My adventures in FTP/Floppy installation...

First, let me say that I really don't pose any questions in the following commentary, but I make a few observations and offer a suggestion or two for the benefit of those who may follow in my footsteps, or for the higher powers that be who may read it.  Therefore, although my thread will be heavily content related to this particular forum, it might be better served in a beter place Mr. Moderator.  You be the judge.
Second, all the difficulties I lay out before you shortly, were in large part, already answered in prior posts and found with some persistent "search" digging.  I do stress persistent though...
Third, once you know what to avoid and look for with the current installer available, the FTP/Floppy install is really slick and I prefer it over the full blown ISO install.  I'm glad you guys made this option available.
Well, on with the show...
1. At first, I had some difficulty during the partitioning phase.  I was choosing "reiserfs" for all my partitions, but my 16MB "/boot" was giving me hell for the rest.  I kept getting the following error:
"reiserfs_create_journal: cannot create a journal of 8193 blocks w/18 offset on 3888 blocks."
The bottom line was, my partition was too small for reiserfs to write it's journal.  I easily bumped it up to 64MB and had no problem with that partition thereafter.  However, what did cause me problems later was going directly back to the partition entries and resizing them.  However, in doing so and going right back to see if it would work, a partition or two that had already passed would now fail, since it was already mounted from the prior succesful attempt.
Suggestion:  Maybe have the installer automatically umount all mounted partitions, except for the "ramdisk" and "tmpfs", unless you succesfully mount and create all of those fielsystems.  Of course, you can always umount them manually in another VC yourself.
2. I kept getting "could not dowload from (this or that) server" error messages.  See 1 and 3.  They were the causes for it.
3. The "Done" action bit me in the rear several times.  I kept getting errors like the following:
"could not extract gentoo-0.11.53-1/depends:
cannot resolve dependencies for "autoconf".
"mawk" is not in the package set."
Basically, pacman was not using my newly created partitions (with all that hunky real drive space), since it had not created them yet.  However, I could "exit" at any time.  Since I was tying to keep track of over 14 different partitions across 2 drives, while scrolling down to the bottom and keeping track of what I changed, it's easy to lose sight of a simple step like "Done" amidst 3-5 different reboots, (seemingly) hours of trial and error, and countless forum queries.  I know.  That's no excuse...but the time invested in determining the solution really added up.  Imagine someone trying out this distro for the first time and the opinions left behind.
Suggestion:  Much like other curses based installers, RedHat comes to mind, you do not have a dialog window with "Exit" or "Cancel" and some obscure "Done" item melded in with unrelated selection/action windows.  Instead, you either have to use the function keys to "apply" changes, or the linear "limitations" of their installer keeps you from progressing to the next, offering no "Exit" or "Cancel" dialog at all, maybe a "back" button at most.
Another alternative would keep the existing interface and add "check" boxes next to each action/selection item that has been succesfully completed ("[X]"), or left empty ("[ ]") if not.  Those would be filled in automatically by the installer, and the only dialog you would need to allow is "Exit".  If the user does "Exit" and all the check boxes are not filled, then do not even allow them to enter succesive menus thereafter.
Well, you get the hang of the installer after a while.  It would be nice if future Arch generations had a more "limited" installer which they didn't have to become too intimate with.  Overall, it's manageable as it is, and these are just minor "concerns".
I think I spent the better part of 2 hours just trying to figure out why I couldn't get past the next step.  It all stemmed from item 1 and snowballed thereafter.

Hello,
I am working for some while now  ... trying to install Arch onto a Thinkpad 240.
I'm trying to do the same with my old Thinkpad 240. It's a great little laptop, and its a shame to see it go to waste. I think Arch can revive it.
The 240 has only a pcmcia CD-Rom, which my experience of other distros tells me is grief itself to try to boot from.  I'm now trying to bypass it with the Arch floppy boot disks and a FTP installation. The LAN card needed for a net connection, though, is also pcmcia, so I expect, and get, a further challenge.
After loading 4 floppies (boot, root, pcmcia and ethernet), the installation suggests, for machines with pcmcia network cards, running command 'cardmgr'. But 'cardmgr' isn't loaded with the floppies.
Moreover, the card configuration database, usually stored I think in /etc/pcmcia/config, is absent, which I can't figure out, as I thought that and a load of card drivers was what the Arch pcmcia floppy would have  installed.
Anyhow, I download cardmgr and write it to a floppy, but I find can't access it. 'Mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy' fails, with message 'No such file or directory'. I can't understand that, as the 4 Arch floppies loaded fine with 'loaddisk /dev/fd0'.
Can anyone offer any help on these issues?

