My first HP Mini 311 experience. (horror story)

Service Order number:
AQB780 - 01
Well this all started the 20th of April when I purchased a 311 from Ecost.com: http://www.ecost.com/Detail.aspx?edp=55 ... =155441519
I then received it on the 22nd, opened it up from the sealed HP box and upon first firing it up while charging the battery, I discovered it was getting very hot. So I downloaded some temp monitor utilities only to find out that it was hovering around 87c on the CPU!! Then upon doing more research on this very site, I found that there is supposed to be a fan working, and clearly mine did not work at all!
I was so mad! So I contacted Ecost to return it and they tell me: "Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for visiting eCOST.com.
We received the request for Return Authorization for the HP Mini 311-1037NR 1.60GHz Intel. Please be advised that we are in strict policy that should you find problems with the HP unit, DOA or defective, you are to contact the Manufacturer (HP) directly."
So I contacted HP and created a support ticket, they shipped me out an overnight fedex box that arrived the next morning, I thought great, this should be quick... I avidly check my Repair Status on HP and they say it will be returned on the 30th of April, only 6 days from when it was received. About 5 days in I notice that my status had not changed, so I called support up and they told me there is a delay on a part and 2 calls later and one request to bump it up to a Case Manager, they update my status to this: "Hewlett-Packard is awaiting the arrival of a part to complete your product repair.
Expected Delivery Date:05/14/2010"
THREE FRIGGIN WEEKS!?!? So today I finally talk to a Case Manager on the phone after returning her call, Nice lady named Jeanette or Jennifer (I think) tells me that there's nothing they can do in terms of shipping me out another refurb/new unit but she will talk to the service department to try and escalate the repair and let them know it is a high priority repair.
So now I'm sitting here, without my Mini, not even 1 hours worth of use, with 10 more days to go ALSO with the chance of it being delayed yet again...
This is ridiculous, how does HP techs miss the fact that the fan is not even working, what kind of half-assed diagnostics do they do???? And how is a simple 20 minute fan replacement job taking over 3 weeks to fix, all because of a backorder.
I really, really hope this case manager pulls through for me.
HP needs to really get their QC in check.
/end rant

*FINAL UPDATE!!*
Just got off the phone with Jennifer my case manager, who did an amazing job. I'm getting a brand new HP Mini 311-1037 spec for spec match as my old one send to me in a few days! It's confirmed, the 2 and a half week wait was worth it.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I have an extra battery as well And a 1gb stick of DDR 1066 to sell (if anyone is interested)
Hp support was a little gruesome on the wait times, but in the end I am a happy satisfied customer. Thanks HP!

  • HP Mini 311 Blue Screen

I am on my second HP Mini 311 netbook running Windows 7 Home, with a Verizon internal wireless card.
Both machines have the exact same problem.  Blue Screen.
I found the following on the Verizon blog.
The problem is identicle to mine. Help please!
"I have an HP Mini 311-1037 netbook running windows 7, with a Verizon internal wireless card (HP un2400). I'm having intermittent crashes (BSOD) which always happen immediately after I terminate a wireless connection and then shut down VZ access manager. Basically, when I exit the program, the program window goes away, I see a smaller dialog box showing that the wireless card is powering down, and then the dreaded blue screen pops up. The error message code is BUGCODE_USB_DRIVERS. That error message seems odd since the internal card is not a USB device. However, when it powers up, I see a driver loading that is called "Qualcomm HS_USB_QDLoad So far, I've had 8 of these crashes. The event log always shows the same error message as the cause of the unexpected shutdown: bugcheck 0x000000fe (0x00000008,0x00000004, 0x852f05d4, 0x00000000) After the crash screen, windows tries to restart and fails. It then offers me the option of running a startup repair. That always fails. So then I have to do a system restore (roll back to an earlier restore point). That works, but it totally hoses up my A/V software. It then takes about 20 minutes to get that fixed. On balance, a real horror show. After the last two crashes, I discovered that if I decline to run startup repair, and just keep trying to do a normal reboot, then after the second or third try, it will start up OK without doing any repair or system recovery. That is also hard to figure out. HP technical support hasn't been very helpful so for. The HP support forum shows messages from a couple other owners of the same model net book who are reporting the same problem, so there may be a generic problem here. I tried updating the wireless modem firmware, using the latest download from HP. I was OK for 4 days, and then had 2 more crashes." .

