Multicam in Premiere CC

I have a few questions that I can't seem to find on my own.  With multicam, the workflow has changed.  Used to I could line up my clips in a sequence, then drag and drop that sequence into a new one to do the edits.  Now I have to select the clips and make a new sequence, it would seem.  I'm having to line up the clips by seeing the audio waveform since I don't have a timecode or other sync methods.  My issue is that on Premiere 5.5 I could edit the audio in the original timeline and apply a track effect with the audio tools I needed. Then it would already be there in the new sequence.  Is there any way to do this now?  Each week I use the previous week's setup as a template since all my graphics and bumpers are stored in there.  Help please!

You're welcome.

  • Adding video transitions using Multicam in Premiere CC not working

Just tried to a video transition to a Multicam timeline between a camera switch and it does add the transition in the timeline but only plays back as a cut as if no transition was applied. Also, using the shortcut CTRL D doesn't add the transition but does it show up in the history that it applied a transition.
I used a Dissolve transition and it shows the video dissolving between the 2 video source in the transition Effects Control window, just doesn't work in the timeline when playing it back. Rendering the timeline doesn't work either,  still a cut transition.
Actually, just tried the CTRL D shortcut and it is now working.
Now the transition shows up when going to the Export menu and looking at the video in the Preview window and when exported the dissolve is there so the only problem is that the video transitions can't be seen when playing from the timeline.
Decided to close down Premiere, restart it and reload the project and now the transition works in the timeline.
Actually, here what happens. You can't see transitions when the Program monitor is in Multicam mode, you need to switch is back to Composite mode then the transition will preview when playing from the timeline. Now I just checked and you can scrub through the transition and see it when the Program monitor is in the Multicam mode.

  • Multicam weirdness - Premiere CC Mac

I've been loving the new multicam features but I just hit a problem.  I'm using Premiere CC on a Mac, all updated.  I cut a three camera multicam last week and I just wanted to look at a few parts again to see if I choose the best angle.  When I set the Program Monitor to Multi-Camera, the screen goes black, no angles at all are displayed.  When I set it to Composite, the single angle displayed looks fine.
You can see from the timeline that all three angles are loaded and active (so nothing is turned off in the Nest).  I also double checked and the timeline and the Multicam is still active, not flattened.  Of the four multicam sequences I edited last week (all in the same project), two work as expected and two don't.
Here is the sequence opened with the Program monitor set to Composite:
Here it is with multicam selected:

I just found out some more info.  I opened and older, auto-save of the project and the multicam sequence *was* working correcty.  I reviewed it and made a few corrections (all was going well).  Then I changed to the color-correcting workspace.  When I left that and went back to the editing-workspace two of my four sequences open in the Timeline were closed.  When I re-opened them, the multicam window was black.
Looks like a bug to me.  I can't wait for the "October 15th" update!

  • HELP understanding multicam in Premiere CC2014

So I use multi-cam editing in Premiere Pro CS6 every day, so I understand the concept. Now that we've updated to CC2014, I just can't seem to figure it out.
For starters, I used to just synch all my clips in a normal timeline, and then nest that timeline in a new sequence, right click, choose "Multi-Cam Sequence" and I was good to go. I just opened up the dedicated multi-cam window and I was all set to edit by live switching between cameras, the play head followed along in the timeline.
So I tried this in CC2014, since there is no dedicated multi-cam window, I have to double click the multi-cam nest and the source monitor transforms into a multi-cam window. All good. But when I select different cameras, the audio switches with the current camera, where as previously it would just add up all the nested audio no matter which camera I'm on. I have since discovered that from the program monitor options, if I select "Multi Camera" as the view (more on this in a moment) it will now allow me to select or deselect "Multi Camera Audio follows Video." This option seems to have effect in the source monitor either way. What would happen if I had a separate track of just audio? Do I have no way to select this "camera" as the source audio?
If I play from inside the Source monitor, while playing I can switch between cameras and the audio will stay on the last selected camera. Ok, I think, it's kind of working... but then when I stop to see the edits that I made while live switching, it turns out that NO EDITS were made in the time line. It just changes the camera angle of the whole track, no edits, no live switching. I'm utterly lost. The yellow boarder around the current camera angle never turns red for me, indicating that it isn't recoding anything. Also the play head does not move in the timeline.
Now I've discovered that the Program monitor settings has it's own option for multi-cam. So I switch from "Composite View" to "Multi-Camera" and this is what I see:
The current selected camera angle is there, but then there is black. I currently have 4 different camera angle layers. Clicking on either of these two multi-camera Program views does nothing.
TLDR version: I can't get the selected audio track to stay put, and I can't get multi cam to live switch. Whats going on here?
    -denez

