My MacBook Pro's hard drive is about full, can I move a lot of the data to my 3 TB Time Capsule?
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 17 Inch with 750 GB of space on its hard drive. About a month and half ago I bought a 3 TB Time Capsule and I know that Time Capsule, together with Time Machine, basically takes periodic snapshots of your hard drive and will rearrange/clean/delete files on your hard drive. What I want to know is that since I'm about to run out of space on the internal hard drive can I move a good chunk of the data into the Time Capsule and free up that data on internal hard drive. Videos take up about 75% of my MacBook Pro's hard drive so video's are my biggest problem. If I can't do this with the Time Capsule I guess that's a con of the Time Capsule/Time Machine.

You should be able to do that by partitioning but then how would that data be backed up? If the Time Capsule drive fails, then all of that data is lost. I would suggest you consider an additional external HDD for redundancy unless the video files are of no importance.

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.

I recently had to replace my 2009 Macbook Pro's hard drive. I had the apple store upgrade the OS to Mountain Lion while it was in being repaired. I want to restore all of my old data and files. If I perform a restore from Time Machine, with a date prior to having the hard drive replaced, will it revert back to the old OS?
No, it won't revert to the prior OS X but you you may have third party apps installed that were compatible with Lion that may not be compatible with Mountain Lion.

If what doesn't work?
If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
You can then do any of several things:
1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times. -

The recycle program makes it easier for you to trade in your old Mac and buy a new one. Apple has a partner that will take the old one and give you a gift card for the value -- if your old Mac is in pretty good condition and doen't have problems (passes the diagnostics).

I have a 2007 Mac Book Pro and a Genius told me that it is "vintage" and that the "logic board" is bad and no longer supported. He removed the hard drive and told me to buy a "sled" to retreive the data. Is it worth trying to fix it so that I don't have to buy a new one? Where should I take it? Thanks.

if the Genius is correct and the logic board is bad, then replacing the logic board would be fairly expensive. What problems are you seeing with your MacBook Pro that caused you to visit the Genius in the first place? Whether it’s worth trying to fix it or not depends on your particular circumstances, such as your willingness to trade time for money in pursuing repair vs. replacement. -
Time Machine fails with this error: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Barbara’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."

I received my Macbook Pro a week ago, July 24th as a gift. Since then, I've been having prominent clicking noises and beeps coming from the right side of the laptop. I took the Macbook Pro to an appointment with a Genius at the Apple Store yesterday, July 30th, and he confirmed that the problem was a bad hard drive. He told me that he could just replace the hard drive right then and there, or I could just get a whole new replacement Macbook Pro since it was so recently bought. I chose the replacement and he informed me that an email would come soon in the form of a voucher, in which I would call Apple and also use the Apple Online Store to order the new one.
I still have not received an email about the replacement, or any email in general from Apple. The clicks and beeps are becoming more apparent, and I fear that the Macbook will fail soon, which would be inconvenient as I will be moving to a new residence quite soon. I know sooner or later this will be fixed, but I strongly hoped sooner than later.
Any advice, insights, comments? Thanks for your time.

I failed to mention that the gift Macbook Pro is a refurbished Late 2011 Macbook Pro 15". That's why the only two options was hard drive replacement or full replacement. I took the full replacement option both prevent any accidental and unneeded scuffs that might happen during a possibly rushed procedure and to in general take advantage of any replacement I can get.
Lastly, the largest problem in the end is that the nearest Apple Store (and only Apple Store) in my current state is two-and-a-half hours away from me (Iowa). Luckily I had other business to attend to and the Apple Store was nearby.
Again, thank you for your advice, if it does end up me having to go back there, I will be able to visit next Monday, as it is en route to my moving destination near Seattle. -
MacBook Pro 15" Hard Drive Problem.
Hello ... I have a MacBook Pro 15" which recently died on me. When I turn it on, on the "gray" screen there is a blinking folder in the middle. Snow Leopard never boots up. I thought that my hard drive died, bought a new one for it. Replaced it and when I boot it from leopard to install it on the new drive, when I was asked to select the volume in which I want it the new OS, there was no drive that I could select. Therefore, I am stuck in that step. I used an external enclosure to see if the drive was faulty, but it came up on my iMac. I also placed the old hard drive on an enclosure, and it came up fine on the iMac. So, looks like it is not a hard drive problem, any ideas on what I can try or might be ... ? Thanks!!
Did you use the disk utility on the Snow Leopard installation disk to partition the new disk. If you don't do this the installer does not see the disk.