I have had the same issue since I purshased the netbook last March. I have called both Verizon and HP in regards to the issue. First Verizon has told me that it is a HP issue and then i get connected to HP. I am on the phone with them for 5 hours cuz they want be to do re-do my network and other stuff. After a couple of days samething.  Call back and the samething. I have called 5 times already until I talked to someone two days ago in Verizon IT department. The rep told me not to use the VZ access program due to some issues they are having with Windows 7. I tried to use my netbook this morning and I got the blue screen again without using the VZ access program. So I dont know anymore. You really have to pull your teeth out to get the right help from both companies. I am gonna try and call again later today and see what happens. Why can't us the customers get the proper help and no wasting our time.

  • File sharing problems and horror story (nearly)

I use Leopard on a MacBook Pro, a MacBook and a iMac G4 800 MHz (unsupported model).
I have on the iMac and the MacBook Pro many users (the same ont he two machines) and I always use Fast User Switching.
I have had very few problems with Leopard until now; I like it even if there are some glitches or some new features which are not my cup of tea (hierarchical menus missing from the dock, stacks useless when there are many items, FireWall impossibilities (?) to open specific ports, Back to my Mac working on a Lan but not from outside until now, problems with a few apps (Parallels networking erratic), ...
    Now about File Sharing.
Let say my main account is user1 (Administrator), and I have another user2 also administrator, plus user3, user4 standard users.
On the iMac I activate File Sharing.
On the MacBookPro, as user1, if I connect to the iMac Server (using afp://IPaddress_of_theiMac/) I do NOT get the dialog
"Enter your user name and password to access file server YYY
Connect to server as Guest or as Registered User"
but I directly get the dialog
"Select the volumes you want to mount on YYY"
From this, if I select user1 it mounts with full read/write permissions which is normal. It appears that I am connected with my Apple account user1&mac.com (same as mentionned in the Account panel of System Preferences).
On the other hand, if I try to connect to the user2 account, I only get limited access although in the File Sharing Preferences, user1/iMac is mentionned with full Read/Write preferences for the Home Folder of user2.
What is very surprising is that if I log on the MacBook Pro as user2, or user 3 or user4, then connect to the iMac, I first get the dialog to enter a user name and a password. This gives me access with the correct full permissions on user1/iMac or user2/iMac using the corresponding user name/password pair; this is the usual behaviour which is missing when trying to connect from user1/MacBook Pro.
    Now for the Horror Story!
Trying to understand what was going on with the permissions of the user2/iMac account, I logged in to the iMac as user1, went to the Users folder and from there had a look on the informations about user2 home folder. In the lower part of the pannel, Sharing & Permissions says "You have no access" (which is normal) and this is followed by a table where users and permissions are listed. It seems user1 has Read and Write access in contradiction with the preceding phrase...
Anyway, I tried to modify these authorizations for user2 by clicking on the lock of the Information pannel and entering name and password of the administrator. Didn't go farther than that. By mistake, I hit Command-Delete and user2 was GONE from the list AND NOT ONLY from the list in the Information window! Using Fast User Switching and going to user2, nothing left on the Desktop and NO Home anymore.
In the System Preferences/Accounts panel, user2 was still mentionned.
In the Users folder, no user2 folder anymore.
Using once again Fast User Switching, I logged as user2 and got by magic an all new Home. Nothing left in Documents, Library or other user1 folders. Standard settings for icons, dock, etc.
My first move has been to use a very recent backup to restore everything (Thank you Mike Bombich from Copy Cloner!).
Once everything was back to normal, I had a look at the Trash from user1 and guess what, the Home folder of user2 was there, complete.
So now I am left with two questions
why is it I do not have the same dialogs when connecting from all the accounts although as far as I can see, configurations are the same?
why is it possible, from an Information pannel to delete the account of another user?
    Thank you all for comments!

  • Mini 311 IDT Audio won't switch to Headphones output when plugged in.

