue here at me...Thx and Best Regards Zampano

  • Multi-User Support

I have all of my photos saved on a file server in my house.  I am using Photoshop Elements 11 on my desktop to catalog all of my photos. I am doing things like tagging photos and the people recogonition features.
If I install Photoshop Elements on my wife's laptop and she accesses the same photos on the file share, will she see the tags?

I don't think there is software that both has face recgnition and multi-user support. Normally, multi-user support is available in upper-end packages, while face recognition is usually available in consumer packages.
If you want true multi-user support, one such product is called Daminion.
I wonder if Adobe will catch on to this feature reqeust.
I'm sure they know there are people who want multi-user libraries. In my opinion, they choose not to add this feature because the cost to develop this feature would blow up the cost of Photoshop Elements to the point where people wouldn't buy it. Which is probably the same reason multi-user libraries are not available in Lightroom either.

  • Multi-users sharing iTunes data on Tiger?

Dear friends, I've spent some time unsuccesfully searching for an answer on this - can anyone help please?!
I have used my iMac g4 for about 3 years and share it mostly with my daughter. Last week I decided to set her up with her own account using the multi-user facility. However, I want her to be able to access out iTunes music which is in my account. I tried moving the iTunes music folder into the shared area, but then neither of us could access music, we both had empty music libraries.
Is there a simple way of allowing new users to access both the existing iTunes or other data without making copies of all the music in both user's accounts? Ta muchly.

Hello there and thanks for your input!
Actually, I am able to run iTunes with my music files in the new account I set up for my daughter, without iTunes being loaded in my own account. I noticed during reading many pages of help that you do need iTunes loaded in the 'orginators' account for any Macs that you have in a network (up to 5 in the network).
In my case I copied my iTunes Music library into my Public area and then logged into my daughter account to 'point it' to my music library. It does look as if I can delete and add music too, although I haven't tried that yet.
I've just pasted in the following from iTunes help (that I followed): -
Learn how different accounts on an single computer with iTunes can share music.
Tip: If you are trying to share music between multiple computers see one of the following articles:
Windows: Sharing your iTunes library across computers
Mac OS X: Sharing your iTunes library across computers
If you want to share music with other users on your computer , then follow the steps below.
To share your music with other accounts on the computer:
Mac OS X (Click for more)
    Quit iTunes.
Locate your iTunes Music Folder. It is stored by default:
    ~/Music/iTunes or ~/Documents/iTunes/.
These folders cannot be accessed by other accounts on the computer. In order for other users to be able to access your music, you must move it to a publicly accessible location.
The Public folder in your home directory (~/Public), or to another folder outside your home directory that other users have access to, such as /Users/Shared. Tip: The tilde "~" refers to your home folder. For more information see Mac OS X: Using Your Home Directory.
Drag the iTunes Music Folder to a publicly accessible location. Important: Do not move the iTunes folder, the iTunes 4 Music Library file or the iTunes Library.xml file.
    Open iTunes.
From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
    Click Advanced.
    Click the Change button.
Navigate in the Change Music Folder Location dialog to the location of your iTunes Music folder.
    Click Choose.
To listen to another account's music files:
    Open iTunes.
From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
    Click Advanced.
Deselect the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library file" option.
    Click OK.
From the File menu, choose Add File to Library. Note: Windows users can also choose Add Folder to Library to add a folder of songs.
Navigate in the Add File To Library window to the location where the other user's music is saved (the iTunes Music folder in the case above).
    Click Open.
Repeat these steps for each account that is listening to shared music.
When another user of the computer has imported new music from CD, repeat steps 6 through 8 to add the music to your library.
Thanks for you link to the iPhoto help - I'm sure I will want to do that next!!
    Regards
    Paul

  • I have windows, one computer but multi users. home sharing is on. how can i share music between users on one computer?

I have windows.  One computer but multi users.  Home sharing is on. 2 apple accounts-1 per user. 4 devices-2 iphones and 2 ipods per user.  How can we share music  on one computer between 2 users?

Hi Justinece, I've solved the problem in this way:
In my wife user profile I've set in itunes settings/advanced the path to my music library: /Users/"MY NAME"/Music/iTunes/Itunes media.
Than, from my wife profile using my administrator user and password I've set the "read/write" privileges on the above mentioned folder.
Finally I've added the folder in my wife's library taking care to not duplicate it ( leave blank the flag in itunes setting/advanced).
I really don't understand what's the use of home sharing...

you still need to run the "cron scripts" manually, once or twice a month is plenty, but there is an enhancement since 10.4.2 that allows to sleep at night, and meant to have the tasks automatically run. Not yet fully reliable though.

I purchased the multi-user iworks (yes back when it was new, 2009 or 2010 and recently had to replace my white imac's hard drive (but didn't pay to fix the CD drive).  My iworks does not have a serial number on the box and now that my CD drive isn't working how can I reinstall this software?