VSFTPD 3 uses a seccomp filter sandbox, which as far as I know is not available in RHEL. Why do want to install version 3.0.0?
For what it's worth, version 2 of vsftpd is part of the standard installation distribution. However, ftp is generally considered obsolete and has been replaced by SCP and SFTP build into SSH-2.

It's good you spoke up -- I wasn't sure if anybody out there actually used the floppies anymore.  Don't worry, we can still provide a floppy method, but it will be considered the "off-the-beaten-track" option, and may not be covered as well in the docs.  Right now the floppy- and CD-based installs are mostly identical, but in the future the CD install will change so the two will diverge.

  • NVIDIA Quatro K2000M Driver Installation

Whenever I tried to install an NVIDIA driver from the regular arch repos it would not work and fall back to the vesa drivers. So I decided to download the driver from the NVIDIA site and install it. Whenever I try to install it however I will get the message:
The header file '/usr/src/linux-3.11.1-1-ARCH/include/linux/kernel.h' does not exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source path '/usr/src/linux-3.11.1-1-ARCH' is incorrect.
Please make sure that you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured.
Now what I'm wondering is if the installer is wrong and if it isn't how/where do I get these source files?

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FA … ge_is_X.3F
    $ pkgfile /usr/src/linux-3.11.1-1-ARCH/include/linux/kernel.h
    core/linux-headers
    Do you have linux-headers installed?
Which package did you install from the repos - 'nvidia'?
I'm not sure if installing from nvidia's website will change anything, since this is what the package from the repo does: https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … ges/nvidia
    source+=("ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-${_arch}/${pkgver}/${_pkg}.run")
If grabs the package from nvidia's ftp and installs it. It should be the same .run file you can download manually from nvidia's website.

  • [solved]PCMCIA wired ethernet card issues

I have a Trendnet TE100-PCBUSR ethernet card plugged in to the PCMCIA socket on my dell laptop. I am trying to get it to connect through DHCP so that I can use pacman to install the programs I need, at the moment I only have the base packages. Google reveals to me that the ethernet card is a cardbus clone, and that it is supported by the tulip driver.
I installed arch by booting the cd and doing an ftp-based installation with the very same pcmcia ethernet card. Unfortunately after the installation I appear to not be connected to my network when my computer boots. To me, this says that I have simple configuration problems.
When I was running the installation, I got the card to work by doing these commands:
    modprobe yenta_socket
    modprobe tulip
the installer also advised that I run cardmgr, which told me there was no driver in /proc/devices, this warning didnt prevent the network from connecting to the ftp and downloading though. After running the modprobe commands I was able to establish a connection by using the menu in the installer.
My question is, how does the connection I made while running the installer translate into config files that can connect while booting? I am also wondering about that cardmgr error, is this something I should be worrying about?
I am looking forward to getting pacman working so that I can finaly have a linux that is bloat-free, containing only the stuff that I actually use. Even slackware handled configuring this card for me, so doing this by hand is new terriroty for me, when the system boots the card lights up like it did when I ran the modprobe commands, but I can't ping anything and pacman cannot download any packages.
You guys have already helped me alot at the IRC channel by helping with installing whenever I got stuck on some things. I imagine this is a simple issue that is documented somewhere, but I have not yet found this document and have been sitting on this problem for 2 days now. I would appreciate any clues you all could give me.

