Multiple applications on one vs several WL instances

Im working with several different applications and I'm wondering
whats the best way of deploying different applications on a WL-environment.
Will the best way of deploying be to hva one instance pr. application,
or just a single instance with several applications ?
The applications use many of the same classes and have lots of
links to eachother.

It depends on type of different application you have ? If all are
similar type i.e load , business application. Then you can have
one configuration file for all application. In that case, your
one instance can work.
If your business application have different availability , load
then you may need different configurtation file. So in that case,it
make more sense to have more than 1 instance.

If I understand your question, you want multiple contexts. All App Servers/Web Servers allow you to setup multiple contexts. Normally if your root context is in /home/myhome/app_server/
then you would setup multiple contexts by creating a folder for each context:
/home/myhome/app_server/context1/
/home/myhome/app_server/context2/
Each would have their own full application/website. And the way to reference these would be as such:
if the domain, www.mydomain.com, is mapped to /home/myhome/app_server/
www.mydomain.com/context1/
www.mydomain.com/context2/

Problem with multiple applications using one audio output

Hey there, I'm having issues setting up my 5.1 headset seen here (http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/content/x-tatic-digital) to work with multiple applications.
Right now I have audio streaming from a flash video, when I try run "$ speaker-test -c 6" I get the following error:
speaker-test 1.0.25
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
If I try open another application which uses this device, the first application has its sound cut off.
2 more things to note:
- My preference for setup would be audio output through S/PDIF and input through USB, with the USB output disabled (To not waste system resources).
- I unmuted all channels in ALSA, however when I ran the test only 2 channels seemed to be working (Front L&R), it may have been defaulting to the USB connection, in which case, that explains only 2 channels being in use, is there a method of setting the S/PDIF as default system wide?

I can run both at the same time, however I cannot hear any audio. Do I somehow have to change the default device, if so how can I do that?

Restarted system now I get:

Interesting, apparently 2 audio streams are working, however the console thing still doesn't work..?

Didn't last long, now flash crashes and html 5 doesn't work -.-

Flash only works when other audio is active, however it has constant popping sound. I went through the system logs to get the errors of when flash crashes, it's audio crashing it, here's the error:

Installing multiple applications through one application (or package)

I am trying to make an application (or package) that will install multiple programs through the one application. Right now the only way I can see to do this, is to force an application to install another one as a requirement. The easiest example
I can give is iTunes. We customize the iTunes install to lock down features and not install every application that isn't needed in our environment. So technically iTunes actually installs 5 different programs. I need to be able to select
iTunes during an OSD deployment using the MDT UDI Wizard, and it will install iTunes and anything needed for it to work correctly.
I am just using iTunes as an easy example to explain. We have other programs that work in a similar way, or require other applications to be install. My main reason for this request is we have standard engineering applications, but I don't want
them installed on all computers, I want just one option that will in turn install all the standard applications.
I am guessing what I will have to do, is make one install that requires the previous application and installs it, and do that for each application, but this doesn't seam like a good solution as it means I will have to have a separate application only for
this OSD problem.
Is there an easier/correct way of doing this, mainly for OSD?

Dependencies only forces the box to be checked, it doesn't install it in the correct order. We are having another problem in that area. We have an Office add-on that in SC requires a version of office to be installed. We can't set the dependency
for that add-on since we have multiple versions of office, but even if a version of office is selected, it doesn't try to install it before it tries to install the add-on. So the add-on install ends up failing since office isn't installed when it tries
to install, even though it installs afterwards.
This is why I am not considering using dependencies since I can't get it to install in the correct order. If there is a way to enforce the when something gets installed, then yes, this would work for me.

Multiple applications on one Mobile Engine 2.1 SP03

Dear all,
we have implemented an Mobile application (client and server side) which uses sync_bo techology. Now we'd like to implement a new application which could use generic syncronization layer.
Does anyone know if this condition could create some problems (the interaction of two different sync type on one Mobile instance)?
Do you have some suggestions about the development in order to separate these two application logic?

Generic & Smart synchronizations can be combinated without problems. There is one only restriction:
Only one application, which uses smart synchronization, can be deployed on the device per time. If you want to deploy another application, you have to undeploy the previous.
There are no restrictions for the generic sync applications.

