I have an express that i believe is A1084

Unfortunately, Apple dropped all support of the older.....8+ years....model A1084 and A1088 AirPort Express versions in Mavericks.
If you have a Mac running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or a PC using a 5.x version of AirPort Utility, the Express can be administered that way.

A few things to check are:
Make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. The normal Windows format of NTFS will not work.
The USB port at the AirPort Exteme is under powered. You almost always need to use a powered USB hub with a drive at this port, even if the drive has its own power supply.

Assuming that your cable modem has Gigabit Ethernet ports (possible, but it probably does not) Cat 5e or Cct 6 would do the job that you need.
If the cable modem is using a 10/100 Mbps port, then Cat5 will be OK.

Airport Extreme doesn't see ethernet ADSL router

I'm having a problem trying to connect my new Airport Extreme base station to a one port ethernet conexant adsl router. It simply doesn't see that the router exists.
The way I have it setup at the moment is the router distributes an IP address to the airport and the airport distrubutes IP addresses to wireless devices. At least that's what's supposed to happen.
I have an Airport Express connected to the router and that works fine. Connects no problem on its default settings. The Airport Extreme however doesn't connect with its default settings.
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? Is it possible the Airport Extreme just doesn't work? I've connected the Airport Extreme to my laptop via the WAN port to set it up and that worked Ok so as far as I can tell the WAN port works fine as does connecting wirelessly. The two just don't talk to each other.

Try the following ...
Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the ADSL modem, AEBSn, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the ADSL modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the ADSL modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the ADSL modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the computer(s)

Macbook Pro doesn't see Airport Express

I've been struggling with connection to my Airport Express.
My Macbook Pro (OS X 10.6.7 + all the latest updates) doesn't recognize it anymore. Occasionally, my wireless network was briefly visible to the Mac, but connecting to it only led to a time out. My Windows laptop from work did not have issues connecting, and neither did my iPhone...
I've done a reset of the AE, which did not help (my Windows laptop now shows the Apple Network XXXXX that is supposed to appear). However, the Airport Utility that is supposed to help me reinstall the thing from my Mac will not recognize it either...
Anyone any suggestions on where to go from here?

I am having the same problem. Right now i am sharing the wireless connection through the iPhone because my MBP2011 won't even see the SSID broadcasted by the airport express.
I hace tried emptying the keychain, emptying the list of known networks but nothing helps. It had the same kind of episode last week but after a lot of rebooting and editing of the AE over ethernet cable it started working again.
Tonight I came home from work, started the MBP and it wouldn't see the network. It has popped up once but clicking on it only resulted in a timeout error message.
Any help would be much appreciated! The AE is only a month old..

Airport Extreme doesn't see my USB disk

Hello,
i have changed the usb disk (full) that i connected to my airport extreme. I replace it by a new one (MEM UP, 2 To), formatted in mac os extended.
This new disk is mounted by the Mac but when i connected it on the Airport, the Airport doesn't see it : "no disk detected".
There isn't hub, it is connected directly.
Have you got an idea ?

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered....and your new hard drive may require a bit more current than the old one.
It is always a good idea to use a powered USB hub with the AirPort Extreme whenever you are using a hard drive....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
A powered USB hub may not solve your issue, but there is also a chance that it will. Might be worth a try.

Airport extreme doesn't recognize airport express remotes

Airport utility doesn't recognize airport express remotes in my network even though they appear to be working. Any ideas how to fix this?

You don't need to download drivers to the Airport Extreme Base Station.
However, you may have to download and install a printer driver on your Mac - if Epson's web site has a newer version than the one built into OS X (which is version 3.09).
You could also try using the alternate "Stylus Photo R340 - Gutenprint" driver built into MacOS 10.5.

Airport Utility doesn't see Airport Express

I have an Airport Express (wireless G) which is a couple years old. I am staying at my sisters for a couple months while going to school and brought it with me so I could get a wireless signal in my room since her router doesn't have wireless. I tried using the Airport Utility to scan for the Airport Express but it never finds it. Can I use this utility or do I need something else for this older Airport? If it is supposed to work; what might I be missing?

I unplugged it from the power held down the reset button and plugged it back in continuing to hold down the reset. I think you have to hold it down for nearly 10 seconds until the light flashes green 4 times and then release the button. Then try scanning for it again. It still took a little longer than I expected for it to find it after that but once it did I have not had any more problems.
At least with it; my sister is on windows and that is another story!

Airport Extreme doesn't see cable modem

A new Airport Extreme refuses to see an Optimum Online cable modem. As for troubleshooting, I've seen the new AE working at an Apple authorized store, bought a brand new ethernet cable, but still only get a blinking yellow light. I can plug my G5 directly into the modem with no problems. Any thoughts?

