Multiple iMac users and iTunes

I have setup our iMac with multiple users. I migrated all our digital music to one user and found all the cover art, etc to make it work well. Now I want to allow all the other users to access that music library. I have tried everything from adding the files from a shared folder to exporting it to physically copying all the files and cover art to a different folder for each user. Exporting doesn't work at all, and there doesn't seem to be a way to simply share the same music files across users on an iMac. The closest was physically copying the files, but that means gigabytes of duplicated files for each user, and it still loses some of the covert art. There has to be a solution to this, or Apple has missed a critical function for the multiple user feature. Please help.

Quit iTunes.
Move \Music\iTunes\ folder to the Shared folder.
Hold Option when starting iTunes and select *Choose existing library* then select the iTunes library file in \Shared\iTunes\.
iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time so each will need to quit iTunes when they are off the computer.

You create the playlist on the other computer which may require moving or copying of the media from the first computer to the second computer.

  • Multiple ipods users and one computer

Our household has several iPods but use one computer. I just purchased a new iPod and when I connected to the computer (Windows XP) it allowed me to identify my ipod but sunced the other ipod user's music. I'm lost - how can I or can I maintain 2 different syncs?

When the iPods belong to different people, there are basically three ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library
    b) Creating Multiple Libraries in a single user account
    c) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish): Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page: Loading songs onto iPod shuffle - Windows
    Multiple Libraries
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Shift key (or the Option key on a Mac) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here: Using Windows XP User Accounts

  • Multiple ipod users on itunes how prevent auto load

i just received ipod i have itunes on computer already
(pc) 3 others in household have nanos
how do i get registered without their songs automatica;;i loading to my ipod
    would like manual download

You could also create multiple user accounts. iTunes libraries are separated by uer account, so a new account will have an empty library.
To set up another User Account in Windows, open Control Panel, and select User Accounts. Create a new account (see the sidebar for help) and then log into that account. (You can use fast user swiching to leave yourself loged in and switch between the two accounts. Just go to Start -> Log Off -> Switch User) Once you are logged into the new account, open iTunes and you will see an empty library ready for you to fill with music. Hope this helps!

  • ITunes will not open in Windows 7 for one User. All I get is the Licence Agreement pane and when I click YES nothing further happens. I have set up a second user and iTunes opens without problem in that User window.

Clearly something is blocking the main user(administrator) from opening the iTunes programme and I cannot find a solution.

Many thanks for your reply. Yes I carried out the suggested procedure in safe mode , which did not resolve the issue and so this is what led me to set up a second User account. iTunes opened without problem in this second account and so I looked at the User-specific troubleshooting but I just could not locate the iTunes Preference files no matter how much searching I did.
I also tried uninstalling and re-installing but the problem persists. Would be very grateful for any further advice.

  • Can I do a 3 way video chat with two iMac users and 1 PC user?

    Hi,
I'm due to have a video conference in a few days and I suddenly realized that one of us has a PC and two of us have iMacs. If the PC user were to get AIM, would it be possible for her to communicate with the two of us and can the two of us communicate with and see her? We live in 3 separate areas so we will be using three separate computers. If it is possible to do this, what do we all need to do? Also, I have iChat 5.0 and the other iMac user has whatever came with Tiger. I have done three way video conferences before without a problem but we've all had iChat. Thanks in advance.

  • Issues with multiple apple IDs and iTunes accounts

I work in an office that is all mac based and have mac computers at home.  I have an apple ID and iTunes account for personal use where I purchase books and music and I have an office apple ID and iTunes account to share calendars with colleagues using iCloud and purchase work related apps like upgrades to operating systems, etc.
I have an iPhone that is set up with my personal apple ID so that my music is on my phone and so that the photo streaming is attached to personal photos, etc.  Is there a way to sync my personal contacts with my contacts that are registered with my professional apple ID?  Ideally, I would like to have my iOS devices syncing my calendar and contacts with my work apple ID and my music and photos with my personal ID.  Is there any hope or am I stuck?
Thanks for any help anyone might have...

