Multiple files now open in addition to what I want.

Hey all,
I installed Lion when it came out (running MBP 2.2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) and now I have a strange (and annoying) issue.
When I click on a file to open (whether its a picture through preview, file in powerpoint or sheet in excel) several files open in addition to the one selected. Files that I never wanted open now do so automatically which as you might imagine slows everything down. I have gone through and tried to find what magical setting is making this happen but I can't figure it out.
Is anyone else having this issue?

Just close them before quitting.
The expectation in Lion is that applications remember their state, so when they're reopened, they restore to their previous state, with whatever windows/documents/etc. that were open before it quit.
So if you open 10 documents in, say, Preview, then quit and relaunch, those same 10 documents will reopen.
This contrasts to previous OS versions where relaunching would start off fresh and you'd need to reopen those 10 documents if you wanted them.
So, your solution should be as simple as closing the unneeded/wanted documents before quitting the app.
If that doesn't work something else is amiss, but that's the likliest solution.

I've 'trashed' my preferences, updated both Suitcase 3 and CS5 to the latest updates...and still having issues. Just constant crashing whenever I open multiple files, or as soon as I enter a text box to make edits.

Hmm yes, I've just had my first crash of the day - tried to package a file and it froze when copying the font files over.
Well, that does seem a plausible summary of what is happening. Your crash report is of particular interest, because it doesn't really implicate InDesign:

so, that is a crash in Apple code. Now, of course, the apple code was called from InDesign, and there's a certain degree of garbage-in-garbage-out. If you ask the operating system to copy a nonexistent file to a nonexistent device, it might crash. It shouldn't but it might.

So, where does that leave us? Well, we would like to know what file is being copied, and why the file copy operation caused the operating system to crash the program.
Are you sure it was a font? Could it have been copying another linked file?
I don't suppose you have any folks around the office who know their way around Apple's Xcode tools, that are used for developing Objective C applications? There are some ways to figure out what file is causing InDesign to crash, but they're all kind of cryptic and annoying to explain without doing it in person...
If not, let me know and I'll try to figure out a simple way to explain it... (and to figure out which of the cryptic tools are the best ones to recommend for this situation. A question that might take me some time to answer....)

Auto upgraded last night, Norton popped up with warning about using an exe file - Nortorn removed file now firefox won't work - what to do to restore firefox and keep bookmarks, etc. or is new exe safe to use?

After Firefox upgraded, I closed the upgrade window and started firefox. When I went to bookmarks and tried to open a program a Norton window opened warning that this was untested...only 10 users in the community and gave three options:
1. Block program
2. Remove file
3. Let it run.
Not really knowing what was going on, I picked option 2. The "removal" was still running 7 hours later so I shut the computer down manually. All other programs seem to be working fine (email, Internet Explorer, etc.)
When I now open firefox I have the option to start a new session or restore. I have not restored and a new session will stay open a few seconds before microsoft closes the program ( program has stopped working). I would like to restore firefox and get it working without loosing my bookmarks, etc.or have Norton try to block the program. Also, I think the exe file in question is a launcher.

What are the names of the files? That is your beginning. One
option is to isolate your computer from the web while you get
back control.

In 10.4, an internet audio file now opens with Quicktime?

When I was using 10.3 (and before), when clicking on an audio file on the internet, RealPlayer 9 automatically opened.
One could see the % of the file being downloaded and then (quickly), one would automatically hear the audio clip.
Most often, I am talking about audio clips available on NPR (National Public Radio).
Since I have installed 10.4 (now at 10.4.3), when I click on the same audio file, now Quicktime opens instead. And then nothing happens. Quicktime opens, a Quicktime Player is seen, but I hear nothing and nothing tells me whether the audio file is being downloaded, is ready to be listened to, or anything.
With Quicktime 7, is RealPlayer now supposedly superfluous?

But think I need more step-by-step directions.
1. I have RealPlayer (9) already.
2. MIME settings in QuickTime Preference Pane. Set it to use RealPlayer for the Format .SMIL How?
3. In the QuickTime Preference Pane, there is a box for .SMIL, one box only, under "Miscellaneous." It IS unchecked already. But NPR still opens with QuickTime.
4. By "Change your Mac to use Real Player to open .SMIL files - ." I assume you mean, I will be on NPR, download a QT file and then try to change it to a RealPlayer file under "Get Info?"

Bridge is slow and lags when selecting multiple files to open.

I currently have CS6 latest version (ver. 13.0 x64)
My problem is in my Bridge software (5.0.2.4 x64)
I have been getting a 4 or 5 second delay when trying to
select multiple files or navigating through the menu and functions.
(Photoshop also delays a few seconds when opening a file.)
After trying different solutions, I have narrowed my best guess to a
conflict with my video card or drivers.
I have a PC running win 7 64 bit. 12 gb of ram, an ATI radion 3000 video card with the
latest driver. An AMD phenom quad processor.
All of my drivers and software is up to date, including my Windows 7.
No other software on my computer gives me any LAG time or problems.

