Music video/magnetic timeline - how to keep things in sync?

I'm working on a wedding video that is set to music.  Certain parts of the song really belong with certain clips.  It would be great to park those clips over the song and have them always be connected to that point in the song.  But with the magnetic timeline, any adjustments made prior to that point in the song will move around the clips so they are no longer aligned where I want them to be.
I love the benefits of the magnetic timeline except this...when you're really trying to set things to a music track, it seems impossible to really lock down transition points or align markers relative to the music and have them stick with further modification.
Hopefully there is just something I'm missing about the way I should be working with it.
What are your workflows and tips for aligning video to specific points in an underlaying audio track throughout an entire project?

So I started arranging my project where the music track was the primary storyline and all video is connected to it on a secondary storyline.  In theory this seems like it is working.  But there's one thing I can't seem to wrap my head around still.
I would like to connect certain things to my secondary storyline (as if it were my primary storyline) such as B-roll and connected audio.  This way if I am adjusting things on this secondary storyline, these audio and/or B-roll clips remain in sync with the clip they belong to.
Seems like turning these "connected" clips into a compound clip somewhat solves the issue, but I don't like two things about this method:
1.  The different elements are not visible until you go into the compound clip.  This lack of visibility of the elements in the timeline bothers me.  I like to see the different "tracks" all at once.  (such as how in the image below I can see the two audio tracks connected to the video clip).
2. If I connect all the clips (like in the image below) into a compound clip, I get one big clip that has blank video in front of and in back of the actual video.  This makes transitions and dealing with collisions difficult or impossible in and out of this video since this compound clip can't be added to the secondary storyline.
What I would like to do is be able to anchor clips into a secondary storyline like you do to a primary storyline.  Is this possible?  How does one lock audio to a clip in a secondary storyline?
When video is on primary storyline, audio elements are connected to it.  As I move the video around, the audio remains where it should. I like this behavior.
A compound clip of the two audio tracks and video track have black area before and after video, making transitions and adding it to the secondary storyline impossible.
Any way to attach these audio clips to the secondary storyline without a compound clip?

  • Cannot fast forward in music video mode.  How can I accomplish this

Cannot fast forward in music video mode.  How can I accomplish this.  Cannot rewind either.  Am I missing something?  If I change the Music Video to TV Show or Movie can both rewind or fast forward.   For now all concert videos are in Movies, which might be the right place for them, but kinda weird Itunes does this.

I am by no mean an expert and I'm sure there are easier ways to accomplish this... however one way is to do something like this:
-Use selection tool to select all blue background, soften the edges of the selection then delete the selection.
-Here you will have a white background and dull looking image with not the greatest edges.
-Zoom waaaay in and use a softer eraser brush on the edges.
-Use various sharpening, brightening, white levels adjustments to make your image prettier.
-Pay attention to the diamond, select the diamond with a selector tool and sharpen, etc. Consider adding a layer to add additional detail to just the diamond.
-Consider using the clone stamp to smooth out any markings on the silver tone band.

  • ITunes Match music videos are ineligible, how can I get them back onto my iPod?

    Hi,
I subscribed to iTunes Match earlier today, turned it on and did the same on my ipod touch but have now discovered all my music videos are ineligible and can't be tansfered via iCloud. It wont allow me to sync my iPod via USB cable. Is there anyway I can get my videos back onto my iPod? Thanks

I'm looking into this as well. Most of my videos were purchased from apple and showed up originally. But, I had a lot of problems with the tags in my regular music and had to more or less purge my iCloud library. Afterwards, I had the same problem as you. iTunes would no longer match the iTunes purchased music videos.
Anyhow, there is a quick way to get them transfered to your iPod.
Right click on the videos and use "Get Info" to change them to a "TV Show."
You can also set the "Show" to something like "Music Videos."
I also set all then music videos grouping to "Music Video."
Created a smart playlist that just listed all things grouped as such.
Make sure Sync TV Shows is checked.
I may have left a step or two out. But, you should be able to handle the rest from there.
This is what I'm doing at least until I find a better solution.

  • This is my first time using FCPX and I just completed editing a music video. What are the last things I have to do to get the best quality out of my video before I try to upload it to youtube?