    Welcome to the Apple community.
So far as contacts and calendars go, you can share your works data and your personal data with your iOS device by entering the second account as a secondary account in settings > mail, contacts and calendars.
You should also be aware that your iCloud and iTunes accounts and different accounts, you do not have to use the same ID for both.

  • ICal and multiple iMac users w/ iPhones

We have three user accounts on one iMac. Each user has an iPhone. One iCal account has new appointments made on the iMac, but these entries *do not sync to the iPhone.*
I have been through the documentation and cannot figure out why it does not synch.
    Any advice?! Thanks

The good and bad news is that I have the answer to my one question.
If you stumble upon this item the answer is that the INFO tab on iTunes when you are syncing has the options for syncing iCal and Address book. Check the right boxes and all should be well.

  • Syncing multiple devices, user accounts, iTunes accounts one computer

    I have a question that I can't find a clear answer.
I previous had one iPod touch and one iPad that I synched with my iTunes library. No problem. But now the wife has finally purchased a verizon iPhone and I want to be able to use my vast app collection for her phone.
Scenario is we each have separate user accounts (so we can maintain our own calendars and contacts, ect.). We each have our own ITunes accounts and our own iTunes libraries by default. She will not be purchasing much on her account though.
How do I, without creating a can of worms, create one library to sync to so I can put apps and music on her phone without erasing any of her separate information. I have read a lot on the subject and there does not seem to be a clear answer anywhere. Yes, I have read ht1495 but that does not seem to be exactly on point
Basically, I have 3 devices, 2 user accounts and 2 iTunes accounts but one computer only. I want to be able to have all iTunes stuff available on both user accounts and be able to have both people be able to read and write to the same library. I am sure there are plenty of people running into this issue with more and more people getting iPhones with verizon. It seems that it is easier to do with multiple computers than one computer.
So, I am looking for help or advice on the easiest way to accomplish this task.
    IMac   Mac OS X (10.6.6)

The easiest way to accomplish want you want is to transfer what content you want to the separate iTunes library under each user account. To transfer content from your library to your wife's library so that she can use it on her phone, do this:
    1. Launch iTunes under your wife's login.
    2. Sign her out of iTunes & then you sign in.
    3. iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Disable auto-sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected.
    4. Connect your phone, DO NOT SYNC!
    5. Store>Authorize this Computer(only have to do this once).
    6. File Transfer Purchases(all of the purchased content on your phone will be transferred to your wife's library).
    7. When complete, eject your phone, sign out of iTunes, sign your wife back in.
You can now sync whatever content you want to your wife's phone. Just remember, all updates to apps obtained using your account must be done while signed in using your account: sign wife out, you sign in, update apps, you sign out, sign wife in, sync her phone.
This way you can share content(permitted under the EUSLA) and still maintain your separate logins. Do the same under your login if you want to share content from your wife's library.
Just load whatever content you want to share on each others phones, transfer the content, then delete it from the respective phone if you don't want to keep it there.

  • Multiple computer users, one iTunes account

One computer, multiple users (each logon), one iTunes account. All songs are downloaded to D:. I want all songs downloaded by any user to show in everyones library. If I purchase a song how do I make it also show in other user's libraries?

  • ITunes 1080p download playback on latest iMac (2012) and iTunes v11 64-Bit

I've recently bought the new iMac (top of the range 2012 version) and am running all the lates software, including iTunes 11 under 64 Bit.
I thought I would re-organise my iTunes library, deleting SD and 720p files and re-downloading the 1080p version from iTunes. All is great, except I get the QuickTime error when trying to play back the file. This is weird because I can play the file OK as it's downloading, it only has a problem once it's completed the download and the file is processed. I don't want to switch my iTunes to 32 Bit to play them back. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Reading this thread, i realize my response doesn't make a lot of sense.  Sorry 'bout that. I've been deesperately searching for help to get my iTunes running again and i've tried many different things. No such luck so far.

