My Acount Settings & Preferences for Mail keep verting to previous settings

The references to my "Account Directory" show my previous e-mail settings-
/User/my name/Library/Mail/POP- old email address. When I try to change these settings to my new e-mail address it immediate activates an email but without a recipients name. When I deleted the reference to my previous
e-mail address settings it keeps returning the previous settings in the Library section. I have removed all references to my previous dial-up settings in the System Preferences-Network because I am now on broadband and have been for 2 years. When I deleted the POP references to my previous e-mail address I lost ALL my inbox and outbox e-mails that I had for the last two years. I am about to upgrade from Panther to Tiger shortly which means I will have new "Mail" software. Currently I have Mail 1.3.11
Is it better to remove this e-mail settings problem as above, first or hope the upgrade to Tiger will do it for me? I prefer to get rid of my previous e-mail settings first before upgrading to Tiger. Can somone help please?

As referenced when creating an account with Mail, an account named folder is created within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail that is named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account. The accounts' mailboxes are located within the account named folder which represent the account named mailboxes under In, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk in the mailboxes drawer.
When changing the account settings for an existing account - the account's incoming mail server or email address, the name of the account named folder within the Mail folder does not change which has or should not have any adverse effect.
Deleting an email account with Mail also deletes the account named folder and the accounts' mailboxes within and an error message is provided before doing so that indicates this.
> When I try to change these settings to my new e-mail address it immediate activates an email but without a recipients name.
I haven't experienced the same or heard of this but you can't enter any recipients or cancel this new message that is created automatically?
> When I deleted the reference to my previous e-mail address settings it keeps returning the previous settings in the Library section.
This was before deleting the old account associated with the dial-up internet provider or did this also occur after deleting the dial-up account and recreating the account associated with the broadband provider?
> Is it better to remove this e-mail settings problem as above, first or hope the upgrade to Tiger will do it for me? I prefer to get rid of my previous e-mail settings first before upgrading to Tiger.
Upgrading to Tiger will not do this automatically but besides the name of the account named folder within the Mail folder, are there any problems associated with this?

  • Is there a fix for Mail keeping 4 connections open for one.......?!

Is there a fix for Mail keeping 4 connections open for one email account setup as IMAP.......?!
Im just wondering whether this is possible because it means our company website falls over when the processes go over 25! There are a lot of emails.....
It is a massive pain and ideally we dont want to upgrade our hosting package if we can help it!
There must be a way round it?! Someone brainy know any tricks?!

    Ernie Stamper wrote:
Never have encountered this -- more info, please? What are 4 connections, exactly?
Very simple: Mail opens one connection for each IMAP mailbox on the account. Typically, this means Inbox, Sent Mail, Drafts, and Trash, but also includes Apple Mail To Do and Junk and any mailboxes/folders the user has created.
The problem is that Mail is keeping these connections open when it's done checking for new mail, even when *Use IDLE command if server supports it* is not enabled. With 4 email accounts on one server, this causes a "500 Internal Server Error" because there are too many processes running. As soon as I quit Mail, my web server resumes serving pages.

  • I can't find the preferences for Mail 2.1.3

When I choose Preferences from under the Mail menu, all I get is the Junk mail info. I need to edit and/or delete an account.

    Good news!
I had no idea what it was either until I went there and experimented a bunch!

  • Display preferences for Mail 5.0

After deleting an email from the inbox in mail 5.0, is it possible for the reading pane to show the 'no message selected' screen that you see when you click on a sub folder instead of displaying the adjacent message?  Currently, this causes me to have to mark the adjacent email as unread if I don't intend to action it at that time.

Not that I know of in full screen 3 column view-
You can drag the divider all the way to the right side,  so basically it is two columns.  Then each mail open individually with out opening the next when you delete.
Not a perfect work around, granted.
The other option would be to open in classic.

  • HT4864 How do I construct the preferences in mail for the incoming mail server?

I need help in setting up the preferences for mail, especially for the servers.  I followed setting up an account and
when I encountered the incoming mail server box, it didn't allow keying anything into it.  It is blocked; and with the outgoing server, the choices aren't
    clear.
Then when I try using mail,  it won't let me send or receive mail saying I can't leave the incoming box empty or that it can't contactr the outgoing server`so I should see iCloud preferences.

Not unless you know which file in the app sets the choices. I've been through it pretty thoroughly and can't find the one.

  • Help with Preference pane DNS settings for Mail

I have a mail (not Apple Mail) issue with my Entourage Mail. I keep getting
the following error message and I have verified the server settings in my
mail accounts are correct for ATT that uses pop.att.yahoo.com. I manage to
get mail most of the time but I still get the following error message:
    Error Description
    Error:
Entourage cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct.
    Explanation:
    Could not retrieve mail
    Error: -1370
My System Preferences/Network/Advanced/DNS point to my 2wire Gateway combo
modem/router. The router is set for Automatic DNS. I tried changing it to manual
and it did not works any better.
If I change the DNS setting in the preference pane in OS X, will it really use that
DMS address and bypass the router?
I played around with the namebench utility
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/32784/namebench and each time you
run it, namebench makes a better recommendation - saying something is faster
    than the previous recommendation.
I am lost on what I need to do correct the Network pane of my System Preferences.
Should it point to the router or to good DNS?
I do not think this is a Microsoft Entourage issue.
Have others seen this issue or is unique to my setup.