You need to make the multicam button in the button editor in the Program Monitor visible first.
    Stack the clips in sequence
Go to Project window and make a new sequence from this sequence and call it e.g. MC,
Enable Multicam in the timeline (right click nest) and in the Program Monitor (wrench).
Then you are good to go.

  • Multicam Sync Premiere Pro CC

    So, one more problem.
I can't sync my audio in PPro CC,  I can sync videos, but my aditional audios (recorder by zoom and tascam) can't sync. I tried to sync two cameras 4 audios and can't sync, I tried Sync just one audio and one camera and can't sync, both with the "audio" option in multicam sync. Seems like is "ignoring" my external audio.
    Have somebody the same problem?

So I guess I'm going to use Plural Eyes again, WHAT A SHAME, this is a very disapointing update from Adobe, I was very excited with the release, but all that I read is just complaints!

  • Multicam quirks in Premiere CC

Anyone else seeing inconsistent and quirky behavior with new multicam in Premiere CC?
For example, my normal workflow is to have the multicam/program window on my right hand monitor and the timeline open in my left monitor. I drag the playhead in the timeline through the project, watch what the various camera shots are, and cut to cameras as needed via a ctrl+click, adding transitions when necessary. In CS6 this worked very well.
However in CC a couple of issues have come up that makes me wish for CS6, unless someone has some suggestions. All video is running from an adequately speedy external RAID. Usually working with Canon XF video and AVCHD clips.
The new "combined" program and multicam view doesn't pan out. I have an external SDI monitor and under CS6 I could see the final video, effects, transitions and everything on the external monitor. Now with CC when I'm in "multicam mode" I CANNOT see any effects, transitions, etc., just the raw cuts between camera views. To see effects and such I have to temporarily drop to "non-multicam" view (via button or shift+0) and then switch back. Probably someone is going to say "you shouldn't do it this way, you should first go through and choose your camera shots then go back through and add effects" but I don't care...I use to be able to work this way in CS6, why can't we in CC? Maybe I'm missing something.
There are a lot of playhead and multicam edit quirks introduced, possibly as a results of the new combined multicam window. When dragging the playhead in the timeline frequently I'll stop dragging, tap spacebar to hit play, and the playhead will jump back in time to some spot 10-20 seconds back. I can't explain this nor does it seem to happen in any reproducible way. To make matters worse if I'm dragging the playhead and find a spot I need to switch cameras I'll stop dragging, select the camera, only to cringe and find that the playhead jumped back 10 seconds and now my camera edit is in the wrong place! I tried to mitigate this by dragging the playhead in the program/mutlicam window (instead of the timeline window), but I don't like this because the audio waveform isn't right there in my line of sight anymore and also it introduced new gremlins. Quite often I would ctrl+click a camera and the yellow "select" rectangle would remain on the previous camera. But in my timeline and external monitor the new camera is showing! Erk, this little bugs are very annoying.EDIT: After more testing this bug is easily reproducible. WIth a multicam sequence drag the playhead in the timeline window far down in to the sequence and immediately hit spacebar, drag back near the beginning and hit play. Doing this repeatedly will eventually cause the playhead "jump" back to a previous position. It does not seem to happen when dragging the playhead in the multicam window. It does not seem to happen when in non-multicam mode and dragging the timeline playhead. So end result: the "jump" bug happens when in multicam mode and dragging the timeline playhead.
When switching between sequences very frequently the newly selected sequence will be marked "red" under the workbar and nothing will show on the external monitor. But if I quickly switch between multicam and non-multicam and back to multicam the red will dissappear and everything is normal.
Any tips would be appreciated. I'm not quite ready to dump CC since there are lots of appreciated performance improvements (spanned AVCHD clips are rock solid so far...fingers crossed).

