Multiple sites, different computers

I have set up multiple websites on my original iMac using iWeb08. I just purchased a MacBook Pro with iWeb09 and would like to do one of two things: 1) Manage all my sites on each computer or 2) Manage "site1" on the MBP and "sites2-4" on the iMac. I am publishing all the sites to my MobileMe account.
It looks like I can copy my original Domain onto a USB Drive and then transfer it to the MBP and edit there. But then I need to make sure I always bring the USB drive back and forth and replace the Domain file each time before I make any changes. Sure that will work, but seems a little annoying and time consuming.
So my question is would it be best to separate the sites into separate Domain files and load them individually from each computer? or just maintain each site on each computer? Can I even publish to MobileMe from two different places like I am thinking?
Thanks for any input!

Do these sites have domain names associated with them?
If you publish multiple sites from separate domain files to the same MMe account the last published site will be the default for any domain name using the CNAME method and will be the default URL for that MMe account: http://web.me.com/YourMMe_AccountName/.
The full URL to each site will work: http://web.me.com/YourMMe_Account_Name/SiteName.
Are those computers linked together on a local network? If so you can just log into the primary computer which houses the domain file from the other computer and work on the domain file. Or, if you have an external HD connected to any of the computers, put the domain file on it and set up access so both computers can reach it.
There is another possible method using DropBox: Old Toad's Tutorial #21 - Managing an iWeb site from multiple Macs with Dropbox.. It's worked for me on a simple site. But one user reported photo pages not getting updated on one computer. It does take a while for the other computer to be updated as it has to be on and connected to the internet. Just proceed with caution till you're sure there's no lagging in the updating.

  • Multiple sites, different computers, same ip addresses.

I'm at a site today where some client machines have identical IP addresses to client machines at another site (192.168.1.xxx). This is resulting in some kind of weird thing where when I try to interact with client machines, ARD tries to go back to the other machines with the same IP addresses.
So if, for instance, I try to install a package on a machine at site B, when the confirmation dialog window pops up, the computer with that same IP address at site A is listed. Trying to go ahead with the installation (or whatever) fails because, well, the computer at site A is not available.
Does this make sense? I'm typing in an awful hurry in hopes that someone can see this soon!

Yes, forgive me for not being clear... I was in a terrible hurry. I wound up just deleting all the computer records from ARD so there would be no conflicts.
    TeenTitan wrote:
If your at location B, and your trying to access computers at location B, but your computer records from location A is in the way. Have you considered creating a new user account on your ARD computer for location b computers.
    Yes.
The problem I was having is that I have two different sites with multiple computers, call them sites A and B. At site A, there are computers whose IP addresses are within the range of 192.168.1.100-150. At site B, there are many computers witin the same IP range. Where machines had conflicts at site B, they would be replaced with the names of computers from site A. Is this making sense?
So when I'd try to log in to a machine at site B whose IP address ended in 105, if there a computer at site A that ended in 105, ARD would look only for the machine at site A.
I did think of making a new user on the laptop, but UGH! That would be a pain!
Is it possible to have ARD only look at the MAC address of the computers or something? It seems pretty stupid that all it looks at is the IP address. It's possible that I could get the machines at site B moved to a different range, but I'm not sure how easy that would be. And I'd rather think there's an easier way to use this software.

  • Managing multiple sites in different iWeb versions - PLEASE HELP!

