Multiple Users/Logging In Problem

Using Multiple Users I added a second user to our iMac DV400 (blueberry, slot loading) running OS9.2.1. The problem: now we can only log on to the second user's desktop and can't access the primary user's desktop. Since the second user is set up with limited user privileges, we can't access the system programs; most importantly, the Multiple Users program so that we can revert this problem by deleting the second user from the system. Can anyone offer some help?
Thanks

Welcome to Apple Discussions pd,
Start from your Mac OS installer CD (insert it and hold the c key, release the key when you see the "Welome To Macintosh" message)
Open your hard drive and locate the System folder. Open that and locate the Preferences folder. From that folder, delete the three preference files and one folder with "Multi User" in their names.
Restart as normal and empty the trash. You will have to re-create the user accounts.

Multiple users logged into one server, each users printer has a different name, application needs ONE name to print to.
I'm NOT in any way a Terminal Services expert and I need help trying to get an application program working in a multi-user environment.
The issue is that the printer changes for every user that is logged in. The application needs to print NOT to the default printer, but to a "special" printer which is selected in the application... let's call it a label printer to simplify the explanation.
You have your default regular printer, easy for the application to find that one, and then you have a special printer that labels get printed onto. The application needs to know what printer is the label printer. So we allow the user to select that in the
application and the selection is stored in a config file in
C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
I don't have access to the application so I can't change how this works.
In the "regular" world, selecting the label printer driver to use should be per machine, NOT per user. When a new user logs into a machine, the physical printer doesn't go "poof" and a new printer suddenly appear. Same printer for all
users.
Yet in terminal services, the physical machine is "merged" with the virtual machine on the server. And there can be many users logged in at the same time. So each users real machine (and real printer) is injected into the "fake" terminal
services machine. The name of the printers is made unique for each user. So the printers DO go "poof" and change names depending on the user logged into terminal services.
So user "A" logs in and sets up the application to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" (or whatever the name of the printer happens to be), that setting is stored in the ProgramData subfolder, and all is well. Later, user "B" logs
in, and when they print, the application tries to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" which doesn't exist for user B or is only accessible by user A. If user B re-configures, that breaks it for user A.
SOLUTION 1: The way that /should/ work (in my mind) is that you define one "generic" printer in Terminal Services... call it "Virtual Label printer" and when the user wants to print to it, the print job gets re-directed back to whatever
physical printer is actually connected to their local workstation. There is a map of virtual printer to actual printer depending on the current user. The application is told once to print to "Virtual Label Printer" for all users.
SOLUTION 2: Or... there should be some way to make the ProgramData sub folders separate per user. E.g. when user "A" tries to access:
C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
they actually get
C:\UserData\UserA\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
and user "B" gets
C:\UserData\UserB\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
So the question I have is: Does either of those solutions exist hidden somewhere in the setup of terminal server? Or is there another way around this issue that I don't know?

I don't really have a "for sure" answer to this, but because people here can't seem to deal with a question that hasn't been answered I'll provide the best answer I did receive from ServerFault.com user Nathan:
I can feel your pain with using old software on terminal servers ...the solution I've come up with definitely won't scale as it requires some manual configuration, but I've gotten this method to work with our label printers (which require to be
printed to an LPT port...yep, that old).
Share your USB-connected printers to the network on each machine. Then, have the user log in on aunique session for each of them
(a TS account cannot be shared among computers for this to work) and install a network printer pointing to the USB one they shared. Try to use a DNS name to account for possible DHCP movements.
After, it should work. Each user can do this since display names can be identical as long as the ports are different (which they are).
This was clarified by the following series of comments:
I think you are on to something here, and I originally advised the admin to do this. The problem he ran into is that it setup the printer names in the TS as "printer on usersworkstation"
and he could not rename it except to change the "printer" to whatever. E.g. the "on userworkstation" remained. I believe there is another way of installing the printer which avoids this, but I can't find it. Ages ago, one used to do NET
USE LPT2 \\computer\printer password /USER:domain\user /PERSISTENT:YES and then tell the driver to print to LPT2 –  James