I had a similar problem once. Turned out Verizon (the ISP) had their DHCP server bind to the MAC address of the first machine connected to it and wouldn't issue a new IP address to another machine (MAC) address, unless you either:
1) let it time out like 45 mins!
2) you spoofed the MAC address of the old device on the new device. (Can't do this on the AEBS, unfortunately.)
3) you connected the old machine and (rather than just disconnect it after it got an address from the DHCP server), you actively released the DHCP address.
Until I found out this vital DHCP server behavior info (after waiting an hour on hold with tech support and then working through level 1 support's noob scripts), I too was playing around with resetting the modem, etc., etc. The problem however was the ISP's DHCP server 'security'.

Need help connecting to a shared drive on airport extreme

Connected to an airport extreme with a macbook and OS 10.5.8...can't seem to find where to see the USB connected to the back of the airport...any idea?

I am assuming that your drive is correctly formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT 32. If it's formatted as Windows NFTS, the drive will not appear.
You'll also usually need to use a powered USB hub, even if your drive has it's own power supply because the available power at the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is quite low.
Open the Finder and look for your AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading on the the left side of the window.
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon and a folder representing your drive will appear in the right hand side of the window.
Double click the folder to mount the drive on your desktop.

Airport Extreme doesn't see wireless router

I set up a wireless router for my G5 iMac and have turned airport on. the default SSID is belkin54g which my PC laptop sees and connects to just fine. The strange thing is, on the iMac, it showed up in the list of available networks. At first I got all bars, then it quickly dropped to one and then it completely dropped connection with the router when it was sitting on the same desk. If I create a computer to computer network I get all bars filled but it doesn't connect to the internet. Seems like I'm missing a setting on the iMac since the PC has no trouble. The model is a Belkin 54g 4 port wireless router.
BTW: This is on 10.4.2 and the latest airport update.

To My knowledge, The airport utility only sees Apple airports. So seeing your 2wire via that app I do not believe works. The program I like is iStumbler. I see all kinds of things in my neighborhood.
Anyway, I claim Chipset conflict. Back what may be the security down. OR turn it off and work your way up to find what level is needed. After no security, try not broadcasting SSID, after that tweak it until you don't see it and then back off to the one that works. Every one says wireless is wireless. Even in my work place, we cannot get PC's and Mac at the same level on of security on the same access points.
Bottom line, start fresh, tweak till it works. Because at the apple store, the chipsets are the same, or meant to work well. Why you may ask.... They want you to buy and Apple extreme with all the features.

WiFi Router doesn't see Airport Express; Admin Utility does; No music :-(

I brought in the Geeks on Call service after struggling for a long time to setup the WiFi Router, AX, etc. The Airport Express streamed music to my stereo for one day, before my computer restarted. Now I've lost connectivity. Here's the current details:
1) WiFi router's "Connected Devices" list does not show the AX; [Router is Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router (WPN824)]
2) Apple's Airport Admin Utility does show the AX (a.k.a. "Living-Room")
3) AX light is green, saying its connected to the network
4) iTunes speaker chooser only shows "My Computer"
Now for the bad news about what I tried that may have made things worse. Previously, the "Connected Devices" was showing the AX, but the Admin Utility was not showing it. The IP addresses of my Dell desktop & the AX were very close & I recalled the Geek saying it was a problem if they were too similar. So, I manually changed the 2nd to last # of the AX’s IP from 0 to 1. (i.e. from xxx.xx.0.x to xxx.xx.1.x) Now, I can’t login to the AX to change it back and the situation is as described above. (Its not accepting the password when I login thru the Admin Utility. I didn’t change the password from “public”.) [When I made this change, the AX started showing up in the Admin Utility and stopped showing on the WiFi’s “Connected Devices.” Previously, I had to manually enter the IP address in the Admin Utility to make it see it.]
I’ve tried: unplugging the AX; restarting iTunes; other “standard” passwords to login to the AX; waving my hands over it and making strange noises that scare my dog.
I admit it: This is an example of thinking I knew just enough to fix something, but ya end up worse off.

Dell desktop Windows XP Router is Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router (WPN824)

Excellent. I'm all squared away. It works.
For the record, the steps were:
* Connect AX to WiFi Router with Ethernet Cable;
* Reset the AX with paperclip;
* Select Factory Fresh Profile
* Follow the steps in link above to "Join an existing Network..." including:
* In Network Name, enter name of my wifi net, as set in router setup
* Enter WEP password (even though your password may be all #s, I needed to select HEX)
* Select Update to send settings to AX;
* Once AX restarted and light is green (connected), unplug ethernet cable (should stay connected & green);
* Check iTunes and ensure it shows up in the speaker chooser;
* Unplug & move to electrical outlet near stereo and connect;
* It works...

