My iMac G5 1.83 17" has kernel crash

After having a electrical power surge I had to replace the hard drive because of corrupt file. I am testing with my Mac Pro hard drive and keep getting a kernel crash report contents below. Can any one read this and tell me what is going on.

Usually, kernel panics are hardware-related.
So I'd start with this: [Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509].
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: mdworker
If the AHT doesn't find anything, the mdworkder process is part of the indexing for Spotlight, among other things. I'd start by excluding all your drives/partitions from Spotlight indexing, via +System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.+
If that stops the problem, you know you've got a corrupted file or files somewhere. Verify your internal HD per #6 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).
If that finds and fixes anything, remove the Spotlight exclusion.
If it doesn't, I'd suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.5 "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
If that doesn't help, reinstall OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc (that won't affect anything else), then apply the "combo" again.
If the problem persists, you'll have to use "Trial and Error" on the Spotlight exclusion to narrow down the location of the corrupted file(s).

  • Lots of hard locks and kernel crashes/oops ["SOLVED"-bad motherboard]

I have been experiencing a lot of hard locks and kernel crashes/oops(es?) lately. This computer has always had random freezes in both WinXP and Linux (various distributions -- including live cds).
Here is my latest crash (from dmesg):

    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
I added nosmp and the other parameters at the install/rescue cd's suggestion. I tried using the microcode package (I have a P4 HT) as suggested by someone in another thread.
I've found that the freezes will happen at the beginning of heavy CPU or disk usage (such as compilation or pacman db parsing). The hd is not the original one from this system (it was a hand-me-down), so I don't think that's the problem. The video card is different and the RAM is new. The only components that are still around are:
    P4 HT processor (2.60 ghz)
    Albatron  PX865PE II
    Enermax power supply
Any ideas? It also says "bad eip value" when the system has kernel crashes (especially on boot).

  • My 2011 Imac 27" has been crashing and running very erratically and slowly. The only change has been the update to 10.8.1, I will paste the consol kernal panic report.  Is there a software conflict?

Hi, first time posting on the forum. I own a 2011 IMAC i5 with 12gb of ram 27 inch. Over the last five days the computer has been crashing and running very erratically. When the computer has crashed the entire computer has become unresponsive and frozen, requiring a reboot or two. At other times the computer has slowed way down and the dreaded spinning beachball has appeared and the computer takes its sweet time trying to process something. Iphoto has also crashed independently when the beahball will not disappear. THE entire system is running way below its usual stellar quad performance. I have run a ram test and everything has come back clean, I have fixed any broken permissions, and deleted any newly added software (starcraft2). There is over 250Gb of hard drive free and the activity monitor shows no unusual processes. The computer automatically updated it self recently to 10.8.1 has this caused a conflict with some software? Or is there a deeper problem?
Below are the console reports. There are also reports for unversalaccessd  ,  mdworker, Isregister, loginwindow, iphoto, DMproxy which can be supplied.
    Thanks for any help.
    Richardx

Hello.  I just bought my first Imac.  Each family member has created an account.  My question is: can each person use imessages privately when logged into their account?  instead of everyone seeing everyones imessages?  is there a way to do this?

I believe the short answer tot that is "yes" however I recommend you contact AppleCare to find out You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support when you buy any new Mac. This is the ideal time to begin using it. I'd also recommend that you purchase AppleCare, it will extend your 1 year warranty to 3 years and offer you 3 years of telephone support in addition to other services. You can locate the correct phone number in your part of the planet (Calgary, Canada??) by clicking Contact Apple for support and service

You can resize the keyboard window, positioning the mouse pointer at the edge of the window, clicking and dragging to the desired size.

  • IMac G5 has various crashes at startup ever since I messed with iCal

This may not be the reason, but ever since I dragged and dropped the iCal program from my Powerbook g4 on to my iCal in my iMac G5 (I foolishly thought this would copy my calanders on to my G5, I now know the actual files are in another folder), my G5 has been crashing at the startup. First, it only crashed once, now it will crash 5+ times before the computer successfully boots. If this helps, sometimes the apple startup icon is fuzzy, then freezes; sometimes a cascade of fuzzy lines run down the screen and a fuzzy black "you must shut down your computer..." pops up and I do so; sometimes it successfully starts up but then crashes at the beginning of use; and sometimes I'll get all the way to opening up a program and it will freeze into fuxzziness. almost all the freezes are at the startup. Is this happening because of my foolishish move with iCal? Is it because I have always been shutting down and starting up my computer every day? (I no longer do this) Is it the Firefox I downloaded with an html extension a month ago? Is it the fact that I've been operating several design programs on only 512 mb of ram? (I know this is wrong, but I don't have a lot of money right now) How should I troubleshoot?