A little more info about my system, lshwd is detecting a built-in ethernet card that God decided to kill with a lighning bolt a couple years ago, the rest of the system still functions normally, my cable modem suffered the most from the strike and ended up getting replaced, but replacing an ethernet card built into this laptop is not possible because it is part of the main board, sigh.
I had a hell of a time transfering this data over, couldn't get the floppy to work so I installed pine and configured it to use my ISP email account, I royally messed up that config but strangely enough it still worked, the email came from [email protected], and I didnt have to login for it to work, which is lucky because I couldn't set up pine to do all that in the limited time I have with my machine.
Are you guys noticing a pattern yet? I can't configure very well, but I really hope to get better at it!
I also noticed that cardctl was telling me that my ethernet card is a cardbus fast ethernet, does that mean that I shouldnt be trying to use pcmcia-cs for this but use hotplug instead? lshwd also identified my ethernet card as something else, which I imagine is a card that my card is a clone of, since it appears to be working anyway.
I'm looking forward to your suggestions, any hints on configuring in general would be appreciated as well since I'm obviously having some bad luck with it I'll worry about floppy and email problems later.
PS: dhclient requires no parameters to connect, and I will have to give you my ifconfig info the next time I get a chance to use that computer.

  • Cannot connect to the network after fresh install

Hello everyone. So I followed the Beginner's Guide to the letter during setup. Everything was all peachy, including the network (since I used the FTP/HTTP ISO to install Arch Linux). My NIC got assigned an IP address from my router via DHCP. However, after the installation process was finished and I booted to the actual system, it seems that I cannot get an IP address from the router at all. When I try to run dhcpcd eth0, it always times out.
There have been a couple of posts about this in the past month, and I tried all the solutions that were mentioned there. None of them worked. I double-checked my /etc/rc.conf, /etc/dhcpcd.conf, and /etc/hosts files. They are correct as far as I can tell. No typos or anything like that. Heck, I even tried increasing dhcpcd's timeout to a full minute. Still no dice. This post seems to suggest that dhcpcd has a regression bug.
So... does anyone have any suggestions as to the next course of action I should take? I would appreciate any help.
EDIT: For what it's worth, I'm trying to install Arch Linux on a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. I'm not too sure about the exact model for the built-in NIC, but I suspect it is one of those built-in NICs from Intel.
    Last edited by Kirby54925 (2009-08-08 12:50:43)

No, I have not even installed any DE/WMs yet (how can I if the network doesn't even work?). Hell, X.org is not even set up yet. Keep in mind that my problem takes place IMMEDIATELY after I finished running the FTP/HTTP installer (so in the Beginner's Guide, I would be right at the beginning of Part II, which is configuring the new Arch system). The kernel version is 2.6.30.4. The ethernet card is a Broadcom 440x 10/100, I believe. I don't believe a driver is needed for that card due to kernel support (this card does indeed work with Ubuntu as well as the Arch livecd itself). And yes, I did read the relevant wikis, including the Beginner's Guide and the Network wiki.
So to summarize, the network does indeed work while I'm going through the initial stages of installation with the Arch livecd. Since I am using the FTP/HTTP installation CD, I have to download all of the packages I need for installing the base system. It is after that point when the base system is fully installed, allowing me to boot off the hard drive, when the network fails to get an IP address from the router.
Anyhow, thank you very much for the welcome and for your response! Hopefully we will be able to get to the bottom of this problem.
EDIT: This person and this other person seem to have the same problem I do. They, unfortunately, did not come up with a sufficient resolution to the problem. I hope this helps in making the issue clear.

    Hi Saransurendran,
A common cause of the issue you describe is that not all files from the WAAS SRE ZIP archive are available in the same folder on your FTP server, or permissions are not good for all files.
There should be 6 files on your FTP server in total, all in the same folder:
    •waas-accelerator-4.4.3c.9-k9.bin
    •waas-accelerator-4.4.3c.9-k9.bin.install.sre
    •waas-accelerator-4.4.3c.9-k9.bin.install.sre.header
    •waas-accelerator-4.4.3c.9-k9.bin.installer
    •waas-accelerator-4.4.3c.9-k9.bin.key
    •waas-accelerator-4.4.3c.9-k9.bin.srebootloader
If any of these files should be missing or not accessible on the FTP server, installation will fail.
Please ensure you have all these files available and accessible on your FTP server and retry.
Please also check the following documents for further information on installing WAAS on SRE:

  • Installion problems on multi distro machine [solved]