Ok, so when I first got my 311, when I would plug in the 3.5 mini headphone cable to my head unit it the car, it would switch to the independent headphone volume control which was separate from the regular system volume, and I liked that.
Lately it has stopped switching over to that and I'm not quite sure why. I've uninstalled the IDT drivers and reinstalled them, changed settings and I still cannot get it to work like it used to. Not sure why it stopped working like that either. Does anyone have any idea on exactly how to get this to work properly?

  • HP Mini 311 - HP Battery Alert - Primary (Internal) Battery (601) - Error Message at Startup

I have a HP Mini 311-1037NR (Product Number is VBM262UA#ABA).   My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium.
When I start up my HP Mini 311 I receive the following message:
    HP Battery Alert
The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low.  For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.
    Primary (Internal) Battery (601)
    ENTER - Continue Startup
    Here's are my questions:
First of all, what exactly is the problem here?  From what I have googled, it would appear the problem is NOT my external battery, but my internal battery.  What battery is needing replacement?  Does it have a name?
Second, is there a user guide out there that would assist me with the replacement process that someone can provide a link to or at least send me the page that helps me?  Is there a YouTube video (even better)?
Third, what exactly is the part number of the battery that needs replacement and exactly where do I purchase it (How much $$ does it cost)?  This question is important as I may be able to find out how to replace the battery, but without a way to purchase the replacement battery I'm still dead in the water.
Fourth, my HP Mini 311 just dies when I unplug it.  Will a remedy for the above issue remedy this issue as well?  I really do enjoy using my little HP Mini, but would prefer to have the option to use it without a power cord.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
    Tim

    Hi Tim,
No problem and it's certainly wise to verify an answer.
I'd say you posted your question on the correct board.  It's usually best just to post once on the relevant board.  I do agree that the term 'internal' does cause unnecessary confusion.
Here's a link to your Maintenance & Service Guide.
Yes, I'm certain that the 601 error code refers to your notebooks main battery ( 602 is a failure code for machines that have a secondary storage cell ).  Interestingly, there is no error code generated for a failing rtc battery - or any in built diagnostic test for it, just the usual symptom of the system clock re-setting after each shutdown.
There's also a HP document regarding start-up battery alerts on the following link.

  • Recovery image for Mini 311-1037NR

I have a Mini 311-1037NR that has been returned from one of our users. The recovery partition has been wiped by the user (they used it as a data drive I think). if there a place that I can download the recovery partition image or a recovery iso that can be written to a USB drive to factory recover this? Purchasing the CDs won't help as I have no way to use them on the netbook.

You will need to use a USB dvd drive for a recovery disk set (CD or usb media).
Unfortunately downloading the recovery partition is not an option.
You will need to purchase a recovery disk set or recovery usb media from HP or an HP partner.
Here is a link to order Windows 7 recovery media for the mini from HP.
    Best regards,

  • Mini 311 - RAM and OS question (UK based)

I'm very interested in the Mini 311, because it is one of the few netbooks with both HDMI and VGA outputs that is in my price range (with decent enough graphics to do what I want with it).
But being in the UK, there is not yet any sign of a Windows 7 model (I spoke to HP sales on the phone, and they're not even sure IF it will make it over here, let alone WHEN).
I wouldn't mind this so much, as I still like XP, and am not likely to use many (if any) of Windows 7's new features on a netbook... But i've also heard that the XP models have a max RAM limit of 1GB, where as the Windows 7 models can be upgraded higher. Is this true?
If that IS the case, then i'd like some further opinions:
    1.  Is the Mini 311 still an adequate netbook with XP and 1GB of RAM... I will be using it for: Documents, Videos, Web-Surfing/MSN/Skype, and older games (particularly emulators of old consoles, such as SNES, Gameboy Advance, and N64 - via the HDMI port onto an HDTV).
    2. Is it worth me holding out to see if a Windows 7 model DOES come out in the UK... Or would it even be worth me getting a relative in the US to purchase one and send it to me (apparently all I need to do is buy a different AC adapter)? Or is the XP model good enough?
    3. Any better options for a netbook that has both HDMI and VGA, and has enough power to do what I want?
*EDIT* I also read somewhere that XP gives almost an hour better battery life than 7 with a 6-cell battery... any ideas whether that's true, or close to true?
    Thanks for any assistance!!

