Multiple-boot

Has anybody already use the multiple-boot capability of Windows 2000 to install LabVIEW-RT on the hard disk and to keep Windows 2000.
In the operational mode, the system will boot directly with LabVIEW-RT. But for maintenance purpose, I would keep Windows 2000 installed on the disk and I won't use the floppy to boot LabVIEW-RT.
If anybody has experience, I am interested. Thanks.

This has not been tried or tested by National Instruments as far as I am aware. I have read through some of the documentation on Microsoft's website and it appears they only support multiple-booting with their other operating systems. You may be successful setting up a dual boot machine (that does not use a floppy to boot into RT) using third party tools.

  • Share between several platforms, dual/multiple boot

    Hi here!!
I review a lot of mozilla docs (out dated or without complete info), forums, googling ... about how to share firefox/thunderbird/ligthing data between platforms on dual/multiple boot system.
Every user in same trouble are repeating (copy/paste) in the solution to share the SAME FULL PROFILE on all platforms. I review profile data and folders and I can see files and config data that are platform dependent; then I think that share FULL PROFILE between is not the best approach, for example Linux and Windows will produce several problems (and a lot of problems with the add-ons)
In these same mozilla docs recommends to share only data and maintain custom profile for each platform, but not more info how to do it.
Please can some kind advanced :) provide some info about the correct approach. Or a better tech info about how is possible the recommendation of sharing same profile between platforms without problems. Because with the current doc info, there is no way to get a clear answer (Almost I can't :~).
    Thx guys!

Thanks, but As I said at first I reviewed mozilla docs too, but mozilla only do mention profiles content or management, but not how to share in multiple platforms or how profile must be created or be treated as cross-plattform.
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data
    https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Multiple_Firefox_Profiles
Some googling and bloging ... a lot of people are saying (repeating coping & pasting same solution), share complete profile between platforms, but this is not correct, in profile folder you can see platform dependent data as in the prefs.js file. And maybe, some schema database issues (but no info about it in mozilla)
I reviewed this doc and all their related links a couple of days ago:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Sharing_a_profile_between_Windows_and_Linux
I'm very apreciate some notes how to do second main way recomended, that sais:
    <blockquote>
" -- Share everything except for the settings, themes, and extensions. Separate profiles are created for each operating system to avoid problems in prefs.js due to Windows naming conventions... ... .... Each profile uses its own extensions directory for extensions and themes, so it doesn't matter if the extensions are operating system specific or not. "
    </blockquote>
The apparent only way to seem is to manually review all .ini and files and review all db schemas ... and manually overwritte they??. But I thin profile is "data", and data must be cross-platform... sure exist some more reliable approach to setup this on sharing platforms.

  • Multiple booting - through esata port, usb, firewire

i'm testing usb, esata, firewire ports for multiple booting and if anyone has also experimented just let me know p.s i remember there was another topic last year about it

I have tried to boot from eSATA, and I discovered a trick.  In the BIOS, you have to switch the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE (aka legacy, compatibility, or just off).
I have a Y450 with a built-in eSATA port and an Intel ICH9 SATA controller.  I  bought an external powered enclosure that has an eSATA connector.  The BIOS would not recognize the external drive, and so wouldn't list it in the boot order.  It would recognize and boot from it via the USB connection however.  Also, even though not recognized by the BIOS when connected via eSATA, once Windows 7 booted up, it found and used the drive just fine.  I was able to partition and format it in Windows 7 over the eSATA connection.  I was also able to boot Linux from CD-ROM, and then it also was able to see the eSATA drive (and install Linux).  I just wasn't able to boot from it.
I experimented with settings in the BIOS, and found that if I set the SATA mode to IDE, then the BIOS did recognize the eSATA drive, list it in the boot order, and could boot from it.  I've had no problems booting and running Linux on the eSATA drive this way, and performance measurements are close to the manufacturer's specs for average read throughput.  What I lose without ACHI is native command queueing (which could provide a performance in random read cases), and hot plugging.  Oh well.
The big pain is that I have to switch back to ACHI in order to boot Windows 7 on the internal drive.  Otherwise I get the blue screen of death, due to Windows expecting SATA devices, not IDE.
I think Lenovo could fix the BIOS if it wanted to.  I wish it would...