apnewbie/cyclosaurus/roddy/old toad (and any others more knowledgeable than i):
i've run into a bit of a pickle. i am hoping someone can help straighten me out. i am about to jump out of a window. here's the rundown:
(for starters, i have a .mac account and am publishing to .mac.) i created a site in iWeb 1.1.2 on my work computer (mac book pro). worked great, really lovely. thought to myself, "hey, i'd like to create another site from home, but i don't have iWeb at home (powerbook G4) - i should buy iLife 08 so i can build these things from home and not have personal files on my work computer."
so: i had a site that i created within 1.1.2 with files written to iDisk. i purchased iWeb 08 and would like to have another site, but this one is being created in 2.0. i also am using a personal domain name this time around bought with google apps and hosted by godaddy. i published the new work in progress for a test run and...you guessed it...my original 1.1.2 site was rewritten by the 2.0 site. and the 2.0 site comes up as the standard google search page for domains that aren't up and running. whooopsie.
sorry for the lengthy intro, but that's the background. i guess my specific questions are:
    1) i want to be able to maintain multiple sites from iWeb 2.0...can i open my 1.1.2 domain file in 2.0 and successfully bring that site into 2.0?
    2) what is the most efficient and easiest way to get both of these sites running in 2.0? right now i have two domain files (created on two different computers).
    3) for domain management, is it best to move from the iWeb folder in my home library to different folders (one for each site, with separate domain files, and my 2.0 domain file is NOT called domain, it's the name of the site) to another location? (and of course, i will back these up just in case.) and when i want to update a site, i just open that individual domain file, right? or will these sites publish over each other?
please help. i am at my wits end. i'm sure this is a relatviely simple issue, but i'm new to iWeb.
thanks, thanks, thanks for your help guys.

    joojy,
    Welcome to the forums!
First of all, your original 1.1.2 site may not, in fact, have been overwritten. It is quite possible that the site remains in it's position on the iDisk, Web/Sites/iWeb/YourSite, but because you published to the iDisk (.Mac) from 2.0, a different index.html file has been placed in the root level Web directory which is causing the 404 error. Navigate to the directory on the iDisk, using the Go menu in Finder, and look to see what is actually there. Follow this path:
    Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/YourSiteWillBeHereIfYourLuckIsGood
If your site is there, great; if it isn't, it's not really a problem because hopefully you still have the Domain.sites file on the MacBook Pro and you can republish it if necessary. If it is there, you can modify the index.html file on the iDisk using a text editor and get your url redirected back to where it should be.
Second, do not open your 1.1.2 Domain.sites file with 2.0 until you have a backup of this Domain file. External drives are best for this. Assuming the backup is in place, launch 2.0, choose the Domain.sites file, and click on "update". It will be updated to a Domain.sites2 file. If the site looks ok then continue on with editing/publishing.
Skipping to question (3), by all means, abandon the default location of the Domain.sites file in the Home folder's Library and get accustomed to keeping your Domain files in their own, respective folders. When you want to open one just double-click it.
You are going to encounter difficulties publishing multiple sites in 2.0.2, unless you keep all of the sites in a single Domain file. 2.0 is publishing to a different directory on the iDisk than 1.0; it publishes to /Web/Sites/, as opposed to /Web/Sites/iWeb/. Publishing a site from a separate Domain file erases previously published sites. I have been able to publish multiple sites, from multiple Domain.sites2 files, by mounting the iDisk and actually moving the Site folder back one level, into the root Web folder, and then publishing. When finished, I move it back again. If you have RSS feeds you will probably get a 'file in use' error. The alternative, (other than keeping all sites in a single Domain), is to publish the site to a folder and then manually drop the Site folder into the Web/Sites/ directory on the iDisk. Of course, some .Mac functions are lost when publishing this way.
Work through this info and post back.

  • How do multiple users on different computers work on an Indesign file?

Do we work on it on the Cloud and only one license is needed for same project? Do we need multiple licenses for different computers working on the same file? If I buy Indesign, will I be the only person who can access the software from my computer?

thank you so much! I wouldn't be giving the copy to anyone but yes would
need to access the project from two computers. If this is only a seasonal

