Muting the soundtrack of a clip

How can I mute the soundtrack of a videoclip when I use the clip in a project? I want to add another soundtrack to it and I don't want them to me mixed up.

How can I mute the soundtrack of a videoclip when I use the clip in a project?
Import the clip to the Project window. Select the clip and the "Audio" tool. Set the volume level to zero in the audio tool window. "Pin" your new audio to the clip. Then adjust length (in/out handles) and/or volume as desired.
I want to add another soundtrack to it and I don't want them to me mixed up.
Added audio "pinned" to the clip will be displayed as a "green" ribbon below the main clip. Both the clip and ribbon can be individually selected and their volumes adjusted independently using the audio tool.

  • When cutting a clip the soundtrack is also cut..

    Hi
Can anyone tell me how to cut just the video clip I want to edit rather than everything at that point in the timeline?
I'm finding that I keep cutting up the soundtrack music unintentionally.
    Many thanks.

As I show you in my book, when you have a clip selected on your timeline, only that clip will be split.
When you have no clip selected, all tracks will be split at the CTI's position.

  • Exporting the soundtrack

I know this is probably a very, very, very, frequently asked question, but I can't pin it down anywhere, so I need to ask it here. Sorry.
What I want to do is save a short section of the soundtrack of a project clip as a WAV file, (or some other editable sound format), export it to a sound editor, clean it up and enhance it, then import it back to my project and sync it back to the action. It's only a brief few seconds of dialogue.
Please, how do I do that?
    Thanks, guys.

  • How do I pre-render only portions of the timeline or selected clips?

I'm switching from Vegas Pro to Premiere Pro. In Vegas, you select a portion of the timeline, then hit control-B and it pre-renders that segment.
In Premiere, you hit enter, but it doesn't pay attention to the selected clips, it just pre-renders the entire sequence.
This wouldn't be such a big problem except I'm managing projects that are fairly long, with 20-30 sequences and 20 or so nested sequences in each project and I'm switching between around 18 different projects for a series of 23 or so videos.
These vids are already taxing my system resources with only a few minutes or so (referencing about 80-120gb of source footage), but my office comp is kinda weak.
The problem is that when I pre-render a nested sequence and bring it back to the main timeline, I have to pre-render it *again* after making the next set of adjustments (ie color correction, transitions etc). Then I have to do it AGAIN when I copy it to another timeline for another similar project.
Every time, it can take as long as 15 or 20 minutes (my video card is an nVidia GTX 560 Ti, it has CUDA, but prem doesn't support it for some reason).
When my main timeline glitched out, forcing me to split into different projects, it took me almost 4 hours just to copy things into place with the additional 20 minutes to load the glitched file.
Then I had to go and pre-render everything again to work my edits back into place.
Even when everything is 90% correctly laid out, I still have to wait for the entire sequence to finish pre-rendering.
As above, in Vegas Pro, I just select a portion of the timeline and the pre-render sticks to that area.
I saw an article that said you could create in and out points and use that for rendering, but it doesn't seem to be a CS6 thing.
I heard that Adobe was trying to keep CS6 up to date as a parallel thing to CC. Surely I don't have to switch to a $600/year subscription just so I can pre-render portions of the timeline like a lower-end competitor program has had for something like 5 years...?
What am I missing? There has to be a way to do this simply.

    Are you sure?
I have only 3 options on my Sequence menu.
The first is: Render Effects in Work Area (default shortcut - Enter)
    Then: Render Entire Work Area
    and: Render Audio
No other Render options are available from that menu.
Oddly, those two things are virtually identical. One of them shows 52 clips, the other showed 57 clips. With 26389 frames (approximately...) ETA is around 20-25 mins. That's not very workflow friendly.
It is smart enough that if I pre-render once, making minor changes later makes for much less pre-rendering work, but because I'm working with so many similar projects and sequences, all of them end up needing to be completely re-pre-rendered even if I'm doing a copy-paste and I need to tweak a few little things in one area of the timeline.
This was especially evident recently when in a 3 hour period, I had to go through 4 revisions and needed to keep my original iterations because the person who made the broad, sweeping decisions was making really bad decisions and I knew I would end up going back to my original plan and making a few comparatively simple changes (which is exactly what happened right after the 3 hours).
Out of 3 hours, I could have lost a good hour and a half just waiting around for pre-rendering stuff that hard already been pre-rendered, but because it had been copy-pasted, Prem couldn't see those previous pre-renders.
I actually only lost around 40 mins. But I had to reshoot footage, including setting up lights and camera angles, plus import and do color correction again thanks to no round-tripping to speedgrade and having shot in other areas with those cameras...
If I had been doing it in Vegas, I would have spent only around 10 minutes doing those pre-renders. Oh and Vegas can use my GPU... I'm an Adobe guy mainly, so it's frustrating to see Vegas win on silly niggles like this.