I want my music video to look as crisp as possible. I was wondering if there were an tricks or tips that needs to be done before i upload it to youtube. This will be my first time uploading anything to youtube so im not sure. also what does rendering mean? and compressing? thanks

Best quality = "master file" export. You can export said file and store it where ever you like.
But quality "out" depends on what you put "in." You can never "improve" on the quality during the edit process. If you had low quality H.264 files to begin with, that's the best it's gonna get. If you had HQ ProRes422 or even 4444... (which is "above" 2k HD quality) those are great. And the output will be rich. But most likely, you will have to compress that file to exhibit it. (I'll get to that later.)
Now, when you share to YouTube, you will be limited on quality. They have a prescribed bit-rate and compression. (Even though they do offer 1080p.)
Now, you will NOT be able to share a "master" file to YouTube. Much too big.
Luckily, in the share options, FCPX has an option for "YouTube." It does all the compression for you. BTW: This is awesome. It finds your account and does the "posting" for you. It's simple.
Rendering = calculations made on various effects. A non linear editor has to build files for some effects... dissolves, moves, filters, etc, etc. The software does "math" and crunches numbers--to make your image animate across the screen, example. This is called "rendering." Depending on your preferences, this is done for you.
Now when you output or "share," rendering is done for you automatically. If you choose to see how an effect will look "smoothed out," you can choose to render a file on the fly.
Compression means just that. Video files are, by nature, huge... billions of O's and 1's. To make them flow thru various pipelines (the electronic infrastruture) most files are compressed--or made smaller. Basically, some of the duplicate O's and 1's are taken out. (It's much more complicated than that, I'm givng a laypersson's definition.) The more you compress, the less quality you get. The picture begins to look "jig-jagged" or pixelated. There is less detail in the picture.
When you go to "share" to YouTube, FCPX will do this compression for you, up to (or should I say, "down to") YouTube's specs.

  • How to embed a music video in facebook, how to embed a music video in facebook

I just want to share an iTunes music video on facebook.

Unless you have the physical file on your system or an embed code from the original source, you can't.
Additionally, if you don't hold the copyright for the video, you're possibly violating the DMCA if you do post it.

  • How to keep playlists in sync between two computers?

I have a MacBook Pro and a regular desktop Windows 7, and I have all of my music on both of them. However, I constantly keep adding new songs to different playlists all the time, and this makes it hard to keep everything in sync with both computers and my iPod because I usually sync from my Mac.
Right now I export the updated playlists on one of the computers and import it on the other, but it's quite the hassle just to keep some playlists in sync. I tried using home sharing, but it just keeps downloading duplicates everytime I try to import, I would've thought it was smarter by just adding the new songs but appearently it isn't.
So, anyways, is there any easy way for me to automatically keep playlists in sync between two computers?

I am indeed subscribed to iTunes Match.  Are you saying that with Match, it will sync my playlists?  I will have to check this when I get home.  That would really be a nice surprise!
I sync my iPod to iTunes on my Windows 7 box, but use iTunes on my Mac for synching my iPhone 6 and iPad 2.  Normally, I'd be modifying a playlist on the Win 7 box, adding or rearranging songs.  However, occasionally, I might download a song to the iPhone while out and about.  Then, when I'm back at the Mac, I'd do a sync and add that new song to one of the playlists.  Should Match then be keeping the playlists on the two machines in sync?
As for the library replication, I had to do that when I first signed up for Match.  I was WAY over the 25k song limit, so I made a copy of the library, and in that copy deleted enough songs to get me under the limit.  Also discovered scripting and did some really neat things with that tool.  Still have the option when I start iTunes to use the old library, just in case there's something there I need to copy to the smaller lib.

  • MobileMe calendar sync consistently failing to keep things in sync

    Hello,
I've been noticing for quite a while that in my setup, mobileme sync keeps failing to keep contacts in sync.
My setup is quite basic: 1 iphone, 1 mobileme account, 1 macbook pro.
The iphone is set to push contacts, calendars, and bookmarks.
The mac is set to sync automatically the changes.
Whenever I modify a contact card in my iphone, after a few days I notice the data has been reverted back to the original data. For example, I add a phone number to X contact. After a few days, the number has disappeared. Beejive uses the contacts to store the IM id of each contact: however contacts consistently lose this added data after a while.
I cannot tell exactly how long it takes, because I don't look for it, I jsut notice after a while.
I first noticed this almost 1 year ago when I bought my iphone 3g.. I was all happy taking pictures of my co workers to store in their contact cards.. after a few weeks I found a few of them who I was absolutely sure I had taken pictures of, but their contact cards were empty.
A few months ago I upgraded to a family pack, and just to be sure I created a new mobileme account and changed to that account at my mac and iphone.. but the problem keeps happening.
Any ideas? Am I the only one having this kind of paranormal mobileme sync?

Same here. We have two iphones (his and hers) which we sync to the desktops and with each other using MobileMe. Just this week we noticed it: every time my wife enters an event from her iphone it creates a new calendar that shows up in Mobile Me and on my iphone and contains not only the new entry but assorted other entries (not very many) that were formerly displayed in the default calendar. Oddly, while MobileMe and my iphone both show two calendars, my wife's iphone only shows one calendar that has ALL the entires on it. Very strange. Apple must have made some change recently that causes this. Hope they fix it soon.