Windows 7 - iTunes doesn't see AirPort Express but AirPort Utility does..

iTunes 10.1.1.4 running on Windows 7 can not detect my AirPort Express with 7.5.2 firmware. My iPod Touch running on the same wireless router detects and will play music through the AirPort Express.
iTunes preferences are set to detect remotes (iPod Remote works to control iTunes) and the AirPort Express. Also verified that the Windows 7 firewall is set to all Bonjour to pass all UDP ports on home networks.

ITunes (and Airfoil) can see Airport Express but can't connect in Windows XP (error -15000) - firewall problems?

I am using Windows XP Professional 2002 w/ SP3 on a Dell Latitude E4300 laptop wirelessly connecting to my Airport Express 802.11n (firmware 7.5.2).
I can see my Airport Express in iTunes 10.4.1 and can select it via the Airplay button. iTunes even detects whether or not a speaker is connected to the Airport Express. But when iTunes tries to connect, it comes back after a while saying "An error occurred while connecting to the Airplay device xxx. An unknown error occurred (error -15000)."
A similar problem happens with Airfoil from Rogue Amoeba that I use to stream music from other apps such as VideoLAN to Airport Express on the same laptop. I can see that my Airport Express is available but when Airfoil tries to connect, it comes back saying "It appears that a firewall on this computer is preventing Airfoil from connecting to xxx Airport Express. Please check your firewall settings and try again."
I've set both Airplay and iTunes as exception programs in my Windows Firewall setting, and even added TCP ports 5000 to 5005 and UDP ports 6000 to 6005 to the exceptions as recommended by Airfoil. I've also disabled Symantec Endpoint Protection that Ihave installed. The only thing I can't disable is McAfee Endpoint Encryption, since I also use the laptop at work and I don't have permission to disableMcAfee. I use this laptop to connect wirelessly with other devices such as HP wireless printers, NAS drives and other laptops on my home network and have never had any issues, so i think that this issue is specific to the Airplay software being blocked by some firewall (I am assuming Airfoil also uses Airplay).
I've tried this on different wireless networks and I have the same issue with Windows XP on my Dell Latitude E4300. I've also set up the network with no security, but the problem doesn't go away.
I also tried downgrading iTunes to 10.3.1 but won't work. I think it's an Airplay issue, not a specific iTunes issue, since I'm facing the problem with Airfoil as well.
How do I trace what is going on that is preventing iTunes and Airfoil from streaming to the AirportExpress within Windows XP?
I also have another Dell Inspiron laptop on the same network running on Windows Vista, and have no problems streaming music from iTunes or Airfoil to the Airport Express on the same network, even when the network is WPA-2 Personal (TKIP+AES) protected (I've seen other postings where WPA has been an issue, WEP has not, but in my case, this is not an issue). Ditto with my iPad2.

I have the same problem with Windows 7 64bit. ITune can see AE and stream Music well. Airfoil, TuneBlade (airplay soft) can also see AE but can't connect and stream music. I ' ve already tried to setup firewall Exception list, even turning off firewall off both windows and antivirus but still got the same problem with the message 'Airfoil was unable to connect to the remote speaker " ... 's Airport Express". Please check the firewall on the computer where " ...'s Airport Express" is running and try again'. Any help would be appreciated !.

New to the Airport Express and NEED help

I am really network stupid, I just purchased an Airport Express to play Itunes over my stereo. I have a linksys router. I always get the same error message..."The airport assistant found windows is not allowed to manage wireless networks on this computer this can be a result of having a 3rd party that manages the wireless networks" ... can any one help me on this

The issue is that your laptop's wireless zero configuration (WZC) service is currently controlled by a third-party utility, instead of by WinXP OS. Typically, this is due to vendors like Dell, who provide an alternative method that is enabled by default. The AirPort Setup Assistant is expecting the native WZC service, and thus, why you're seeing the error message.
Note: I am going to assume that you are using a Dell laptop for these instructions.
You can, temporarily, disable the third-party tool, by doing the following steps:
- Right-click on the Dell Wireless Network Connection utility icon in the System Tray.
- Select "Open Utility" from the pop-up menu.
- In the "Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility" window, click on the "Wireless Networks" tab to select it.
- Uncheck the option "Let this tool manage your wireless networks."
- Click "OK" to close the window.
- Re-run the AirPort Setup Assistant to setup the AX.
To reenable this option, just do the same steps, but re-check the option.
