I need this fixed extremely quickly. I'm a photographer and I have two Senior photo shoots on Sunday (September 16), so I need to be able to use my computer that night for editing.

No.  Of course you are suppose to have backups for all of your important work.

  • Opinions - time for a new computer?  need more RAM, Time Machine back up full - get new computer?

I am in a quandary.  My early 2008 iMac needs more Ram.  I could upgrade from 2gb to 4gb for around $60.  My 1T external hard drive for Time Machine is full and I do not relish the idea of it erasing old data if I continue to use it this way, but then I am shelling out more money for a new hard drive.  Can get new 3T hd for about $200.  Is it worth it to shore up my computer?  I have recently upgraded OS to ML and it is really starting to act sluggish.  I hate the idea of having to transfer everything over to a new Mac and therefore new OS.   I need a working computer every day for business for my husband, so it would be impossible to go without a computer while things are being transferred over - and how long would it take for me to do that.  Plus, will files and photos be transferred over exactly as I have organized them?  I have spent a lot of time organizing bookmark folders in Safari, mailboxes in Mail and albums and folders in iPhoto.  Don't want to start from scratch again.   Also don't like the idea that the new iMacs don't have a slot for dvds and cds, playing and burning.  I do a lot of this kind of thing.  So then I would need to buy a separate thing for doing this as well as the computer itself.  Have wondered how many things have changed from ML to Maverick.  Another big learning curve???
Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions.  I am a senior citizen and don't know how to sort through this.  One thing I think about is that I don't know how much longer I will be living and able to do computer work. I know everything is a risk, but would like some advice even if it is only an opinion.

It's probably time for a new machine. You won't have to start from scratch. Migration Assistant will bring over all of your data and apps (some may need to be re-activated using product keys). Depending on how much you actually have, a few hours should be all it takes over Ethernet.
Time Machine should continually erase the oldest backups when it needs space for new ones.
You might want to do both. Upgrade the RAM in the old machine to the max it will take, and buy a new machine as well. If your husband really needs a machine available all the time for business, having a 'spare' is a good thing.
Check out what's available in the refurb store. They are virtually indistinguishable from new retail stock and come with a full warranty. You can save hundreds.

  • My computer is 3 years old and runs very slowly. Is it time for a new computer, or just more RAM?

I don't want to invest in a brand new computer, but I've never installed RAM, so I don't know how it affects the computer and whether that will really help me or not.

I recently rejuvenated a MacBook by adding more memory and a faster disk.  I am pleased with the results.   For me, it was a good $200 investment ($100 memory + $100 disk).
What model MBP do you have (size, season and year) (e.g, 13” Mid 2010)?
You can find this information at  > About This Mac > More Info...
It came with 4 GB of RAM, unless it is the low end of the original 2009 model which came with 2.  MBP memory is upgradeable to at lest 8 GB (~$100).
Installation is not hard, especially if you purchase this $5 toolkit that has the necessary tiny screwdriver.

    and/or videos at OWC (macsales.com) or ifixit.com.
OWC (macsales.com) and Crucial are good sources for memory.
The other common upgrade is to replace the disk with a faster one.  The hybrid SSHD drives are now much faster than standard 5400 RPM drives.  They are also easy to replace.  OWC is having a sale on these for $100, including a handy installation kit. (Seagate 1 TB hybrid SSHD 2.5”)

  • HT201272 Will Apple give me all the music I purchased from iTunes for my new computer?

My computer crashed so I bought a new one but my entire music library is gone. And to make matters worse it didn't back up on my external hard drive so I would like to get all the music I purchased from iTunes back on to my new computer. My only thought is I am at the mercy of Apple to get it...am I right? Thank you

Whether or not you'll be able to depends on what country you're in, and whether the music is still available in the iTunes Store.

  • Are there any problems with having 3.6 & 5 on same Mac OSX, single profile, but only one version FF open at a time?

Will having two versions of firefox (3.6 and 5) on my computer (Macbook Pro, OS X 10.5.8) at the same time, using the same profile, BUT never running both firefox versions at the same time, only having one at a time open?

In my case it seems that Firefox just doesn't "see" (or can't find?) the coupon printer application anymore after the FF update. (and yes, my add-ons are enabled - to answer the tech support people's first question).
For me, the coupon printer doesn't even show up in my Firefox "Add-Ons" list anymore. Is that what people typically see when they're saying the coupon printer "doesn't work" with FF? The coupon printer was visible on the add-ons list before my FF update, and now it's totally Gone! It seems that Firefox just doesn't "see" (or can't find?) the coupon printer application anymore since the FF update.
When I'm on the coupons.com site and I click "print coupons", it tells me I haven't installed the application. But it Is installed on my computer, I can see it in my folders, and it works on IE, so it's definitely there.
BTW - I have uninstalled/reinstalled the coupon printer application. I have tried all the suggestions on the Mozilla help/forum sites, as well as the Coupons.com web site. I have closed and re-started Firefox after the installation. I have also shut down and restarted my pc after installation. I tried installing the application with Firefox open, and tried it again with Firefox closed. I've even cleared out all my cookies/history associated with Coupons.com.
... I can't think of anything else to try, except for the "solution" of using IE for coupons.
If it Really is a problem on the Coupon.com end of things, do you think it's worth it if we bombard the coupons.com support team with messages saying they need to fix the problem? (or just a waste of time?) ;(

  • Are there any plans to fix Apple ID's? Please don't answer unless you work for Apple.