@JamesNewton That's actually the exact method we used. The way around the "network printer" part is to install it as local printer and map it to a TCP/IP port that way. –  Nathan

You mean in the case where the printers are TCP/IP connected and not local USB / LPT to the users workstation? That makes sense. Wonder if this will work for USB connected printers... –  James

@JamesNewton You'd share the local printer on the client's PC then on the server connect via TCP/IP to it. You'd need static addresses or use DNS names if DHCP, though. –  Nathan

Ah. Yes. I see. Looks like the LPT thing should work even with a USB connected printer:superuser.com/questions/182655/… –  James

• How can I get Firefox to run on a network with multiple users logging on with the same user name and password?

I am trying to get Firefox running on a large network where I have multiple users that log on with the same user name and password. The problem is that when another user logs on to another computer the message comes up that their is already an instance of firefox running on that computer even though there really isn't. Only one instance can be run on the network at one time. I believe it is because firefox stores a shared profile as it thinks it is actually the same user even though it is being run on another computer. I repeat that each user that logs on uses the same user name and password but on different computers.

• How to enable multiple users logging in to the same client machine?

Hi,
We have our home directories shared from the server (using AFP) and this allows our users to log in to any machine via the normal console login.
But if you try to remotely login to a machine with ssh, and another user is already logged in at the machine, then you get the error message:
Could not chdir to home directory /Network/Servers/machinename/Users/keith: No such file or directory
I can connect (via) ssh, only if no user is logged in at the console. If I connect with ssh when no users are logged in, and then a user logs in at the console, then this unmounts the home directory for the ssh user.
I have read about the mnthome command, and if I try running this (from my ssh login whilst there is a console login) then I get the error message:
Error: Mount failed with error 1 Operation not permitted
I'm assuming that multiple ssh logins must be allowed somehow? Can you only do this if you share your home directories with NFS (in this case, I understand that all home directories always appear mounted on each client)???
Any help appreciated,
Keith
Server and all clients running 10.4.3
iBook & PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Thanks for the info. I really thought that this would be a fixable problem. I also thought that it might work when two different users both logged in using ssh only (i.e. when there is no console login). But this also causes problems for the second ssh login.
What practical work-arounds have people tried? The respondent to your other post (linked to above) suggested that NFS sharing might work, only that ssh logins still don't mount the home directory. Is this the case?
Thanks for the speedy answer.

• How to disable multiple users logging

hi
I posted a question earlier and googled the same question but found no fruitfull solutions.
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=748292
Rather than solving the problem i am looking for a way around it. Is it possible to Allow just one user to login to the website from one PC?
lets say user opens two windows and both have login page of the website. If user logs in from window1 and tries to login again from window2 (even with same username) the error page displays the message. How would this be possible?
I do something like this but this doesnt work
           HttpSession userSession = request.getSession(false);
           if(userSession!=null) {
                   System.out.println("Entered here");
           userSession.invalidate();

• Is Lightroom supported in a Active Directory domain environment with multiple users logging into a machine?

We are a school district using an Active Directory environment.  We currently use other Adobe products with multiple users on different machines and it works fine.  If Lightroom does work in a domain environment what are the required local user permissions needed for it tor work properly?  Thanks!

Lightroom is not a multiuser program. It is required that the catalog is located on a hard drive that is local to the machine accessing it. There are no workarounds.

• Shut down with multiple users logged in

Is there a way to shut down the Mac with other users logged in, or do you have to log out each person individually? Any shortcuts to log out everyone and shut down?

Hi Peter
Just shut it down, then you should get a message saying that you need to enter administrator name and password because others are still logged in.Enter name and password press ok. It should shut down then

• Sharing iTunes on one machine with multiple users... problems...