Started with 0.7.2 i686, but had problems with that so I was advised to try 0.8. Just downloaded base-0.8-beta1-20070122-i686.iso image. Mdsum5 and burn verify no problem. However, I'm having lots of bother getting it installed on a machine containing other distros. So I tried installing on VMWare and had no problems whatsoever with either with the iso image or the burnt CD.
I had to use ide-legacy to boot the real machine. As the disk was already prepared I went straight to option 3. Set Filesystem Mountpoints and set the swap (overwrite), / (ext3/overwrite) and boot (ext2/no overwrite) partitions. Then on selecting all base packages I get I get error
    checking package integrity...error: archive kernel-headers-2.6.19
    Package installation failed
Continued with 4. configure system anyway and a get a load of mount point errors and the chroot fails. When I edit (vim) the list of configuration files, they're all empty and if I try to add anything I get error E212: Can't open file for writing. Obviously I can't set the password either.
So I thought I'd try the ftp base installl. The network set up was fine. Instead of the above package integrity error, I get
error: the following file conflicts were found :
    grub: /mnt/boot/grub/menu.lst: exists in filesystem
errors occured, no packages were upgraded
    Package installation failed
Also I get a load of errors on trying to install the kernel, but at least there was no package corruption.
I tried both methods a number of times. With the CD install I sometimes get more CD errors. With ftp base install I get exactly the same problems. I also tried preparing the disk within the install using cfdisk. However, when I deleted /dev/hda10 and created a new one, cdfisk wanted to rename most of the other partitions, so i didn't go ahead with that. I've seen this problem with cfdisk before.
I know I could move the virtual machine to the real machine, but I rather not have the hassle. Anyone got some workarounds?

    Thanks for your reply mutlu_inek.
mutlu_inek wrote:What do you mean by "overwrite"? Formatting?
Yes the installer gives the option to format or not, selected partitions during the installation. The app uses the terms overwrite/no overwrite.
mutlu_inek wrote:Maybe your designated /boot partition is corrupted (or not actually ext2)? Maybe you should try formatting it.
The /boot partition was ext2 and I wasn't aware of any corruption. The fsck check on booting was fine and no other distro was having problems. However, removing the kernels and config files or reformatting the /boot partition seemed like good option that I hadn't yet tried. I backed up the partition and allowed the installer to format/overwrite it during the install. This fixed all the problems.
mutlu_inek wrote:The partition naming/numbering sheme is ordered. If you delete a partition and then re-create it, it will have the same name. If you just delete it, names of partitions with higher numbers will change. That is not cfdisk specific, not even Linux-specific.
My disk has 10 partitions. Within cfdisk I deleted /dev/hda10 created and recreated it. However, rather than getting a new /dev/hda10 the partition was designated /dev/hda7 with the original 7, 8 and 9 all reassigned. I'd say this was a bug.

  • Golden Gate and Streams

    Oracle 11.1.0.7:
Before I ask my simple question. Is there a place I can get detailed documentation of Golden Gate? I got some documentation but that is very high level. I am looking for some document or tutorial like the ones Oracle has on tahiti.oracle.com.
We are currently using streams and personally worked on it. I see following issues:
    1. When some errors occur in dba_apply_error it's really slow to re-execute them. Recovery is very slow
    2. Streaming the LOBs over of just 512 bytes makes the CCA very slow
    3. Manageability of scripts, configuration etc. is a headache
    4. Come accross streams bugs all the time
From what I have read about golden gate is that is super fast and better than streams. I haven't read about it so I don't have complete comparision. Could someone with similar experience provide the insight.
Also, if someone can please help me get right detailed documents would be really great.