The only reason I have 2 apple IDs is poor planning by Apple. Mobile Me users were assigned a me.com ID, despite the fact that I already had an Apple ID. Now the me.com ID has followed me to iCloud and I can't get rid of it. When I set up iCloud I attempted to use my original Apple ID but was disallowed due to it "already being in use"...by me of course, but no matter. Now I am stuck with 2 IDs. Apple has confirmed this.
To update apps, you must sign in with the original ID or repurchase it. Why would I do this? I purchased it using my ID and used it on only one device. To sync everything though I must use my me.com ID. (Remember-it can't be changed to your original ID) If you sign in with the me.com ID your account shows that you have made no purchases and therefore you have nothing to update. If you try to install the app using the new ID it tries to charge you money again. And of course you constantly have sync issues because your phone and your computer are signed in using separate Apple IDs.
Now, you want me to sign up for an @icloud address? Yeah right. That will simplify things.
Nice going Apple. Way to simplify my life.

At which site are you trying to change it at?
Is it an apple email address for the ID or is an outside email address?
Do both Apple IDs have .me addresses associated with them?
It will not let you change an address from one Apple ID to another as long as they are both listed as an apple ID login. If you want to add one address from one ID to the other ID, you must first delete the address you want to move from the original.
My first ID was one listed with an outside email address. What I did was changed the primary address for that ID to another outside address which I created in gmail and then added in the Manage ID screen. Once I changed the primary address, I deleted the original address from that ID. I then logged into the Manage ID site for the second ID and I was able to add it to the original ID to it since it was deleted from the first one.
Once I had the all the correct email addresses associated with the same Apple ID, I was able to log into iTunes and edit and change the ID to the one I'm using now.
Maybe that will help you if I made that clear enough.
Like I said, I did this a long time back and it may not work the same for you.

  • HELP! My iPod 4 has been so laggy lately. Is there any way to fix it?

Hello. I currently have an iPod Touch 4g running iOS 6.1.3. Ever since I've updated, my iPod Touch has been extremely laggy. Apps start to crash, home button stops responding, and my in-home Wi-Fi keeps being in a way shut down from my iPod. It's on one minute and says I'm dissconnected another. Please help me find out how I can stop so much lag. Thank You and please respond with no rude comment!)

Have you tried a restart - Hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep button and continue to hold them down until the Silver Apple appears. Once the Home screen redisplays, see if things are improved.
I would also suggest that you take a little tour through all of your Settings to make sure that you don't have any resource hogs running (like Bluetooth when you don't have any discoverable devices around).....
    Cheers,

  • I recently switched to Verizon. In some areas it goes down to 3G, but then moving to an area I know has good 4G, it remains stuck in 3G until I turn airplane mode on then off again. Is there any way to fix this without having to cycle through airplane mod

Phone is LG G3. I find it odd that I have to cycle through airplane mode to fix this particular issue.

There has been no improvement thus far.
I recently switched from AT&T for a cheaper price, but so far my experience connection-wise across Chicago has been absolutely terrible. Where I used to get 4-5 bars 4GLTE in my apartment at 60640, I now get 3G if I'm lucky (have NEVER seen 1X before on AT&T even in the most remote of locations).
I also have poor connections near my work at 60611. Had (again) a bar of 1X and the person next to me had 3 bars 4G LTE with AT&T again.
So far plenty of regrets... and doing my research, I see many complaints in Chicago LTE services. Hoping there is a fix out there soon.

  • HT202179 MacBook Pro Fan is very loud overnight. How are they replaced?

MacBook Pro Fan just started to make a lot of noise. This is a MacBook Pro 15 inch 2.4/2.2GHz purchased June 2007. Is this something that most people can replace or does Apple need  to fix it or is it time to get a new one base on age and potential repair cost?

Your Mac uses measured temperatures to determine fan speed in a feedback loop.
Racing fans are an indication that your Mac is overheating, or a temperature sensor is not working properly. Replacing the fan will not fix the problem.
Your appointment for an evaluation at the genius Bar of an Apple store is free, in warranty or out. There is no obligation to have them do any work for a fee, but if you choose to, charges are generally flat rate for guaranteed repair, no surprises.
If you recently replaced components, such a RAM DIMMs, with parts that do not have Apple-approved temperature sensors, that can also cause such problems.