I will be using it for: Documents, Videos, Web-Surfing/MSN/Skype, and older games (particularly emulators of old consoles, such as SNES, Gameboy Advance, and N64 - via the HDMI port onto an HDTV).  Absolutely.  Unless you are doing graphics or video editing you'll love it.
    2. Is it worth me holding out to see if a Windows 7 model DOES come out in the UK... Or would it even be worth me getting a relative in the US to purchase one and send it to me (apparently all I need to do is buy a different AC adapter)? Or is the XP model good enough? I wouldn't wait.  Even here in the states the mini are only coming with Win 7 Premium, which doesn't run all older programs compatible with XP.  Win 7 Professional will run all XP programs but it'll cost ya!
    3. Any better options for a netbook that has both HDMI and VGA, and has enough power to do what I want?
Nope.  I wanted want you wanted and love this mini 311.  I was looking at a new Dell Inspireon (sp?) of some sort but ended up with the 311.
*EDIT* I also read somewhere that XP gives almost an hour better battery life than 7 with a 6-cell battery... any ideas whether that's true, or close to true?  I read that too but I think the test comparision was only running minumum applications.   Regardless, XP will provide somewhat longer battery life but I wouldn't let that be your deciding factor.
If you end up with a 311, make to update the drivers.  It took me awhile struggling to get the HDMI out untill I realized I had to update the video AND audio drivers.
    cheers

  • Hp mini 311 purchased from verizon

i have an hp mini 311.   it is running horribly slow and stops and crashes, to the point where it is not hardly usable.  ive run several virus and malward programs and all say its clean..  ive done the obvoius such as deleting cache and temp file...  in any event i am giving the computer to my daughter to use and want to just restore it to the factory setting or just reburn the operating system to the machine which should take care of whatever the problem is.   when i click the "restore to factory settings" option, it tells me to insert the windows operating disc.   dont have one because this unit doesnt have a disc drive.  i did purchas an external usb drive, which works quite well..  so........   what is the easiest way to restore this machine back to original ?    there are no files on the machine that i can not do without.

Did you try Pressing F11 right after pressing power on button?
Sorry because of different timezone I might not be able to help/reply you right away.IF that happens I deeply apologize!

  • Mini 311-1000 HSDPA modem

Can anyone tell me what internal HSDPA modem is compatible with the HP Mini 311-1000?
In particular, I'd like to use SIERRA MC8775 HS2300 but cannot identify if this is supported or not?

SATA-II drives will work in SATA-I systems and vice versa so that is not an issue. As far as the rpms I usually tell people not to worry about using a 7200 rpm drive but the fact is they do run just a bit hotter and take a little more juice which is bigger factor in a netbook. HP offers a 500 gig 5400 rpm drive as an option so I am sure you would have no issues with a 500 gig 5400 rpm SATA -I or -II drive and I can't say the same on a 7200 rpm drive.

  • Sound click skip stutter mini 311

I upgraded my Hp Mini 311 from Win 7 Home Premium to Win7 Pro.
Since then every audio track I have skips EXACTLY 20 seconds from the end of a track (just like a dirty cd) regardless of the track length. I'm also unable to restore the mini to factory defaults, and I can't get a reply from Hp customer support for  restore disks or help or warranty, despite many attempts.
I tried a fix in another thread which was unsuccessful.
    So far I have:
    *Checked RAM/CPU usage.
    *Removed all possible conflicting programs
    *Reinstalled drivers
    *Removed all drivers
    *Used windows generic drivers
    *Used different media players
*Enabled/Disabled all enhancements and exclusive rights to sound devices.
    *Used different media player programs
    *Rebuilt the media library
*Played media from different devices such as a network and USB
*Re-installed the OS (Restoring the Original OS no longer works) - I would kill if someone could help me get hold of restore disks please!
    *De fragmented ALL drives
*Put media players as priority processes
*Sacrificed virgins to the Great Cthulu
    * Cleaned the windows registry
Please, for the love of god and all that is holy, someone help me!

I found a solution on myhpmini.com I've posted it below for anyone else with this problem:
Here's a quick guide to fix the stuttering problem.
    * Disclaimer * I take no responsibility if this fubars your Mini. Do this at your own discretion.
Open Control Panel -> Device Manager. Go to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Choose the Nvidia nForce Serial ATA Controller.
Go to the Driver tab. Click Update Driver. Choose Browse my computer for driver software. Click Let me pick from list of device drivers.
Select the Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller. Click Next, Okay, or whatever it asks for, and you're done.
The computer will need to reboot twice - once for the controller, and a second time to redetect the hard drive.
    Cheers!