  • Multiple sites for different geographic areas

i did a website for a letting agency in glasgow (
    http://www.youlet.co.uk ) but
now the company has decided to open up an extra branch in
cambridge. iv optimised the original site and it appears in top 4
under certain optimised key phrases in msn and yahoo. iv been asked
to make a duplicate site for the cambridge office. now obviously
pages like the property search will have different content but more
informative pages like the home, about pages will be practicaly
identical other than changing all text references and keywords to
    contain cambridge instead of glasgow.
so as not to mess with the ranking of the existing site, i
was going to put that whole site into a subdomain like
website/glasgow, do the same with the cambridge version then have
an index page on the main site linking off to the 2 sites.
what i wanted to ask was by doing this subdomain idea will
this allow each site to be treated as a site in its own right and
allow the glasgow veriosn to get back to where it was in the
rankings with it getting ignored as it is a subsdomain?
and also because the glasgow and cambridge sites will be
mostly identical apart from references to the location will this
count as being duplicate sites and count as spam?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. When publishing multiple sites to to a MobileMe account the last published site will be accessible via the simple URL: http://web.me.com/youraccountname/
However each site has it's own URL which would be:
    http://web.me.com/youraccount_name/sitename
So you need to tack on the site name at the end of the simple URL.
For what it's worth I use iWebSites to manage over 40 individual sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want. It's something you might want to take a look at.

  • FireFox crashes on multiple sites, when 1st opened, also has over 4 or 5 different FireFixes in the Task Manager running how do we fix this?

My PC, my wifes, dads, moms and kids PC all do this since the 14 update. I have updated ALL add-ons even removed some, also updated Flash and other programs, it will do this every time I open FF. Or if it does not crash rite away it will show 5+ of them open in Task Manager. It does this on multiple sites, I even reset FF 2 or 3 times, tried different start pages from Google, to Yahoo, to MSN even private sites I frequent it does not matter what I do it constantly crashes, can someone please fix this or figure out why tons of people are having this problem. This is very upsetting already upset about this darn idea of putting in FaceBook and crap like that integrated into FF that is a stupid move on its own seems more of a sell out I would expect that from IE but not from FF whom we have trusted for years.

You can check for problems caused by a recent Flash 11.3 update and possibly downgrade to Flash 11.2 or 10.3.

  • Can someone help me get my IPOD Touch 3g started? It will only flash the Apple logo off and on. Has been through restore multiple times on different computers, and still will not start.

I have tried restoring the ipod on different computers, one Vista, and one 7. On both, the restore process seems to complete just as it should, until the point where it says "your IPOD will now restart and will appear in listed devices. This IPOD never restarts. The Apple logo just stays on for approximately 30 seconds and then the screen turns off for five or ten seconds and the logo comes back on, over and over for approximately forty five minutes or so, Occasionally the "connect to USB" will come back on, but that is rare. When that does happen, the I-Tunes recognizes it again as an IPOD that needs to complete the restore process. VERRRRRY AGGRAVATING!!!

  • One .Mac account, 2 iWeb Sites, 2 Computers.

Ok, I know a lot of questions have been asked about how to manage multiple sites, but I can't seem to find any information about 2 people sharing one .Mac account.
My husband and I share a .Mac account. We each have our own Apple laptops. We each want our own iWeb site.
Everytime I create a site, it takes over the one that he already created from HIS computer, and vice versa.
There doesn't seem to be a way for both of us to have our own sites on one account from 2 separate computers. SO FRUSTRATING.
Any help would be great, and try to leave as much technical jargon out of it. I'm a self-proclaimed idiot when it comes to computers.
    Thanks, everyone.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Neisha,
Another way to achieve what mp is talking about is for you and your husband to each create a one page "site" in iWeb and move it to the top of your site organizer. Put links (image or text) on that page to direct those who visit your short url to the correct site. I would recommend that you each have slightly different names for this site and page.
You can see an example of what I'm talking about http://web.mac.com/hoovmoss/iWeb/" target="_blank">here.
If you plan on building additional sites and splitting the domain files on one or more of the laptops to do it, though, you are probably better off using the method that mp suggested above.
I've been keeping a sites index "site" at the top of each domain file (I have one for each site on the index page), but I'm beginning to find that inconvenient, as I plan on adding at least one more site. Someday soon I'll create a domain file containing only a sites index and then manually replace the index.html file in my idisk as necessary to keep the site index linked to my short url.
If this is more confusing than helpful, let me know and I'll see if I can be a little clearer.