Macbook Pro replacement hard drive and re-installation of OS X
My son's Macbook Pro (mid 2009) started crashing on boot up and gave a input output error. I have replaced the original 250gb hard drive with a 750gb drive and also upgraded the ram from 2 to 8. Finally I have also replaced the battery. I am using Leopard installation dvd to re-install the software but can only progress as far as the screen 'Install Mac OS X' but there is no disc offered to install it on. By using Disk Utility the only disc shown is the dvd. Pressing the 'New Image' tab I entered 'Save As' 750gb WD HD and 'custom size' as 750 gb. Utility Disk informs me that the disc is only .75mb? Any suggestions to solving my problem and completing the installation program?
Niel, I've checked the connection to the hard drive and all is good but as a check I have disconnected and re-connection the cable to the hard drive and the board. I have also 'listened' to the hard drive and it appears to be spinning. Unfortunately, the Snow Leopard installation disc gets no further with its installation. Are Macbook Pro's of this age prone to cable breaks, or am I using the wrong disc for a full OS X installation, if Snow Leopard is an just as update? Is there anyway to add the drive using Disk Utility and if so how do I do it?

Mid 2009 MacBook Pro 13 Hard Drive Upgrade Questions
I bought an upgraded hard drive for my mid-2009 MBP 13. I've done some reading and it appears that my model of MBP shouldn't have drive issues, but I still have a few questions that I'm hoping someone will answer. Perhaps this will all boil down to a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. That is, I may be worried without good reason. If so, I apologize ahead of time.

The stock drive is a TOSHIBA MK1655GSXF (160 GB):
The new hard drive is the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB 5400 RPM drive.
I noticed that the temperature seemed to spike after installing the new drive. I didn't get the temperature of the hard drive before I took it out, but the CPU was consistently around 170 degrees Fahrenheit and the fan was in the 2,800-2,900 RPM range.
After putting the stock drive back in the MBP, the temps are consistently 142-145 degrees F for the CPU and 95-97 degrees F for the hard drive. The fan is right around 2,000 RPM.
I've read a bit about outrageous load cycles and just wanted to check the numbers.
The WD Scorpio Blue around 4,055 after 27 power on hours.
The stock drive was at last count, at 206701 after 2215 power on hours.
The machine is doing comparable things, downloading podcasts, Time Machine backups, browsing, etc.
The general questions, I have are:
Is the temperature supposed to spike like that when handling a larger drive?
If so, what is a reasonable range? I know I don't have the temperature of the new drive, but if I knew what to expect, I guess I would be more confident putting the new drive back in and not returning it.
What's a normal/healthy/reasonable (don't really know the term I'm grasping for) load cycle to see? I divided the load cycles by the number of power on hours and get around 150 for the WD and 93 for the Toshiba. Are either of those outrageously good or bad? I haven't been able to tell in my reading.
The bottom-line questions are:
Am I just overreacting based on what I've read? Or, is something not kosher and should I return the new drive and get something else? Should I try hdapm or something? If I should return the drive, any recommendations?
I've talked your collective ear off, I'm sure.

