What sort of card are you trying to add ? There have been a number of posts recently from people having debit cards declined, so I'm not sure if they are still accepted in the store - they are not listed on this page as being a valid payment method.
If it's a credit card then is it registered to exactly the same name and address (including spacing and format) as you have on your iTunes account, and you are currently in that country ? You don't just click the home and sleep button, you have to hold them down for at least 10 seconds while it is connected to the charger. If it comes awake (and it could take several tries) ignore the red Off slider, wait for the Apple logo and then let go of the buttons.

Does the person who gave it to you still have the receipt ? Did you change the ID, or did you create a new Apple ID? If you had simply changed the ID then what I suggested above should work as the ID itself is the same (even though the name of the ID - the address - has changed).
However if you created a new ID, logged in with that, and purchased items on it, then you have two separate IDs each with purchased associated with them. You say that you can't log in to the original account with the 'alternate' email - have you tried logging in with the original email address? It doesn't matter if it doesn't actually work to receive mail, as far as logging in is concerned it's just a text string.

Since this is the second computer you've had this problem with, I recommend you look for answers on the iPhone forum. My thinking is it is an iPhone issue rather than a computer issue (unless it is some software incompatibility).

It worked just fine last weekend. I have windows 8.1 and a brand new pc, new iPod also, the new Nano. now after the update today, iTunes says iPod has been detected but could not be indentified properly. I can see it in windows. I tried the reset on the iPod also. what else can I do?? HELP

Yes. You can't update or restore any GSM iPhone without a valid sim card installed in the phone. The sim card need not be activated, but it must be valid & present. If you want to update, you need to get a sim card.

It needs to be dried out. Stop using it.. don't turn it on. Put it in a zip lock bag with some rice or one of those packets of dessicant for a day or two. That might do it.