  • Blackberry to run multiple boot Android and QNX

I heard from an internal source @BB that since BlackBerry business is going bad, Blackberry Z10/30 is going to allow multiple boot for less secure with android and secure with QNX so users could buy a phone that enjoy both worlds !!!

  • Managing multiple boot partitions

    HI,
I Have multiple boot partitions on my mac pro. 1 mountain lion and 1 snow leopard. is there any way to make disks read only to the other bootable partitions?
so for example, when im in one of my snow leopard I dont want snow leopard to be able to write to my mountain lion and vise versa. Please let me know.

iJny9956: Ok.  I'll walk you through this best I can over the web.  You'll need to go through the whole process twice—once for each OS.
    1) Boot into one of your operating systems.
    2) Log into an Admin account
    3) Launch "Disk Utility"
    4) Select the drive or partition containing the operating system you want to make read-only (so, if you're booted into Mountain Lion (ML) select the Snow Leopard (SL) partition, and vice versa)
    5) Get Info… on that drive or partition by using the Command-i keystroke, or File > Get Info
    6) In the window that appears, look for the line beginning, "Universal Unique Identifier".  The long string of numbers, digits and dashes after this is the value you'll need for fstab.
    7) Select this long string, excluding any spaces at the beginning or end, and Copy it.
    8) Now launch Terminal—you'll find it in /Applications/Utilties, alongside Disk Utility
    9) Type: sudo vifs
    10) Hit Enter.  You'll be presented with a warning if you haven't used sudo before, and then a prompt for a password.
    11) Enter your Admin password.  You'll receive no visual feedback of the characters you enter—this is normal.  Hit Enter.
    12) You've now entered a command-line text editor called vim, which has in turn opened the fstab file for you to edit.  This is the only recommended way to edit the fstab file, as the text file itself will say.
    13) Use your cursor keys and move the cursor to the empty space below the warning text.  Press the letter "o" on your keyboard.  This will open a new line below where your cursor was, and allow you to enter text.
    14) Enter the following text—each entry on the line should be separated by a single space, as I've done here:
    UUID=XXX-XXX-XXX-XXX-XXX none hfs ro
Instead of entering the "XXX…"s, paste in the value you copied from Disk Utility.  Make sure there is no space between the "=" and the start of the value you paste.  "none" means the disk or partition should be mounted to the default location, so you can ignore this; "hfs" defines the filesystem being used on the disk or partition; "ro" is the variable that means, "read-only".
    15) That's it.  Press Escape once, then type a colon:
You'll see this colon appear at the very foot of the Terminal window.  Now type:
    qw
These stand for "quit" & "write".  Hit Enter, and the text editor will save and quit.
And that's it.  If you reboot your Mac Pro at this stage and boot into the same OS you were just working in, you should find that the other OS's drive or partition is now read-only.  You can confirm this, after you've rebooted, by launching Terminal again and typing:
    mount
Hit Enter, and you'll see a list of all your mounted devices.  Some you won't recognize, but you should see that the line referring to the other OS's drive will have, "read-only" next to it.
Now, just repeat for the other OS, and you should be done.  If you have any questions, post back here.  NB: to stop the other OS's drive mounting at all on boot, replace "ro" in step 14 above with, "noauto".  If you want to use more than one variable here, separate them with a comma but don't add a space—eg.:
    ro,noauto,noexec
In this example, a drive will not be mounted on boot, but when it is explicitly mounted (eg. with Disk Utility) it will mount Read-Only, and with the ability to launch programs stored on that drive removed ("noexec").  This latter can be useful if you use Spotlight to launch applications and don't want to accidentally launch an application on the other OS's drive.
    HTH.
PS: I was in a hurry and didn't proof-read this.  Any questions, just post back.