Merging Multiple Applications into One

I have two applications that I would like to combine into a single application. Is there a method for doing this?

There is NO real means of combining applications in APEX.
I would do the following:
1) Copy one app to a new application Name & App ID
2)Open up two sessions of APEX (one in IE with one application and new App in FF ) and start adding new features to New App from IE to FF.
I have had to do this once or twice and it is a pain..

If your question is whether you can run multiple instances of WebLogic
          (or multiple applications) on one server, the answer is yes. The only
          problem is, you must have a unique port for each of the servers to run
          on. I.e., they can not all run under port 80 which has obvious
          internet/network implications.
          This also means you have multiple weblogic.properties files etc. for
          each instance.
          We do this with WL5.1 on a Linux 2.4 kernel in developement to allow
          multiple developers run their own instance on one box.

One login for multiple applications

Hi,
I was using HTMLDB 1.6 and followed the following guidlines: one login multiple applications for one login to multiple applications. Basically I set the cookie name the same for both applications. It worked.
Now I've upgraded to HTMLDB 2.0 and this doesn't work anymore. I need to login to each application. Any way around this?

of course I am opening page 9 in a new window. I never had a problem with this but today, in a demo to some executives, the new window apparently came up with the login page and not page 9. Would this be due to a browser setting? Unfortunately, I don't have much info about the laptop they were using.
The demo was still a success!

Run multiple apps from one browser windows with 9ias r2

We are running 9ias r1 with forms 6i as our production server. Users are able to access one html page with multiple links to their applications. They can run one application, keep it running, navigate back to the html page and run a second application.
We are testing 9ias r2 with forms 9i, but when users try to navigate back to the html page to run the second application the first application closes.
Is there a way to have 9ias r2 work the same as r1 and allow users to run multiple application from one html page?

Multiple Application Express Installs on one server

What, if any, restrictions / caveats are there for installing multiple Application Express versions on a single server? We have Application Express 2.2 installed and wondering if we can install Application Express 3.0 also.
With 2.2, we have FLOWS_020200, FLOWS_FILES, and APEX_PUBLIC_USER as database users. Version 3.0 will want to create FLOWS_030000, FLOWS_FILES, and APEX_PUBLIC_USER. Any problems with what I expect will be errors on "user already exists" for FLOWS_FILES and APEX_PUBLIC_USER?

I'm really sorry but this is a typo on my part. It should be "You can't have two different APEX versions on the same instance."
Does it mean that if we install ApEx v3 we will have only ApEx v3?Yes. This is exactly what it means. The installation script automatically detect previous installed APEX (or earlier HTML DB ) version, and upgrade it. You can end up with only one version per instance.

How to install applications for multiple iPads with one ID?

Hey guys,
I have to prepare many iPads for work, and I've found the process to be very redundant. In order to ensure that the applications are tied to the ID of the final client, I have to first create an account under my email, download all the applications and then change the email to the client's. Now when I have to prepare another device, I have to delete the applications in iTunes and re-download them with a new account to make sure they are tied to the next ID. Is there a way to download and sync all the applications under one ID, and not have issue with updates in the future? Keep in mind I'm only installing free applications.

I was referring in particular to the logs that are created by Workshop
itself (in the workshop directory). It creates workshop.log and netui.log.

[Flex 3] One SWF, multiple Applications?

I'm dealing with what might be a unique situation - I need to package multuple Applications within one exported SWF, and switch between which Application is loaded based on flash vars from the page the application will be in. File Size isn't a problem. Every solution I've tried so far has had no dice.
Here is what I've tried:
Subclassing SystemManager (info/create/getDefinitionForName functions) to override what Application is loaded. This didn't work as info/create can't be overriden, and overriding getDefinitionForName and suppling the Application class I want doesn't work either (I get the 1037 getStyle error).
Using a main Application that functions as a dummy holder, and it decides what applications are loaded into a subclassed SWFLoader that addChild()s an Application class instance I supply it with. This works, sort of, with the Application class I supply being loaded, but things like mx:Script and mx:Style aren't respected in the sub-loaded Application. Here is how my subclassed SWFLoader looks (built from cannablized code in the SWFLoader source):