  • How can i detach the video from a clip so i can only use the audio when using imovie?

how can i detach the video from a clip so i can only use the audio when using imovie?

First, go to iMovie/Preferences and enable the Advanced Tools.
Import the video clip into an iMovie Event. When you get ready to use it in an iMovie Project, select the clip in the Event and drag & drop it on top of a video or photo clip in the project at the place where you want it to begin. When the pop-up menu appears, choose Audio Only.

  • How do I use just the audio from a clip in imovie? No picture, no video, just audio!

I want to put the audio from a clip at the end of the video. No video, just black screen

It will require a bit of a workaround. But it can be done. If you enable Advanced Tools under the iMovie Preferences (Go to the iMovie Menu > Preferences). Enable Advanced Tools by clicking the checkbox.
Now create  a title with a black background by dragging at title to the end of the video on the Project timeline. Once the title is there, delete all the text on the title. Now drag that black background directly dead center onto the video clip just before the end where you want to 'blot out' the video and just have audio. When you release the mouse, you will be shown a pop-up menu with a bunch of different options including one titled cut-away. Choose this option. What will happen is the video will cut to the black video background you dragged on top of the video clip. You can set the duration by dragging the left and right edges out further to make it run longer. This black back ground effectively cover the video and will continue to play the audio of the underlying video clip.

And replace it with what? transparency? You'll need to work in a format that supports that like png or psd. So you'll need a good editor too.

  • How do I change the fps of a clip?

    Hi,
I'm working on an HD project with a sequence running at 23.98fps. Most of my clips are running at this speed except for a couple which are somehow running way too fast even though the audio is at the right speed.
Is there a simple way I can change the fps of a clip?
    Fingers crossed
    Matt

I think you're using Final Cut Pro. This is the Final Cut Express forum.

  • Is there a way to adjust the volume on all clips so they all have the same volume?

I'm making a highlight film of my two children, and wonder if there is a way to make all clips have the same volume. I know I can adjust the individual clips decibel niveau, but ven though I adjust them to the same level i.e -6 decibel, the clips volume are not the same. Any suggestion, or do I have to adjust each clip with different decibels niveaus and try to make the volume the same, like one clip can have -6 decibel, one light have 3 decibel and so on in order for the volume to be Aamodt the same.

On the Time Line you can copy the clip (Command-c) that has the levels you want. Select the other clips and hit Shift+Command-V to paste effects. Check the Audio attributes.

  • How can I reset the CTI for each clip to 00:00?

I'm brand new to this - got Premier Elements 12 yesterday, so please bear with me.
I have clips from a soccer game, each of which starts with 00:00. I have written notes about key scenes in each clip using the time that scene occurs in each clip. But when I add clips to the timeline, each clip's CTI begins at the point where the last clip's left off. So, say I wanted to get to a scene in clip 2 at 0:44. But clip 1, with a duration of 4:30, precedes clip 2 in the timeline . To get to the scene I was looking for in clip 2, I'd have to add the 4:30 from clip 1 to the 0:44 in clip 2 to find my scene in the timeline at 5:14 . Obviously, the problem only gets worse with each additional clip. And near impossible when I trim clips.
One "workaround" I can use is to make a copy of the original clip in project assets, adjust the in and out points in the copy to get the scene I want, save/rename that scene and add it to the timeline instead of the original clip. Each scene would then be renamed and would show it's specific duration in the timeline. But that seems like a lot of work, to have to make copies of original clips in assets, trim them there and take them to the timeline. Back and forth, back and forth.
Is there a way to keep the start and end times of each original clip when I add it to the timeline, so I can isolate each scene in that clip and trim out the unwanted portions without having to do math or spend time making and trimming copies? To be more succinct, Can I reset the CTI at the start of each clip to 00:00 within the timeline?
I hope I've described my issue in a clear way that doesn't cause confusion. If not, please let me know what other questions you have or additional info you need to understand the issue I'm describing. Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

  • I am utilizing imovie 7.1 and I am trying to shorten the length of a clip.  How do I do that?