You need a better video card. You card rates a passmark score of 106. You probably need one at least of 500 and closer to 1000 is good. You get a card above this score you start paying more and getting less. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/

.wmv files now open with premier

Hi:
I have CS2. Just in the last week, any .wmv file that I download now wants to open with Premier! Of course, I have to start a new project and when I do, there isn;'t any file to open. I have looked in the download manager and it is downloaded, ready to play, but premier can't import it. Media Player can't find it either. I have unchecked the file types with MP and then re linked them, no luck. I think MS did an update, but I haven't changed any file associations with premier or QT or any other player. Anyone else having this problem or heard of it? I have looked online and can't find anything relating to this. it is very frustrating not to be able to look at amy .wmv files. TIA

You need to change the file association for.wmv.

How do I get multiple files to open in the same alpha-numeric sort order in which they are displayed in Finder?

If I drag a bunch of files to, e.g., Adobe Photoshop they seem to open in strange orders. This makes automating any sort of editing workflow next to impossible. Is there some way to get programs to open files in the same order in which I see them? This is the default behaviour in Windows and it's really helpful when you have hundreds of files (or even just a few) that need to be processed in a certain order. Thanks for any help you might provide.

What's likely happened is that when you transferred the video to the new machine they lost their dates.
Photos use the Exif metadata to record the date and time of the shot. This is quite different from the date and time of the file, which can change as the file is copied from place to place. Video doesn't have Exif, and so iPhoto uses the file date, and that's changed.
Simply, there's no absoultely reliable way to date video.
Try assign dates with the Batch Change command under the Photos menu.

Version 10.1.8 SLOW and locks up Windows Explorer when attempting to select multiple files to open.

User contacted L1 Tech Support when browsing server & attempting to simply select multiple adobe pdf's. Passed to Support level 2. Level 2 deemed was not server as they could recreate the issue on any machine running 10.1.8 by copying in question pdf's or a group of random others to a local machine & get the same result.
Other common observations, have latency when opening up pdf files via IE in ERP application. Seems to be an issue with Adobe either versioning or inherent problems. ( have read through many "setting mod's & have verified "Starting in protected mode" is off ) any help or direction is much appreciated. Next steps will be to open PDF's with another product.
Consistent results on 300+ machines some XP some W764bit.

Could you please elaborate your issue and provide more information like the exact version of internet explorer and how do you try to open multiple Pdf document using internet explorer at a time.
Also tell me if you have attempted to disable some third party brower extention and plug-ins.

Pages 9.4.1 multiple file Pages opening

Right now when I open a Pages files from finder, i get several other Pages file that I have worked on in the recent past opening up. How do I stop this or make this correction?

Close documents windows before quitting the app.
As it was already explained several times, Under Lion, applications are designed to open in the state which was their one when we quitted them.
You may run the script below to disable this feature for a lot of applications.

Multiple file path open

I have some code that will open the files I want inside a folder, do some appending to a spreadsheet file and close down. I am trying to expand it to open every file inside a set of subfolders within a main folder. I have it pretty close, as you can see by the attached image, but the last bit eludes me. Any ideas on what I am missing?

Hey I have it working! Almost.
It compiles the data I want, but generates the error I have shown. I suspect it is a loop count mismatch or some such thing. I am not sure how to trap for this. I had the list functions trapping and it wasn't coming out of any of them, and I'm not educated enough as yet to add error trapping for other parts of the code that don't automatically provide for trapping.
By the way, I had to do the 'for' loops this way because if I did it any other way, wires would break and I became hopelessly ensared trying to make them match.

How do I stop multiple files from opening at once?

When I click the icon to open word, powerpoint, or excel all of the word files open at the same time. The same goes for the others, if I click on powerpoint-all of my powerpoint files open at once. The only reason pages, numbers and keynote does not do it, is because I don't have any files for those programs. I work mainly from microsof-more comfortable. Someone Please help!!

Today, I deleted all of the down loads from the down load folder

When you restart or shut down you have the option to "Reopen Windows when Logging Back In". Untick this option and neither the applications nor the documents you have open un shutdown will reopen when you log back in. PSE 9.0.3 on Mac - files now opening in tabs?

Tabbed windows don't work for me in PSE, I often need to look at more than one document. With v9.0.3, files open in tabs by default. I looked and looked for a preference setting to change that to no avail. Is there a setting for that?

Yes I agree it's a pain. But as I indicated there is a work around in the window menu or just by dragging out the tabs.
It's not ideal and I may uninstall and reinstall unless Adobe come up with a fix.
The update claimed it was mainly for Wacom tablets; so I feel completely missled by Adobe.

Why does Firefox (after the latest update) open an additional tab "What's new"? It causes my laptop to crash, including my "Session restore"

Mozilla Fireox Session Restore fully functioned. However, not after latest update (10.0.2). It takes a lot time to load the (additional tab) page "what's new?" / "Firefox add-ons" after which the script running Session Restore fails.
Only occurs after (re)starting laptop.
How do I remove this addional tab ?
It's irritating.

I have set my home page but the "drag this icon to the home symbol to set your home page" box will NOT go away each time I use Firefox. How can I get rid of it now that I've done what it wanted?

This little box near the top right started showing up recently, and after a few times I realized I did want to change my home page to my most frequently used web page, so I followed the instructions and it works, but that @W#$ popup box continues to show up each and every time I start, every time I log out of the web page, and so on. Since I've fulfilled its requirements, I'd like to get it to STAY GONE and not get in my way.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