  • Z87-G45 Multiple SSD's & Multiple Boot WXP/W7/W8.1 ???

Hi there, gave up on my old K8T board following advice from BB2K and bought a G45 with a large i5k & 16GB memory & Geoforce GPU...all working great.
Have installed WIN 8.1 on a Samsung 840 Pro SSD. Also Win 7 on a second Samsung SSD and currently installing Win XP 64 on another Samsung SSD. Have updated them fully & used the MSI Live updater so each drive is as good as it gets patch wise.
Again individually each drive working great. But I do not know how to make the system multiple boot.
Tried briefly with all three drives. Machines sees them but no matter which hardware selection I make it goes into WIN 8.1. If I disconnect and just have one drive in, each O/S boots fine.
Having on a previous machine had WIN 8.1 control the boot of the same drive configuration, it was a bit flimsy and I'd prefer the MSI board do this via hardware but am unsure how to do that......to be honest first modern MB I've worked on since the bad old days (circa 2003) so unfamiliar with new options & terminology.
Can anyone suggest best way and options please to achieve this? Or is there an article or link you could point me towards?
Appreciate any pointers or help I can get from anyone. Made my first post a couple of weeks back and had super help with that one. Fingers crossed this time. Many thanks

to set up a RAID0 you go into the BIOS and change:
1: the drive mode to Raid
    2: save and exit
3: as it restarts hit CTRL+J
4: in the new interface tell it to make a Raid array
5: set it to Raid 0
6: assign all 3 Drives to the Raid 0
7: let it make the raid array
    8: format the RAID
    now your good to go
it may be easier to use the software boot manager as you will need to download the RAID drivers for your board and make sure you have them when you install each OS as you need the RAID driver for it to function correctly!
software boot manager: upside: would be easier to set up and more safe as you will have 3 intendant disks. downside: you do not like that way and they will only be at SATA 3 speed.
RAID 0: upside: would be more streamlined and would have a side effect of being alot faster during operation as you have 3 drives each with full SATA3 speed acting as a single drive (1500MB/s ish read so it will be incredibly fast)! Down side: if a drive goes bad you would have to start over again and make the raid and install the OS's again.
Very interesting stuff. Well that makes things interesting because the intention is to make the machine a sort of "thin client" or "netbook".....ish. I have a large RAID10 NAs which the aim is to take all the data management issues and leave the PC's with minimal data and apps on them.
And given that SSD's 'should' be more reliable than the old mechanical drives then you would hope that a potential drive failure should be a less frequent event.
I like the potential speed advantages and was not aware of that. And on the RAID front, would it be an option to step up to something like RAID5 or RAID10? Or would that be an overhead or complexity a bridge too far?
The drivers you mention, do you mean for the Samsung Pro 840 drives themselves?
I sense a rebuild coming on!
Edit: .... thinking on, I have access to another Crucial 256GB SSD. Would that be something I could add to the RAID array? If we are going to bite the bullet then I'd prefer doing it only once. And if the RAID 5 or 10 option really was an option then having 4 drives (3 Samsung and the larger Crucial one) would be a good way to go. But I read that all the drives have to be the same....is that the case? Certainly on my NAS box it is the case very specifically so.
But if I could add this unit it might make sense to do so.