  • Top 15 Issues/Fixes Needed in the next Premiere Pro release/update (CS6.5 or CS7)

I’m excited for what’s coming next in Premiere Pro CS6.5 or CS7 (whichever update is next). As a former FCP7 user myself, Premiere CS6 was a quick and necessary switch (especially after changing the main keyboard shortcuts back to what I was used to). I’ve since gone back to FCP7 on occasion for certain things and I can tell you that I’m so glad I’ve switched. For all the headaches and serious errors that I still get daily/weekly with Premiere Pro CS6, it’s still definitely a big step up. I'm encouraged by staff members like Mitch W. that have expressed confidence that many of these issues will be resolved in the next release. Here is my personal list of “Top 15 issues/fixes” needed in the current Premiere Pro CS6…
(Adobe STAFF...feel free to print this out and hand it to the engineers responsible for making changes )
    1) The infamous multicam FLAW. Needing no introduction…when you are editing your video in the multicam window and you hit pause or stop Premiere has decided that’s a great time to make a cut on your timeline and also switch angles back to the original angle whether you like it or not. You cannot stop ever while editing multicam without Premiere making these unwanted cuts and angle changes. Awful. Multicam in PPro is otherwise pretty nice, but this issue is terribly counter-productive especially when you are editing longer complex multicam sequences. Imagine if every time you hit pause or stop in the regular timeline it made a cut there and switched clips. Ugh. You get my point.
    2) The audio meters/levels do not work while in the multicam window. A staff member in the forums (I think it was you) said this was a bug. Hope it will get fixed. The audio levels work in every other window and its essential to be able to keep an eye on the levels while editing multicam.
    3) Ticktime.cpp-207 error. Ugh. What a nightmare. I have confidence that it will be fixed soon. Mitch W. from the forums is my new hero for taking on this error. How to replicate it?…simply have 6 (or 7) or more clips with the warp stabilizer effect added on the same timeline as a nested multicam clip and you get this error upon reopening your project. The more warp stabilizers you use, the more times you’ll have to hit “continue” to get through the error before you can open your project or export it to AME. I deal with this every single day because all my projects use these two elements. Most of my projects I have to hit “continue” on the error message upwards of 350-450 times to open my projects. Gets old fast.
    4) Icon View order control. When you display all your clips in icon view instead of a list view (In the project window), there is no metadata to allow you to put the clips in order somehow (or at least maintain the order that you have in the list). There are roundabout workarounds, but c’mon.
    5) Warp Stabilizer fixes…it is an AMAZING tool (far, far, far better than smoothcam in FCP7) BUT…it has it’s issues. Since I use hundreds of times/week (no exaggeration) I know it’s functions/flaws really well. The issues with Warp Stabilizer:
    a) #3 above
    b) Toggle OFF the effect after it’s applied and then hit Analyze again and PPro crashes. (easy to avoid but annoying bug)
    c) If a clip is in the middle of stabilizing (not just analyzing…but the final step labeled “analyzing”) when Auto-save comes up…most of the time PPro freezes and crashes.
    d) The DEFAULT “method” (in the settings for Warp Stabilizer) should NOT be “Subspace Warp”…it should be “Position, Scale, Rotation”. Why? It’s FAAAAARRRR better and more efficient. 95 out of 100 times it causes MUCH less “wobble” in the final stabilized clips AND most importantly 95 out of 100 times it scales the video less. Way better method.
    6) The ability to open multiple projects simultaneously. As simple as FCP7 had it…or even better…as cool and efficient as FCPX does it would be nice.
    7) The ability to mark a clip and not just a point on a timeline (because if you move the clip, the marker doesn’t go with it). I know you can use “Clip Marker” but it's very limiting, can't be moved, can't add notes, can't advance to the next marker (as far as I know). Also a marker list like FCPX has would be nice so you can see your markers all in a list at a glance and adjust them as needed.
    8) Ability to select a clip in the Project window and find out where it’s used in the timeline. I LOVE how you can do the reverse and take a clip in the timeline and “Reveal in Project Window” but it would really help to go the other way around. Dealing with several hundred clips for every project I’ve missed this feature from time to time (FCPX handles this really well).