    Hi,
Think the goldengate documentation provide adequate help to install and configure oracle goldengate process. I can put down a sample configuration for you to get started.
Installing GoldenGate and configuring a extract replicat process.
First FTP the installation zip in binary mode from the PC to the installation directory on machine where Oracle GoldenGate suppose to be installed.
Use gzip to decompress the file.
    gzip –d <file_name>.gz
    Extract the files
Use tar to extract the files. All GoldenGate files will be placed in the current subdirectory.
    tar –xvf <file_name>.tar
    Create folders
Create the required sub-directories in the installation directory by using
    Shell> cd <install location>
    Shell> ggsci
    GGSCI> create subdirs
    GGSCI> exit
    Oracle-specific installation steps
The below steps are only required when GoldenGate will be capturing data from the server. Therefore it is only needed when you are installing GoldenGatef or Oracle as your <source> environment.
You need to turn on supplemental logging at the database level. This command requires the ALTER DATABASE permissions.
    Shell> sqlplus <login>/<password>
    SQL> alter database add supplemental log data;
Now Switch to the next redo log file.
    SQL> alter system switch logfile;
    SQL> exit
Then now configure manager parameter file.
    GGSCI> EDIT PARAMS MGR
    •     Use the editor to assign a port
    --GoldenGate Manager parameter file
    PORT <port>
    example: PORT 7840
    •     To Start the Manager, issue following command
    GGSCI> START MGR
    •     To Verify that the Manager has started, issue the following command
    GGSCI> INFO MGR
    Now Configure Supplemental logging.
By default, if not supplimentory logging enabled , only the change vectors will be logged in redo logs So inorder to get the columns required for constructing the image by replicat in target we require atleast minimum supplimentory logging enabled in database level and table level logging required for proper functioning of Oracle Goldengate Software.
Using GGSCI, log in to the database on the <source> and turn on supplemental logging for the the tables configured for replication
    Shell> ggsci
    GGSCI> DBLOGIN USERID <login>
    GGSCI> ADD TRANDATA <owner/schema>.<table-name>
Do this for all the tables.
    Configure change capture
    1. Add the Extract group
Execute the following command on the <source> system to add an Extract group
GGSCI> ADD EXTRACT <extract-name>, TRANLOG, BEGIN NOW
    Verify the results:
    GGSCI> INFO EXTRACT <extract-name>
    Create the Extract parameter file
Execute the following commands on the <source> system.
    GGSCI> EDIT PARAM <extract-name>
    EXTRACT <extract-name>
    USERID <login>, PASSWORD <password>
    RMTHOST <target>, MGRPORT <port>
    RMTTRAIL ./dirdat/<trail id>
    TABLE <owner/schema>.<table-name>
    TABLE <owner/schema>.<table-name>
    for example
    extract testext
    userid ggs password ggs
    rmthost 172.25.25.177
    rmttrail ./dirdat/tr
    table scott.mytable;
    table scott.yourtable;
    Define the GoldenGate trail
Execute the following command on the <source> to add the trail that will store the changes on the <target>.
    GGSCI> ADD RMTTRAIL ./dirdat/<trail id>, EXTRACT <extract-name>
    Verify the results:
    GGSCI> INFO RMTTRAIL *
    Start the capture process
    GGSCI> START EXTRACT <extract-name>
    Configure Change Delivery or replicat
we have to do the following
    •     Set up the checkpoint table on the target system.(this is optional)
    •     Create a named group that includes the Replicat process and the checkpoint tables.
    •     Configure the Replicat group by adding parameters.
    •     Start the Replicat group.
Now we will check how to set up the checkpoint table (this is a optional settings)
Create a GLOBALS file on the target system
Execute the following commands on the <target> system.
Create and edit the GLOBALS parameter file to add the checkpoint table.
    Shell> cd <install location>
    Shell> ggsci
    GGSCI> EDIT PARAMS ./GLOBALS
    In the text editor, type:
    CHECKPOINTTABLE <owner/schema>.ggschkpt
    •     Record the checkpoint table owner and name, then save and close the file.
Please Note: You could name the table anything you want
    •     Verify that the GLOBALS file was created in the root GoldenGate directory, and remove any file extension that was added.
    Activate the GLOBALS parameters
For the GLOBALS configuration to take effect, you must exit the session in which
the changes were made. Execute the following command to exit GGSCI.
    GGSCI> EXIT
    Add a Replicat checkpoint table
On the <target> system, execute the following commands in GGSCI:
    Shell> cd <install location>
    Shell> ggsci
    GGSCI> DBLOGIN USERID <login>, PASSWORD <password>
    GGSCI> ADD CHECKPOINTTABLE
    Configure Change Delivery
    Add the Replicat group
Execute the following command on the <target> system to add a delivery group
    named <replicat-name>
    GGSCI> ADD REPLICAT <replicat-name>, EXTTRAIL ./dirdat/<trail id>
Note: Refer to your Extract set up for the correct two-character <trail id>.
    Create Replicat parameter file
Execute the following commands on the <target> system to bring up the parameter
    file in the editor.
    GGSCI> EDIT PARAM <replicat-name>
    -Type in the following parameters
    REPLICAT <replicat-name>
    USERID <login>, PASSWORD <password>
    HANDLECOLLISIONS
    ASSUMETARGETDEFS
    DISCARDFILE ./dirrpt/RORA<unique id>.DSC, PURGE
    MAP <owner/schema>.<source table-name>, TARGET <owner/schema>.<target table-name>;
    Start the Replicat process
    GGSCI> START REPLICAT <replicat-name>
    Verify the results:
    GGSCI> INFO REPLICAT <replicat-name>
The above i scrapped is a basic extract-replication process which you can scale up once you get accustomed with this beautiful product.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Newbie Question about InterConnect

