My homemade DVDs won't open in Quicktime or Final Cut Express. Do I need a converter? MPEG Streamclip didn't work. They seem to be .VOB, .BUP and .IFO files.
Help please!

David, thank you so much. After a great deal of frustration and despair at ever getting it working, I can now edit my precious home movies. Appreciate you taking the time to help me! Vicki

  • Exporting from a quicktime from Final Cut Express HD

Can anyone tell me the best settings to export a Quicktime from Final Cut Express HD maintaining the best quality but getting the file size as small as possible?

It depends on what you want to export to/for. iDVD, streaming web ... what's your target use?

  • Opening Live Type Into Final Cut Express project

I cannot get Live Type to open. When in Final Cut Express the icon box comes up with 'File Error - Wong Type'. Don't know where else to look

You cannot open LiveType or a LiveType project in FCE. LT is a standalone application. You can import a finished LT project into FCE, but you cannot open it.

  • Quicktime and Final Cut Express HD

    Hello All,
I am importing and editing widescreen content in Final Cut Express HD. When I export to quicktime the size compresses to 4:3, why is that? I would like to export to QT and drop finished content to idvd HD or DVD studio pro, for widesreen presentation. Will the content resize to widescreen in idvd HD or DVD studio pro?
    I thank you in anticipation

  • Newest version of Quicktime crashes Final Cut Express

The other day I installed the latest update for Quicktime (v. 7.6). I have been trying to edit video on Final Cut Express and every time I play the video on the timeline, it freezes and eventually shuts the program off. This is the second time I have had this problem with a quicktime update. Can someone help me get the previous version back?

    I am using FCE v.3.0.
I followed the link and was going to delete the items it listed, but when I did went to the Preferences folder, I had an app called com.apple.RegFinalCutExpress.plist and I didn't see a folder for Final Cut Express User Data. So I did a search for both of them on my system and it found all of them. Should I delete them from the search findings? It said that they were where they in the Preferences folder but when I opened it previously, they weren't there.

  • Mov file cant be opened in quicktime or Final cut pro 7

    Hello People,
Im about to pull my hairs out. I have a .mov file recorded on a Canon 7D. I have played the file before on quicktime and it used be ok. But one time I opened in Final cut pro 7 but didint get to finish the project (however im not sure if I compressed it or did something to the file, I think I didnt). Months later im trying to open that same file in quicktime player and it says
The document “MVI_5515.mov” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands...
and if Im trying to drag and drop the file into Final Cut Pro  says  Wrong File Type.
When I check the more info section in the info box, it doesnt show the codec like in other mov files. It just says about the last time the file was opened.
It cant be either previewed like other files. Of course something is wrong with it..I dont know why or how. But I really need that file to work and be fixed.
    Please help me out!!
    Thanks!!!

You can't "improve" the quality of what is already a digital video. The "data" that makes up the video can't be improved once the camera records it as a file. There isn't even a theory about this. Going from one codec to a higher codec does not "add" any quality. In fact, your method is degrading your quality, as you're causing your HDV data file to be re-encoded twice to another HDV file.
You're creating a larger size video file, with less quality do to doubling the compression generation with QuickTime Conversion, and it's the unnecessary increased file size that is making the CPU work overtime to play it back.
Export > Quicktime, self-contained, this is the BEST quality you'll get, the most efficient playback, too.
If you want it to play back easier, convert it to H.264 (quality set to medium, trust me), or ProRes 422.

  • I can't open my copy of Final Cut Express 4

I got it in the mail today but I can't open the box. Can you open it without tearing up the box? I like to keep my software boxes. Thanks.

Oh, I figured it out ... you have to pull the tab.

  • Inaccurate Final Cut Express documentation: cannot open ANY file except QuickTime

    Hi,
According to Final Cut Express 4 documentation, I should be able to import several kinds of video files in Final Cut Express, including AVI and MPEG files. In practice, only .mov files can be imported. When I tried to import .mp4 files from my Sony digital camera as well as from my Android phone, I got error messages about unrecognized file format. When I tried AVI files from Bandicam, I got the sound but only a white image. Yes, there are tools converting files to .mov format, but they stubbornly REENCODE everything, audio and video. I though the .mov was a container format so a simple tool could simply repackage the .avi, .mp4, etc., into .mov. No, in practice, reencode so loss of time and quality. Knowing that Final Cut Express perform its own encoding, called the rendering operation, this is starting to be quite messy as video editing process. Is it because my version of Mac OS X is too old and only newer versions provide an up-to-date QuickTime stack supporting other formats than .mov?

Partially solved. The AVI files I was trying to import contained Xvid-encoded video with PCM audio. Installing the Perian package added a QuickTime component for Xvid, which allows to not only play my AVIs but also import them into Final Cut Express.
Still no luck with MPEG4 files from my Android phone, but I was able to import MPEG4 from my Sony digital camera.