    9) Add a through-edit indicator in timeline and “re-join clips” option. If you cut a clip but keep both clips together it’s just one continuous clip. But I really hope Premiere adds the not only an indicator of some sort (like FCP7′s way of having two small red triangles facing each other on that cut) so you know it’s one continuous clip BUT ALSO the ability to right-click and “re-join” the two clips into one.
    10) When clip is double-clicked in timeline, CTI position in source viewer should match location in timeline. This one is pretty annoying and a fix would be incredibly helpful. The way it is now is very counter-productive. Definitely hope this gets fixed ASAP.
    11) Better border controls for images/videos. Can’t do much with images right now in PPro. At least allow to customize the color and size/strength of it’s borders and shadows.
    12) Better support for Mac/Apple's top end computers/GPU's. I'm still surprised that 2011 top of the line iMac cards (AMD 6970M) that have 2gb of ram are not supported. I’m sure/I hope 2012 iMac’s will be supported with their new Nvidia GPU’s…but I’ll hold out hope that the top iMac (up until 3 months ago) is supported at least at it’s full power. All around better Mac support would be great considering the wave of new users coming over from FCP.
    13) Opacity/Transparency issues with EXPORTED videos with Cross Dissolves, etc. For some odd reason videos exported from Premiere CS6 have issues with cross dissolves or minor transparency. I’ll try to explain…in the program window of PPro CS6 cross dissolves look fine. Also, if you take a clip and stack it on top of another clip and put the top clip at say 99% opacity instead of 100 it looks like it should in PPro. But, if you export the clips you’ll quickly see that there are issues. It’s almost like the exported videos dissolve from 5 to 95. They skip the subtle beginning (0-5%) and subtle end (95-100%) of any fade. A clip in PPro as described above that is on top of another but set at 99% will look more like 90-95% in the exported file ESPECIALLY if the two clips are contrasting (eg. top layer dark, bottom layer with bright elements). It’s like the opposit of ease-in/ease-out. I have to ease-in/ease-out of every dissolve to avoid this issue…and even then, it’s not THAT much of an “ease” as one would hope. Another user in a forum once posted a video that shows how abruptly exported videos end their transparency changes…see: THIS SAMPLE VIDEO  Perhaps this is a GPU/processing issue with AME vs. Premiere Pro but whatever it is, it should be fixed so videos you export look like the videos you edited!
    14) Better control in Creative Cloud over which devices are “activated/deactivated”  We have 3 computers and it would be nice if one could log in to their Creative Cloud account and see a list of which devices they have and just toggle on/off which one’s are activated/deactivated. This is especially helpful when you are mobile and forget to deactivate one of your two home/office devices so you’re stuck now until you get back to the home/office to deactivate it. This is not a Premiere thing, but just a general wish.
    15) Ability to sync multicam clips automatically using the audio. Plural eyes apparently does this well. Would be nice to have it built into Premiere like FCPX does. Select all the shots you want to sync, One button click, wait a few seconds, done.
That’s my top 15. Everything else is awesome in my opinion for what I do 10 hours a day 6-7 days a week. I’ve included bug reports/feature requests for all of these at one point but if you are someone else reading this go to the following link and ask for these issues to be fixed: FEATURE REQUEST/BUG REPORT
I wish Adobe did smaller updates more often. Because even if they were smaller updates, we’d at least know you are working on fixing some of these issues that have plagued this NLE for years. Holding off fixes for one or two big “updates” every year is tough to deal with in a world of the ever updating apps we live and play with daily on our phones. I realize Premiere is a much larger scale and far more professional than a phone app, but hopefully you get my point. Here’s to hoping the next release (NAB 2013?) resolves all my top 15 issues. Here’s to hoping that these issues will be resolved sooner than later so I can stop raising hell in various forums. I’m honestly ready to start praising and defending Premiere Pro instead of griping about it’s bugs and flaws. It’s a fantastic program “on the way” to being the best. I hope.