  • Automating OS install in WDS with multiple boot image

Hi, can someone explain to me if it is possible to completely automate a windows install in WDS with 3 different install and boot image. I am new to this and trying to learn everything i can.
I have 3 unattended files attributed to each install.wim already (and they work fine) and 1 unattended file for Windows Deployment Services.
my problem is as soon as the client PC PXE boot, I'm presented with 3 options in boot manager, maybe because i have 3 boot.wim files (from what i understand). after i pick which boot option
i want to use, i don't have to do anything anymore and windows is installed, the disk is partitioned and a user account is created.
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByIjtLJtT3oHaTFLcF9mWldnZmM/edit?usp=sharing
Is it possible to have an unattend file that will help me bypass the 3 options  to make the process completely automated.
Can i create a script for a type of PC or brand of PC, so that the deployment server can see what type of PC or what brand of PC it is and automatically pick the boot file for that pc and automate the rest of the install. (maybe another software that can help
me do that, or i need to put something on the client computers so that they themselves pick the appropriate boot options)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Georges

If you are new to deployment you should really learn the recommended way to deploy os:es.
You should use MDT (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit)

  • Be careful with App Store and multiple boot drives.

I just had a strange thing occur.  I was fighting with a Messages server problem as described here : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4322859?start=0&tstart=0 and was alternating back and forth between an upgraded boot drive, where Messages was not working, and a fully functioning backup boot drive.  Two physically separate disks on the same system.
A solution to the problem above was to manually delete Server.app from the boot drive, reboot, and reinstall Server.app from App Store.
Working on the non working (Messages Server) upgraded drive which was the boot disk, I removed Server.app and rebooted.  There is now no Server.app on this drive.
Log in to App Store and ask for install of Server software.  Did not receive a drive selection request.  Assumed install would be on boot disk.
    Reboot.
App Store had upgraded my backup drive to the new Server.app.  The boot drive still did not have Server.app on it.
    I now have no backup.
    Be careful.

The issue seems not only for TweetDeck but also for other applications and functions. For example, I tried to buy and install the following Mac app, but actually nothing happened after I clicked the BUY APP button.

    Any clues please? THANKS!

  • On a Multiple Boot iMac, FireFox is getting fonts from wrong partition

I run FireFox on an iMac. I have a primary partition on the build-in harddrive. Using an external harddrive, I've build another system on Snow Leopard on which I can do experiemtns safe from my main system (safe if I be reasonably careful). One of the issues is doing this is that applications that offer to update themselves do so when I'm in the 'wrong' boot. I should refuse to do it then. But I think I did so. Now adays when I startup FireFox, it is asking permission to use fonts on the boot partition of my alternate system. Using Font Book on my main system I see that the main system has fonts of the same name and probably same font data.
How do I fix the configuration of FireFox on the main partition to look for and find the fonts in the fonts installed in that boot parition?

Some threads about this issue that you can look at:

    * [/questions/768100] Why does firefox want to use different fonts on mounted hard drives
Move all User fonts in Font Book to Computer fonts.
    # Launch Font Book (/Applications/Utilities/)
    # Open Font Book > Preferences
    # Deselect: "Automatic Font Activation"
    # Set the "Default Install Location" for fonts to "Computer"
    # Select all User fonts
    # Move the selected User fonts to Computer fonts

  • Using TM to backup multiple boot drives

    hello all,
Relatively new to TM. I have new Mac Pro's each with 2 320 gig drives, each with a different OS configuration - 1 boot drive for Final Cut Pro, the other boot drive for Avid.
I want to use TM to backup both of these drives whithin each OS. It seems that no matter what OS i am in, the backup is always made to a folder named the same thing "John Doe's Backup".
Its seems though when i am in Boot drive 1 and backup TM names my back up the same things as when i am in Boot Drive 2.
Does this make sense. Can anyone help? Do i just change the name of the computer on one of the boot drives?
Any info would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!