    1. We need to exchange data via ftp and in CSV format. It seems that FTP Adapter only workds with XML. Any suggestion on CSV files over ftp?
    2. Where can I find document about iStudio SDK and Adapter SDK?
I am quite new to InterConnect, I appriciate for your help.

You should also review the configuration section of the FTP adapter installation guide. There is a section on the adapter.ini file which explains what changes you need to make in order to use the adapter in either file or ftp mode.
In particular, there are 2 parameters called ota.recieve.endpoint and ota.send.endpoint which need to be configured to tell the adapter whether it is to function as a file or an ftp adapter. These settings are mutually exclusive; the adapter can only function in one mode or the other.

  • Any 'raw' BIOS images available for download?

Hi all, I have a little problem. I have an old Toshiba Tecra M2, which hums along nicely with the old 1.10 BIOS. I want to update the BIOS to the newest 1.60 version. As I don't have a working CD drive, I can't boot the BIOS updater CD image (the tm20v160.exe updater allows for floppy installation, CD installation and in-Windows installation). Because of my failed CD drive, I also can't install Windows. In fact, I'm currently running Linux that I installed from a network PXE server.
So I'm stuck without Windows or any of the BIOS updater facilities (neither TM2_BIOS_W160.exe, nor the tm20v160.exe which gives the choice of CD, floppy, and in-Windows updating).
There is, however, a popular, well-working Linux utility called 'flashrom'. I can easily update the BIOS like this...
    flashrom -w rawbiosimage.bin
My dilemma is, though, that I can't seem to find a 'raw' BIOS image to use with 'flashrom'. I have also tried poking around in the EXE files to see if I can extract a BIOS image, to no avail.
So, my question is, do you know where I can find a 'raw' BIOS image for this Tecra M2, instead of the Windows BIOS updating utilities? If I can have the image, I can update the BIOS in Linux perfectly easily. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like the BIOS image is packed away pretty well in there.
But, just as a thought, you could get a USB floppy drive for a few bucks.

Plenty of others out there, I just picked one at random.

  • Reinstalling PageMaker

My question may already be in the system - I don't know if it was received.
We own PM5.0 diskettes and PM6.5 upgrade cd's (see, not pirated)
We had PM 6.5 up and running on an Virtual XP Window on my W7.0 machine but the Virtual XP window locked up.
So now I am trying to reload PM on an older XP laptop but the 5.0 floppy installation portion never "completes" (stops at 66% of the personization)
NO matter how I try it, the same results.
Is there an anti-pirate "feature" that limits the times I can install this software , then it refuses to install?
If true, is there a work-around since this is legit?

I don’t know and PM 6.5 is more than 15 years old.
There’s no telling whether you disks are any good at this point.
Honestly, I think you need to give this up and move to a more modern application. Scribus is free and open source. Serif Page Plus is about $99.
Either would be far better than trying to use this dinosaur of a program.