RobFor what it's worth I've put aftermarket 7200 rpm hard drives in 2006 and 2008 15" MBP's and also a WD Scorpio Black 320GB in a 2009 13" MBP 2.53GHz and have had no changes in cpu temp or fan speed. Your fan speeds and cpu temp with the new drive sound too high. Something else is going on here. The temp is not supposed to spike when handling a larger drive. Maybe it's something like
Spotlight indexing the new drive? Have a look at your Activity Monitor for an active process drawing resources with the new drive. -
My MacBook Pro (13" mid 2010, Yosemite) doesn't feel like booting up. It gives me the no symbol after the progress bar is about 1/4 of the way through.
Additionally, it won't mount in the Recovery HD. It shows up as disk0s6 and clicking Mount does nothing. Can't seem to mount it in the Terminal either.
The disk partition is encrypted, so unfortunately I can't pull the hard drive out of my MBP and pull the stuff off it with my PC.
I tried First Aid - "no problems found" (such LIES!)
I tried PRAM - didn't work
I tried Verbose Mode - went fine for the first minute, then hung for a while before returning to the "No" screen and in the bottom right corner "Still waiting for root drive".
I tried SMC - didn't work
Most recently I did install rEFInd - which is a boot manager. I was afraid it screwed up the EFI partition -seemingly not, as it will boot to Recovery and external drives.
The data still seems to be there, but the OS is having trouble accessing it.
Do you know what would be causing this? I really need that data back :/It appears I can unlock the partition, using diskutil via the Terminal (diskutil coreStorage unlockVolume <UUID> -passphrase <passphrase>).
However the volume doesn't have a UUID. It lists the partition type as "FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF" (which is a UUID) but using that doesn't work.
Additionally when I use diskutil coreStorage list, it comes up with nothing. I'm at a loss here, the partition doesn't even know it's own UUID or that it's encrypted. It seems quite damaged to me but I don't have the slightest idea why, as I CAN boot to it and enter the password but it will stop at the "no" symbol part of the way along. -
MacBook Pro -- external hard drive corruption -- AND hanging computer?
Since purchasing a 17" MacBook Pro, I've had serious problems with directory corruption on three of my external firewire hard drives (80 and 100 G FireLite Pocket drives and a 400 G Lacie drive). About 2 weeks ago, the 80 G drive (with most of my critical files) disappeared from the desktop. Disk Utilities returned with a message that it was repairable. Tech Tools supposedly fixed it, but the drive icon shortly disappeared from the desktop. This time, Disk Utilities "repaired" it, but it was the kiss of death. After this, plugging in the drive caused the computer to hang indefinitely. I could no longer run any repair or data rescue software. Once this problem occurs, I can switch firewire cables and computers, and the computers still crash/hang. A techy at work managed to rescue the files and replace them on the disk (this required other hardware, a PC, and some software he downloaded(?)). Two weeks later, the problem happened again. However, this time, it was the 80 G and my 400 G backup drive. Now, all of my originals and backups (for the past 2 years, since I did my last CD/DVD backups) are (hopefully) temporarily unavailable. My 100 G drive started to do the same thing. However, I purchased and downloaded a copy of Disk Warrior, which seems to have rescued this disk.
I've had these drive for between 3 and 5 years, with little or absolutely no trouble. Then, after getting the MacBook Pro, I'm encountering really serious problems.
Is the MacBook Pro at fault? (I've returned to my PowerBook G4 until this issue is resolve).
What causes such severe disk directory damage that causes my computer to hang?
How can I recover my files (critically important to my work, some of which is on a tight deadline) without having to run to the vastly overworked/underpaid techy in my place of employment)?

Macbook Pro Reformat Hard drive issues
Hard drive crashed a few months back in my MBP. My optical drive doesn't work and I have Snow Leopard install disks. I went to Best Buy, bought a 1TB Seagate SATA SSD+HDD hybrid drive to replace the 250 GB one I had. I'm trying to get the stupid thing to format buy I'm not having any luck. Here's what I've tried:
1. Was able to boot up through disk utility and tried to install OS Mavericks wirelessly but when I login to my apple account to verify, and click install I get a quick message stating there was a problem and to try again. It never works
2. Bought a external optical drive and tried to install Snow Lepoard but when I turn it on that way it tries to load and then goes to a gray screen tell me that my computer needs to restart. I restart it and it does the same thing.
3. Went to the Mac Store to ask some questions. . .told them I had an iMac and bought a firewire cable. I've tried to install Snow Lepoard via firewire cable but the instructions that I find just plain don't work. I run Lion on my iMac and I can get my computer to recognize my MBP but choosing that and formatting it with the drive on my iMac isn't working either.
I'm about to use the stupid MBP as a frisbee out my back patio. Please help!My Macbook Pro is a mid-2010 model.