Going to sleep on and see how it works in the morning.
The problem is solved and I have checked the Yes button that my
question has been answered. The following is a copy of a posting
two days ago to the Microsoft Entourage group that should work
just as well for Mail users.
If you are tied of getting the following Entourage error
message -3170 over and over again, read on.
    Error:
Entourage cannot find the server. Verify the server information
entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS
settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct.
    Explanation:
    Could not retrieve mail
    Error –3170
Thanks to a tip from Diane Ross I have gone two days without
    getting the error message.
First, I know the Account Settings for my ATT DSL service
have been correct for some time and have not changed.
The short version of the fix that worked for was to open
the OS X 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) System Preferences/
Network/Advanced/DNS panel and add some better Domain
    Name Servers from my location.
The default (or before) OS X setting was:
    DNS Servers: Search Domains:
    192.168.1.254 gateway.2wire.com
Note both were dimmed. The server listed tells OS X to use
the ATT provided combo 2wire modem/router for my DSL service.
The change that seem to have worked for me was to leave the
Search Domain the same; however, I added some good servers that
bypass the 2wire gateway with its automatic DNS setting.
    DNS Servers: Search Domains:
    208.67.220.220 gateway.2wire.com
    208.67.220.222
    65.68.49.51
    192.168.1.254
I found the ‘good’ or better DNS Servers by making several runs
using the free Google utility called namebench 1.2
    <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/32784/namebench>
This utility takes some time and will make suggestions from your
location. If you add the namebench recommendation and run it
again it will find a better recommendation. I had to make several
runs to find the better DNS Servers for my location. The first or
primary is called OpenDNS, the second is a backup for the OpenDNS
and the third is SBC Global TX now owned by ATT and I live in
Texas. Note I ended with the default IP address.
FYI, I tied using the selected servers in the 2wire gateway in the
manual mode rather than the default automatic mode and it just
did not work right. Some pages would not open and others were
slow. For this reason I run the router in the automatic mode for
DNS and control things using the OS X Network preference pane.
The addition of preferred DNS Servers in my Preference seems
to have slowed down and hopefully stopped Entourage 2008
    version 12.2.4 -3170 error messages.

Mail, contacts, calendar settings will not open.  My email keeps searching for mail.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press the On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, to restart press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).

  • Mail keeps asking for password but won't go online

I am having multiple problems with passwords on my MB Pro -- FYI running 10.9.   Just fixed a problem with being unable to get into my admin account because I didn't know the password; got that fixed then had problems with keychains - still having.  Keeps asking if I want to go back to default keychain (don't get the keychain thing as it is).  Now both emails are offline and Mail keeps asking me to enter passwords but then it won't go online.  could use some advice or links to fixes

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.

    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select

  • Mail keeps asking me for my Verizon POP password!

    Hello,
The Mac Mail program keeps asking me for my Verizon POP outgoing password. It is so annoying because I have the password stored in the program's preferences for my Verizon.net account, and I know it is stored in the Keychain utility. I have never had this problem on my old mac which ran Mac OS 10.3.9, but I seem to have this problem several times EVERYDAY. I have my outgoing mail server as outgoing.verizon.net. I called Apple tech support about this, and they had me change my authentication settings from Authenticated POP (APOP) to Password. However, after saving that setting, the stupid program reverts back to APOP!!
What can I do so that Mac Mail will stop acting like it is suffering from alzhiemer's, and remember my password?

I suggest running Keychain First Aid on your login Keychain via Keychain Access.
The Authenticated POP (APOP) is for the incoming mail server, not for the outgoing or SMTP server.

  • Mail keeps asking for password - new bug???

Mail has just started asking for my password - every time I start up and click GET MAIL! This is a bug I think cause I go in and check it is a POP setting, I check I have my password typed in. And funnily it keeps deleting my password even though I type it and click save when exiting Preferences.
I click Remember Password in key chain but when I start Mail again it is not there!!!
This is really annoying. Just started - interestingly I updated last night my software update?

I Launched Mail Under the Help Menu I typed Keychain This is from Mail's Help Documentation:
If Mail keeps asking for your keychain password, your keychain may be set to lock
after a certain period of time, or when your computer goes to sleep.
To change the keychain lock settings:
Open Keychain Access, located in Applications/Utilities.
In the sidebar, click All Items in the Category section,
and then select your login keychain.
Choose Edit > “Change Settings for Keychain ‘login’.”
To reduce the number of requests for your keychain password,
deselect the "Lock after [number] minutes of inactivity" checkbox,
or increase the number of minutes. You can also deselect the
    “Lock when sleeping” checkbox.