  • Chapters to DVD from Final Cut Express 4

I'm looking for a DVD authoring app that is compatible with Final Cut Express 4.  I want to have the chapter markers I created in FCX 4 to appear in my final DVD.  I tried exporting my FCX 4 project with chapter markers as a Quick Time movie and using iDVD '08 to burn a DVD.  In the dvd play-preview, none of the chapters were present.  I don't see anyway to create chapters with iDVD '08.
Is there something I'm missing in Final Cut Express 4 when creating chapter markers or exporting? Is there a Mac version of a DVD authoring app other than iDVD that would work?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Tom.
I followed the instructions and was able to get chapters from Final Cut Express to work in the iDVD preview.
I'm not sure how to control the quality of the final DVD since choosing File>Export>QuickTime Movie goes straight to export without any frame rate or resolution choices.  Is there a default setting that is adequate for TV viewing?
Thanks again for saving me time.

  • Compressing quicktime in final cut

I have a friend who needs to put something on his websight, I have a quicktime file that is 1.7gigs and he needs it compressed down so he can fit the whole thing on his sight, he says he needs it compressed down to about 15mb if that is possible can anyone tell me how to to this in final cut or do I need to go into compressor and what settings would I use, thanks so much for your time.
    Bill

I jumped into this thread while researching the most effective way to get large files on the web as well. When opening FCP5 [5.0.1], and following the instructions provided ["try: export using quicktime conversion > Mpeg4 > H.264"]
I end up with black video output, though the audio is fine. The file is a .mov and I have not made any adjustments to setting in an effort to keep it simple.
    Any input would be appreciated
    Thanks!

  • Sound Blip is here to stay. Good job Final Cut Express HD won't help you!

Imovie 6HD is super but the sound blip on faded out music files is unforgivable. When you print (export) to a quicktime movie it puts all sorts of audio blips and volume changes onto the finished file that aren't there on playback in iMovie.
Luckilly I have final cut express HD.
Unlickilly It can't import any of my imovie project files.
It just keeps telling me that there are 'unknown files'.
So what am I to do? Can't work with the audio in imovie and can't import to final cut express HD. and yes I have the latest versions of all of these.
    Please help me

It is apparently an issue when creating PAL files. There are posts discussing this and it is a well documented problem. There are a few round about moves you can do. Check the other posts for some of these. It seems that the best bet is to uninstall and reinstall Motion 4 or 5 until this big bug is fixed. I Have imported the iMotion file into Final Cut Pro by open file and exported it from there.
    Good luck

  • How do I open my Final Cut Express 4.0 files in Final Cut Pro 10.1.3?

    Hello,
I used Final Cut Pro when I was in college and when I graduated in 2010, I bought Final Cut Express 4.0. I recently bought Final Cut Pro 10.1.3 two days ago and I am having trouble opening up my old Final Cut Express 4.0 files. When I do go to open up these files they only open up with Final Cut Express and I always get the message: file's format is too new for this version of the application.
How do I open these Final Cut Express 4.0 files in Final Cut Pro 10.1.3?
    Thank you!
    Anna

TThere is no way to go directly from FCE to FCPX. If you know somehow who has FCP7, they can open the FCE projects and export XML files. These can be converted to FCPX XML format using the 7toX utility.

  • .mov won't open in Quicktime

Hello all. I have a strange issue with a .mov file. It is visable to me in the Finder preview window (i.e. I can press the play arrow and watch the movie and hear sound), but when I try to open it with Quicktime X, Quicktime 7, FInal Cut, etc. I get the message "Searching for movie data in file" and then "The movie file 'filename-av.mov1' cannot be found."  I was able to open it in VLC, but can't figure out a way to export it from there in a format QT will understand.
My previous job-holder made the movie in Final Cut, so I know that I have the proper codecs installed (DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, Linear PCM). I've opened it before, with no problems.
Any ideas of how to get it open and accessable? I need to open it to eventually convert it to h.264, so a solution that would do that is totally fine.
    Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. It is standalone, about 2.05 GB. I transferred only that file to another computer to test that, and had the same thing happen (plays in VLC and preview, not in QT).
Am confused. You copied which file to another computer—the one you have or the one for which the QT player is looking? Yes, 2.05 GB does sound like a "standalone" file unless the reference is made to only a small segment of content or a single track of additional data. And, as far as VLC is concerned, did you actually play the entire file or simply open it in VLC? (I.e., VLC is a transport stream media player and will open unterminated files which QT will not open unless it can "see" the EOF.) As to QuickView, it is based on a different tecnology and doesn't even require the sourcing player codecs to be available for playback. Too bad the file won't open in QT so you could check the resources in the "Properties" window.

  • Movie won't open in Quicktime and won't save in iTunes

I have just finished editing a project and I am trying to share it to iTunes or Quicktime.
When I share it to "Apple Devices 720", it was automatically saved to the Final Cut Project file folder under "Shared Items", and inside I found the Quicktime file for the project. But it won't open in Quicktime, I am getting an error message that says:
"The document XXXXX (1280 x 720).m4v-TEMP” could not be opened. The movie's file format isn't recognized."
I tried to share it to iTunes, nothing works. I just want to be able to play it.
Ideally, I would like to be able to play the movie in iTunes on my iMac, and be able to sync it to iPod Touch.

Actually, I solved the problem. follow these instrudctions:
In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences—the tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
Remove the "com.apple.finalcutpro.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Remove the "Final Cut Pro User Data" folder from the Preferences folder.
If you can't find com.apple.finalcutpro.plist delete any com.apple.finalcut..... files.