I am utilizing imovie 7.1 and I am trying to shorten the length of a clip.  How do I do that?

There are several ways to do this.
First, drag the clip from your Event to an iMovie Project.
In the Project, there are several options:
    1) Select the part of the clip you want to keep by dragging with your mouse. When you have it, right click within the selection and select "Trim to Selection". (You can also do this from the Edit Menu.)
    2) Select the part of the clip you want to cut by dragging with your mouse. When you have it, right-click within the selection and choose "Delete Selection". You can also do this from the Edit Menu.
There is a good Tutorial here. http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/imovie08.html#trimming

  • Audio track restarts in the middle of a clip

    Hi!
I'm having an interesting issue with the audio tracks in my Timeline.
When I start playing a clip the audio is in sync with the video. Then about 5 seconds into playing the clip the audio starts over. The playhead does not go back to the beginning, but the same audio is looped over again--and of course is now out of sync with the video track. The clips are not out of sync in the Timeline.
For example, one clip is an interview: "This duck is un-banded so I'm going to get to put a band on this duck. It's a male mallard. I can tell because it's starting to get it's green head. Although at this time of the year..." (audio cuts off and restarts): "This duck is unbanded so I'm going to get to put a band on this duck. It's a male mallard. I can tell because it's starting to get it's green head. Although at this time of the year they are molting so they don't have the brilliant green head that we're all used to seeing."
The waveform of the audio restarting is represented when I open the clip from the Timeline into the Viewer! However if I go back to the Browser to the original clip and play that, the audio track is fine.
What's going on here? What can I do to fix this besides grabbing the original clips from the Browser and replacing them in the timeline? Or forcing the audio tracks out of sync to match? (eek!)
I must have done something weird...

One example of an affected clip:
Source is from a Panasonic HD camera--so transferred to FC from a P2 card
    Item properties:
    817.5 MB
    960x720
DVCPRO HD 720p60, Interger (little Endian), Timecode
Hey--could this be caused by the frame rate of the sequence? I just noticed that the sequence these affected clips are in is 60fps, and my video clips are 23.98fps. So--I copied and pasted my clips into a new 23.98 sequence and the issue has gone away. Huh. Oops... Not enough coffee this morning.
Thanks for trying to help out--sorry to have answered my own question (duh).

  • Is there a way to re-compress the audio of a clip without re-exporting the video?

Hey guys, I have 500 clips that took me 2 days to render to ProRes just to find out that the audio is not the right format. What do i do now?
I don't want to have to re-export all those 500 files again and wait 2 more days. Is there a way to run those files through an application (either in compressor or something else) that will re-render the audio in the right format without doing anything to the video?
I know how to swap the audio of a file using QT Player 7 but I only know how to do that one file at a time. Obviously, I wouldn't even think about doing that 500 times... I'll go nuts.
What are my other options? Adobe Media Encoder? MPEG Streamclip? VLC? Anything at all?
    Any help is much appreciated

Well this workflow should work but I don't know if there might be problems down the road.
Bring all your prores files with the problem audio into compressor.  Apply the audio 48k16 bit preset to them.  This will create individual aiff files with fcp friendly settings.
Bring the resulting aiffs into fcp.  Select the video qt and audio aiff in the browser for one clip and control click on one of them and choose merge clip.  This should create new clips with the good audio as channels 3 and 4 (assuming the original files have 2 channels of audio).
You should then be able to edit the merged clip into the timeline and by just patching channels 3 and 4 (the 48k16bit audio tracks)  into your timeline and unpatching channels 1 and 2.  , you should not need to render the audio.
Try testing this workflow on one clip and see if everything works before doing all of the clips.
If any of this is not clear or you need help with any of this, post back.
Frankly, you might be just as easy and safer to reconvert all the clips with the audio enabled to 48k16bit in compressor.    You could also edit each clip into it's own sequence, replace the ng audio with aiffs made as I described above and then export reference quicktimes to edit with.
