Original problem is that I cannot connect to any wifi system anymore - have tried resetting network settings but did not work.

Try 1 step at a time and do a backup, if no joy then do the next step:
1. Switching off your anti-virus and firewall.
2. Computer iTunes menu > Edit > Preferences... > Devices > delete your backup

Try my script FindTracks. Select a few of the missing files to start with then run the script. Choose No at the first prompt so that you can check how it works track by track, then confirm or edit the location of the media folder where your files are. Once you are happy with how it behaves let it process larger numbers of tracks automatically.

It is NOT a bug. You provided a password. If you can't remember it, you can't restore your phone from backup. Very simple.

I'm using iphone 4 but could not backup or update the phone. Am forced to restore the phone to factory settings. All it shows was a itunes and plug. What am i supposed to do?

I was prompted with the 'No Service' message. When i tried to switch it on again, it showed the iTunes icon and plug. When I tried connecting it to iTunes, I was prompt to restore the phone to factory settings. No updates or backup was allowed. What does this means? I have never done any backup for this phone. If you don't know the passcode but have synced with iTunes before while the passcode was set on it, you can back it up then restore it in iTunes on the last computer it was synced with.
If you haven't synced it while the passcode was set on it, or if you don't have access to the last computer it was synced with, you'll have to force it into recovery mode and restore it as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808. Then restore to an existing backup if you have one; if not, you'll have to restore it as a new iPhone and start over.

I have had to reset my laptop to factory settings and reinstall iTunes. I backed up all my songs and apps and have now put all songs back in to iTunes. However, now i cannot drag songs or apps from my iTunes to my iPhone.
It only gives me the 'no entry' style icon when i drag it across rather than the 'plus' icon to add items to the iPhone.
Any ideas how to get round this or will i have to clear the phone and start again?