Nice list, however it does seem a little bit like you may be hoping that Adobe provides the Final Cut 8 package that Apple never delivered on. Having edited primarily with P-Pro for the last decade, I hope Adobe focuses more on getting the next release to run as smooth as CS5x does, strangling and crucifying all the codec and playback bugs that arose in CS6. To me, it appeared that too many of the changes in CS6 were semantic or cosmetic, meant to give a FCP user more familiarity. Why change the name of an edit function from "overlay" to "overwrite" after 15 years? Because it enhances the product, or because that is what Apple called the function in FCP? If Adobe renames the Program Monitor to the "Canvas" with the next release, I think that I might be sick. There were nice additions to the Creative Suite as a whole, but I hope the next Premiere release reverses some missteps made in CS6, and focuses more on stability and enhanced functionality. I also really hope that they have an open ear towards criticism; Apple did not and their users ended up with FCP-X
It saddens me that the fixes I want most in a future release were purposeful changes between CS5x and CS6x.
    1) Provide the options for transport controls in the source and program monitors. All of the users at my office hate that the jog and shuttle were removed in CS6. JKL was an option prior to CS6 and if we liked it we would have used it. I keep reading the justification that this change was meant to save space and streamline the UI. I can't express cordially how much this bothers me to look at the empty wasted space in my CS6 UI where the transport controls should be. The experiment has gone on long enough.
    2) Restore the 3 Way Color Corrector to its previous functionality. The 3 way color corrector has been effectively neutered in CS6. Where in CS5x and earlier releases one could separately target the input/output levels of Highlights, Midtones, and Shadows, CS6 has only a master input/output level control. Why is less control better? Is it a 3-Way Color Corrector or a 1-Way Color Corrector?
    3) Restore Clip and Timeline markers to their previous functionality. I don't even.... I can't. A user shouldn't have to do work arounds to create a modicum of functionality. This again was an attribute that wasn't broken in earlier releases.
    4) Simplify the the task of pasting media into a targeted track. As it is now, pasted items will always go to the lowest activated track instead of the targeted track.
Lastly I would like the Adobe Premiere teams to consider what an amazing accomplishment Premiere CS5x was. Upon CS5's release, a good portion of competitor's workflows became obsolete. CS5.5 refined, stabilized, and expanded functionality.
CS6 changed the UI around, moving or deleting buttons, changed keyboard shortcuts, and renamed functions. Oh, and added hoverscrub, you know...like FCPX. In exchanged there was loss of functionality, stability issues and broken codecs.
I really hope the next release is more like CS5x and less like FCPX

  • Multicam Sequence Error

I have a 3-camera multicam sequence that is 26 minutes long. I've gone through and edited the sequence, cutting between cameras. But for some reason when I close my session and reopen, the sequence changes at 15:48. What happens is that camera 2 and 3 are dropped, and camera one becomes a freeze frame. The first part of the sequence is fine, but it just changes at 15:48 every time.
I can't figure out why this is happening, and I've already re-cut the sequence twice only to have the same problem. Anyone else experienced this before?