Hi, I've recently done a fresh installation of XP, and have downloaded iTunes 7.1
It's set up as follows:
1 machine, 3 users:
Administrator(Admin account) ; Me (limited) ; My partner (limited).
I have set up the itunes folder in the shared documents as suggested in the apple KB article about multiple users on one machine.
As administrator, I imported a CD and it's artwork from the store.
Pointed all three users to the folder in the shared documents - exactly as per the KB article.
I went into my everyday account, and pointed itunes to the itunes folder in the shared documents.
it didn't see the tracks. I had to use the add folder to library in the file menu in order to get itunes to see it.
is this just something that has to be accepted, or is there a way of making the folder 'live' so that i don't need to keep updating my library manually? - almost like a refresh?..

Unfortunaely iTunes doesn't monitor for new files, so if you import a CD in one account, it will have to be added to the libraries of the other accounts manually - if the users want it.
I guess this is both good and bad as it means that each account can have its own music choices while at the same time sharing a common pool of music files.

• UPS auto shutdown with multiple users logged in

How does this work? If I have more than one user logged in, the power goes out and the computer decides (based on the settings I have selected for UPS) to shut down, will it be able to complete the shutdown? When I do it manually I have to log out the other users.
Thanks.

It depends on what the users are/were doing.
If there are unsaved changes, OSX will put up the usual warning about unsaved changes, and shut down everything else.
If there aren't any such things preventing it, yes, it will do a complete shutdown.

• Parallels 7- Multiple User Accounts Install Problem

Today installed Parallels v7.0.1 and WinXP Pro SP3 onto Mac Mini on Lion 10.7.2.  Windows ran ok on my main admin account, but when I logged into the 2nd "Standard" account and clicked on Parallels in the Applications folder, an install window for WinXP popped up, which confused me as I was certain that I installed Parallels and WinXP for all users.  Should I reinstall WinXP again for the 2nd user?
I found this document on the Parallels website entitled: http://kb.parallels.com/en/9303  Step 1 states to "Open Virtual Machines Directory", but I'm a Parallels newbie and have no clue where the "Virtual Machines Directory" is located.  I went out of coherence mode to see if there were other options or preferences for Parallels, but have no clue where to start.  Can someone please inform with step by step, detailed instructions?  I'm not sure if those instructions pertain to the newer v7.0 version.
One more thing, IE is not able to connect to the internet and I have no idea why.
Thank you.

In Parallels, go to Parallels menu > Preferences > General and look at "Virtual Machine Folder'. You can click on the folder listed there and select "Choose Folder". That will show you where your Virtual Machine Folder is. Just click the "Cancel" button to exit the dialog. Chances are, the Virtual Machine Folder is just the "Parallels" folder inside your "Documents" folder.
When you have multiple accounts on a Mac, each account has its own Documents folder. While you can run Parallels in any account, only the currently running account can see its Documents folder. If you copy files to the /Users/Shared folder, then all users will be able to access them.
If you read that Parallels support document closely, it will tell you exactly how to find your Parallels virtual machines and move them to that shared area. Then you can configure Parallels in multiple accounts to access the same virtual machine file.
I can't help with the IE problem. For that you will have to ask in the Parallels forum.

• Cannot have multiple users logged in at once on a single client computer

I am running OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Pro, and have two iMacs (27.5") as clients in my workgroup.
Computer A : Server
Computer B, C : Client machines
The problem is that when user1 is logged onto the server network drive (/Network/Servers/ComputerA/Users/~user1/) from a given client (say ComputerB), it is not possible to login another user (user2) onto the server network drive from client Computer B.
It IS possible however for user2 to log in from another client machine (ComputerC) without any problem and access his home directory.
Similarly it IS possible for a local user to log onto ComputerB while a network user is logged onto the central file server.
If user1 is logged into ComputerB, and user 2 is logged onto ComputerC, if user1 ssh's over to Computer B, he can log in, but he cannot access his home directory, getting the following error:
Could not chdir to home directory /Network/Servers/nplab0/Users/chris_dimattina: Permission denied
-bash: /Network/Servers/nplab0/Users/chrisdimattina/.bashprofile: Permission denied
and gets sent to the root directory of ComputerB.
Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks,
Chris

Thanks!
What can I do to fix it? Should I use NFS protocol instead?
I basically want to make my workgroup into a standard UNIX workgroup where lots of different people can be logged in and running jobs on the same machine.

