My drive just spits the discs back out.

I have a Matshita DVD-R drive that came installed on my MacBook. It's never had any problems, but today it decided not to read any audio CDs that I put in. I'll put a CD in, I'll hear the drive start to "spin up" a couple times, and then it spits the disc back out. No error message, nothing. It won't even show up in Finder or iTunes. I tried this with several audio CDs and it's treating them all the same.
Any thoughts on what might cause this kind of blind refusal to accept CDs - and what can I do to fix it? I tried restarting, but that's about it...Any help is much appreciated!

hi, Is it all disks? Are the disks your using of the same brand? You could try and SMC Reset (System Management Control)
To do this, Simply shut down the iMac and remove every cable connected including the power cord from the back. Leave for 15 seconds and then put the power back in. Power on and test.
Its likely that this is a system wide issue, As in it happens in every user account. But if you do have 5 mins spare you could always create a new user account and test this to confirm

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

  • When i try to burn a playlist to a cd it spits the cd back out

im trying to burn a playlist but the cd keeps coming back out as if its not blank. these are brand new cds. what is going on

Does iTunes give any error message? Is the playlist longer than 60-70 minutes?

  • I have a music album i want to play but the cd play make weird noises and spits the cd back out

the cd is the section quartet all access, how can i get it to play the cd, every time i try it sounds like the cd player going to break or something

You need to do systematicc testing to isolate the issue.  Is it mechanical sounds from the drive, or sounds from the speaker?  Does this happen with other CDs?  If just this particular CD it could be a bad CD, perhaps unbalanced (do not attach stickers to CDs).

  • What to do about my drive continuously shooting my cds back out?

My drive was working just fine a few minutes ago until I put my Sims game in and it asked to download its updates. As soon as it began to download, it stalled. I ejected the cd, shut it down, waited a few minutes, started it back up and put in the game cd. It spit it right back out. Tried this about 4 times, so I decided to try another cd in there to see if it would do the same thing. Sure enough it did! I even tried a third cd and still the same spitting result. What could have possibly happened to my drive when it was just working?

When migrating from time machine to my new hard drive, it migrates the first back-up I made several years ago. How can I migrate the latest back-up ? I need time machine to migrate the latest back-up. Should I delete the older back-ups ?

As noondaywitch says, it should use the latest backup.
Where are your backups (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?
It sounds like there are two separate sets, and you're not connected to the right set.

  • I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things

I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things.  And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad.  Here's the info on my IMac:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac6,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          3 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          IM61.0093.B07
      SMC Version (system):          1.10f2

I need to erase my hard drive and start anew
Why do you feel you need to do this? That is such a 'Windows thing' to do!
And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad
Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty.

  • I updated iPhoto and now can not burn a cd on iPhoto.  I am getting error message: The burn to the SuperDrive drive failed. The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry.

The burn to the SuperDrive drive failed. The disc drive didn’t respond properly and can’t recover or retry.
I have tried to do a SMC Reset and PRAM reset and it still will not work.  Before the update I was burning pics onto the same dics with no problem.
Any suggestions on what to do?
    Thanks!

  • Idvd spitting discs back out immediately

maxell dvd-r 4.7gb 16x write speed. ive checked the system profiler and my burner accepts dvd-r. the project is smaller than 4.7 gb.
any idea what gives? this is the first time using idvd and the first time burning a dvd on this computer. is it the disc? is it me? is it my drive?
    please help
    thank you.

    The specs for a mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro Says: Maximum write: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R; 4x DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RW
Media can say different things - for example, some Maxell DVD-R disc I have say 'Up to 8x' so I assume they can safely be used with slower burn speed drives. On the other hand, I once made a mistake and bought some CD-RW media that said '10x' (and in small print I didn't notice 'Write from 4x up to 10x'). This has made me very cautious when purchasing media.
I assumed (possibly incorrectly) that the "x8" on these discs references the fastest speed it can burn and would be compatible with my x4 drive.
I honestly don't know for sure. I guess I'd feel comfortable purchasing them for use at 4x.

  • I can't burn cds and it just spits the cds out?

I've tried burning playlists with itunes. I have the latest itunes update, so that's not the problem. I have a macbook that is from 2007. Here's what happens:
I choose a playlist, file, burn playlist to disc, it asks me to insert a blank disc, i put it in, it doesn't sense it, and then my computer makes weird noises before spitting out the cd with no explanation. Sometimes it appears to be burning ( the turning wheel shows up on the playlist name on the left side bar) but the cd isn't even in anymore. Please help!

On top LH of screen, select Apple menu> About this mac > More Info > System Report.
You will see a heading called Disk Burning, and in thw window opposite a status. What does it say?
At this stage you can insert a blank disk and it will report burn speeds available, and if not, report the fault.
    Good Luck

  • I dropped my iphone 5c yesterday and when I picked it up, I noticed the screen popped out in the left corner, so I made an appointment with apple for this Saturday and I wanted to know if they're going to charge me for just popping the screen back in

By the way, the phone works perfect, there's no scratches or cracks in the screen.  Everything works perfectly.

Accidental damage is not covered under the warranty but if possible to reset the screen without causing additional damage, the Apple Store should do this without charging for it.

  • HT3275 My "i" message reads that the disc ran out of space.

I have a 500Gb WD external disk, which the Computor says is full ( only 20Gb remaining).
My question is why does Time machine not delete old backups to make space for new ones?
It's not serious at the moment, just annoying and I would like to fix it.
It also says that my full backup is 112Gb.
    Chris Edwards

If you upgraded the computer from one OS to another, TM cannot correctly delete the old backups. So it gets stuck.. there are other issues that cause the problem as well.. although the idea of deleting old backups is supposed to work it often doesn't.
If you want to keep the existing backups.. then buy a new drive and start over. Or if it is really just a backup.. erase it and start afresh.. a new clean backup is well worth it after a lot of incrementals get built up.