There does seem to be a bug with multicam and Premiere Pro CC.

  • How can I check exactly what effects each version of Adobe Premiere can do

I am at a loss as to how to decide if I need the best one of an old primitive version. Is the only way to see what they can do to trial each of them out? Is there no detailed list of features for each one?
    Thanks

Unless you do a lot of multicam and often go back and try cutting the multicam a second time. Another bug there.
That bug was fixed for new projects going forward, thank god with Premiere CC update 7.0.1  Also, I find editing multicam a much more enjoyable experience in CC simply because in in CS6 when you stopped or paused during your multicam edit, Premiere would make a cut and often switch angles on you in your timeline. So I'd say CC for sure. It's not kink free quite yet, but it's getting there...

  • More multicam weirdness - CC

Okay... I have an unusual multicam with an even more unusual problem.
We are making short videos for a Spanish class.  These are mostly three cameras with additional, non-sync audio for each of the main actors.  Each video is shot in short takes with a little overlap that need to be put together in a multicam sequence.
I used the new audio sync feature to (successfully!) sync up about 70 files.  They auto sorted into a dozen different multiclips and, for the most part, Premiere was close to perfect!  This is wonderful since my Spanish is "no muy buena"!
I opened each of the multiclips in the timeline.  It is important that I include the audio from each of the actors so I turned all of the relevant audio tracks on.  I selected the best take from each multiclip and pasted these into a new sequence with the intent of making that into a multicam sequence the old fashioned way.  I suspect this is my problem.
When I drag this new nest to the new item icon I get a single video and audio track and all of the audio tracks play at once (all very good).  BUT when I enable the Multi-Camera most of the audio tracks (all of the useful ones) go away even though they were happily playing muxed in the nest before I enabled Multi-Camera!
Any ideas on why this is happening or how I could proceed differently?  I'd really like to use the multi-camera feature but it will be difficult to edit each little piece and then bring it into a finished sequence.
Here are some screen grabs to help:
My original, hand-made, nest called "ALL_techshop"
The new item created when "ALL_techshop" is dragged onto the new item icon.  All of the audio channels that I have turned on paly simultaneously
Enabling the Multi-Camera turns off all of the useful channels:

There may be a new cool simple way or button to take care of this, but if I understand your post correctly...did you try option+selecting just the video tracks only and then right-clicking and selecting "nest" then right-click again and select multi-camera>enable. That is how I used to do it on CS6 and it worked recently on CC. That way your video is nested all on one track but your audio remains untouched. I don't know why when you did it some of the tracks turned off. Might be something simple that's not being toggled on or off, not sure. But you can try what I suggested for now and see if it helps.
HOWEVER...please be aware before you start your multicam edit that there is a huge, giant, ugly, ridiculously unacceptable bug with multicam in Premiere Pro CC right now that has essentially broken the multicam experience. If you don't know about it, read about it below or you may be left losing hours of editing work:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1236698?tstart=0
    Good luck!

  • Multicam More Than 4?

Is this ever going to be a reality?  Why in the world can we only multicam 4 cameras?  I constantly shoot with 5-9 cameras and doing multicam on Premiere is a mess and I have to do all sorts of crazy work-arounds to use all my footage.
I love Premiere and everything Adobe, but this is so annoying.  I certainly can't be the only one out there.
My edit team and I cringe every time we have a 8 camera multicam shoot because of Premiere's 4 camera limitation.

Totally agree.  While we're on the topic, it would be nice to be able to have the 4/9/12 monitors (whatever that number is) be able to be on one window and the main screen on another screen/window.
What I mean is that the 4-camera multicam monitor window  should NOT be attached to your program monitor (or whatever it's called... the one that shows you what camera is live).
I would ideally have the 4-camera (or more) monitor on one monitor and have the main cut-monitor (program monitor?) on another computer screen for easier editing.... or at least give me that option.
When cutting multicam the little thumbnails and main picture have always seemed way too small to me, but there's nothing you can do about it.... yet.
I have submitted a request too.