  • Are there any other ext. soundcards better than SB Live! for recording?

    Hi everyone,
About a year or so ago, I purchased the Soundblaster Live! 24-bit external
    I record from
Guitar --> Amp--> SB Live! --> Adobe Audition
The tones I get are decent I guess, but I have found that my tone gets stripped down from what I am hearing from the amp. The sound out of the amp will sound crisp, but once I record into audition and playback, it sounds very choppy and dry.
My question is, is this the best or are there other ext. soundcards that can get me a better tone?
Also, when I record, I plug into line-in in the soundcard, and in adobe, I select the soundcard and record from there. Are there any configurations I should try to see if I can get a better tone? Thanks everyone for your help.

Alright great thanks, I will look into those.
I am a noobie when it comes to cards sorry.
How does my SB Live! compare to the X-Fi Elite Pro? That seems to be external, yet it also has the PCI card in which you would have to install it into the computer right? How does that work?
And also how does my SB Live! compare to the Audigy 2 ZS?
    Thanks for the help.
I am looking at the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 PCI Surround Recording Card from Musiciansfriend, it was the best rated. and I was wondering can I install that on a Dell Inspiron 9100 Laptop or do I need the card that is specialized for a laptop?Message Edited by oldspice891 on 09-02-2006 02:38 AM
X-Fi Elite Pro is a PCI type soundcard w/ external I/O console so, you can't use it w/ a laptop. M-Audio Revolution cards, 5.1 and 7.1 are PCI type soundcards too (here are USB/FirewWire models listed). The only Creative SB Audigy 2 laptop models are Audigy 2 ZS Notebook (PCMCIA) and Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor (USB) and Audigy 2 NX (USB). You find technical information for those from Creative web. The Notebook model is the only from those that has ASIO support (other supports ASIO through WDM/KS wrappers (like USB-ASIO (~50US$) and Asio4All (freeware) drivers)
W/ laptop you can use only USB, FireWire and CardBus/PCMCIA audio devices.
There are not many CardBus/PCMCIA cards available, and the only low budget PCMCIA card is Audigy 2 ZS Notebook. E-MU has two excellent models 1616 and 1616M but the prices are much higher than Aydigy has. Other available CardBus/PCMCIA cards are ECHO Indigo (two models) and couple (expensive) Digigram models.
As FireWire (IEEE1394) interface, there are models starting from around 100US$ (Behringer), but I would rather recommend devices around 300-450US$ (there are many excellent models w/ and/or w/o mic pre-amps, etc.). FireWire type devices are better from USB devices because of lower CPU consumption and faster throughput. Also w/ 3rd party drivers you can connect/use several FireWire audio devices simultaenously.
An USB device is perhaps the cheapiest way to go. There are plenty of models available so you just need to place your requirements and find the one.

  • Are there any long-term consequences for carrying a balance?

I have some upcoming dental work ($7k) and was planning to pay in interest-free installments to the office. However, I was just approved (hooray) for a Quicksilver card with 0% APR until March. I am considering putting the work on this card, because I would earn 1.5% ($105) and get 10% discount from the dentist for paying in full ($700!). It is not a problem to pay this off before March. I have no immediate credit needs so I can take the score hit for a few months on the higher util. Are there any long-term negatives to carrying a balance? Will Cap1 hold it against me in the future? I know they like to see you charge up the card and pay it off in full, not sure if this plan will bite me. (I would pay well above minimum each month.) Thanks for any advice.

While % util will go up, scoring of % util has no memory, and thus once paid off, it will not have contnued impact. A possible concern of a credtior is when a consumer maintains a high balance for a prolonged period, which can be viewed as an indication that the consumer is over-relying on credit, and thus might be a higher risk.Based on that, it could trigger a decrease in credit limit, thus resutling in little or no decrease in % util even though the account balance is being reduced. I would try to keep it below approx 80% of overall credit limit, and if above that number, get it down within a couple of months.

  • I want to run Lexware on my imac and was told I need bootcamp / parallels for this. Are there any downsides to this?

Hello, I need to run bookkeepting/ bill writing/ store management software on my imac and would like to use Lexware's German product (equivalent of Quickbooks), which can directly link to the German tax autorities. I was told I can do this from my imac via Bootcamp (they dont do a mac version).
Is this advisable and are there any downsides? Is it simple enough? Do I need to be online to use the Lexware software (I live in the deepest countryside with a wobbly connection!).
Thanks a lot for any hints or advice.

There shouldn't be any issues as Boot Camp allows installation of Windows which runs natively just as if you were on a PC. The only downside is that you have to buy a Windows full install disk. Be sure it is the right version for your software.