    MustafaEditor wrote:
i tried renaming my alternate boot drive
no, don't rename the drive. that will do nothing. rename the computer. boot from that drive, go to system preferences->sharing and change the name of the computer. that's the name that TM uses.
but when i instruct time machine to "back up now" the backup that mounts is still named the same as my other boot drive.
I don't understand what you mean by that.
not sure where the backups.backupdb folder is located?
the folder backups.backupdb is located on the backup drive and contains all TM backups. inside there should be folders with the names of the computers that are being backed up. if I understand yoursetup there should be two folders there with different names. however, there should normally be no reason for you to look inside that folder using finder.
as you said there may be different folders whithin there but i don't know where to find those folders.
thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Multiple Boot Camp partitions

Is there any way I can setup 3 partitions for OS's? I currently am running Boot Camp with Windows XP Pro with Mac OS 10.6.2. I would like to setup a third partition and install Windows 7. Any thoughts?

    Hi,
have a look at these instructions http://www.windowsonthemac.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2 and substitute Vista with Windows 7
Be aware to have/make backups of your OSX and your Windows XP before attempting.

  • Kernel Panics on multiple boot disks

    Dear All,
In the last 2 weeks I have suddenly started to get repeated panics (grey multilingual box) at less (often much less) than 30min intervals on this machine - booted off the internal HD (even after a disk erase and re-install), an external Firewire disk (which runs fine booting another processor) and even the Tiger install DVD! Everything passes Apple hardware test and in desperation I replaced the machine. Now the dealer who has the machine cannot get another panic! He also says he can get nothing from the crash log from the Tiger DVD crash (most other logs were lost when the disk was erased), but I feel this should mean something - an extract from the critical section in quite a long log is:-

This machine has given a good deal of trouble in the past but has had a new logic board only last year. Any suggestions?
    Powerbook G4 17 Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1G RAM

Thanks! A lot of interesting stuff. The Tiger DVD was the same one used to install Tiger originally on this and other machines so not that I think.
RAM is a thought - the only thing done to the machine before passing it to the dealer was to remove & re-insert the extra 512M RAM resident in the machine since it was bought (why? - in the mistaken belief that I could transfer it to the newer PB - in fact it is not compatible, presumably not fast enough).
Of course it will presumably still be using the internal HD for virtual memory when booted off the DVD (so a HD problem might still cause a crash) - but it would not if booted off an external firewire disk would it?
No peripherals were connected when using the DVD, though some other disks/partitions are also present when using the firewire drive.
Thanks for all the advice! What I really need is either assurance that the problem has for some reason gone, or that the machine has a definable hardware fault, in which case Apple have said they will fix it under Applecare even though it is 3 weeks out-of-cover (in view of the history).
FWIW last year's acknowledged hardware issue was a strange one in which the machine had run fine under OS 10.3, or under 10.4 when booted from an external disk, but consistently froze after a few minutes when booted from the 10.4 install DVD (regardless of whether an install was actually attempted). I am not clear that this was ever really diagnosed but it was fixed by various replacements (a second DVD behaved in exactly the same way).

  • Pavilion dv5 - 1217AX with Windows 8 - multiple booting and crashing issues

I have a Pavilion dv5 - 1217AX with Windows 8 operating system. It was upgraded from Vista to windows 8 last year and it worked really very well for about 1 year. Here are the issues I am facing these days
    1. When powered on - Caps lock and Num lock LEDs keep flashing twice and the sequence keeps repeating - I checked the error code on some forums and it sounded like BIOS issue so I flashed the BIOS F38 again (SP46501) but it didn't help. I also thought it could be a memory issue so I removed the memory module and cleaned the slots and fixed the modules again but no luck. I also tried running the laptop using only one module, tried both the modules one by but no changes in error code. Then I thought it could be a toy bettery issue so replaced the toy batter that fits on the motherboard but no luck. I have also tried booting up removing the laptop battery pack but no luck.
So how does it boot now? - Once powered on I keep getting Caps lock Num lock LED flashing issues every time. Then I power off using power on/off button on laptop around 15 times or more then the laptop somehow boots up. There is no fixed pattern, sometimes it boots after 15 attempts, sometimes 50 attempts.
Whats happenes after booting? - Sometimes the screen goes completely blank without any error message on the screen. Sometimes Windows 8 crashes and laptop restarts, when it restarts I never see LED flashing issues (surprising). It crashes when I am watching some videos or playing some games, so looks like ATI Radeon driver issue (driver is 8.970.100.7000 for HD 3400 display card).
Let me know if there are any suggestion to fix the botting and crashing issues faced.