  • DV Pal Multicam Preview screen

I am working on a DV Pal 720 x 576 (1.4 pixel ration) 25 fps multicam rock band piece. Multicam worked very well. The only bummer was when in the Multicam mode only the Preview window was extremely pixilated. The 4 playback screens looked fine and after shutting down MC the Record window looked great. It was just a little disconcerting for the clients to see this really crappy image while I was cutting it together. The only other relevent info that that in the Sequence settings, the preview is set to Quicktime DV PAL, DV 25. This is what it defaulted to when I used the Make Sequence button when syncing the clips at first. I don't see any controls for the Multicam Preview monitor anywhere.

I've been using Multicam in Premiere Pro since CS3--both on Windows and the Mac, and I can assure you this isn't normal--the feature is broken with CS5.5 when using Mercury Playback Engine.
In all previous versions, no, the quality isn't as clear as it is in the Program window. Part of this is because the windows always fit to the size of the Multicam window, so you're always getting some resizing going on that makes the image fuzzy. And lately one of my tracks has been AVCHD footage, which shows very strange artifacting that doesn't happen when you play it in a regular timeline. None of this is a big issue though.
The problem with CS5.5 is brand new. I'm using a Mac Pro 3,1 with Lion and a GTX285, and there's another forum post about someone experiencing the exact same problem on Windows. With MPE turned on, this is what the Multicam window looks like:

The resizing probably makes it tough to tell what's happening, so click through for the full-size images. Evan the media pending screen is extremely blocky. CS5 and previous versions didnt look anything like this.
If I turn off MPE in the project settings, suddenly everything is fixed:

If I load this exact same project in CS5 (after it tells me it was saved in a different version and it has to convert it), it looks perfectly fine, with and without MPE turned on.
As far as I can tell all my drivers are up to date--CUDA 4.0.50 installed (and the same thing happened with the 4.0.3whatever version), and 270.0505f01 appears to be the most recent version of the graphics driver--the version that came with Lion. And again, exact same machine, you use CS5 and it's fine.
Sick and tired of paying for upgrades that repeat the same old cycle...something that worked fine 2 versions ago gets broken 1 version ago...the upgrade fixes that problem but breaks something else!! Been dealing with this same old crap as long as I've been an Adobe customer and I'm tired of it!

  • CS6 Multicam "Rendering Required Files"

Did a quick search for "rendering required files" and came up with a number of threads from early-mid 2011 regarding CS5 and 5.5 difficulty with PrPro stopping to render audio files when doing multicam edits. I never experienced that until CS6, and now it's happening frequently on a rather basic multicam edit (one HDV, one XDCam-EX, and one AVCHD, with an extra audio track).
From what I've seen in previous threads, there never was a clear solution to the issue. Anybody shed any more light on it, now a year later with a new version of the software?
Would I be better off to do a mix down of my four audio tracks before doing the multicam, and then nest that on track one and get rid of my other three original tracks?
I'm running an i7-920 OC to 2.8GHz on an Asus P6T6 WS Revo with 24 GB of memory, an SSD OS/Programs, a three-disk RAID-5 Project files, a four-disk RAID-5 Data files, and a standalone 6GB/s SATA for scratch and previews, with a GTX-580 for two monitors and CUDA and a GTX-285 for preview/multicam monitor.

This took me forever to figure out, but I think I have your answer.  When you play back multicam in premiere, it tries to mix all of the audio from your original sequence.  Even though all you hear is the audio from track 1 (at least this was the behavior in previous versions).
My fix for this was to delete all all of the audio clips (besides track 1) in the original nested sequence.  Since I use external audio, I just use the camera audio for syncing purposes anyway.  But that's pretty much what you'll want to do.  Mix down whatever audio you plan on actually using for your project and put that in the sequence with your multicam clip.  Or if you prefer, put it on track 1 of your nested sequence.
Also, you'll want to unlink the audio and video from your multicam clip, and delete any cuts you've made to the audio.  For some reason, edits to the audio clip also cause the "rendering required files" error.  So just delete all of the many audio "clips" you've made throughout the process of editiing your video, saving just one to drag out to the end of your video.  This way you'll only have one long audio clip spanning the entire length of your video.  Bam.  No more rendering required files.

