My ipod nano (5th gen) has a lock icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen.  I have accessed itunes and re-set the ipod but it has not changed. i cannot access the ipod at all. any ideas please?

I have also tried all the recommended 5 steps, but it doesn't respond. when connected to itunes, it will cahrge and update. but no response on its own.

No, you will have to replace the switch or do an out-of-warranty replacement at an Apple Store.