Buy or borrow an external USB optical drive.
See the confirmation email or covering letter to obtain the serial number. If you have lost it, contact the supplier.

  • Since iPad is not a multi user device,

I'm interested in how other users deal with this.
My 1st iPad (I'll purchase more) is a coffee table device available to family and friends. Since I have many Apple products and confidential information that I don't want to share with friends/family/friends of family, I have taken the follow steps:
    1. Not synced with Mobile Me, even though I subscribe, I don't want other people to sync to my master computers/databases. They can't make changes to my personal data.
    2. I created a new email ID only used by the iPad. All mail sent by "other people" are sent from this ID.
    3. Create Mail rules to forward general purpose family email to the iPad email ID.
    4. Create subfolder/smartfolders of contacts, calendars, photos, etc and just download those subsets during sync.
    5. Entrys into the iPad calendar upload into my master calendar but don't change anything I have set.
    6. Contacts contain a small subset of family, friends. People that the typical user would email.
The iPhone, iPod have all been "personal devices". Information loaded wasn't as critical because that device was in one's personal possession. The iPad in many cases crosses that line into a multiuser device with single user support. All your personal data shouldn't be loaded for others to see/modify.
    Your thoughts?

It's true, Capt. Fred, there's no security as yet on the iPad. Pages doesn't even let you save anything with a passcode. There are third party apps that will secure things (like +Documents to Go+ and Safe ) so you can secure files if you want to. You can also, of course, secure the entire iPad as you could the iPhone. It even has that feature that wipes the whole thing clean after 10 wrong password entries. But other than that, the whole thing is open and it does not support more than one user. There has been discussion of that elsewhere in this forum. In order for the OS to support a Windows or Mac like multi user account system, the thing would need to get a bit more complex than Apple wants just now, I think. But as more and more users migrate to the iPad for pretty much full time use, there will be more and more clamoring for more complexity and functionality. So it's a matter of time, I think. Already Apple is going to multitasking in the upcoming OS 4.0 upgrade for iPad and latest iPhones. My only question is, will my first run iPad support these inevitable future upgrades? We'll see, I guess. Sure hope so.

  • Shared calendar items in multi-user calendar view

    Hi!
    I have another question:
The new multi-user Calendar-view is great - but we have one thing, which
    is confusing to our users:
User A has a shared calendar (the owner of this shared calendar is User
B). It is clear, that User A can see appointments of this shared
calendar in his "main Calendar" if this shared calendar is "enabled".
But User A cannot see the calendar items of this foreign shared
calendar, if he changes to the new multi-user - view.
Does this work as designed or is it a bug?
    Thanks a lot

Reason: Start method is running. The start method of milestone/multi-user is responsible for (among other things), running all the /etc/rc2.d scripts. If you've placed a startup script in there and it's hanging, you'll see this behavior. From memory, I think there's a 30 minute timeout before it gives up and continues.
During the problem period, you probably want to do a 'ps -ef | grep rc' and look for any rc scripts running. That will probably point to a startup script hanging.
    DarrenThanks Darren,
That was the problem. A hung script in rc2.d/
What is odd, is that this script is the same on many of our machines and no problems have been found until now. Thanks for your help. Killing that processes made everything start properly.

  • I need a true multi-user contact management that do not involve the web

I have over 11,000+ contact in my contact data base and it is getting really slow, especailly when it try to update with iCloud.  I need a  true multi-user contact management that do not involve the web. i.e. I prefer thety sync as most of the time, I do not have access to internet at all!  I would perfer it wil work with apple contact in some way, but I need a robust contact data base... sort of the older style CRM without the web, but with sneaker net ablity and true client server speed!  I really do not feel like wriitng it in a relationship data base and do the hard work and prefer to just pay and get a top notch product.  Address book server seems to be great except I am running moutain lion and it does not work under that OS!
Any suggesytino would be sincerely appreciated.

As my friends above have pointed out, the sweet spot on the JVC is the size of a postage stamp; move a few degrees in any direction and the image takes a trip into the dumper. Even that can be worked with except when you're cheek to jowl with a producer and dp - one of whom had extremely bad breath - looking over a cut for approval. The screen is incredibly reflective so you'll see something from the next county over. Other than these two rather large problems, the imaging of the JVC looks nice.
The Flanders are decent products and I would like to see them in use other than the horrid conditions at NAB, but I wouldn't go overboard with praise for them like some of the grazers do on the Creative Cow. They have a 30 day no questions asked return policy and that gives you a chance to use them which is nice. I really hate their big white logo, if I was to get one I'd have them remove it first.
$3,000 to $4,000? You really want my opinion? Find a good used Sony BVM or Ikegami HTM, something with low hours on the tube or something that has been recently retubed. Those animals are still out there. Maybe by the time it dies all this flat panel bs may have worked itself out.