I'm NOT in any way a Terminal Services expert and I need help trying to get an application program working in a multi-user environment.
The issue is that the printer changes for every user that is logged in. The application needs to print NOT to the default printer, but to a "special" printer which is selected in the application... let's call it a label printer to simplify the explanation.
You have your default regular printer, easy for the application to find that one, and then you have a special printer that labels get printed onto. The application needs to know what printer is the label printer. So we allow the user to select that in the
application and the selection is stored in a config file in
C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
I don't have access to the application so I can't change how this works.
In the "regular" world, selecting the label printer driver to use should be per machine, NOT per user. When a new user logs into a machine, the physical printer doesn't go "poof" and a new printer suddenly appear. Same printer for all
users.
Yet in terminal services, the physical machine is "merged" with the virtual machine on the server. And there can be many users logged in at the same time. So each users real machine (and real printer) is injected into the "fake" terminal
services machine. The name of the printers is made unique for each user. So the printers DO go "poof" and change names depending on the user logged into terminal services.
So user "A" logs in and sets up the application to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" (or whatever the name of the printer happens to be), that setting is stored in the ProgramData subfolder, and all is well. Later, user "B" logs
in, and when they print, the application tries to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" which doesn't exist for user B or is only accessible by user A. If user B re-configures, that breaks it for user A.
SOLUTION 1: The way that /should/ work (in my mind) is that you define one "generic" printer in Terminal Services... call it "Virtual Label printer" and when the user wants to print to it, the print job gets re-directed back to whatever
physical printer is actually connected to their local workstation. There is a map of virtual printer to actual printer depending on the current user. The application is told once to print to "Virtual Label Printer" for all users.
SOLUTION 2: Or... there should be some way to make the ProgramData sub folders separate per user. E.g. when user "A" tries to access:
C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
they actually get
C:\UserData\UserA\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
and user "B" gets
C:\UserData\UserB\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
So the question I have is: Does either of those solutions exist hidden somewhere in the setup of terminal server? Or is there another way around this issue that I don't know?

I don't really have a "for sure" answer to this, but because people here can't seem to deal with a question that hasn't been answered I'll provide the best answer I did receive from ServerFault.com user Nathan:
I can feel your pain with using old software on terminal servers ...the solution I've come up with definitely won't scale as it requires some manual configuration, but I've gotten this method to work with our label printers (which require to be
printed to an LPT port...yep, that old).
Share your USB-connected printers to the network on each machine. Then, have the user log in on aunique session for each of them
(a TS account cannot be shared among computers for this to work) and install a network printer pointing to the USB one they shared. Try to use a DNS name to account for possible DHCP movements.
After, it should work. Each user can do this since display names can be identical as long as the ports are different (which they are).
This was clarified by the following series of comments:
I think you are on to something here, and I originally advised the admin to do this. The problem he ran into is that it setup the printer names in the TS as "printer on usersworkstation"
and he could not rename it except to change the "printer" to whatever. E.g. the "on userworkstation" remained. I believe there is another way of installing the printer which avoids this, but I can't find it. Ages ago, one used to do NET
USE LPT2 \\computer\printer password /USER:domain\user /PERSISTENT:YES and then tell the driver to print to LPT2 –  James

You mean in the case where the printers are TCP/IP connected and not local USB / LPT to the users workstation? That makes sense. Wonder if this will work for USB connected printers... –  James

@JamesNewton You'd share the local printer on the client's PC then on the server connect via TCP/IP to it. You'd need static addresses or use DNS names if DHCP, though. –  Nathan

How to associate multiple sites on one standard instance?

I have multiple websites that I want to put on one Standard instance. When I click on the scale link for a given website - it doesn't give me the option to add other websites to the standard instance. It creates a new instance for each website which really
racks up the billing charges. How do you put multiple websites on one standard instance?

The sites were already created and were under the standard instance. I thought it was just running one instance until I saw the credit balance going down quick. When I checked the websites using the new portal - they are actually under 4 web hosting plans.
I changed them back to the free one. Now when I try to change the plan to standard for a website - only that website's plan is changed. The other do not. There is no option for me to put the others in the same instance.