  • Fluxbox [solved]

So far, I have installed the base packages of arch from ftp, changed the hostname, changed eth0 to dhcp, pacman -Sy xorg, pacman -Sy hwd, hwd -xa, pacman -Sy fluxbox, and updated hostname in /etc/hosts. at this point, startfluxbox gives the error...
failed to set locale, reverting to "c"
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::string'
    /root/.fluxbox/startup: line 12: 1944 aborted              /usr/bin/sbsetroot -solid black
warning: failed to set locale, reverting to "C"
    error: couldn't connect to XServer
Anyone know where I went wrong?

okay - i started over and used the following steps...
    1. install arch off 0.7.1 ftp base installation (all packages in base), changing timezone, hostname, and eth0 (to dhcp) in /etc/rc.conf and localhost in /etc/hosts.
    2. reboot
    3. passwd
    4. pacman -Sy xorg
    5. pacman -Sy hwd
    6. hwd -xa
    7. pacman -Sy fluxbox
    8. add "exec startfluxbox" to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
    9. adduser tony
    10. log in as tony
    11. startx
at this point, i see the screen resolution change to 1024x768 for a second and go black - it looks like its going to work but then i get kicked back into bash and see several messages. among these is a "no matching section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:0) found /home/tony/.xinitrc: line 9: exec: wmaker: not found"

  • P35 Platinum - regular hangups (fixed)

    Happy New Year to all!
    I've just got my New Year's present(s) ... a P35 Platinum and Intel Core2Quad Q6600 boxed (G0 Stepping)!
I'm using following items from my old system:
    Rambo 2GB DDR2 800 MHz
    MSI 8800GTX 768 MB PCI-Express
36 GB WD Raptor SATA HDD (10,000 RPM)
250 GB Maxtor SATA HDD (7,200 RPM) (x2)
    LG DVD-Writer IDE
    Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS
    Cambridge SoundWorks GigaWorks 7.1
    Gigabyte 3D Aurora Housing
Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2)
    DirectX 9.0c
Well, I started facing problems the moment I tried installing Windows XP. I connected just the WD Raptor 36GB SATA to the motherboard and set the mode to AHCI. Intel's AHCI BIOS would detect the HDD correctly at POST. But F6 floppy installation failed to find a HDD. I tried with other SATA HDDs but still in vain. So, I set the SATA mode to legacy and eventually formatted the HDD and installed Windows XP (thought I would definitely like to use the SATA HDD in AHCI mode). Windows installation completed successfully.
The problem now is that the system freezes when running any game. Every single game that I run gets stuck. Some games run for about 5-10 mins. before freezing but most hang up within a minute. Except for 3DMark 2001 SE (got a score of 43,998 Marks), all others freeze as well. I think that something might be overheating, though all fans seem to be operating at normal RPMs. Also, playing videos in YouTube sometimes produces a blue screen / restart. This has happened at least 4 times since yesterday.
Any ideas as to where to start troubleshooting from? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Regards,
    Kamran

    Yup, did that as well.

  • Oracle Linux 6 u3 Installation via FTP

There is a need to install OS (Oracle Linux 6.3) via FTP. The installation process started fine, but after I'd finished with partitions layout and hit "next" on the window displaying "boot loader operating system list", error appeared.
the error: "Unable to read package metadata from repository. This maybe due to missing repodata directory. Cannot retrieve repository metadata(repomd.xml) for repository".
Ftp shared folder is OS iso file itself.

What you are trying to accomplish is creating a local mirror of the software distribution. If you can't download from a mirror and you have the install DVD, copy the complete content and structure to a locally hosted HTTP or FTP directory.
As already mentioned, you need to specify the path to the root of the installation from where you can browse the "repodata" and "server" directory.
You can see what the installation is looking for by opening the repodata directory and analyzing "repomod.xml". This will show you the relative path and filename including the primary.sqlite.bz2 file.
Make sure all your files and directories in the installation root have world read and execute privileges (chmod -R 755 /install dir) and make sure your ftp server is setup accordingly providing the right FTP_HOME and permissions. Also, what is your FTP server, does it support Unix filenames or translate them?
You can probably try another machine use FTP to connect to the installation source and see if you can navigate inside the directories and get the files.