  • ITunes 11.0.4 for Windows keeps restarting and removing my set-up and preferences

iTunes 11.0.4 for Windows keeps restarting and removing my set-up and preferences every time its shut down and re-opened, how can I stop this?
All of the music (etc) is still there but I need to agree to the terms and condition of the 'Software License Agreement for iTunes for Windows' every time I open iTunes.
Once opened there is no personal set-up, such as side menus and how the lists are set-up (e.g showing album images, music listed in ‘most played’ order, etc etc) I know how to re-do all of my settings, Its just getting very annoying now.
Anyone know how to stop this or at least why It is doing it?

I found why it defaults back to the wizard. I noticed in  C:/users/(User)/AppData/Roaming/Apple  Computer/iTunes/iTunesPerfs.xml file is deleted from this directory upon  exiting iTunes. When I manully restore this file itunes starts with my  correct settings. Why the .xml file being deleted I don't know. iTunes is deleting the file when you exit so I guess there is just a bug.

  • Mail Keeps Asking For Keychain Password - Possible Solution

    Hi
I am a Mac newbie and all was going well until I played around with the Keychain settings and then, despite putting everything on Keychain back to how it was, I kept getting requests from Mail to enter my password.
Having tried every other solution offered by the various help sites and web forums (this problem seems quite common), I finally went for the deleting the mail account solution that (fingers crossed) has now worked for over a day, so I am posting it here in case it is useful to someone else:
    -     First I deleted the two keychain password references to Mail that were in the Keychain Access list (POP and SMTP) and made sure Keychain settings       were all back to how they were originally.
    -     Then I archived all my mail and mail folders - was easy to do and then reload again later.
    -     Then I deleted my email account; rebooted; went back into mail and went through the process of setting up my account again.
    -     Reloaded my mail messages and folders and tidied things up to how they were.
    -     Let keychain set up the mail passwords again by sending and receiving a test message to myself.
Hey presto!  Everything now appears back to how it was, without those annoying requests for passwords for Mail.
I am pretty sure this problem arose due to me changing the keychain settings, even though I put everything back to how it was (or at least I think I did!) it's almost as though there is a bug that makes Mail think the settings have not been changed back to "normal" again.
Hope this help's someone (took me about half a day to fix this as all sorts of solutions are offered by the help sites and forums, but none fixed the problem until I went through the procedure above).

    Still, that was quite funny....!
Erm, I'm still having this problem along with several others that have gone unanswered on here about why Mac Mail decides to keep all my trash, junk, sent, but clears out the INBOX every 5 or 7 days. No server problems, No settings changed... For a computer I bought to make my life easier, its sure making me work exceedingly hard for it. I'm this close to going back to Windows. DON'T LET ME DO IT!!!!!!!!! Helllllp!!!!

  • Optimum server for mail apparently played havoc with my iMac mail app, kicking my Opt mail offline . Three hours on phone with both. Appears to be Optimum service issue. Had to restore all my mail preferences in Apple app to set that right. Working today

Last night, my Mac Mail app showed Optimum and gmail as offline and first I couldn't send any mail, then stopped receiving.  Could sign in at Optimum server, but then that stopped responding.  Was on the phone 4 hours, twice with Apple, twice with Optimum. Optimum maintained it was an Apple problem, but had me change my setup for mail in Mail App preferences on my Mac. Got it working and few mintues later out again. I called Apple again. We reset the preferences in mail app and agreed it was the Optimum Server causing problems.
This morning, I couldn't sign in to optimum webmail. Just testing it out, yet I could send mail from my mail apps, mobile and Mac. I didn't get mail that was sent to me last night but seems now it is working again and my preferences in Apple app, are as Apple set or reset them to work with Optimum.
    Anyone else have this problem.

Oh yes. Optimum ended by saying. Apple will have to create an App update to Mail to have things work right between them.  I don't think so. Optimum's server wouldn't let me sign in this morning at all...even though I mostly use app not the server.  Kept redirecting me to Sign-in page . Then an hour later, I could sign in with no problems.
Just be careful about having Optimum change too much over the phone in your Apple mail app preferences.  I know Apple and I made a few with ports..and password dropdown. Optimum told me to set it to NONE for password, and that worked for a few minutes, then stopped.  This is n Optimum issue , IMHO.
I trust Apple Express support more than I trust Optimum support.  The second person I spoke to at Optimum said these complaints about Macs and Optimum and Mac mail app have just been coming in this week. They are aware of it, but I see this isn't the first time this has happened.
Also, since Optimum is still a POP3 server, my e-mails that I delete keep coming back for a few days, on my mobile devices.

  • Mail keeps asking for password when I enter and try to send messages

When ever I enter 'mail' and then try to send messages it always ask for a password in both instances. I have changed the preferences and added the password and when I save the changes they don't appear as changed

OK. When you say that Mail doesn’t save the password, are you basing this solely on the fact that Mail keeps asking for it? Or is there something else that makes you believe Mail doesn’t save the password?
Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, try removing the password entry from the keychain and let Mail create it again the next time it asks for it.