  • Multicam making un-intended cuts

    Hi.
I'm a FCP editor switching to CS5.  I use a lot of multicam in FC, and am trying to get my head around it in premiere.
I'm editing a two camera multicam.  I start on camera 1, I hit record, then hit play.  As I play I'll cut to camera 2, then back to camera 1, then camera 2. If it stop playback whilst on camera 2, Premiere makes another final cut back to camera 1.  If I stop playback on camera 1, then it does not make this cut.
I didn't want to cut back to camera 1, which is why when I stopped playback, I was one camera 2.  Is this me not understanding how multicam works, or is it a feature or bug?
    Cheers
    Jacob.

This "Quirk" sucks.  No software should place an edit when the playback stops - this is beyond rediculous behavior. I have spent the last half hour trying to understand why I couldn't get an edit rhythm going, and it's because of two things, actually - one is that on my Mac, the J-K-L buttons do not always behave well when playing back in multicam mode (specifically the "K" button does not always pause playback - it seems to randomly not work), and when I do stop using the spacebar as opposed to the "K" key, the stopped playback adds an edit where I do not want one!
I understand this playback (reverting to the cam selected before editing playback started) behavior from the explanation above - but that does not mean that the behavior is correct from an editing standpoint - this is a huge problem for me editing in multicam mode. If I have to stop and fix the edit that Premiere puts in every time I stop multicam playback it's a HUGE waste of my time. There should be a way around this. Adobe needs to address this by giving editors a choice between the way it currently behaves and the way that most every editor on the planet expects it to behave - by retaining the last camera selected when playback is stopped.  At the very least this should be a choice.
Overall I am still very underwhelmed by Adobe's multicam implementation. On a Mac it seems very buggy, sluggish at times, prone to problems and I have never been able to have a good edit experience using it yet, and I've been trying for months after defecting from Final Cut to Premiere, first 5.5 and now 6. I have a dual-processor 8-core Mac tower, upgraded RAM to 20GB, bought the Quadro 4000 for Mac card @ almost $1k, and am using blazing fast drives in a RAID 0 array that all together should all provide smooth sailing. Regrettably, using multicam in Premiere on my Mac has NEVER been smooth, and was really unusable prior to CS6.  For all the chest-beating from Adobe about FCP users being able to switch seamlessly to Premiere, the fact is that Adobe Premiere has always been more solid on the PC, and I have tried very hard to make Premiere behave as smoothly as FCP7 when it comes to multicam editing on my Mac (which FCP7 does very well), to no avail, using every recommendation and recommended piece of hardware and software available.
Adobe, please show me the way. I'm trying to be a believer, but I'm having a very difficult time getting through a multicam edit and it's just a very frustrating experience.

  • Multicam record toggle

    Hello
I'm just trying Multicam in Premiere cc2014 / v8.1 for the first time. Syncing using audio is a lifelong prayer answered, very happy with that and generally pleased with the editing experience.
My question is whether it's possible to switch cameras during playback without making a cut? I like to have a few practices to get the feel of the material (4 min sequence on 4 cams) before I actually start making edit decisions. At the moment whenever I switch camera angles it makes a cut. I know I can just 'undo', but I'm curious to know if I can preview angles without making a mess in the timeline.
Also, I can't work out what the 'record on/off toggle' is toggling. As described above, 'record' seems to happen whether this toggle is on or off. If someone could explain to me when and what this actively toggles then I'd be very grateful.
Thanks for any advice on this.

Open the Button Editor and make the record button visible first. Then you can record or hit the shortcut 0.