  • I selected manually manage music for my iTouch yet it keeps trying to sync to my entire music library.  I do not want that as it is taking up too much space.  How can I stop my iTouch from continuing to try and sync so I can manually manage my music?

How do I get my iTouch to manually manage my music?  I selected manually manage, yet every time I hook my iTouch to my computer, it attempts to sync and load my entire library.  I do not want the entire library as it takes up too much space and I don't want all of those songs on my iTouch.  What am I missing?  What else can I do?

Oops, sorry, I think you probably already did what I suggested (turning off auto synch).
I have the same question - how to synch, say, just one playlist.
There is an option to synch only things that are checked. But everything (in every playlist and item, is checked and there doesn't appear to be a box to "uncheck all", nor can you check each playlist individually.

  • I rented a movie. It's not showing up in my video file. Only music videos are. How do I find it?

I rented a movie. I synced my computer and my iPad. The movie isn't anywhere on my iPad. I looked in videos, but the only tab at the top of the page is Music. No movie tab to click. Anyone know where the movie might be?

It's probably still on your computer.  Rental movies can't be synced like other videos since they can only exist on one device at a time, your computer or your iPad.  Connect your iPad to your computer and select the movies tab.  At the top of the page you'll see rented movies separate from purchased movies.  Select the movie you want and click the "Move" button.

  • Personal Apple ID on my work iPad - how to keep things private when others use it.

I have a company iPad, we do not have corporate accounts, so I use my Apple ID to log in, make purchases, etc. I also have several apps that, by nature, are both personal and business (LinkedIn, etc). However, sometimes other employees need to use the iPad for business purposes (process an order, play a video,
Is there an easy way I can protect the apps that are more 'private' (email, linkedin, notes, etc) without having to jump through hoops every time a coworker needs to use the device?

If you use a "shared" iOS device( used sequentially by multiple users) you are best to set it up with no email or personal  info and a generic iTunes account(unique to the device, but set up by the company),  used to install apps. etc.  Like Toaster said, the situation you are in is not pretty.  Your personal information is open to compromise.  You need to tell your company this is a breach of your privacy. It just isn't worth your peace of mind to go forward in this situation.

  • 1 address book 2 users - how to keep things separate?

    Hi
I have 1 address book 'file' separated into two groups - my contacts and my wifes contacts. The 'file' is in icloud and thus syncs between our iMac and our iphones. Generally this works fine but there are a couple of drawbacks -
    1. obviously both of us have both groups of contacts on our phones (I have mine and hers and she has hers and mine); not a huge issue but not perfect. Is there anyway of automatically syncing just individual groups so I can sync just mine and she hers?
    2. a bigger issue is that when you create a new contact using the iphone there seems to be no way of specifying which group you want to add it to and it just gets created in 'all contacts' - I'm assuming this is a limitation of the contact app on the phone?
    3. as a result of the issue above I have a bunch of 'orphan contacts' that I need to locate and move to the right group. Using Address Book I can not figure out how to tell what group a contact is actually in (other than looking at the list of contacts in a selected group obviously) - is there a way of seeing what group a contact is assigned too?
I've tried making a smart group specifying the contents should be cards not in any group but as I've seen in other postings here that simply doesn't work with iCoud storred files - any ideas?
    Many thanks

    Thanks Barney.
You have helped me understand my requirements more clearly but I don't think I'm explaining my self very well.
I think ICloud is great  (I was one of those that paid £70 each year for mobile me) - My issue is with groups on address book.
I now understand that iOS devises just don't do what I'd expect which is to allow me to add a new contact to a specific group (shame as it is kind of a basic function)
What I don't understand is why, when back on my Mac, I can't find out which contacts need to be moved to a group. Smart groups plain just don't work and there seems to be no other way of finding them other than totally manually.
Either I've missed something it's a poor design - any ideas?

  • HELP! How to keep my iphone sync to my pc after format?

I'm planning to format my pc! I know that my iphone can sync with only one itunes library! so how can i safely format my pc and keep my iphone synchronized with it, without fear of losing my songs or apps? I'm using windows 7

Make a backup of everything you want to keep (your iTunes Library in particular) then restore from the back-up after formatting.
However, do you really need to go to all the effort of re-formatting? Perhaps some basic PC maintenance would save you the hassle and give you the same result?

  • How to keep 2 macs synced

I have a Macbook Pro that I use for my home & office computer.  I am thinking about purchasing an iMac for my office so i do not have to lug the laptop back and forth.  My questions is: is there a way to keep the two computers synced?  Same apps, music etc...  Any solutions and/or suggestions are appreciated.
    Thank you

Most stuff can be synced via iCloud.  Music can be synced via iTunes Match.  I use DropBox for files and passwords (1Password).