• No sleep with multiple users logged in

Hi there,
In order to access multiple iTunes-Libraries from my apple TV (Main, Archive, Childrens) I have set up three useraccounts on my macMini each with its own iTunes Library. When booting up I log in to all three accounts and start iTunes.
It all works well except sleep!
When only one user (Main) is logged in sleep works normally. When the other users are logged in at the same time the mini stays awake even if there is no activity.
Any suggestions how to fix this or how to share multiple Libraraies from one useraccount?
Thank You for Your suggestions.
Cenar

Is it any one user or just Main that works correctly. If it is just Main, is there anything in the other users' login items that may be causing it to not sleep?
You can try looking in the Console for messages about sleep. Type sleep into the search field and see if anything is preventing sleep.

• Network user log in problem

Can not create a network user, with home on the server.
I;m sure I am missing something, but can't seem to find it.
Any suggestions/pointers greatly appreciated.
The layout:
Server = Mini, 10.6.2, Open directory master, private network
Client1 = G4, 10.4.11, hardwired
Client2 = MacBook, 10.5.8, wireless
Airport extreme, handling dhcp
On the server a share point "Homes" created, with enable automount, use for home folders.
On the server user "zxc" is created, home folder set to afp://xyz.private/Homes.
Preferences for login managed, with "add network home share point" checked.
Client1 attempts to login and gets: "...account login failed....the home folder is located on AFP or SMB server...."
Client2 attempts to login and after delay, gets shaken off with no error.
Changing the home folder in workgroup manager to none, results in Client1 logging in but with error "...folder 99 can not be accessed .... premissions..." which would seem to confirm that Client1 is connecting to the server but having issues with home folder.
Don't know why Client1 can not log in, or why Client2 is not acting the same as Client1 ?
Did I miss something in setting up the network home folder? It shows up in the Home panel for the user and shows the correct home url and full path. Logging in on Client1 as a local user, I can connect to the server and mount the home folder using the "zxc" user and password.
I'm lost where to look next.
Thanks.

I encountered this issue when we did a clean install of 10.6 server to replace 10.4 server on our Mac Pro. The 10.4 clients cannot correctly distinguish the CNAME records of the 10.6 server. This VERY IMPORTANT piece of information is missing from the 10.6 administration guides.
Open Directory, like Active Directory, heavily relies on correct DNS setting. Your DNS settings are the first thing to look at.
The fix is simple. On the Mac client machines make sure the following is done:
1: Login with a local admin account. In the Network system preference make sure the primary DNS server IP address is the IP address of the OSX server.
On the OSX Server in the DNS manager you need to specify the external or "relay" IP address of your ISP's DNS server(s) if it is not already there. This way if the internal Mac DNS server cannot resolve the name they will push the request to the external DNS server. 10.6 server's wizard automatically assigns the external DNS entry to Server Admin when you set up the server.
2: Go into the utilities folder on the 10.4 client and open Directory Access. You should have the LDAP entry of the Mac OS X server. to the right of that is LDAP settings come from pull down menu. Choose Open Directory; it probably was set on automatic. 10.4 clients do not understand the automatic open directory server CNAME entries, you have to specifically tell then to use Open Directory as the LDAP source.
If you do not have a LDAP entry then you need to add it. type in the IP address or the DNS name of your mac server. Choose Open Directory as the LDAP entry type.
The "Cannot login to the user account because the home directory is located on an AFP/SMB server" error message is a constant headache to OSX admins because the error message doesn't tell you anything.
You should now be able to click on "other" and login to you AFP mounted home directory.