  • Time Machine: Backup folder changing size when connected to different computers

Can someone please help me wrap my head around why the size of my Time Machine backup folder changes when connected to different computers? I tried to be as thorough as possible.  Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.
I made a backup of my one laptop (MacBook Pro running 10.6.8) before installing Mavericks.  The backup folder size is 258.56 GB and it is on a 1TB WD external.  There are no other computers backed up in this folder.
Last night, I tried to copy the backup folder to another 1TB WD external and ran into the “you can’t do that” message.  After some researching, I came across articles explaining how Time Machine handles HDs and, in order for me to copy my backup folder, the drive I want to copy the folder to needs to have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected.
Okay, so here is my situation: I have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected and journaling is correct on the drive I want to copy the backup folder to.  So I can continue working on my laptop, I want to use a different computer to copy the backup folder from one HD to the other.  The problem I’m having is each computer I own is showing me a different backup folder size O.o.
    (1) The computer I want to use – a Power Mac G5 Quad running 10.4.11 (non intel) – is showing a backup folder size of 592.7 MB, but the HD shows there is 258 GB being used.  When I drag copy, I only get a 592.7 MB backup folder.  For some reason, the backup folder is the only folder acting this way. I compared other folders from the same and different externals and all the sizes match up perfectly no matter the computer they were connected to. How is this possible?
    (2) My second option - Mac Pro (early 2009) running 10.9.4 – is showing a 256.15 GB backup folder size.  Very close, but not 258.56 GB.
    (3) My last option is to use the computer I’m trying to stay away from, the MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.  This is the computer I backed up and is showing me the correct folder size = 258.56GB.  As I mentioned, I'd like to work on my laptop while copying the backup folder using one of my other computers.
I am able to drag and drop from each computer, but the folder size depends on the computer I’m using.  I don’t understand why I can't do a simple drag and drop of a 258 GB folder.
    Many thanks!!

The directory files that you are seeing are not real. They are links to the actual backup files that are stored in a hidden directory on the drive. If you were to look at the same drive on a pc, you would see the folders and you would a list files that are in the folders but the files would all be 0 byte files and Windows will tell you the file is empty because there is nothing there but a link which Windows does not understand.
So the point is you can't just copy the backupd files. The best solution that I know of (and maybe someone else will chime in) for copying them is to mirror the drive with something like Carbon Copy or some other program.
See this site for more information about time machine and how it works: http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html

  • Different accounts in different computers

Me and my wife have different acounts, in different computers (with differente ios devices), in the past we share of music and books bought from itunes without problems, but know I found the restriction of 90 days to change de AppleID
¿How can now share our content bouth between our two accounts?

    Hi Dongoyo79,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below explains how your Apple ID can be used for different services.  If the majority of your iTunes purchases are on one of your Apple ID's -- you can sign out of the iTunes Store and sign back in using that Apple ID and password.  You can continue to use your other Apple ID to keep all of your data separate for iCloud, etc.
The other option is to use your own Apple ID for iTunes AND iCloud.  If you have separate User accounts on your computer, then you could each build your own iTunes library.  Review the article below and decide which option is best for you.
Using your Apple ID for Apple services
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4895
An Apple ID is the email address you use as a login for just about everything you do with Apple, including using iCloud to store your content, buying songs from the iTunes Store, and downloading apps from the App Store.
When you set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can use the same Apple ID for iCloud services and purchases on the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBooks Store. You can also use one Apple ID for iCloud services and another Apple ID for store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match). You will get all the benefits of iCloud whether you use the same Apple ID for iCloud and store purchases, or different IDs for each.
The following section explains these two approaches.
Using the same Apple ID for Store purchases and iCloud (recommended)
Using one Apple ID for iCloud and a different Apple ID for Store Purchases
    Frequently Asked Questions
I have purchased music, apps, or books with multiple Apple IDs. How can I get all of this content onto my iOS device?

First, you need to copy all of your purchased content so it is on the same Mac or PC with iTunes. This computer should be the one you sync your device with. For more information on how to move your content, see these articles:
Mac:  iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between computers
PC:  iTunes for Windows: How to copy purchases between computers
Next, authorize your computer to play content with each Apple ID in iTunes. Once your computer is authorized for all your content, it can be synced to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
I hope this information helps ....