  • HP Mini 311 + PCIE slot (pref SSD)

    Hello,
I would like to know what the available upgrades are for the PCIE slot that is in the HP mini 311. I would also like to know if the PCIE slot can be used for an SSD. If so, what kind/brand/model/size.
    Thank you,

I contacted HP support on chat for this same question.  Aparently its only used for a WWAN card for mobile wireless coverage.  I figured maybe install a HD encoder to play HD movies better but hp support says no.  Might try anyway lol

  • I uploaded 3 audiobooks from iTunes to my iPhone 5 with the latest ios7 on it. Each of them only plays the first 15 mins of the playback and then silence, the bar shows the book is still playing but no sound, any ideas? Thanks

I uploaded 3 audiobooks from iTunes to my iPhone 5 with the latest ios7 on it. Each of them only plays the first 15 mins of the playback and then silence, the bar shows the book is still playing but no sound, any ideas? Thanks

What happens when playing the same books in iTunes. Is there sound after 15 min?
If also silent in iTunes, check the info tab where you can see the item is an audiobook, etc. Check the volume bar, this normally is on the zero point.
When an audio book is really low in audio, I tend to move this to the plus side (+1=max), but for some strange reason this bar was at -1 in some books I had and they also seemed to play in absolute silence.

  • Horror story...

Just thought I would post this horror story...
I have a MacPro 3,1. I upgraded it to snow leopard last weekend and everything went fine. On reboot I got a window asking for system Events... Rebooted again and it was fine.
I use VMWare Fusion, Mail, Logic 9 and many other apps but those are the primary ones. Everything was great for a week... no problems...
This morning I was asked to do a quick guitar track for a project so I fired up logic 9 and enabled record on my primary interface: apogee duet. I also have a tascam fireone plugged in and I use the jog wheel a lot for audio editing.
As I was monkeying with my guitar cable the firewire cable to the back of the tascam fireone came unplugged. Logic brought up a spinning ball and sat for a few minutes then displayed a dialog saying the Mackie control was not present. I didn't really care so I cleared it. However I was unable to get record to take or playback any audio out of logic. It was like my duet showed audio from the guitar but it was not getting into logic.
I went in and tried resetting the core audio devices but no luck. Ok time for a reboot. I shutdown everything and rebooted. After the MacPro came alive I clicked on logic in the dock and the icon bounced and bounced and bounced.... Eventually it stopped bouncing but no logic window or question about opening prior project.
The force quit list showed it as not responding. I figured ok something strange happened to a plist or something. I went searching but could find nothing wrong. I reset PRAM. Did cold boots... Finally I came to notice that ANY application which has anything to do with audio will not load. iTunes will not load. Quicktime will not load... Even System Preferences will not load.
Safari and mail would load but would periodically hand for long periods of time.
I rebooted numerous times, repaired permissions. I even ran the snow leopard install again. Nothing seemed to work. While loading one audio program that has a progress bar I noticed that it hung while trying to locate core audio. So it seems that somehow this accidental removal of the firewire cable blew away core audio.
I was unable to find a solution to it. Prior to installing snow leopard I had used SuperDuper to create a copy of my primary disk into a disk image. I'm in the process of restoring that image back to the primary drive to see if this is a software or hardware problem.
The sad thing about this is I have quite a few things that I need to deauthorize (iTunes, Melodyne) so that if I have to do a clean install that I can reinstall them. Unfortunately I can't even run the programs so I can deauthorize these things.
I can only hope that the image restore works... If it doesn't then it may be a hardware problem. I do have AppleCare so perhaps that call will be next.
Firewire is supposed to be plug/play. I can't see how removal of a device by accidental unplugging could completely hose a system to the point of having to restore backups and possibly a complete reinstall.
I love Apple hardware, this is what I was hoping I left behind when vacating Windows.
    M

The process that seemed to fix this was to reset all controllers, SMC, power management, etc... Then I had to restore my system back to leopard then redo the update to Snow Kitty...
anyway things seem ok at this point.