  • Switching Users and iTunes

We have a problem with iTunes when we switch users. We both (only 2 users) have full admin rights and no password required. Both iTunes use the same media source, have the same library name, have sharing turned on, are configured the same exactly. The problem is that for one user (me, actually) all of the music, playlists, apps, etc are as they should be. Switch to the other user (my wife), open iTunes, and no music, playlists, etc. What can we do so that we both have the same iTunes?
    Bob and Dianna

Move your /Music/iTunes folder to /Users/Shared/ folder.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared/.
    Quit iTunes.
Have your wife log into her account.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared/.
    Quit iTunes.
    That's it.
Only one user can be logged into iTunes at a time so if you are using Fast User switching and the other user wants to open iTunes, you must quit iTunes before switching users.

  • IMac CRT and iTunes

Hello. I have a 350 Mhz Blueberry slot-loading iMac that I have just upgraded by installing an 80GB HD and OS X.2.8. I am running minimum RAM right now (128MB) with an upgrade coming soon. My question is - I want to run iTunes and buy music from the iTunes store. The OS X.2 came with iTunes 3, which doesn't even show the Store as a browsing option. I don't have the minimum processor speed nor the CD burner required by iTunes 6. But I do have an iPod Shuffle, a USB port and an iTunes gift certificate. Can I upgrade to a newer version of iTunes that is not 6? Can I load my Shuffle from my trusty old CRT iMac (previously, I was using my husband's PC laptop, not my favorite thing)? If there is another version that I can use, does anyone have a download link.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi
I'm not sure what the min spec speed is for iTunes 6 but it's running here on a 400MHz iMac (Mind you - I have no sound out - but that's a different problem!) and the store is available - I seem to remember it came along with iTunes 4.
Your ipod shuffle will work OK plugged into your imac - it just will be a little slower loading up than if it was plugged into a mac with USB2 - I presume it will charge OK.

  • ITunes Install on Multiple PC's and iTunes Match

I'll explain what I have and what I want to do.
    1.  My main PC (laptop) has iTunes 11 on it.  It is a fresh new laptop and a fresh install of iTunes.  I have sharing turned on as well as iTunes match.  This PC accesses the music files locally (stored on an NAS) and when I travel, I use the "cloud" to access my music  (different library file to do so) which of course is on iTunes match.  It is logged into my iTunes account which also has the iTunes match subscription.  I back my iPhone 5 to it.
    2.  My wife has a laptop.  I would like to install iTunes 11 on it, enable sharing, and have her access iTunes match.  It will be a "dummy computer" that only access iTunes match and home sharing.  My wife has her own iTunes account.  To do this, will I still log it in under my iTunes ID and then enable iTunes match on it?  Or, can I log in to iTunes under her name and does it make a difference?  Is it best for me to back up her iPhone to my laptop as well since that is the "main" laptop?
    3.  My son has a laptop.  Same questions and statements as #2 above.  Where do I back-up his phone?
    4.  I have a desktop in the basement.  It used to be the "main" computer.  It had all of our back-ups and everything on it until I got my laptop.  I assume I could set it up like #2 above?
    5.  I want to enable iTunes match in my wife's iPhone.  I know how to do that, but I imagine I will have to log it into the iTunes/App store under my ID so that I can turn on iTunes match?  Will that affect her back-ups at all like I was referring to above?  I want to make sure if I plug it into my laptop to back-up, it wont merge our phones somehow.
Are there any questions that I missed or flaws in my approach?

An addition to #3 above.  He currently backs up his iPhone to the desktop in the basement.  I will enable him to back up to the cloud, however if I have to do a local back-up, what computer should I use?  He also has music stored locally on his phone and I am unsure if I am going to enable match on his phone, if not, how will he get music on his phone?  I don't want his laptop to access the NAS with music on it so what should I do?  Maybe I will need to allow him access to the cloud?