Hi - the only thing I can think of would be how much HD space to you have left, I''ve read many posts suggesting at least 10% of your total HD might be needed to have your machine boot up successfully.
You can also try resetting your SMU, which deals with power issues, and there is a link there to reset PRAM. One last suggestion would be to actually unplug any peripherals.
BTW - I do website management etc, and found the 512 to be woefully low. I did some light html text editing and some light to medium image editing and my machine crashed (spinning beach ball). Since then, I have just been monitoring my iMac, using it for internet stuff, email, and very occasional and light image editing. I figure if it can go another 30 days without an episode, I will reward my iMac with additional memory... Good luck, Rick

  • HT4855 iMac mail open and mouse has frozen on screen, new batteries in mouse..no change. turning iMac off and back on ..no change. need advice asap

Imac mail open and mouse has frozen on screen...please advise?

The Mac uses an "All devices active" philosophy with pointing devices and keyboards.
If you have additional pointing devices attached, especially a graphics tablet, it is still directing mouse operations at the same time as the mouse you have your hand on. The end result is the SUM of commands from all such devices.

  • My iMac Version 10.6.8 has problems starting up. I often get a white screen without the apple icon.

My iMac Version 10.6.8 has problems starting up. I often get a white screen without the apple icon. Then I must turn the computer off and restart. Restarting will usually bring up the Apple icon and the start screen. What could be causing this? And how can I resolve this issue. My Mac is still under warranty, I've had it just 7 months.

Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC.

  • My iMac (OS 10.7.4) has suddenly stopped printing to my Epson CX4800 printer through Airport Extreme, although it will print if connected via USB. Meanwhile, my MacBook (OS 10.5.8) prints still prints wirelessly. Please help.

May iMac (OS 10.7.4) has suddenly stopped printing to my Epson CX4800 printer through Airport Extreme, though my MacBook (OS 10.5.8) continues to function just fine). The iMac will print if it is connected to the printer directly via USB. The iMac continues to connect to the Internet wirelessly. I've tried resetting the printer and ensuring the driver is up to date, but no joy.
    Any suggestions?

  • I upgrade my mid 2007 IMac to Yosemite and it has been running very slowly since then. I have 3GB of ram. Should I go back to Mavericks?

I upgraded my mid 2007 IMac to Yosemite and it has been running very slowly since then. I have 3GB of ram. Has this been a problem for anyone else?

Your iMac year and model is low on RAM.
3 GBs is really not enough RAM to operate your Mac under OS X Yosemite OR Mavericks smoothly and efficiently.
New Macs now ship with 8 GBs of RAM as minimum, base installed amount of RAM.
Your Mac model can take a maximum amount of 6 GBs of RAM.
I strongly recommend purchasing and installing the necessary RAM amount to meet the 6 GB RAM total.
If you live in the U.S. , Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
OWC (macsales.com) has the proper RAM module or kit needed to get your Mac to the 6 GB RAM total limit.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5300DDR2S6GP/
RAM is user installable and is, relatively, easy to install be newbie and novice Mac users.

  • I am trying to use airplay from my iMac but the airplay symbol has disappeared?

I am trying to use airplay from my iMac but the airplay symbol has disappeared. It works perfectly well from my iPhone and iPad and tt did work for a while from the iMac allowing me to select multiple speakers including Apple TV and my two panasonic stereo systems which are airplay compatible, but now only works from iPhone/iPad. Any guidance would be appreciated.

I as having a similar problem with the iOS remote application.  I was trying to stream my iMac's media to my Apple TV, but the iMac would not show up as a choice.  This was particularly frustrating because I have updated in the last to weeks to 1.) The Yosemite Beta on my iMac, 2.) New sotware on my ATV, and 3.) iOS8 on my phone.  It was impossible to ascertain which of those three updates was the culprit.  So after much troubleshooting (and much swearing), the following seemed to work:
One-by-one, disengage home sharing on all three devices and then re-engage. Pretty simple.  Let us know if it works for you!