    Hi Expertit ,
At first sight ,seems to be a boot issiu.Did you thry this?
Booting into the Windows 8 setup, select “Repair your computer” in the bottom part of the window, then “Troubleshoot” and “Advanced options”. Here I was given a good reminder of another cool Windows 8 feature. If you have a restore point created you can go back to that working copy of the OS without losing your data.
So the first thing you will want to try is the Automatic Repair.
If that fixes your boot problem, you had it easy and go on to create a restore point for another time you are out of luck. If Windows is unable to fix your issue, read on.
Go back to the Advanced options and choose the Command Prompt. Going for the next easiest way to fix the problem, enter the following four commands into the prompt:
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd
After receiving a success confirmation. Close the CMD window and restart your PC.
If you are booted into Windows, excellent! If not, let us know , so we can try some more solutions.
2.If your video crashes , it is probably wrong Catalyst settings.Right click on screen , open Catalyst control settings , set it to high (Radeon) performance.
    Expecting your next post.

  • Multiple Boot Camp Issues & Questions

    Hello,
I installed windows xp on my late 2008 macbook a couple months back. My Mac has 4gb RAM and 250gb HDD. I allotted 80gb to Windows XP, as I use it to run 3D Studio Max as well as Adobe CS4. Ever since the Mac side has been running sluggish (not horrible, just not like before) It's restarts are much longer for example, and it seems the fan is working harder, regardless of it being in Mac OS X or Windows XP.
Now, I know its not the Windows partion size, because i originally had a 32gb partition and it just wasnt big enough, but it actually ran slower then. All I'm wondering is:
-could there be something wrong with my fan?
I downloaded Fan control and on average the left fan says 1600rpm and the right fan says - 1prm(why is hte right so low?)
-is there anything i can do to optimize my mac to perform at its best?
-will bootcamp 3.0 (coming with snow leopard) be able to run 64bit windows vista/7?
Sorry for the long post, but if anybody could answer some or all of my questions, it'd be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Austin

Once you have Windows installed and in use, it behaves no differently than Windows on a PC. In addition, you may run into issues related to Apple-specific hardware.

  • Multiple Boot Disk Help

    Hey Gang...
I'm setting up my new Mac Pro. Primary work for this will be running ProTools LE and it will also do some Photoshop duty.
Here's what I'd like to do. Can anyone walk me thru this? Is it all possible?
    1. Let the 250GB Internal Drive serve as main/utility drive. Let it upgrade to 10.4.9. Keep documents and such here and backup only the important folders.
    2. I have a LaCie D2 500GB external drive that has several ProTools sessions on it as well as a bunch of audio stuff that isn't backed up (don't ask...I have a partner who left the company). I'd like to install 10.4.8 on this drive as well as ProTools program and use it as a Utility drive for my ProTools work, but not as my primary storage for Sessions. Since Digidesign doesn't support 10.4.9 yet it is really important that I stick with 10.4.8 for now.
    3. I have a 1TB Western MyBook External drive that I'd like to use as a RAID-0 setup and use to record to. Probably wouldn't hurt to have the OS on this drive, but not necessary. Just need the space and the speed. Currently there is nothing on this drive. Would probably install photoshop here.
So can I do this? If so, how do I get the OS installed on the other two volumes. How do I keep #2 above from not updating?
Sorry if this seems elementary. I've been a Powerbook guy up until the last few days! Thanks!

Install Mac OS X on the three disks as you would a single normal disk individually, and then install the updates from the Software Update pane of System Preferences on 1 and 3. For 2, ignore the Mac OS X 10.49 updater and run this updater instead.
